1. Quick question.

    Date: 11/18/06     Keywords: web

I've finally decided to make good on my promise of updating my website and perhaps even moving it to a new location.

So what's a good free web site host/provider with smaller, not so obviously annoying ads for the time being until I'm ready/comfortable with moving onto a domain?

  2. Web Project

Date: 11/16/06     Keywords: php, mysql, sql, java, web, hosting

Hello, everyone. I recently acquired a web project that I am, unfortunately, unable to do. It requires some PHP/MySQL and Javascript knowledge that is a little over my head. I was wondering if anyone here would like to either help me with this project, or take it on completely. The company is based in Dallas.

My website is www.thecablepro.com and we recently had a PHP upgrade by
our hosting company. Unfortunately some of the calculations for pricing
were upset by this and are not functional. There is also a number
showing up on some of the pages directly above the left upper corner of
the "cost per additional foot" box on the cables themselves. It seems
the way money amounts are displayed in the sale section is not correct
either. The amounts are showing up with only one numeral after the
    decimal point.

If anyone is interested, please let me know by commenting. Thank you.

Note: I apologize in advance if this is not allowed.

  3. Job Listing

Date: 11/14/06     Keywords: database, web, shopping

Hello everyone, I have web design job that needs to be filled asap. The description follows below. The website deals with herbal products, reviews, shopping, etc. Please email if you are willing to complete the job, and be sure to include a bid (please note this is not a high budget project). Thank you! cgraydon@gmail.com

Web designer needed to construct website for herbal products. Sections to be included: reviews, informational articles, buyer beware and more. Must also have an e-commerce system for selling.

Dependant upon pricing, a user database may or may not be required at this time. If the budget does not allow for such database, ability to create, use and manage database must be left in design for later insertion.

Website is not expected to contain more than 20 pages.

Project must be ready by end of 2006.

    Date: 11/12/06     Keywords: no keywords

Can anyone tell my why my floating DIV area will not show up on top of the other div's even though it's div z-index is set to 9, 2 higher than all the other div's I have?

To see what I mean go here: spudguns.org

The Floating Menu example that works, from DynamicDrive.com

I'm a bit clueless as to why it's not displaying on top. It looks fine in Opera, and Firefox, just not IE 6.

  10. Form Help

    Date: 11/10/06     Keywords: html, hosting

It seems forms do not like me.

Okay, so I'm trying to get FormMail.cgi to work on http://asklimbit.ledgers.com/form_test.html
Everything shows that the script itself is fine.
But, when I go to send the form, this happens:
close sendmail pipe failed, mailprog=[/usr/sbin/sendmail] at (eval 8) line 108.

I did check what sendmail was on my server. What you see in the form is what it is.
I checked with my host (myhosting.com) and it turns out that they don't completely host sendmail right now and recommend SMTP Auth.

I used the FormMail code from http://nms-cgi.sourceforge.net/
Does anyone have experience with this script? If so, can you tell me if there's a way to impliment SMTP Auth?
If not, then does anyone know of a mail script available that takes advantage of SMTP Auth?

    Thank you very much.

  11. Feasibility

    Date: 11/08/06     Keywords: web

I was hoping to use my final website for my Dreamweaver for my actual portfolio site but now that my instructor has given us the required size and usability I'm not sure.

He is requiring us to design for 800x600 screens with 28.8 modems. Is this reasonable? Should I design two sites, one for class and one for the web? Am I just being whiny and unknowledgeable in this?

  12. Offering Free Work

    Date: 11/07/06     Keywords: web

I've been teaching myself web design for a while now, and would like to get some experience working on someone else's website (instead of coming up with design specs and requirements all by myself). I'm thinking about offering free site designs as a way to get in more practice, and I wanted to know if anyone had any experience doing this, how to go about doing it, and if it's even a good idea in the first place. One of my biggest questions is where to advertise, and how to describe what I'm offering; I'm already working full-time so I won't be able to work as quickly as a professional, but at the same time I'm willing to spend the time necessary to get the job done well. So, any tips?

  13. Freelancing

    Date: 11/02/06     Keywords: html, web

Hi everyone. I just joined the community. I'm still a semi-inexperienced web designer... I started out on Adobe GoLive and have since developed a knowledge of HTML and have started to move from GoLive towards straight coding or at least a mixture of both...

My own website is still rather haphazard, because I began it when I knew absolutely nothing about web design and now that I do, every update is less an update than "OMG let me correct this and make it more sensible."

In any event. A few people have asked me what I would charge to make a website for them. I would love to be getting some income from this, but I have no idea how or what to charge. For those of you who do freelance work, how do you set your pricing? As many details as possible would be helpful--I have no idea what the going rate for anything is.

I hope this post is appropriate to the community. If not, let me know, and I'll remove it. Thanks. : )

  14. Dreamweaver 8 vs GoLive CS2

    Date: 11/02/06     Keywords: software, web

Very part time designer here- I usually stick to projects that are relatively low-tech since I left my last job with lots of great hardware and software.

However, I just recently invested in a new iBook, CS2 and Macromedia Studio 8 (suuure, I'm a student). Before I was working on a 4 year old machine and doing all my images for the handful of web projects I have in Illustrator and hand coding the rest with a little help from source/layout views. Now I have all these great tools and I'm not sure where to start! I've never played with GoLive before and I'm wading through the tutorials now... It's been several years since I've used Dreamweaver and I haven't gotten a chance to look at this version.

I'm curious what you all are using... Is there any reason to even look at GoLive or should I concentrate my efforts on Dreamweaver? Plusses? Minusus? Good resources to find folks engaged in this dialogue?

    Thanks in advance- Brook

    Date: 10/27/06     Keywords: css, web

I just launched a site last week for a new set of web applications that the company I work for has developed. Everything was looking fine, CSS was working fine, things were spaced out. Today I was informed that it now looks all wonky. I haven't touched the code and it doesn't look like our other developer has either. But for some reason now the cellpadding in the table isn't working and the fonts and sizes I've set in the CSS file work in some places but not in others. I can't figure out what's wrong now, when it worked before.

This is one of the offending pages and this is a link to the CSS file.

  17. Requesting suggestions...

Date: 10/27/06     Keywords: php, browser, java, web

Ok, so, it's really late and I'm tired as balls, but before I crashed I thought I'd beg y'all for some advice. I recently revamped (e.g., stayed up too late working on) my parents' business' website (www.stenrudgreenhouse.com) and added a photo gallery with zenphoto which '[info]'asu_ska_kid had recently promoted. I like it a lot (zenphoto that is, I still don't know about the website =p), however because I didn't want to redo all the pages, and I wanted to integrate the photo albums, I basically embedded the photo gallery into an iframe on the photo page. Which seems to work fine, except the page is really long on some, and you have to scroll on others (vertical images). I tried using a javascript from dynamicdrive that automatically adjusts teh height of the iframe to the content contained within in, but when scrolling through the albums (previous and next images) sometimes the iframe would become, like, 30 px tall. I didn't want to try and figure out why, so I took it out and just made the iframe a static height. Not to mention it doesn't work at all on IE for Mac.

So, what I'm asking is, (1) is it ok to keep it the way it is? If not, is there a better solution to automatically adjusting the height of the iframe for someone who knows not a bit of javascript or php? (2) any general suggestions on the site - navigation/info arch or design-wise? I have only tested it so far on a Mac (Safari, Firefox, IE), so glitches on PC browsers would be welcome as well.

    Thanks, again, as always ^^

  19. How to install older version of browser on PC

    Date: 10/25/06     Keywords: web

Sorry, I realize this isn't a web design issue per se, but the reason I need to do this has everything to do with web design, and I figure you guys, if anyone will know. I don't know my way around the technical stuff on a PC very well... I've only been working on one for a half a year-- other than that it was Macs for me.

So I just installed the update for IE7. I wanted to install it separately from 6 so I could still run both for testing purposes, but before I knew what happened, IE7 had overwritten IE6. I even saved a backup of 6, but apparently I didn't get all the files, because it didn't work.

I found and downloaded an install file for IE6, but it won't let me use it now, because it detects that I have a newer version installed.

How do I install both on a PC?

Hello I have a problem. I have form set up using FormMail Clone.. Everything works perfectly no problems.

however when someone sends a message from the form words that have 's or , have the html markup... for example the word WON'T shows up like this in the email WON'T. Is there anything I can do to stop it from doing this?

    thank you.
