Javascript Widget
Date: 01/08/07
(Javascript Community) Keywords: browser, web
Hey guys,
I've had a shit ton of problems creating a widget that will stay on top of everything in the browser window, and also...be compatible with IE6, 7 and FF in both PC and Mac. The problem is often Flash but other times there is just an overflow bug because to get around IE6's stupid non-support for position:fixed I coded in overflow:auto to the body element. It's complicated. It's still not working for all platforms.
Anyway, so I was just browsing to see there is a widget like this already and saw the incredible widget on Adobe's website:
http://www.adobe.com/products/
That looks great, but the code is pretty convoluted. And, plus, they have a copyright and patent warning attached in their script. I think they may have minified it too. So, I'm like, screw this. There has to be someone who knows an open source version of the same widget. anyone?

Method name must be a string.
Date: 01/14/07
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, browser, web
I have a weird thing happening in one of my scripts. A statements that looks like this:
$this->updateFooBar('BarFoo', null, null, NOTIF_TYPE_CHANGE);
Gives the following result in the browser:
Fatal error: Method name must be a string in /usr/local/web/a/b/c/d/MyFile.class.php on line 141
My first guess was that I've accidentally define()d updateFooBar, but I haven't. It's a class method inherited from the parent class. Any ideas?

Hi all,
I've been looking around for Mac browsers emulators and I came across this site: Browsercam.
Has anybody here used these people, are they any good? Can anyone recommend any emulating type service, preferably online but decent software could be good too?
Thanks!

iframes

Okay, well this is the raw website: http://www.shuushuubuttons.com/index2.html
I have three iframes there...but when you bring the browser window in and out (using your mouse) the top frame gets eaten up by the bottom ones. Is there any way to 'lock' the top and left frame so it doesn't change size. I put in the 'noresize' tag, but that didn't seem to make any difference. Any help would be appreciated! Take a look at my html, maybe I've done the tags wrong.
Thanks!

Word --> HTML
Date: 01/19/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: browser, css, html, technology
I am trying to make an HTML template out of a Word document (which will then be used to dynamically generate more HTML documents). The client expects the HTML document to look reasonably like the Word document. So far, it has been an... "adventure." Let's just say that my .css file has gone through several changes, involving changing the units of measure from inches and points to ems to pixels... all of which resulted in various problems.
The client wants the HTML document to also be the hard copy, so we are also trying to get the template to fit onto 1 page, as the Word document does. This is an interesting problem, because depending on how the margins display, and the text size, the text may take up more lines in HTML than in Word, and then go onto another page. We are also trying to get all of the images to have the same proportions as they do in the Word document.
Inches: Measuring the structure in inches worked fine, until I realized that image sizes cannot be set in inches in CSS or HTML, so I couldn't make them proportional with the rest of the structure.
Ems: Measuring the images and text in ems, I could make them proportional to each other, but structure can't be set in ems, so I couldn't make the structure match.
Pixels: I had to set the width of the body to less than 800 pixels, so that it would fit in 800x600 resolution. I don't know how the browser decides to translate pixels onto the printed page, but I believe this caused the margins to be less wide than in the Word document, because the text ended up taking more lines, and going onto the next page in the print preview.
I personally feel that what we are trying to accomplish is not realistic or advisable, given how differently things will display (and print) in different browsers. But I thought maybe somebody might have some advice on either how to accomplish the goal, or what to explain to the client the limitations of the technology are. I just don't feel that I have enough experience to know how to approach the problem, or to confidently tell the client what is possible to deliver and what is not.
Thanks for any help or advice. I can provide more information (e.g. the Word document or the HTML I'm working on) if necessary; if you want to take a look, please comment with your e-mail address, as I'd rather not publicly link to those documents.

mozbackup

Recently at work I was given a fast new PC to use. Transferring my mail and browser preferences have always made it a pain to get on a new machine. This time, however, I found MozBackup, a piece of freeware for backing up and restoring Mozilla profiles.
It schlurped up my Thunderbird Mail profile, mail archive, address book, accounts - everything except my Extensions - and I was able to restore that archive onto my new machine. The same for my Firefox browser experience.
Hoo hah, that was easy. Anybody who has to transfer to a new Windows box, I can't recommend this enough!

rollover objects
Date: 01/20/07
(HTML Help) Keywords: browser, html
Hi everyone.
I wonder if someone can help me with my HTML-problem :)
I'm trying to create a rollover object (i work in Dreamweaver MX 2004, but use the code functions more than the graphic interface)... After i create it it works perfectly well in "preview", but in the real life, when i upload it, the only thing i can see in the browser is the white square with a small red cross in the corner instead of the object (although the link does work). Preview browser is identical to the one i ususally use, i tried it in different browsers, checked the uploaded images... all is fine.
Thanks in advance

I've added a number of blogs to my RSS feed. However when I use the firefox/delicious bookmark panel on the left side of my browser, it shows blog entries alphabetically. What I want is to see the latest entries, and not have to scroll through everything trying to find the latest update.

Mozilla and Quicktime Problems
Date: 01/23/07
(Mozilla) Keywords: browser, web
A few months ago my quicktime player seems to have become power hungry and took over all uses of sound clips, video files, and flash sites/games in my mozilla web browser. I've tried playing with the settings and nothing has changed, the only thing that has worked is deleting quicktime, but when I did that my iTunes wouldn't open anymore, and I'd rather have iTunes then vidoes and such. I downloaded Internet Explorer the other day and it plays videos without quicktime and it works just fine, except that Internet Explorer keeps freezing up my computer and making funny noises.
Anyone know how I can get quicktime to leave my firefox alone? :(

Javascript issue

Hello I am having what I think is a cross browser Javascript issue. I have a class that moves a page element around. Its not working in IE and I am not sure why. Any input is welcome. I am new to Javascript.
I get no errors in Firefox but I get an error from IE that says "Error: Object does'nt support this property or method".
I tested various things like "getElementById()" and "setInterval" in a test script in IE and they worked. I cant tell what property or method the error is referring to even when debugging with Visual Studio.

Identity/proxy troubles
Date: 01/24/07
(Computer Help) Keywords: software, browser, java
Um… I need some help here.
There is this persistent hacker who has been hacking me for some time now. A friend of mine told me download a software which would veil my IP address so said hacker couldn’t find me anymore. Ok. I did that. (Steganos Internet Anonym 2006).
Now the thing with this software is … just about everything. If I turn on the IP-blocking, none of the pages in my browser open. O.o
None of the other blocking options (like cookies, Java Script, etc.) are switched on, so I think it might have to do with the IP-blocking itself.
I am a total loser when it comes to IP and identity, and I don’t have a clue as to how to use proxy servers.
Does anyone know this software? And if yes, what am I doing wrong? Any tips?
And would this even prevent hackers from finding me and hacking my real IP? I really don’t have a clue.
Well. I know the hacker’s IP, and have put it into the block-list of my firewall. (I have Norton 2005 on Windows XP right now, and last month I used Zone Alarm.)
Yeah. Sorry about the onslaught of questions, but I’m kind of … well. Desperate… and annoyed.
Tips and help would be greatly appreciated.

Dreamweaver Question
Date: 01/26/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: browser
I have a Dreamweaver question. I'm using a template, and have had to make changes to it before (adding new buttons, etc.). I've uploaded to the site I've worked on and all the pages have taken the new change, no problem. This time I change the banner and uploaded it but none of the pages that use the template are changing to the new banner. I've cleared my cache a few times, even opened up a new browser... nothing. Is there anything I can do besides reuploading the other pages, which would be a long process because someone on the other end has made edits and I can't seem to be able to download the pages and would have to copy/paste the code.
I hope I'm making sense.

WMP device sync kill
Date: 01/26/07
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: browser, web
This is driving me crazy. I listen to an online radio station VIA Windows Media Player (11 I think, look Vista like) and the thing that bugs me the most is every time I plug in my thumb drive while listening, I get a prompt about sync stuff. Thing is, I don't want this (and I don't what extra files on my thumb drive, only 256 MB, and I tend to get big files to put on it) because I don't download music at all. Hell, almost all my MP3 files I have could fit on a 650MB CD (or whatever that smaller size that was the most common)
Is there a way to tell Windows Media to not even bother, or do I have to go back to using my web browser to listen to the station (and have to deal with upping the volume every time I play it)

phantom line break thanks to blogger?
Date: 01/29/07
(HTML Help) Keywords: browser, html, web
okay, so I'm not that well versed in HTML, but I know enough to make a basic website, which I have been working on for a while now and am finally just finishing up.
I want to have a weblog on the first page so I set up an account with Blogger. I think everything is okay, except in certain browsers Blogger puts in an extra line break in my menu header and I don't know how to fix it!
this is what I mean:
Blog page
versus
no weird line break!
I am building the page on a Mac using Firefox. when I look at it with Safari there is no break on the blog page. when I look at it with a PC using Firefox there is.
I tried to put that teal-green color as the background of the table row, but it didn't seem to work.
any advice? thank you so much!
(also, if you see anything else error-wise, let me know... and let me know if this post is not allowed. it has nothing to do with LJ layouts which are mentioned on the main page a few times. I am kind of desperate.)

New website launched; NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE

Just a quick update here.
I just re-launched Diana and My Wedding Announcement webpage, and I am having difficulties perfecting the CSS and HTML and how the page is viewed in different browsers. IE7 works great, Firefox 2 does NOT understand half the crap happenning and I have yet to try Opera or any other alternative browser.
Please take a few minutes to click around on the site, if you have access to different browsers, use them all and then comment here with any formatting issues.
Also, if anyone out there knows ANYTHING about CSS or HTML formatting for universal viewing, please, PLEASE contact me and give me hand. I would really appreciate it.
