1. Different proxy settings per WebBrowser control application

Date: 02/01/08 (C Sharp)    Keywords: browser, web, google

    Greetings

I am rearchitecting an existing enterprise application written in .NET 1.1, and one of the requirements is that, on a given machine, several instances of an application that employs the WebBrowser control may be running, but each of them needs to employ separate HTTP proxy settings.

I know that the WinAPI call to InternetSetOption() can be used to set proxy settings on a system-wide basis, but I was wondering if any of you knew a way to set proxy settings for a WebBrowser control on a per-application basis.

This particular application predates my employment, so while I have had to wade through its incredibly poorly-designed and messy code a few times in the past, I am not eager to do so again. I do know that the previous application managed the above functionality, though, so I know it's possible.

Any help or information is appreciated; I have Googled the subject often and the only response I've found so far (which I know to be false) is that it simply cannot be done.

    Thanks for any help.

  2. Javascript: flyover window

Date: 02/04/08 (Web Development)    Keywords: browser, java

I would like for a small flyover to appear when the user clicks a link on their current page, much like what is seen here at the bottom of the page with the "Share/tag this page". What I'm finding online is javascript to open a new browser window, which isn't what I want. I looked at HPs code but it didn't help much, so I'd appreciate help from you folks here! TIA

  3. Wireless Networking

Date: 02/04/08 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, web

Question/Problem: When I hook up my wireless router, my PC no longer connects, but the Wii can, without a problem

Operating System and VERSION: PC: Windows XP SP2, and then whatevers on the Wii

Web Browser and VERSION: Firefox 2.0.0.11 for the PC, Opera for the Wii

Your level of experience: Seasoned with certain things, beginner with routers

Duration of problem: It's been happening for awhile. My ISP (Cox) says it's not them, but since I can connect with at least one internet-capable machine, I'm inclined to believe. It worked for awhile, but then stopped, and then would again, and then stopped again. We usually have to keep the router disconnected most of the time.

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot? I'm not sure of which I can take. I've tried it with the router on, but the Wii off, and still have nothing. It's already password-protected and all that good stuff.

I'm not sure if this info matters:
We're not sure if it's the computer (it's slowly dying a painful death). We're purchasing a laptop as soon as tax return comes in (should be by the end of the week), and we're hoping that both of us can get on the computers at the same time. We're purchasing a new tower in a few months (laptop is a priority, since I'm going to be going out of town, and still want to be in better contact than just phone with my husband).

  4. Remote connections that aren't remote.

Date: 02/07/08 (C Sharp)    Keywords: browser, database, asp, sql, web, google

This is both a SQL Server 2005 and a C# question, so I'm posting it in the community that probably isn't as sick of me asking questions yet...

I've googled this extensively for the past two hours. All of the pages I'm coming up with either (a) have something to do with ASP, (b) have something to do with surface area configuration, and/or (c) have something to do with SQL Express. None of these is the case with my problem.

I'm trying to create a data source in a C# project. When I test connection (or just try to hit OK), I get the following error:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.

I am using SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition. Both the SQL Server engine and the database are on my computer, though they are on different drives. I can connect to the database with SQL Server Management Studio (I've been building it all morning in Management Studio). Despite it not being my problem, I have checked Surface Area Configuration, and "Local and remote connections" is checked. I have stopped and started SQL Server Browser, as I have also been advised to do by some pages, with no effect. This is a Windows Application, not a Web Application, and there is no ASP involved.

Anyone have any ideas of what might be causing this problem other than remote connections? Thanks.

  7. breadcrumbs

Date: 02/14/08 (PHP Community)    Keywords: browser, web, yahoo

Hi.. I have to add breadcrumbs to my company's... My first thought is to write a script that will create the links dynamically.

Do you guys have any experience or input regarding implementing a breadcrumb script/solution before I get started?

    Thanks

    For reference: Breadcrumbs

"There are 3 types: path, attribute, and location. The location breadcrumb is the one most commonly seen. It is a visual display or a page's location within a site. For example, Yahoo! uses location breadcrumbs when it shows you that the page you are on is categorized:

    Health>Children>Bed Wetting>Treatment>Cleaning Up

With this, users can see where the page they are on is located in the hierarchy of the site. A 2003 study by Rogers and Chaparro reported is Usability News asked the big question: does Breadcrumb navigation positively affect a user's experience?

There has only been limited research on breadcrumb navigation. However, the studies that have been performed have shown that breadcrumb navigation makes site navigation simpler and more efficient (Bowler, et al. 2001; Maldaonado & Resnick, 2002). In 2003 Bonnie Lida, Spring Hull, and Katie Pilcher examined if study participants would use breadcrumb navigation when given the task of finding several items on a website. They also studied what other methods the subjects chose to use, such as the browser back button or search fields. They hypothesized that breadcrumb navigation was more useful for browsing than for searching for specific terms."

A couple of years ago, I used this code to build a rich text editor for an inhouse CMS at work. One of the smaller bugs that I've never bothered to deal with until now was that whenever you used the editor in a Firefox/Mozilla browser, the page never stopped loading. I've been Googling and working on it today, with no success.

Has anyone else ever had this problem? If so, what did you do to fix it?

  12. I've learned something today...

Date: 02/20/08 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: browser, css

I'm prototyping an AJAX page at the moment, getting the DOM and the response handlers to play nicely together before actually bolting the server on underneath. This basically involves creating a transport object and setting its responseText to some hard-coded JSON, then calling my response handler directly.

All went swimmingly until this morning, when I tried adding "updating" effects - for the moment, just change the background-color around the field(s) in question and then change it back. They simply wouldn't show up. I put it down to the sheer speed of doing things with no network activity - must be changing and changing back really fast! - but when I bogged the response handler down with a second's worth of useless tasks and the changes still didn't show up, it was clear something wasn't right. I wasted about two hours on increasingly desperate CSS hackery before stepping back and trying something else.

The problem is that the browser isn't updating the display until it's finished working its way through the entire function chain - the onchange event calls showUpdating then doAjaxUpdate which calls update_onSuccess which calls showNotUpdating, and only then does the display update as a result of everything that happened in all those functions - by which time the style is set back to how it started.

The solution - break that chain. Instead of being lazy and just calling

    updateExperiments_onSuccess(transport);

directly, wrap it in a setTimeout:

    setTimeout(function(){updateExperiments_onSuccess(transport);},1000);

Now, the onchange event calls showUpdating and doAjaxUpdate - the timeout is set up, but that first chain then ends and the display is updated. Then the timeout kicks in and starts the second chain, after which the display is put back as it was. (The 1000 is only to be certain I'd see the effect on screen for a significant amount of time. The important part is that we're using setTimeout at all.)

Of course, this is a far more accurate representation of what will happen during a real AJAX call, too.

I've encountered similar problems before, trying to persuade the display to update immediately, and always given up, re-designing the page to avoid it or finding a messy work-around. Next time, I'll give this a try.

  13. Connecting to online database using MySQL Query Browser

Date: 02/21/08 (MySQL Communtiy)    Keywords: mysql, browser, database, sql, web

    Hey all

I'm having difficulties connecting to an online database.

I uploaded it online using the webhost's database manager.

As I would need update the database very frequently, therefore going through the webhost way (using the database manager to update) is pretty troublesome... I thought of connecting to the database directly from MySQL query browser.

So I have the following details (they are all correct, as given and checked by webhost):
    Database name
    Username
    Password
    Server IP

When I start up MySQL query browser, it shows me this "Connect to MySQL Server Instance" window, prompting me for:
Stored Connection (i filled it up with 'nameofdatabase' @ 'server IP')
Server Host (i filled it up with 'server IP')
Port (it's 3306 by default, so i left that number there)
Username (i filled it up as given by webhost)
Password (self explanatory, filled that up too.)
Default Schema (i filled it up with database's name)

After filling all those up, I SHOULD be able to connect to my database. Instead, I keep getting this error:
"Access violation at address 00342F02 in module 'libmysql.dll'. Read of address 00000004."

What exactly does this error mean??? I really need to connect to the database ASAP. Would appreciate any form of help. Thanks!

  14. IE6 and Transparency

Date: 02/21/08 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, java, web

    Here's my deal.

Try to visualize it, because the site's not live yet.

I have a pretty cool moving background for a website that my client really likes. However, I feel like it interferes with the readability of the content and just makes it look a little less professional.

My possible solution is to put the content in its own div with a border and a partially transparent background. I get my readability and it looks a little more... grown-up... but the moving background still shines through somewhat.

I accomplished this by using a partially-transparent .png as a background image. I know there are some CSS codes that will make something partially transparent, but I haven't seen any that work in all browsers. The .png seems to work in all browsers but, of course, IE6. it's totally opaque in IE6, defeating the purpose of the background thing.

My question is this: is there a way to perform a browser check and conditionally make there be NO background image if it's IE6? I've seen If IE statements in javascript, but is there a way to specifically isolate version 6 -- and then, I don't know, link to a different stylesheet or whatever would need to be done?

I'm not super amazing with javascript, but I know the very basics and have muddled through a lot of java-script-requiring stuff with the help of tutorials.

Alternatively, am I being a dumbface--is there some easy way to make the background color of a div appear as partially transparent, even in IE6?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

  15. Page Test, anyone?

Date: 02/24/08 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, html, linux

I have a newly constructed page up that I need tested before proceeding further. The page is a new template page for the portfolio site and is light years ahead of the last one. It's built using XHTML strict compliant CSS; I need to see how it explodes in order to add the correct browser fixes.

I'd be delighted if you could screen capture what you see, and email it back to me at shirley_at_velochic.ca along with the OS and browser types and version numbers. I especially need to know what Linux and older Mac users are seeing.

    Thanks!
