1. what questions do i need to ask?

Date: 06/13/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web

Hello. I have been asked by my boss to help update our ancient website. I know enough html and will have enough helpers that I should be ok, however I have one minor snag...

i've never edited an existing website someone else set up before.

I need to know what information I am going to need from the person who was working on the site a year ago. I assume I shall need a password, and to know the url for the administering page of the site, but is there anything else i will need?

Thank you very much, I hope you can help me find what I need.

  2. Easier web site building?

Date: 06/13/06 (HTML Help)    Keywords: html, web

I am building a web page for a small tile company. However, I am trying to make it as easy for them to update as possible once I am finished. Anyway, in the gallery, each page's name is a letter followed by a number. The letter indicates a specific room/job and the number represents the specific picture. For example, if A1 is a picture of a bathroom, A2 is another picture in the same bathroom while B1 would be a kitchen or different room altogether. I want to make it so my client can copy the html from one page into a new page and switch the picture without having to change the "previous gallery" "previous picture" "next picture" "next gallery" because they will automatically know what should be the next or previous logical link. Is this possible?

  3. File Uploading

    Date: 06/13/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

Does anyone know of a good program or script for uploading files via the web? I need something that will allow users to login and upload images, pdfs, and text files. If they could upload it to a specific category that would be great. It's for internal purposes only which is why I'd like for it to have a login option. I've been searching at hotscripts.com, but have yet to find one I really like.

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

  7. Is Your Web Hosting Provider Robbing You?

Date: 06/15/06 (Java Web)    Keywords: web, hosting, apache

No, I am not joking. I recently found out how my web hosting provider was depriving me (unintentionally I hope) of significant revenue per month by making my site inaccessible to large number of users daily. And the way it was done took me by surprise. Apache server has an interesting directive called MaxClients. MaxClients sets [...]

  8. Help

Date: 06/15/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web, microsoft

I've been trying to download the Korean language pack from the Microsoft website so I can actually read the text on Korean websites rather than see rows and rows of squares. The Microsoft website kept mentioning that the language pack needed Microsoft Office, which I don't have. (I have something called Wordperfect.) So there's a link on the page that said, "If you don't have Office XP, download here." I clicked and it downloaded (I think), then there was a pop-up that said it wasn't going to work with my computer or something...

I swear I'm not a blonge bimbo, I'm just not talented with computers...could somebody help me?

  13. Forms-issues

Date: 06/19/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web

Forms giving me a headache. (i think it's the forms, maybe the problem is somewhere else in the code though....)

There are two registration forms on my website; International & USA Residents.
They are the exact code except for the [Country] select in International, & [State] select in USA registration form.

I've been staring at both codes for about 6 hours and can't seem to find the problem.

http://www.gazettestreet.net/international_reg.html ~ the form is perfect
http://www.gazettestreet.net/usa_reg.html ~ the [state] select is all the way to the right and is off.

I tried to make all the code look the same (including the modifiers for the selects) but it still won't give in.
Can anyone check the sources for both pages and let me know where the glitch is hidding?

    Thanks a million in advanced~

    Thanks~

  14. I think I need help. Sorry~

Date: 06/19/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, mysql, database, sql, web

    Hi
I recently asked your opinions on my site, groovescapeonline.net!
Well, I really don't think this is the place to do it, and i'll just delete the post once I get in trouble for it (if this isn't in fact the place for it)-- But would anybody here be willing to help me in creating some sort of database that users upload information to? I've looked all around the net, looked at all sorts of scripts (some worked, some didn't, and then-- ahhhh).

There's a thing on this website ( http://ddrfreak.com ) -- If you go to "machine locations", users submit locations of machines and they go up in an organized fashion. (I'm not looking for something that complicated or as complicated---) OR-- like a site like www.bemanistyle.com -- how users are able to submit "simfiles" (a zip file, i guess), which posts itself in a searchable database.

I just wanted some tips or maybe somebody's assistance on how I would create something like this. I have a MySQL database thing for my forum (phpbb)-- and I just want to make a database of some sort, that users could either submit files to a searchable extent-- OR just to submit locations (for another site of mine: http://piuzone.com . there's been a promised 'locations database' that I still haven't done because I just can't figure it out.)

Thanks, and I apologize if this is the wrong place for this, and i'll go about deleting the post if that's the case. :)

(P.S: I changed the links to pink to match the banner uptop. Good? :D )

  16. Any fantastic Web Design Companies in NYC?

    Date: 06/19/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

I am looking for a great place for a website I am developing. Currently the people I am considering are just not quite cutting it IMO. I don't want an individual but a company who would hopefully not charge at arm and a leg. I want them to have knowledge in EVERYTHING. Someone that could do something like youtube.com, myspace, livejournal, memberships, animation, etc. You know what I'm sayin' yo!

So please if you know of a great place - fill me in!

    thanks!

  17. building better websites

    Date: 06/19/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

    http://www.project83.com/weblog/?p=9

A great link with good ideas on building better websites. Segment 3, advises sketching. I took this one step further during my last client meeting for a web project. For this client accessibility and usability were paramount (as it should be). I decided to go in with a sharpie and a pad of paper and sketch out my layout ideas and it was very successful. Usually, I just do the sketches for myself and then start mocking up in photoshop, but sketching in front of the client and letting them see the process was a great way for them to see how information will be organized without seeing a "finished" mockup. They were actively involved in the process of how information would be layed out and they could grab a pen if they wanted as well. Plus, it added a layer of trust in me which is always a good thing.

  18. Putting a survey on my site

    Date: 06/19/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

Hi everyone o.o I need your help.

Soon I'll be putting up the first issue of a webzine and I wanted to include a visitor survey on the site (to find out which articles they liked best, what worked/what didn't, what they'd like in the future, etc.).

I was searching around trying to find a web design code that would allow me to do this, but I can't find one. Instead, I keep finding these services that will host surveys for me, but I'd rather not have outsourced surveys if I can help it.

All I need is a basic poll, with boxes that can be checked off and a graph that shows up at the end displaying how many people chose what responses, prefereably fixed in a way that allowed only authorized people to access these graphs. Can anybody point me in the right direction?
