1. Scrolling Problem

Date: 03/07/08 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser

I have a cat who likes to sit on keyboards when I'm away. Sometimes, she hits the right combination of keys and changes some of my browser preferences. I was able to figure out all but one of the changes she made today. When ever I use my up/down arrow keys for scrolling pages, a curser appears and it jumps from item to item on the page instead of evenly scrolling down.

Any ideas what I need to do to change it back?

  2. Userinfo Codes

Date: 03/08/08 (HTML Help)    Keywords: browser, css, google

I've googled this so many times, but I couldn't find a valid answer.

In my userinfo coding, the font tags specify the font size as 1. This bothers me because on some browsers, the text is pretty large.

I just want to specify the font size to 8pt, so it works on all browsers.

I've tried adding a CSS stylesheet, but it never seems to work. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Is the font tags preventing the stylesheet from working?

Is there any way around this? Just wondering. If you'd like I can send the codes that I use, or you can view the source on my userinfo to see for yourself.

I really appreciate anyone who can help me, and sorry to be so much hassle! I know it's silly to be so concerned with a font size. But I would greatly be in appreciation to anyone who reads this and offers help.

    Again, THANK YOU!

  3. Script Problems.

Date: 03/15/08 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, google

My Grandfather's computer is running FireFox v2.0.0.12 and when he left on a trip everything was fine. When he came back apparently there are Script Problems.

Everytime he tries to open the browser an error message lets him know that:
    "Warning: Unresponsive script

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete."

I thought initially that his homepage (myway.com) was having issues so when I went over to fix it, I changed his homepage to google, tried it again and the same error message.

He has no addins, extensions, or themes. It doesn't matter what his homepage is he gets this script error.

I know I'm not much of a computer guy so any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

  4. Registry Booster2

Date: 03/17/08 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: browser

I just downloaded and installed a program called "RegistryBooster 2". It said that I had well over 1300, yes 1300, assorted problems. I can clean 15 of them for free. I would need to purchase the full program in order to clean up the whole thing. Do you think this program is accurate in its findings? Is it worth it to spend $30 on it?

If it matters, I have WINXP Home and use Mozilla Firefox as my browser.

  5. font-size-adjust

Date: 03/21/08 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, html, asp

I love the idea of font-size-adjust and its aid to legibility. But I'm having a problem about how to apply it in practice.

Let's say I define .signature { font-family: Venice, Genoa, cursive; } in my stylesheet. Venice happens to have a .415 aspect. Should I specify that here? I understand that this will scale the fallback cursive font (if Venice and Genoa are missing) to the metrics I am looking for. Great so far.

The problem I foresee is that I have not specified the font/size/size-adjust to be used generally, relying on the users' defaults—a good usability practice. Therefore I don't know what aspect it has. If we assume (for discussion) the browser is set to use Verdana (aspect .58) my Venice looks far too small to begin with. So what does it matter if the substitutes match Venice, because none of them are going to match Verdana.

How do I always scale as appropriate to match an unknown font aspect? Can I simply use font-size-adjust:inherit whenever I change the font, or do I need to? The W3 says the initial value for this property is none, though the value is inherited, so can I rely on the (arbitrary) parent element to have the correct value or not? If there is no initial value, what am I inheriting? I could apply a font-size-adjust to BODY (or HTML…which is preferred?) so that I do have a basis, but if the user's chosen font didn't have the same aspect, I'd be throwing off his preference for font size, right?

Please help me clarify what the best practices for using this property are!

Problem: My USB ports don't want to work anymore. I received an iPod Shuffle for Christmas and was able to download iTunes and set it up with no problems. It worked fine for about a week but then all my USB ports balked on me and I don't know what to do. My mother also received an iPod Shuffle, could attempting to accommodate both on one computer have screwed something up?

  13. ff3's sucky awesome bar

    Date: 02/01/09 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but personally I HATE Firefox 3's so-called "awesome bar". It's totally not awesome. :/

Therefore I thought I'd share what I did to make the URL bar more like it was in Firefox 2.

    1. First I installed oldbar.
    2. Then I typed in about:config in the address bar, and "urlbar" in the filter.
    3. I set browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped to true so it does NOT display things from my bookmarks or my history, and browser.urlbar.maxRichResults to 20 just 'cause I only want 20 urls showing in the address bar.
    The end.

    Thoughts, suggestions, & opinions welcome.

  14. Cookies help

Date: 01/20/09 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, web, yahoo

My Firefox recently, yesterday, shit itself and refuses to store my cookies. It deleted all my cookies for staying logged into websites, all my blogs and e-mail sites, etc. I put them in and when I close and reopen the browser they are forgotten.
    Here are the details:

-I'm running FF3 on Windows XP Home. I've had M3 for months now.
-Recently I installed WeatherWatcherLive and Peer Guardian2. I have since uninstalled PeerGuardian2 and restarted the system to no avail.

-I logged on yesterday to find all my sites had logged me off, but the saved passwords and saved form data I had for them were still there.
-The settings are still the same, 'keep cookies until they expire' when I close FF and open it again all the cookies are gone.

-I have attempted to click all the "keep me logged in" options but they did nothing. In fact, I'm looking at the page info for my yahoo and it's telling me that I haven't visited the page before today, when I just signed in 4 minutes ago and then closed the browser.

-I looked it up and tried to recover a lost profile; that failed. Then I tried starting in Safe Mode and tell it to begin with original settings; that failed too.

I'm hoping something can be done short of a clean reinstall.
    Help please, if you can.

  15. text version

    Date: 01/14/09 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser

For some time now I've been curious how difficult it would be to use the Mozilla codebase to create a terminal-friendly text-mode browser. Obviously capabilities would be limited (single-size fixed-width font, 16 colors at most, etc) but surely it is possible...in theory.

I once asked Thomas Dickey about it, since he has oodles of experience with ncurses and lynx. He agreed it may be doable, providing there are interfaces that don't rely on pixel-level positioning and such. I have no idea about that.

  16. Firefox 3 Crashing?

Date: 01/05/09 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, google

I've tried searching on-line, but nothing has helped so I'm hoping someone hear has an answer.

My Firefox at home keep crashing.  I can't seem to find any rhyme or reason for it -- it's not certain sites, it's not the number of tabs I have open, but in the course of an hour, it will usually crash 2-3 times.  I uninstalled and reinstalled 3.0, in case something funky had happened there, but no luck.  My b/f has the same problem with his as well.

Oddly, I have 3.0 at work and have yet to encounter any issues there (and I have more add-ons at work than at home).  My b/f went back to 2.0 at work and hasn't had any issues, but one of his employees is experiencing the same crash issues with 3.0.  I run on Xp at home, and Windows 2000 at work, in case it's abrowser compatibility thing.

Is there any way to troubleshoot this or is there a history on this somewhere?  My google-fu is failing me mightily, and I much prefer Firefox to other browsers out there.

  17. SeaMonkey questions

    Date: 09/26/08 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser

A few years ago, it took me a few tries to get to where I could use Opera, and now it's my default browser. I've tried SeaMonkey from time to time, and I just got the latest version. I like it a lot, but have a couple of problems. I use Digsby IM and really like clicking on it to get to MySpace, where it logs me in and lets me avoid MySpace's habit of changing their login page address so that I can't do it automatically with Opera's wand. If I have no browser open, or Opera open, clicking from Digsby takes me to MySpace on Opera. When I have SeaMonkey open, clicking on Digsby's link opens IE! OMG I hate that! I don't want to see IE. I'd like it to open the link in the browser I am using or the default browser.

I'm using the mail client in SeaMonkey. The white background is killing my eyes, it's so stark. I can change the color behind the e-mail content, but I want to change the entire background of the program to light grey. It's this way in Opera's mail client and I think in Thunderbird, too. My Windows theme settings are already that way, so it isn't using my system colors even when I tell it to.

I saw something online about changing the name iexplore or iexplorer.exe to seamonkey, but don't know how to do it. I can't find iexplore or iexplore.exe, even though I have xplorer2 to search for files.

Haven't shared in a while. My web design teacher had a "mini contest" going on where he needed a design for a page, and wanted to leave it as a way to get more experience in design and possibly earn a 4gb memory stick in the end.

I did this for fun, really.

    http://lisacerilli.nfshost.com/web_design2/programming/php/

I have no idea what it looks like in IE yet as I haven't done much browser testing on it, or anything else off of a Macintosh, so... Hopefully it doesn't explode (we haven't learned much about browser hacking yet anyway).

    Feedback?

Edit: I'll be changing this as I get feedback. There may still be bugs as I won't get a change to debug until I get to school on Tuesday, but hey. Any progress = good progress. Thank you for the feedback!

  19. Opera HTML Email Display Problem

Date: 03/06/09 (Opera Browser)    Keywords: browser, css, html, linux

I just upgraded to Opera 9.63 browser for Linux, and one thing I am having trouble with is I use black backgrounds for everything and I can't figure out how to specify white text for HTML emails. So unfortunately I keep ending up with black text on black backgrounds in HTML emails, or sometimes dark gray on black. Does anyone have an idea how I can fix that?

I've tried changing all colors in mime.css to white except for the background but this only seems to work for text emails not HTML emails. Any ideas?
