1. Flash Encoded Video Needs Proofing!

Date: 11/30/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web

    Greetings all!

I posted a few days ago re: Flash encoding video for the web...I think I found a good mix of quality with load time. Would you please proof?

I'm seeing if it plays back on most systems with the following qualities:

    I'm looking for:

    A) Quality. How does it look? How does it sound?
    B) Stuttering? Does it start to drop frames / have choppy playback? (Audio should be fine, video may skip)
    C) What Platform are you on (Mac/PC), what browser, if you have dialup or broadband, and a rough estimate of your processor and RAM...all of these factors determine how anything Flash-based plays back.

    http://lucidsound.com/flash/

It's a 1.5-2 minute video trailer of a doc for Spike TV that I did the sound for several months back. Yes, it begins with black...audio starts before video, and the file DOES autostart...no need to hit play.

WARNING: It contains graphic images of the 9/11 tragedy.

Many thanks for your time all!

  2. Viruses & adsl.

Date: 12/02/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, virus, web, spyware, google

    http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=426607

This sounds almost exactly like my problem:

    The symptoms are:

    - No web pages get displayed for any of the websites
    - If we reboot the pc/xp then internet web page access
works fine for the first few minutes. After that
it will not work. Tried both IEand Mozilla. But every
thing in the setting seems to be fine. Checked the
Tools Options, etc/host etc.All the connection settings
are proper with DHCP enabled, Automatic IP address, DNS
    address etc.

    though:

    - ping works fine
    - nslookup also works fine.
it shows the correct ip address to hostname mapping

I tried MS Antispyware beta1 and AVG Free both found some viruses
and of course rebooted the machine. But no use. I still ended up
    with the same problem.

Finally I started removing winsocks entries in the registry. After that
I could even use ipconfig and nslookup.

I tried system restore from the control panel. Wow. It worked.
I restored the system to the day where I had no problem to access internet.
After restore, the pc boots on its own and then finally, the problem is gone.
Since I restored the system to a backdate, all the visuses are also
got restored. Again used Antispyware beta1 to scan the pc to remove
    all the
affected Drives. Also, used AVG Free to remove remaining viruses.

    The solution:
    Use system restore.

There,in case anyone can help me with this(pretty, pretty please!?)In my case System restore doesn't work,Windows re-installation(few times),didn't work either. Also, after I reboot,I still can't open pages in any browser,it just allows me to connect. Without rebooting my pc I can't connect at all. And sometimes even that doesn't help. My dial up works fine,as you can see.

I'm not a computer expert,I know only basics,so please bear with me. Tnx.

    x-posted everywhere,because I'm desperate like that.

  3. multiple versions of the same site via CSS

Date: 12/02/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, web

Hello all. I'm an active member of '[info]'graphicdesign, and have recently added '[info]'webdesign as i'm becoming more involved with web development for a couple client projects.

I'm in the process of a CSS-level overhaul of my site, biesdesign.com. I do not plan to edit the content pages at all, only the CSS that controls layout. The site is currently laid out entirely in an external css file, so that shouldn't be a problem.

My issue is that my redesign will look best on monitors with screen heights in excess 900px, so I need to create an alternate css file for smaller monitors (to allow the client to revert to my site's current design or a slightly modified version thereof) and need to create a method where the client's browser remembers which CSS layout they're using when moving from page to page so that they have a consistent experience once they've chosen. I realise at this point that I'll likely have to insert several lines of code into each page, but that isn't a problem. I just don't want to have to maintain two websites to accomodate for monitor sizes. When I add a page, I need for it to be immediately a part of both experiences, if that makes sense.

    Any ideas?

  4. HTML-only refreshing

Date: 12/03/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: browser, html, hosting

OK, this has been doing my head in and despite trawling the code for some sites that do it (eg. RackSpace) I cannot figure out how to get a page to refresh/reload without having the browser reload all the images too.

In other words, how do I reload a page and force the browser to use the images in its cache?

The reason I want to do it is so that I can gently rotate the front images on my own site (Memset dedicated hosting as they do already if you refresh the page but without all the other images reloading and making it look untidy to the user. (yes I could do it with DHTML but that's a mild PITA).

Any tips appreciated - this surely should be simple!

Date: 12/19/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser

You know the bar at the bottom of a browser that displays URLs when you mouse over, and in Firefox it's where the forecast/music control addons sit? For some reason, it's disappeared on my Firefox. I tried updating it and removing the addons and restoring toolbar defaults, but as I'm not sure when it poofed, I don't know what could have triggered it. It's more of an annoyance than a problem, but does anyone have any ideas for getting it back?

  9. Object not valid error

Date: 12/20/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: browser, java

    Hey guys,

I'm trying to build a page with two forms. The first form is located in an invisible layer, and it comes to view only when the user clicks the submit button of the second form. The button in the first form, which is not a submit button, uses a javascript like document.getElementById("commentform").submit(); to submit the second form.

However this is where something happens and I don't know what. The browser throws an error like "Object doesn't support this property or method." And it gives as culprit the script I typed above. The only method or function that I can see here is submit(), but that is not an exotic function, and the browsers I tried it in are all latest model. How is it possible that the object doesn't support this method???

  12. I need so much web help I don't know where to begin

Date: 12/22/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web

First of all, I want to say sorry for posting this in multiple places but I need all the help I can get.

I am a novice webmaster. I learned most of what I know by clicking view source, seeing where people had text, adding my own and slightly modifying those pages. Therefore, saying that I don't know what I'm doing is an understatement. I usually find programs to do the things I need to get done like menus (deluexe menues), web dwarf and my latests installment, Dreamweaver 8 which I have no freaking clue how to use to it's full potential.

My club's webpage needs serious work. One issue is the menu. Since it's from a program, it says trial menu on top of it, disabling people from clicking the links. Two is the overall layout. It's boring, it's plain. I want to stick to the color scheme of red, black and white. I'm having alignment problems, browser problems (looks one way in IE vs Firefox) and a whole medley of other problems. My club has a forum which I've been posting screen caps of the mistakes in the website and pleading for help. Turns out, I'm practically the only one who knows how to do anything web wise which meant I'm on my own. I had one guy reply but due to my lack of knowledge, he was way over my head.

Here is the forum post. Feel free to read it, look at the screen caps and comments. I've set the board so that anyone may leave comments. I would be grateful for some help. I've been frustrated over this issue way too long. Thank You

  13. Firefox has disabled data execution despite it being enabled in windows?

Date: 12/22/06 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, web

I was playing around with Process Explorer, and apparently it allows you to view the Data Execution Prevention status of running processes. Pretty useless, I thought, since I have Data Execution Prevention turned on for all processes. I have no exclusions specified, and have selected "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select"...

However, despite this, Firefox shows up with DEP status "Off"... It is the only process on my system that does this. I have an Opteron 170 processor (identical to an Athlon64 X2) which supports hardware DEP mode. If an application can simply opt out of data execution prevention despite its being hardware supported and supposedly forced by the OS, it really weakens the protection Especially when the application is a web browser, which is probably the most vulnerable application on the entire system to buffer overflow attacks (which is what DEP is designed to prevent).

I checked out of curiousity, and ThunderBird also comes up with DEP disabled. I have not found any other applications that disable this protection feature.

So, I'm kinda miffed that the supposed "secure" browser has opted out of Data Execution Prevention. Any particular reason/explanation for this?

I have included a screenshot that will show that it is indeed disabled, and I do indeed have DEP enabled on my system.

  16. Windows file management with PHP?

Date: 12/24/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, browser, database, web

I was curious where to look for info on how to access files and directories (and any constructs/modules/functions) that may help with file management in a Windows environment? Or any changes that need to be made to php.ini or any other file. Basically I want to be able to access and control files and folders from within a webbrowser or a command line with this script and be able to have it store filenames, data structures, etc. to my database. Also wouldn't mind some data mining functions as well, as windows search doesn't work too well and I'm still trying to find a good grep for windows.

  17. Correct way to design?

Date: 12/29/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, web

Hello, I'm new to this community and I've had this question bugging me for an eternity (well okay, maybe not that long). What is the "correct" way to Web Design.

This question came to me because I've had a domain for about Four years now, and I haven't been able to do much with it to tell you the truth. It's just a place for me to keep practicing web design. Well. I've gotten many complaints from visitors from how I designed my web site. Personally, I don't give fucking damn about what someone thinks, it's just kind of frustrating when so many people tell me different things.

So my question to you is, what is the correct way to design? Is there a correct way? Or is it just however feels right to the designer? I don't think there's a goddamn correct way, I just think there's just many different ways and that it's up to the web designer to choose the "best" way.

What's your opinion? Or can you give an answer to my question?

    Edit
    Thank you for your comments!

Now: I guess I should've mentioned what I use. When designing a website, I usually use "tables" but I've heard CSS Div layers were better. But some browsers do not support CSS so what am I to use?

  20. Javascript Widget

Date: 01/08/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: browser, web

    Hey guys,

I've had a shit ton of problems creating a widget that will stay on top of everything in the browser window, and also...be compatible with IE6, 7 and FF in both PC and Mac. The problem is often Flash but other times there is just an overflow bug because to get around IE6's stupid non-support for position:fixed I coded in overflow:auto to the body element. It's complicated. It's still not working for all platforms.

Anyway, so I was just browsing to see there is a widget like this already and saw the incredible widget on Adobe's website:

    http://www.adobe.com/products/

That looks great, but the code is pretty convoluted. And, plus, they have a copyright and patent warning attached in their script. I think they may have minified it too. So, I'm like, screw this. There has to be someone who knows an open source version of the same widget. anyone?
