1. Urgghh

    Date: 10/24/06     Keywords: cms

    How can I tell if we're being ripped off? We recently renewed our SSL certificate through the third party that also does our CMS and most of the back-end stuff. I don't know much (read: anything) about the certificate stuff, but it seems awfully expensive - $300 to start, and now I think it was $349 to renew. Our new IT guy (who hasn't actually started working here yet, but has been freelancing) told our finance guy, who told me, that it's less hassle for us if they deal with it even if it is a bit expensive. Costs, according to the finance guy, are around $100 to do it ourselves - but what, exactly, does this entail? Or, if anyone knows any good resources for reading up on this I would appreciate it.

    Thanks in advance for any help.

  2. Images Appearing Under DIV

    Date: 10/24/06     Keywords: browser

    Does anyone have any idea why the div with the green bgcolor on the right side is apparently covering the three small images that should be inline with the text? This is occurring only in IE 6 as far as I can tell, as FF and IE 7 look fine as well as Safari and FF on Mac. You should be able to see the three school images I am referring to if you take a look on one of the browsers that render the page correctly.

  4. Weird GoDaddy Problem

    Date: 10/20/06     Keywords: php, java

    I'm having a really weird problem with GoDaddy. I just did the site http://www.drsketchy.com, and the big picture with the quote on it is supposed to be a randomly loading/rotating image. On the staging version I had up on my server (http://www.malloreigh.com/drsketchy) the image rotation script works perfectly. It pulls images out of a directory and randomly displays one on page load.

    However, as soon as I ported the site over to their server (which is hosted on GoDaddy) the script didn't work. I have tried five different script, PHP and JavaScript, to accomplish this, and all have not worked on the GoDaddy server.

    Any ideas why this would be?

    I've been talking to a potential client about a new site.  I told them to send me some links to sites that they like.  They sent some that they liked and this one that they didn't like.  I think their comment was "yuck".

    "Yuck" is way too nice for this site, don't you think?

  6. Cool Flash promos?

    Date: 10/17/06     Keywords: no keywords

    My boss has asked me to develop ideas for flash promotions for our design studio. Something that will showcase what we do or some of our work, but is still entertaining, possibly interactive.

    Anyone know of some good examples of Flash promotions? I'm looking for inspiration. Thanks!

  7. Naming Your Site

    Date: 10/17/06     Keywords: web

    I've spent two days trying to think of a great website name. (and will spend an absurd amount of time continuing to do so if I don't have an intervention of some sort) I want it to be my freelance web design site later down the road. I'm feeling the urge to pick something creative and semi-random. However, I think I might attract more business with a more generic name, or a name that says 'designs' or 'webdesign' in it. Do you guys have any advice for me? I know I don't want something too girlie sounding or too masculine. What about having my name in the address? tashadesigns tashasdesigns (I don't really like that - but would it be a bad idea?) or sotasha.com (i thought was cute, my husband didn't) sorry for the rambling. Main question: Does the name of your website affect the traffic to it that much?

  9. CAPTCHA and FormMail?

    Date: 10/15/06     Keywords: asp, spam

    Hey everyone,

    Have been finding that I am getting a lot of spam via FormMail on sites lately. I've been using FormMail as opposed to JMail (Yes, ASP)

    I want to use CAPTCHA with the contact form so I can get rid of these spambots, but have not used one of these scripts before.

    Form -> FormMail.asp -> Thanks.asp

    Form is the form (duh)
    FormMail.asp processes the form
    Thanks.asp acknowledges the form entry

    SpamBot should be unable to get the form processed if they do not enter the CAPTCHA code on the form.

    Any insight as to where to put things where is appreciated. I've come across a few free CAPTCHA scripts for ASP but they have examples of "This is a valid entry" and "This is not a valid entry", which does nothing for me.

    I think the logic for what I am trying to do is:

    If CAPTCHA="right code"
    Then Process Form
    Else Don't process form

    If anyone can help with this, it would be appreciated. I am sure there's others out there with the same problem.

  10. Advice pls.

    Date: 10/14/06     Keywords: browser, css

    Hi Guys,

    I've been designing my site in Dreamweaver MX and have finally got it to work and look as I want it in explorer, but all the cells and boxes are squashed up in firefox, it looks like a mess.

    I'm not familiar enough with Dreamweaver to know if there is something I should've done with the pages to make them work in more/other browsers than just explorer.

    Could someone have a look at the site and see if they can help me out?

    I've used CSS style sheets.

    Thanks so much!

  11. Can anyone recommend a good Dreamweaver tutorial book please?

    Date: 10/11/06     Keywords: no keywords

    Hey kids,

    I have a Dreamweaver competency test with a creative staffing agency on Friday. I know how to hand code just fine. I use both Dreamweaver and BBEdit to do so. The issue is, because I use limited features in Dreamweaver, I have a feeling I'm going to score pretty low on the test. I recently took their InDesign test and that was really hard. The interviewer/tester said that it's nearly impossible to get a 5/5 on their InDesign test for instance.

    If their Dreamweaver test is any equivalent, I would like to study up on the parts of the program that I don't really use but some others might.

    Anyway, could you all possibly recommend a good book or two for me?

    Thanks so much...

  12. xml loads in Firefox but not IE

    Date: 10/10/06     Keywords: xml, security

    I have a SWF loading an XML file from a remote location, on an HTTPS server. I'm testing the swf from a local machine. In Firefox, the XML data loads and displays just fine in the SWF, but in IE, the data doesnt display at all, and I'm not sure if it's even loading.

    Is there a security setting I need to be aware of? has anyone else run into this?

    Thanks.

  14. GoLive menu rollovers

    Date: 10/09/06     Keywords: html, java

    Before anyone chastises me for using GoLive...I do know html and javascript. I choose to use GoLive to organize and make my life easier (and this is the case 99% of the time).

    The menu I'm working on here: http://www.888windsearch.com/main.html
    has a semi-complicated roll-over system. For some inexplicable reason, the last menu item (Employment) does not show up. The roll-over works, but the image does not appear. It shows up when I preview it on my local machine, and in the GoLive layout. Any advice? Thanks!!!

  15. Frontpage Class

    Date: 10/09/06     Keywords: programming, database, web

    Still trying to figure out if I want to go to Ai online. There are no local college courses around here for me to just go learn how to build a website. I would rather be taught than fish around for information for however many years. Anyhoo - one course around here is for frontpage. $160. A far cry from $15,000. However, I've never heard much about frontpage. A total waste or useful knowledge?

    EDIT New Question:
    AI online Classes:
    * Digital Imaging for Multimedia & Web
    * Information Design
    * Screen Design and Graphics
    * Fundamentals of the World Wide Web
    * Basic Web Scripting
    * Computer Animation for Multimedia & Web
    * Web Site Development
    * Sophomore Digital Portfolio
    * Introduction to Programming
    * Database Systems
    * Web Site Development II
    * Interactive Telecommunications
    cost = $15,000

    continuing education around here offers these online courses:
    Creating Web Pages
    Creating Web Pages 2
    Designing Effective Websites
    Introduction to Dreamweaver MX 2004
    Introduction to Flash MX 2004
    cost = $89 per class. Same weekly amount...

    i just want a jumping off base. Do the cont. edu classes sound better for the price than the ai bit?

  16. Image Gallery

    Date: 10/09/06     Keywords: php, css

    Currently I am using Coppermine's Photo Gallery and have been quite pleased with it. The only thing is I have body parimiters set in my CSS and I don't want to distort my pages with large images so I have them resized from original. http://www.moojoobee.com/gallery/index.php

    I limit my image width to 640px to stay within these boundries.

    I guess I'm looking for a PHP gallery that preserves the actual image size (8 Mega Pixel and Up) so that upon clicking on the resized image it links you to the original image. Hoping this makes sense.

  17. We need someone to take over horror/sci-fi/cult film website...

    Date: 10/09/06     Keywords: web

    Exhausted web administrator would love to meet willing victim and get them to run The Rumour Machine (www.rumourmachine.com), a popular genre film review website catering for the Horror, Fantasy, Sci Fi and Alternative Cult Cinema genres.

    The site has been built up and run by Lee Bailes for over 5 years. His new work commitments mean that he is unable to remain involved with the website and is planning to shut it down unless someone else demonstrates a willingness to take over the workload and wants to run the website. Lee is willing to hand everything over to the person who best demonstrates a love for the genres and a genuine enthusiasm for the momentous task of taking over the site.

    The chosen victim will receive one well used website, the domain name, an established readership and film industry contacts and a very useful marketing tool. If you're interested get in touch with the '[info]'rumour_man!

  18. CSS is messed up in IE for P element

    Date: 10/08/06     Keywords: css

    My site looks fine in FireFox or Safari but in IE on a PC the text is all centered and in IE 5.2.3 for Mac there are long spaces in between each word.  I took the CSS out and it was aligned properly, but I still want to be able to use CSS, so..

    http://apocolis.com

    Don't know if this will show up on here but this is the CSS.  Fine, right?:

    body {
    font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    font-size: 12px;
    color: white
    text-align: left;
    }

    p {
    font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    font-size: 12px;
    color: white

  19. A question for FrontPage users...

    Date: 10/08/06     Keywords: no keywords

    I used the Photo Gallery function in FrontPage for a few of my pages, loaded them to my site, and they worked fine. Then I came back the next day and I get this. Instead of my pictures, I get [photogallery/photo00018373/real.htm]. What went wrong? I can't find anything about it in the troubleshooting section, and I didn't change the code, so I'm at a loss. Any ideas?

  20. Hosting/Upkeep charges

    Date: 10/06/06     Keywords: web

    Hi everybody, I have a situation where someone wants me to host a site and update it as needed after it's complete, and also host and update an existing site, both on their own domains. This isn't a problem for me, server space isn't an issue, but I was wondering what to charge for this sort of thing, since this is a new situation; they don't want to bother with any of these website issues at all, and I usually deal with academia, where they host and update all their own stuff.

    I was thinking that these two sites won't need that much maintenance, once they're both up and running, and they are pretty simple static 'brochure' sites of about 10-15 or so pages. I can't really see myself spending more than an hour on average, per month on these, and no stylistic changes, just content as needed.

    Taking a stab at it.... $50/mo - what do you think?
