web hosts that suck
Date: 09/08/06
Keywords: web, hosting
hello again, and onto the next topic:
i have a client who just got totally dicked over by his webhost, new global net (newglobalnet.com - not that it exists anymore). they completely disappeared from the city, and my client's site went down when they did.
so now apparently he can't transfer his domain to a new host until it expires next march. his domain registration was done through tucows, who sell wholesale webhosting/domain registration to the middlemen hosts. the contact info for the domain is an email address that no longer exists, so no one can approve the domain transfer.
so i'm pretty sure he can edit his domain contact info through tucows here: https://manage.opensrs.net/, but not without the domain username and password. which he does not have.
tucows has been zero help, and the new host can't do anything about it either.
can you think of anything else we could try to get this domain transferred? my client even went to new global net's supposed "office" which turned out to just be a mailbox. no one has the username and password anymore to edit the domain contact info, aside from the now nonexistant new global net.
we're using 1and1.com for the new host (which i'm really liking, btw) if that changes anything.
man if i could figure this out for him i would be an INTERNET GODDESS and maybe get a little more cash out of the project. any ideas?

adding news section to website
Date: 09/08/06
Keywords: java
hello designers.
i am returning to ask another portfolio site question. currently, this is my portfolio site. i am considering adding a news section, because once in a while something cool happens like i get my name in a magazine or i get some illustration published somewhere. it would be nice to have a news section for such updates but i am finding it hard to incorporate into my current layout. i cannot redesign at this time, so i want to see if i can figure this out. i have already set up a blog and figured out how to integrate it and you can view my current version here. this is kinda clunky, but it is the best solution i've come up with so far. (note: the green striped bar would fade out or something, not just abruptly end. also, only 3-5 news items would ever be included. no need to keep old news up.)
any suggestions? does it look really bad? do i even need a news section? it just seems pretty useful in terms of providing a reason for people to come back to my site.
thank you. xposted to graphicdesign.
EDIT: to clarify: i need the news section to be included on the index page. i use javascript to switch the images in and out, so my site is literally only one page. and having a link to a separate page for news really breaks continuity and causes navigational problems, if that makes any sense. and when i make the news section a clickable link that displays the text where the portfolio images go, sometimes the images would not cover all the news text when someone clicks a portfolio image.
additionally, the javascript i use seems to return only plain text for the title field, meaning i can't have it return the appropriate blog code to populate the area.

New here
Date: 09/06/06
Keywords: web
I've been out of webdesign for years so I'm basically starting all over. I have a few questions I hope you guys can help me out with. I've been using Dreamweaver 8.
Is there somewhere I can be directed where I can learn how to add comments to my posts? I'm using blogger right now and I'm not very happy with it.
Also, how can I set it up so I can have multiple users update the site (news, etc) without them going in and messing up my code? Like I said I'm using blogger and some psycho template thing, but I rather not go on using these.
Thanks in advance.

Best way to export .SWF file to not-vomity form of .GIF?
Date: 09/05/06
Keywords: html
Hey all, I have to add an animation to an HTML email for a client. At first the person asked for Flash but I told them using GIFs was essentially required for the medium. I built the animation in Flash using the photos provided but it looks like a$$ when exported. Is there a better way to export them or another third party program that can handle the conversion better? I'm at the point where I'm trying to build the animated gif in Fireworks from the exported Flash frames to possibly have better control over the end result. Any help is definitely appreciated...Thanks.

online surveys?
Date: 08/31/06
Keywords: web
Have any of you been asked to implement online surverys into a website? I'm applying for a job with a not-for-profit and the VP I interviewed with mentioned both SurveyMonkey and Zoomerang as possibilities to get user feedback. From the very (very) basic research I did, SurveyMonkey is cheaper even though Zoomerang has a not-for-profit package that knocks off a couple hundred bucks off their business package subscription. However, I thought I'd ask if anyone here as any opinions on either of these services, or have heard any good or bad press about them. Besides, comparison charts make my eyes bleed. Personally, I can't stand it when surveys pop up on a website, but it's probably worth looking into so I can discuss it with my hopefully-soon-to-be boss =)
Thanks in advance.

copyright of website design
Date: 08/31/06
Keywords: web
I don't know if anyone has any advice on this score, but a few months ago I was approached to design a website for a firm of plumbers. They supplied me with the copy, a rough layout and a list of keywords that they wanted included in the meta-tags. Fairly specific stuff for a change, and I built the site pretty quickly. Then, a few weeks later, I get an email from a very angry web-designer, claiming I have 'ripped off' his design for another plumber's site. When I went and looked at the site, it was basically a carbon-copy of the rough I'd been given, pretty much IDENTICAL body text and even the same keywords in the tags.
I explained to the designer that I had been supplied the copy by a third party, but he was pretty livid (only to be expected). When I went back to the client to ask him to explain, he seemed completely unaware that he had been willfully infringing copyright by copying his rival's site. The end result was I took down his site and told him to re-write all the text and then submit it to the angry designer for his approval.
He has now re-written all his copy (admittedly parts of it are still similar, but, honestly how many terms are there for unblocking drains?) but the designer is still saying he doesn't accept it and that it is still 'too similar' to his design. Looking at the two sites side by side, I really can't see what he means any more and can't help feeling he's just being pedantic now because of the whole plagiarism issue.
My question is this: at what point should I feel as if I can say, look, we've made enough changes and we want to re-launch the site? My client isn't keen to pay for legal advice and I can't seem to find anywhere online where I can ask these questions.

Help?
Date: 08/30/06
Keywords: web, yahoo
Hello, I'm just hoping to get some help here!
I'm in no way a web designer, so please be patient. My buddy and I just wanted to start a silly website, and so I have been trying to put it together.
The only thing that I can't really figure out is how to get the blog on the website. I've gone the tutorial/faq route, and really I have no idea where to begin. If someone can help me get the blog running on the page, I would REALLY appreciate it and could paypal you $20 for your troubles. Obviously I can't afford a web designer, heh. This one small thing is the only thing to stump me!
To put it simple (the only way I know how!), here is what I need help with:
I just got this typepad account:
http://wendywayrad.typepad.com/
I want the blog entries from that account to show up on the front page of my website. I already fixed up the template of the blog, making it how I want it to be on my website:
http://wendywayrad.com/
So, where it reads: "Go away! I ain't done yet... come back in LATE September..." that is where I want my blog entries to show up. I was reading up on domain mapping, but I don't want the blog template to cover up the rest of the stuff I have on the front page of my website, I just want the blog to be placed UNDER the link boxes on my website. I quickly made this in paint, to show where I want the blog entries to be:
Anyone care to help me out? I don't know what I'm doing, but I'm a quick learner! I just need someone to explain things to me in SIMPLE terms, the online tutorials have been a bit confusing/overwhelming for me as I don't even know where to begin. I'm holding up on putting the rest of my site together, until I can get the blog working.
Please comment or email me: morethanchaos@yahoo.com if you can help.
Thanks much!

CSS Wrapper Issue
Date: 08/29/06
Keywords: no keywords
UPDATE: Original issue has been fixed, but now the content div is resting beneath the entire wrapper. Does anyone see why the content div is being forced out of the wrapper?
>>>>
Hi,
Can someone give me a clue as to why the wrapper section of this page isn't displaying a solid white background? My original template was hacked by someone else and now I can't find the bug that is causing the wrapper div to display without a solid white bg so it doesn't break up the nested divs with the dark gray bg.

Thanks a lot.

How easy is it to put Flash in HTML emails?
Date: 08/28/06
Keywords: html
Hey there, I have a client who needs to put Flash in an HTML email. Or rather, his particular client would like this done and he is now asking me what it takes. I thought it was that big of an issue because it can just be like a regular HTML page calling all the elements from a particular directory. Am I mistaken or are there special requirements of which I am not aware? If so, can anyone point to a good tutorial or resource? The alternative of course, is to use gifs. The primary client's previous HTML newsletters have been 54k total including images and links. I just want to ensure which is the best and easiest way to deliver this.
Thanks.

trouble with having my website email me if someone places an order
Date: 08/28/06
Keywords: php, html, web
hi i am trying to update my boss's website for our small business. his brother set it up years ago, and i know enough html that generally i have been able to tweak whatever needs tweaking.
right now we had to change to a new email address, and so we want to make the site email our NEW email address if we get an order placed at the site.
I went into the html and changed the email address info, but it still doesn't email us. would someone be able to help me with this?
if so, i'll post the content of "mailform.php" into a comment on here so you can see if maybe that is it... (something is wrong in there), or i can post whatever else might need posting for your help.
thank you very much!!
(one thing i should mention is that the website USED to (until i started tweaking it today) have people email an info@ email address which is redirected into our old AOL account (which is the one that caused the need to change email accounts.) so maybe that will give you an idea. thanks)

If you guys could teach me anything, give me tips, advice anything you can, I'd really love you for it.
Thanks.

Please help me!
Date: 08/27/06
Keywords: css, web
I posted about my Web site in this community last week and I received a lot of helpful comments. I'm hoping that you can help me out again with answers to some more specific questions.
Let me preface all this by saying that I am not a professional Web designer by any means...everything I know was pretty much self-taught. My site was created almost exclusively in DreamWeaver and I don't have a working knowledge of CSS. I'm trying to tweak my Web site so it displays the same way in Firefox as it does in Internet Explorer. Here are the problems I'm having:
- Tables do not display properly in Firefox. If you look at my homepage in I.E., you'll see that it has a pink double border around the main table of the site...in Firefox, the outer border of the table appears to be white and the inner border is a grayish color. Similarly, I use white tables on my photo pages that display properly in I.E., but they look all funky in Firefox. Instead of displaying a solid white border, the tables have white, gray, and black borders in Firefox.
- I'm also having an issue with the color of borders around photos. If you look at my homepage in I.E., you'll see that all the photos are surrounded by black borders with a thickness of 2. Firefox depicts photo borders with a thickness of 2, but they all show up as white instead of black.
- Finally, I have a hover-link command set up so that when you hover over a link in I.E., the text is green. The hover-link color doesn't show up in Firefox. Also, I have a customized scrollbar that shows up fine in I.E. but doesn't register in Firefox.
Are there any quick fixes that I can implement in my code to fix these problems? I tried using the W3C Markup Validation Service to figure out what the problems are, but most of the stuff is too far over my head and I can't understand it. I'd really appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks in advance!

(I've been lurking though. Excellent community.)
New site launched (well, mostly). This is their first website, so I went easy on them, plus they are that client that takes quite a bit longer than you'd like getting their stuff to you. It's all good though. I had my hands full at the time anyway. They really don't need anything expansive, but I am hoping to get their gallery fleshed out a lot more soon.

PSA: iBook/Powerbook G4 battery recall
Date: 08/25/06
Keywords: no keywords
Battery Exchange Program iBook G4 and PowerBook G4
Apple has determined that certain lithium-ion batteries containing cells manufactured by Sony Corporation of Japan pose a safety risk that may result in overheating under rare circumstances.
The affected batteries were sold worldwide from October 2003 through August 2006 for use with the following notebook computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4.
Apple is voluntarily recalling the affected batteries and has initiated a worldwide exchange program to provide eligible customers with a new replacement battery, free of charge. This program is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and other international safety authorities.
i'd check your batteries!
