1. Internet connection or laptop setting?

Date: 02/01/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, web

Hello, I've been having problems connecting to www.fanfiction.net for almost three days already and I cannot find what might be the cause. I haven't altered my internet settings or anything so I'm really baffled by it. I tried checking the same site from other PCs (at our school) and it works just fine. I'm using Firefox as a browser and even if I launch my Internet Explorer, it still doesn't show up.

Firefox always shows this message to me:

    The connection has timed out

The server at www.fanfiction.net is taking too long to respond.

    * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
    moments.

    * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.

    * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Please help me, I'm starting to get frustrated over this.

I think I'm particularly having difficulties with fiction sites. I cannot connect to http://slash.boywholived.com also

  2. Adblock bug, or Apple tomfoolry? (using SeaMonkey)

    Date: 02/03/07 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser

Why is http://images.apple.com/dotmac/images/index_btn_joinnow.gif blocked by the adblock filter that blocks www.mac.com/, but http://images.apple.com/dotmac/images/index_title_home2.gif isn't?!?

I'm not seeing www.mac.com in the string images.apple.com/dotmac/images/btn_joinnow.gif anywhere ...

The filter "www.mac.com/" does even worse:

    http://images.apple.com/t/2007/us/en/i/3.gif loads
    http://images.apple.com/t/2007/us/en/i/4.gif is adblocked
http://images.apple.com/t/2007/us/en/i/5.gif all the way to http://images.apple.com/t/2007/us/en/i/8.gif also load. So does 1 and 2.

What about that "4" triggers "www.mac.com/*" exactly?

Adblock v.5 d3 nightly 42 running under SeaMonkey 1.0.5 and Windows XPSP2 (has IE7 as non-default browser) - not the most recent of everything, but no reason to believe updating would fix this either at the moment.

  4. mySQL, BLOBs and image streams

Date: 02/09/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: browser, html, database, java

I was wondering if anyone had thought of a useful way to get images out of BLOB fields in a database table and send them to a rendered HTML page inline. This whole calling another script via a URI that fetches the picture as a served "page" via a second request seems very redundant.

I've seen the client side encoded binary tricks through javascript, and they are clever but rely on the client's browser settings too much to be comfortable. The fact that IE refuses to implement the data: URI is a pain in the royal parts. An idea I had was to save the results as temp files and serve them that way, but again, terribly redundant - not to mention hard on the server.

So have any bright sparks come up an elegant and W3C friendly way to pull an image binary from a BLOB and include it in an tag?

(I'm aware of the database overhead with many BLOBs - this is just an exercise in extreme cleverness)

Date: 02/10/07 (Opera Browser)    Keywords: browser, google

Well, I tried their latest version. They still don't support Opera, sadly. Seeing how that Opera is my main/only browser, I uninstalled Google Desktop. Looks like it would have lots of nifty things, but none of which would be required. Just kind of meshes your computer with the internet. Puts a few things at your fingertips like google mail, various news sites and things of that nature. It seemed a bit bogged down, maybe too much going on at once? I got a pretty power system, so I'm just not sure if that is the case.

Why dosn't Google support Opera yet? =/

  7. Hackers targeting your home LAN router / firewall

Date: 02/17/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, java, security, web, linux

This applies to any platform that runs Java, be it Mac, PC Windows or PC Linux. This also applies to any browser that supports Javascript, including all versions of IE, Firefox and Safari.

If you own or buy a Linksys, DLink or Netgear wired or wireless router/firewall box to allow you to share your broadband throughout your household, make sure you change the administrator password on that unit from the factory default. It doesn't matter if your router does not accept administrative connections from the outside - this attack comes from the inside of your network. (Most routers now ship with external admin access turned off, although you can turn it on if you need to get to your router remotely . . . but again, make sure you set a STRONG admin password if you turn that option on for any reason.)

A new exploit uses JavaScript and can access the routers settings from inside your network when you allow that script to run on your computer. The malicious code can be embedded within Javascript that you might want to trust, like - for example - a game applet. Simply surfing a compromised site and allowing Java to run in your browser is enough to get hacked. It may not trigger your browsers security settings, as it never attempts to access or change local files on your computer.

In the background, out of your sight, the script looks up your networks internal gateway address. It then attempts to logon to your routers admin panel using that IP. It can guess the password from one of about five typical login combinations that are widely used by almost all home router manufacturers as their factory setting. It takes advantage of the fact that many owners never change that password.

Once it has control, it changes the DNS settings on your router to point at a hackers "poisoned" DNS server. The idea is that when you browse to your bank (for example) using the correct URL or bookmark, the router looks at the compromised DNS server and sends you off to a phishing site that could look exactly like your banks login site. From there they capture your user ID, password, and of course your bank account.

Simply logging into your routers panel and changing the Admin password to your own unique password will stop this attack.

    1) Open your network settings, and look at the Status of your LAN connection. In Windows click on the Support tab. (Not sure how to get this on a Mac, anyone that knows feel free to chime in.) You should see a gateway IP address listed.

    2) Enter that IP address into the URL field in any web browser. That's the address for your routers administration panel.

    3) You will see a request to login. Try these combinations (or refer to your routers owners manual):

    User: (blank)
    Password: password

    User: (blank)
    Password: admin

    User: (blank)
    Password: (blank)

    User: admin
    Password: password

    User: admin
    Password: admin

Once you log in successfully, you will see your routers control panel.

    4) Refer to your owners manual, or surf the control panel (usually under Setup, or Password, or Administrative Settings) for the Administrators Password reset. Enter in the old password (factory default) in the first field, and your new password twice in the second and third fields, then save or apply your settings.

    5) Close your browser, and re-open it to the same gateway IP address, and test the login with your new password. Do NOT check any box that offers the option to remember your password.

Voila, you will not be vulnerable to this particular attack.

My background is obeying repeat-y and this is what I want. However, I want it to repeat vertically from a starting position only. I have specified it's starting position (which it respects when repeat is set to no-repeat), but it repeats vertically above as as well as below it's starting position when I ask it to repeat-y. 12. Internet Problems D:

Date: 02/22/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, spyware

The other evening at about 3:20 I decided to go to sleep for a while, so I turned off the monitor to my computer.

When I woke up, I turned on my monitor, and my computer was frozen. So I restarted.

After the restart, Norton came up. Which it doesn't usually do. And it starts getting all active in what I'm doing. 'Allow Internet Explorer to access the Internet?' and all that. Well I can't say I was displeased with that, until I tried to get rid of the icon, which was annoying me.

Anyway, I don't remember what the sequence of events was exactly, but, I ran Ad-Adware, Hijack This, and Spybot Search & Destroy, and got rid of a lot of spyware and stuff. My Internet wasn't connecting, so I restarted, and it wouldn't connect and I tried to fix it, and I restarted again, and blah blah, eventually it connected BUT..

..now nothing will come up in Firefox. Only Internet Explorer.

    Any ideas?

Things I have already tried, NONE of which have worked:

    1. Downloading another alternate browser (Avant).
    2. Checking for and downloading all new Windows updates.
    3. Reinstalling Firefox.
    4. Checking firewall settings. Firefox and Avant were checked on the Exceptions list.

I really have no idea what to do. And I found out that my torrent program isn't connecting me to any torrents, either. =/

    hey guys,

Thanks to everyone who commented on my last post. I am still on the same project, but this time I'm trying to do something else. Namely, to use the FileSystemObject to create a script that is going to make brand new HTML pages (based on a template on a dynamic page.) But before creating the pages it will allow the user to look at the server directory (which sounds kind of like what you could do if this were an FTP app) and let them select the resources to appear at certain locations on the template (and that's kind of like a picture gallery app.) I'm working with ASP (classic right now, but I might have to switch to ASP.NET.) Some of the functionality is easy to nail down, but others, like getting the directory structure to be viewable on the browser window, boggles my mind. Do you have any recs or know of any useful apps for any of the aspects of this project?

    Thanks.
