name based virtual hosts, suse
Date: 12/04/05
(Apache) Keywords: php, html, web, yahoo, google, apache
I am beginning to work on multiple sites on my home test server and need to set up virtual hosts.
My server is running SuSE 10 with Apache 2, and is accessed by typing in "talon" in firefox's address bar. I copied vhosts.template to site1.conf and edited it as follows:
Next I opened /etc/hosts and edited as follows:
Then, rcrestart apache2.... ok.
And here is where I am stumped.. (and btw I googled the bit about /etc/hosts - i'm not sure if that's how it should be). If I type in http://talon/site1 Apache says page can't be found. If I try http://site1 page can't be found. My site1 files exist in the DocumentRoot listed in the site1.conf file above.
I also read through apache's documentation on virtual hosts but the way they explained it didn't make as much sense to me.
Thanks for any and all help.. I've wanted to learn vhosts for some time now.

frustrating problem(s)
Date: 01/08/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus, antivirus, web, yahoo, microsoft, google
On my older computer (a Dell that runs Windows 98), I keep getting invalid page fault errors. Several occur after Windows has loaded:
YOP (that's Yahoo Online Protection)
rundll32
and something called autodown
It also occurs when I startup Internet Explorer, I get that program error message asking me if I want to send data to Microsoft and then the program crashes. I can't access the Internet even though I'm connected.
All the errors say that the program caused an invalid page fault error at module "unknown"
I've tried running anti-virus (AVG) and Ad-aware... I have that computer networked with this one (running Windows XP) and sharing a DSL connection. After some issues in the beginning, I finally got the network up and running so I've been using this computer to download the antivirus programs so I can run them on the other one since I can't get IE to work there at all.
Another thing that may or may not be related: if I uncheck automatically detect settings under LAN settings in internet options, then IE doesn't crash, but the pages won't load.
I'm also having a small, unrelated issue on this computer (the windows XP one). I can't get the internet options setting for "never dial a connection" to stick. I have DSL, so I'm always connected, but certain sites make the dial a connection box pop up. And when I head back to internet options, the "dial whenever a network connection is not present" option is checked off.
Any help or suggestions are much appreciated! I've tried Dell's support website as well as Microsoft's and Googled 'til I couldn't see straight, but I haven't come up with any solutions for my problem.
EDIT: got the first problem solved - uninstalled Yahoo Online Protection and that did the trick!! Still can't figure out what's causing the never dial a connection setting to change. It's frustrating, but I figure it should go away once I delete my AOL account.

Book Sale
Date: 12/14/05
(College Textbook) Keywords: yahoo
Fall Semester's almost over and I have books I'm willing to sell.Email me at: citrinestone@yahoo.com or respond here if interested in buying these texts or have any questions about shipping, etc.
Chemistry (4th edition) by MCMURRY FAY
I used this hardcover book for only one semester and am willing to sell it for $75.00 (its list price is $153.33). The book is in very good condition (comes from a nonsmoking, pet free home). There were some pencil marks around certain problem questions, but I think I erased all of them. Pages, binding, etc are still intact.
Convergences by ATWAN
I used this softcover text for fall semester. Book is in excellent condition (I never wrote in it, binding/pages intact, pet/smoke free home). I am willing to sell this and throw in “Getting the Picture” for a total of $42.00 (list price for “Convergences” alone is 55.95).
Documents in the Early Christian Thought and Confessions by St. Augustine
Both books are in very good condition. Once again, smoke/pet free, binding and pages are all intact). There were some underlining in pencil on some pages of “Documents”, but I think I was able to erase them all. I am willing to sell both texts for $29.00 (list price for both books is 39.00)

Secure Online storage - read/write access for set user group
Date: 06/22/05
(Software) Keywords: php, mysql, sql, security, web, linux, yahoo
I have a group of users (100 or so) that need read/write access to a document (excel) of sensitive information. Since they are all over the place, they requested a web application to be able to access from anywhere whenever they need to modify or look at this document. I'm trying to figure out what is the best way to provide a secure way to only allow these specific users to access this document.
ideas have included:
Plone - complex, looking for simplicity
phpBB - requires me to set up a mysql linux box somewhere which might be possible
Yahoo groups - not very secure but basically what i want
any other ideas? Security of this information is the biggest priority. i currently have both linux/windows available to host.

I just upgraded to Firefox 1.5 here at work, and I'm still having trouble with sites like mapquest, yahoo and google maps. The maps either don't fully load, or clicking to zoom in/out does not work. I first noticed this after I installed a flash block extension, but it's still troubling me, even though I have removed it. Does anybody have any ideas what the problem may be?
I'm using it on a Win2K machine.

free calendar app that doesn't suck?
Date: 01/13/06
(Web Development) Keywords: html, sql, java, web, yahoo, google
i'd like to add a calendar to my site. it doesn't need to be editable by visitors to the page, only by me.. but it does need to have functionality that would allow visitors to flip through different months and see what days i'm available. ideally it could also be colorcoded based on different categories (completely available, someone has requested me but nothing is confirmed, not at all available.)
i have come to ask the experts if you know a useful app for this purpose. i'm definitely not a true webdev person... i only know basic html and a little sql/javascript/etc. i googled, but most of the results were for calendars which remain on the site of the calendar's creator (e.g. calendar.yahoo.com) vs. ones which could integrate into my own site's design.
(to give you an idea of my preferences, some of my favorite web-based tools are flickr, allconsuming.net (and 43 things), dodgeball, yelp, etc.)
any advice would be greatly appreciated =]

This, is a frightening thing, even though it's been going on for a long, long time now. Because if the public is aware that the government wants to try and strong-arm even "random" "unidentifiable" information, then they'll be that much more paranoid about searching for information -- after all, what someone may think is innocuous, this administration might well be paranoid, themselves, about. And the more frightened people are about looking up what they need or want to know, the more they'll end up coming to rely on what the readily acessible media feeds them. Deliberate or not -- and honestly, I don't have enough faith in the current government to suspect ZOMG A CONSPIRACY! -- this has the real potential to not end well at all.

Help needed with Internet registration pages
Date: 01/29/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus, web, yahoo
Hello, everyone. I've come to this communtity a few times before, and it's usually been helpful, so here I am.
My family owns a Dell Dimension 8400 PC w/ Windows XP. Although my family has had a bad history with virus trouble, the Internet has been working pretty well since we got it. Recently, however, there has been a bit of an issue when it comes to singing up for things via Internet. An example: I try to sign into my email account at Yahoo, and it comes up with a "The page cannot be displayed" screen. My sister tried to download a job application: same screen. My mom tried to order a bunch of stuff from a website: same screen. I tried to register for the ACT: same screen. Anytime anyone tries to register or sign up for something; when you click the actual button, that screen comes up.
This is a huge problem, considering the amount of items my family orders online. Since I'm also going to be applying for colleges soon, I need a reliable Internet that I'm sure will get my information through. It's very nerveracking. I don't know what to do. So if anyone has any idea what this is all about and how to fix it, I would be very thankful.

format hard drive and reinstall windows?
Date: 02/04/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: yahoo
I posted this the middle of january, asking how to format my hard drive. But the only two people to help me couldn't/wouldn't/didn't have time to, give me the help I need on the level I can understand.
So, I ask again, but with slightly more knowledge this time.
My Dell Dimension that has had one hardware upgrade (new mother board and more memory?) is running Windows ME.
It got wormed this summer with what trendmicro calls Pe_Tenga.A.
I've finally figured out how to get all my files off, and have actually done it.
I want to format the hard drive and start fresh.
I have a Windows XP disk (full install I believe) to install, and I can get all the patches through work.
I tried booting straight from the CDROM with the new windows disk, but it wouldn't do it.
Question:
How do I format the hard drive? (I used to know, but its been a long time)
Can I just install Windows XP from there, or do I have to install something else first?
I'll be online (on my laptop) for a few more hours. If you'd care to help me, I'd really appreciate it.
