1. CNET Ranks Firefox in Top Ten Products

    Date: 09/16/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, html, web, google

    Its nice to know that CNET, a highly-recognized-computer web site, has ranked Firefox among its top ten products for the last ten years. The list was produced as part of CNET's tenth anniversary celebrations. Earlier this year, Firefox made CNET's list of the top ten downloads of the past decade. Products were selected based on the most wide-ranging acceptance.

    On Firefox, CNET says: "Sure, Mozilla has been around for many years, but Firefox 1.0 brought the open-source browser into the mainstream. Some never thought Mozilla could make it as anything more than a geek badge of pride. The light, secure, and efficient Firefox is legitimately challenging Internet Explorer's stranglehold on Web browsing."

  7. Opera Wants To Take a Bite Out of Firefox

    Date: 09/22/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, web

    Opera has now changed the rationale behind its future revenue generating sources. Instead of depending on revenue derived by the sale of its web browser, Opera will now be dependant on revenue derived from sources other than its browser sales. Opera is now betting on increasing its revenue from search and service partners.

    Starting today, Opera's 8.5 version will be free and without any ad banner or licensing fee. The idea behind this new marketing buzz according to Jon von Tetzchner, the CEO and founder of Opera, is to become the second most used browser, bumping Firefox from that position. Tetzchner wants to lead the pack, but since, IE comes embedded in Windows, Opera is targeting instead at Firefox to increase its sagging web browser market share.

    Free Opera....Soon To Be Number Two expands on Opera's new marketing strategy to weaken Firefox's mainstream preference.

    Will the Fox surrender market share, or will it fight back?

    Cheers,

    Omar.-

    Date: 09/24/05 (Java Web)    Keywords: browser

    Opera was once a popular browser and still is within a selected group of people. It came with better features than Internet Explorer and preceded Firefox. It was always available for free but it came with annoying integrated ad banners which may have ultimately contributed to its decreased market-share. There was also a paid-for ad-free [...]

  9. xposted- sorry its driving me crazy

    Date: 09/26/05 (HTML Help)    Keywords: browser

    i have been a paid member for about two years and i still dont understand this style stuff. i was wondering if anyone could help me. i found a style that was still on my styles. i was playing with it trying to fix it and i totally ruined it. now i keep getting error upon error. i have this picture that seems to be of sara jessica parker. it was for the old style. i cant seem to get it off my layout. parts of it are black and parts of it are white. which that isnt at all what i am looking for.

    this is kind of this gist of what i am looking for a space where you dont have to scroll down to have anything fit on your screen... one sidebar where i fill stuff out and also my info is in. and an entry box where of course my entries are. the entries are transparent and the main background is this picture and on the side is this picture... can anyone look at the style browser coding and tell me what i am doing wrong?

  10. How do you get out of full-screen view?

    Date: 09/27/05 (Opera Browser)    Keywords: browser

    When you can't access the necessary pull down menu to go back to the normal view. And there's no keystroke shortcut. I did find how to get the scroll bars back (va the only function key that worked), but I couldn't get tabs, instead just hop between the tabs I had open. Eventually I just closed all tabs/windows (by mistake) and the new one opened up ok. I would have quit but I was downloading something and fortunately that kept downloading, even with all windows closed.

    All that aside, with no keystroke and no pull down menu, how did you get out of full screen view?

    Oh and I have a mac. Which might just mean the mac version is beta as it is with other browsers that shall not be named, and this is the burden I have to bare.

    *dusts self off, checks bruises and decides that despite misadventures, opera is worth it*

    Thanks for reading and any replies.

  12. Livejournal and Firefox Compatibility

    Date: 09/30/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: blogging, browser, web

    Question:

    In regards to the announcement that Blogger/Blogspot, one of the Big 3 Blogging services (alongside both Xanga and our own Livejournal), was created by its developers using Mozilla Firefox, and that Firefox is recommended by the same for viewing the content on all pages within the Blogger domain, I have wondered about Livejournal's place in all this.

    Frankly, while Livejournal hasn't given me much of any problems as a Firefox user, I'm worried about how Livejournal was built, and if the content on here is all totally compatible with this increasingly-present web browser.

    I mean, yes, the code for Livejournal is filed under one of those GNU-GPLs we keep hearing about. However, even if that's the case, the slightest notion of Livejournal's hypothetical Firefox incompatibility will have alot of us LJers wondering about our future here.

    Hopefully, such isn't the case. Hopefully, its not a matter of one browser getting better treatment over, or at the expense of, another browser.

  13. search.ini hacks

    Date: 10/01/05 (Opera Browser)    Keywords: browser, web, google

    Hey all. I've got a few people in the office using Opera 8 now that it is ad-free, and to further sell the browser (though everyone is understandably impressed) I've made sure to have some cool search.ini tweaks available for them.

    Latest one I came up with is for Google Maps. "map" is the key, so to get directions you'd enter (if you knew the addresses, of course):
    map 151 Andover Street 01960 to 90 Pleasant Valley St 01844
    (From one Borders bookstore to another, heh.)

    [Search Engine ??]
    Name=GoogleMaps
    URL=http://maps.google.com/maps?q=%s

    Key=map

    Has endseparator=0
    Encoding=utf-8
    Search Type=8
    Verbtext=17063
    Position=-1
    Nameid=0

    I also made sure dictionary.com, merriam-webster.com, and wikipedia were available as those are popular places for myself and I think others would find them useful.

    I also have some LJ-specific searches. Use LJ * for a livejournal page (such as: lj login.bml or lj poll/create.bml), lju for a user's page (such as: lju erislover), and ljf for a friends page (such as: ljf erislover).

    Key=lj
    Is post=0
    Has endseparator=0

    Anyone have any others to share?

  14. Help with profile formatting

    Date: 10/02/05 (HTML Help)    Keywords: browser

    Hello all!

    I'm currently reformatting my User Info section. I decided to use the "span" fucntion instead of the "font" function, with the aid of '[info]'howto. The problem is, it's not really working. I want to do simple things, such as using color and increasing the font size. I'm not sure why it's not working. Here's a sample of the code that I'm using (minus the "*" inside the <>):

    < * span style="font-size:22pt;"><* i>"...~*about me*~..."<* /span>
    <* span style="font-size:10pt; color:#000000;">"los angeles."<* /span><* span style="font-size:14pt; color:#990000;">PROUD USC TROJAN.<* /span><* span style="font-size:10pt; color:#000000;"><* b>" CINEMA-TELEVISION MAJOR."<* /b> music recording minor.<* /span>

    According to my code, "...~*about me*~..." should be size 22 font and in italics. It only shows up in italics.

    I also have some questions about alignment.

    1) I want to center some user info, but I don't want to use the "<* center>" function because it's not compatible with all browsers. Does the <* p align = "justify"> function work for all browsers?
    2) How do you make a paragraph have a straight border on either side? I thought that was the <* p align="justify"> function, but it's not.

    I'd really appreciate it if anyone has any answers or ideas.

    Thank you very much,
    -- Miriam

    EDIT: It showed up on this entry when I didn't put the "*" in the code, so why isn't it showing up on my user info page? I'm using Safari as my browser.

  16. More problems with form action=

    Date: 10/04/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, browser

    Okay here's what I have:

    index page with 2 form fields (name,email)
    form declaration on this page is set to have action="mailing_lists.php"

    Why, then, does it take the form data once and return to the same page (index) after clicking submit once, but after filling out the fields again and clicking submit for the second time the browser goes to the specified mailing_lists.php? I want it to go there straight off, and take the $_POST['name'] and $_POST['email'] with it.

    Also: I'm trying to take the values of $_POST['name'] and $_POST['email'] and set them as the default value for two fields of the same type on the mailing_lists.php page, but value="$_POST does not work and it doesnt work if i enclose it in php tags either. (cant type them here or they parse)

    Any suggestions?

  17. More Support for Mozilla Firefox at eBay

    Date: 10/04/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, web, microsoft, ebay

    Many e-Bay sellers are expressing their frustration at e-Bay's lopsided web design in favor of MS Internet Explorer. According to yesterday's mozillaZine post; AuctionBytes.com , an on-line news site, is reporting that some eBay sellers have started a petition to persuade the auction heavyweight to support Mozilla Firefox and other alternative browsers. According to the article, some features on the eBay Sell Your Item page are optimised for Microsoft Internet Explorer and do not work correctly in Firefox and other browsers. Furthermore, there is no Firefox version of eBay Toolbar, which is currently only available for Internet Explorer on Windows.

    The petition, entitled eBay to provide alternative browser support, was created by Jared McAteer and has 1,189 signatures at the time of writing. Signers are required to provide a name and email address.

    "It should be noted that sellers can use Firefox to auction items on eBay but the experience is not as smooth and refined as it is with Internet Explorer. Not all of the site is Mozilla-hostile: in May, eBay improved its Picture Manager tool to add support for Firefox. In addition, eBay is one of the default search engines in the Firefox Search Bar, which we presume raises revenue for the Mozilla Foundation."

    If you feel e-Bay has a faulty business policy, kindly click here to sign a petition requesting e-Bay to provide further support to other web browsers besides IE.

  18. Java help

    Date: 10/07/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, html, java, shopping

    I've been having trouble with Java. For example, if I'm doing online shopping, they often have the option of viewing a larger image of the item, which comes up in a popup window or something. A lot of the time, no window or image appears at all. Most recently, I clicked on a button with the following link: javascript:centerIt(345,164,'popvideo.html?artist=beautiful','drvideo'); and again, it didn't work. :\ I'm pretty sure the problem is on my end because the sites work on other people's computers. I also tried turning off the popup blocker (whether or not that's even related to this problem), but still nothing. What's going on??

    I'm using Windows XP home edition and my browser is Firefox 1.0.7. (Though it doesn't work with my IE either.)
