1. Yahoo UI Library (JavaScript + AJAX) is Worth Looking

Date: 02/17/06 (Java Web)    Keywords: java, web, yahoo

Yahoo released an UI library for web applications, developed using Javascript and AJAX. It provides some nifty components like dual-calendar, tree, drag-and-drop, slidedrs etc. Very much worth adding to your toolkit. Personally I found the performance somewhat sluggish. DOJO is another alternative (better?). Link

  5. ...seriously hating Y!SB more every day (AWSTATS problem)

Date: 03/03/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, web, yahoo

yesterday, after the Y!SB version of Movable Type refused to properly work with a non-their-version of bigPAPI (which i needed for a stat-tracking plugin to work) i was advised to install bbclone instead.

this, too, doesn't work because yahoo doesn't let people upload .htaccess .htlock .anythingwithadotinfrontofit files.

doing some more research, i found awstats, which doesn't require hidden files, uses the log files generated by Y!SB already (so that's what they were there for, i says), and doesn't require me to tear my hair out.

being oblivious to perl and consoles and so on also made me have to find this thread (http://coderforums.com/showthread.php?t=17248) which explains how to configure everything without knowing how to code.

so uploaded all the stuff, ran the program, everything worked great.

and by that i mean everything worked great on day one (sorta like the movable type plugin).

now, when i try to update awstats and get the information for today, i get this message:

Error: Couldn't open server log file "/logs/access.log" : Permission denied

Setup ('/cgi-bin/awstats.www.websitewithheld.com.conf' file, web server or permissions) may be wrong.
Check config file, permissions and AWStats documentation (in 'docs' directory).

and i'm confused as hell because i didn't change anything! same stuff as yesterday! at most, the log file may have started anew (I think it saves the old log file and then generates a new one per day), but still what's the deal here?

i really really hate Y!SB more and more every day and i'm not web-savvy enough to know what the hell it keeps doing to screw me over.

edit: added an LJ-cut to hide semi-obnoxious angst. the problem that i think i'm experiencing is that access.log doesn't allow itself to be read by "others" (it's chmod 660 instead of 664), and Y!SB (being sucky) doesn't allow me to change it to 664. i can download the log file and reupload it somewhere to view the file, but it's still amazingly obnoxious to have to do so.

  7. FTP hosting

Date: 03/17/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web, hosting, yahoo

Hope this is within the realms of this community.

I do a ton of web design work with my brother's company. This involves me either driving there to pick up the files on CD, which is kind of a pain in the fanny sometimes. I don't mind getting out of the house, but it does add wear and tear to my vehicle when I am only there for a few minutes.

He has other uses for FTP hosting as well for printers, clients and the like.

I would go in with him on the hosting costs so it would have to be pretty inexpensive, reliable and easy enough for him to understand.

Anyone have any hosts you prefer? We don't need any web hosting, this would be strictly file storage.

I would go ahead and host that here on another machine but then I would require to purchase IP addresses and with set-up fees that seems silly since I will be moving from my currently location in June. Not very cost effective at the moment.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: In doing some Googling (actually found it through Yahoo though) I was wondering if anyone has used http://www.streamload.com They do have a free based file hosting account and I will try that but it's always nice to be able to have opinions on long or longer-than short term use, if you will.

    hey all
quick question - who do you use for web hosting? i'm looking for recommendations for small business/personal site hosting, like for bands and other small clients who don't require a ton of bandwidth or even much storage. i've used fatcow, but didn't have to maintain the site so i don't know how great they turned out to be. i currently host my own site with yahoo small business, which is like 11.95 a month for 5 gigs of storage and 200 gigs of bandwidth. they support scripting languages and have integrated wordpress and movable type which is pretty sweet, but i'm wondering if i can do better.
    thanks!

  14. Sending mail

Date: 04/06/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: web, yahoo

    Hello,
I have written an application that sends an email verification request to a person signing up for a mailing list. When testing the applicatation I have the following problem:

The email comes to my personal account very quickly probably because my mail and the server are in the same domain. The problem comes with Yahoo and Hotmail. The people helping me test this say they are not getting the notification at all. I have tested it on one of my webmail type accounts and I got it. The first time took 30 seconds, the second time I got nothing.

Any suggestions would be helpful. I do not have access to PEAR.

    Thanks.

  17. Yahoo Messenger/Mac OSX problems

Date: 04/18/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software, java, web, yahoo, google

I am on a Mac G4 running OS X 10.3.9, and I'm having troubles with my Yahoo Messenger. I connect to the internet through my work's T1. Yahoo Messenger usually quits after I send a single line of text, if it lets me sign on at all. I've been in contact with Yahoo Customer Care, but I really don't think they actually read the emails I send since their responses don't address my problem. I contacted my company's help desk, wondering if it was a proxy issue (since that had been a problem in the recent past with other software) and he told me that it's been happening to a lot of Mac users and they haven't been able to find a way to work around it. I was hoping someone here has any idea how I can fix this! I use YIM to contact the freelance writers that I work with, so it's not really something I can do without.

    Here's what I've tried:
    *Uninstalling and reinstalling YIM
*Connecting through Yahoo's java client/web messenger
    *Installing Adium
*Clearing the Yahoo plist files off my computer, uninstalling YIM and reinstalling
*Scouring the Yahoo and Mac help sites/knowledge bases as well as several pages of Google search results

All I can figure out is that I'm not the only this happens to and that it's only my version of OS X and newer.

Has anyone here been able to fix this, or do you have any ideas of something else I can try?

    Thank you!
