proxy to non-us server or ip?
Date: 01/16/07
Keywords: virus, web
greetings!
i am a former arabic student that would really like to practice her arabic by watching a certain lebanese channel that, while it luckily has a webtv option on its website, is for SOME REASON not accessible to the us. its definitely not for political reasons, as this is the entertainment/bullshitty/rich-youth channel, very superficial and known for it. i believe its because the channel is available int he us with direct tv-- so maybe there's a non competition thing.
while direct tv is expensive, the webtv option at the channel's website is cheap and convenient! but as soon as they register my ip as coming from the us, the programs don't get through.
is there any way around this? i thought of some proxy thing but i haven't had success in finding something good. either it doesnt work or its too slow. is there anyway to just disguise hte isp? any reliable and non virusy programs? if its a proxy, i guess it needs to be a fast connection, cause it has to allow for streaming video.
any ideas are very welcome! thanks so much for your time and thought energy!
best,
lisa

No internet
Date: 01/15/07
Keywords: software, microsoft
The other day I was on my computer and a blue screen flashed up, the PC rebooted itself too quickly for me to see what the blue screen said. Then once it had rebooted, as soon as I tried to log on to my Windows XP account, the blue screen came back up and said that there was a serious driver error (paraphrasing here) and that it could be something to do with a software or hardware fault. Windows refused to start because of this. It said to check any new software or hardware installed ( I haven’t installed anything new for ages, besides drivers for my video card).
So it kept doing the rebooting thing, until I started Windows in Safe Mode with Networking (for the internet) and luckily all my files etc were still there and usable. I could connect to the internet etc. About a week beforehand, I had downloaded drivers from Nvidia for the video card, as my Sims 2 game kept crashing and the report back from Microsoft said it was a problem with the video card drivers. So I uninstalled those completely and what do you know – no more blue screen when I logged into XP normally. I thought the problem was solved, but unfortunately now my internet isn’t working (I am posting this from work). I have broadband, and there is usually a little icon down in the corner of my taskbar with two little computers, showing my LAN connection to my ISP (I guess) and it is just not there anymore. If I try to get my ISP to connect, it just says that the local area network connection wasn't found. I thought it might be a problem with my modem, but I don’t think it is because before, when I was still on dial up, the icon was still there, only it just showed a red cross over it to say that it wasn’t connected. The lights and everything on the modem are working.
I reinstalled those Nvidia drivers, thinking that might solve the problem, but unfortunately not. The blue screen hasn’t come back though.
I really know nothing about video cards, (my last computer had crappy onboard graphics) so I’m taking a guess here that the card controls the networking for the computer? If so, would it be a hardware issue where a new video card would fix it? I have been wanting a new one anyway, but I don’t want to get one yet if that’s not the problem.
I tried doing a repair installation of XP but no dice. I’m hesitant to do a complete reformat because I have about 160 gigs of stuff I’d have to backup onto discs first, and that is a royal pain in the butt – especially if I did the reformat and then discover that a new video card would have fixed it all along!
I hope some of this has made sense to someone.
These are my specs from where I had the PC built:
AMD Athlon 64 4600+ Dual Core
• Nvidia Geforce 6600GT 128MB PCI Express Video Card
• 1024 MB DDR2 RAM
• Seagate 200GB Serial ATA Hard Drive
If someone could offer some advice, I'd be extremely grateful!
Cross posted.

Scanner and Camera Wizard Problem ..
Date: 01/14/07
Keywords: software
I have windows XP home. I have a Lexmark X74-X75 all-in-one scanner, printer, copier and fax machine installed. It works fine; however, the "Scanner and Camera Wizard" won't work with the lexmark software installed, I have to manually use the 'Add-Device' wizard to make the Scanner and Camera Wizard actually work .. the problem is, I have TWO of the same printers listed, and if I delete either one, the Scanner and camera wizard fails to work for some reason. I only need 1 listed, not two .. so how come I can't delete one and have the wizard still work?
EDIT: actually, the "Scanner and Camera Wizard" doesn't really work even when I manually add the device. It brings up the dialog box to select which printer I want to use (both are the same device) .. but then I get an Error that says:
(The Error)
How come the wizard won't work either way?
it's kinda annoying.
(Screenshot of what I mean)
Thanks for any help!

Port won't hold cable

Hey guys, I need some help because my computer is being a pain in the ass. It's a Toshiba laptop purchased in 2002 or 2003 and it's running Windows XP. The Cat 5 cable keeps wiggling out of the port, causing me to lose my connection frequently. I tried two other Cat 5 cables but the same thing happened, which leads me to believe that it's the port. Here's the question: how much would it cost to bring my computer into CompUSA or some place like that and have it looked at and repaired? My friend told me that because it's a laptop it's harder to work on and more expensive to have repaired. He also said that I can buy an external port (I think). How much would that run? Thanks for your input!

Picture "Solarization"?
Date: 01/13/07
Keywords: asp
I just got a new computer. I decided to get an 17" LCD Monitor (BenQ). I previously had a CRT Monitor.
Sometimes the picture quality is bad, like it's solarized (is that the right term?) and the colour quality isn't that good. I'm also disliking the fixed resolution aspect.
Is this the problem of the monitor or my video card? I'm not sure what type of video card I have.
Please help??

torrents
Date: 01/13/07
Keywords: no keywords
Ok so i'm new to using torrents and all was going along fine until they all started wanting to be downloaded in Limewire. I was using Azureus and that was great, seemed to be faster then Limewire for me at least. The major problem with them wanting limewire other then i don't like it, is that when i use limewire it seems to slow everything on my computer down. So i was wondering is there some magical setting to make the torrents stop downloading through Limewire, or at least a way to make it stop sucking so much and making my computer slower? Thanks in advance!

I accidentally uninstalled something called "SiS..." on my computer.
My OS is Windows XP. My brother says the "Sis" program has to do with my monitor connecting with the computer.
Now whenever I turn my computer on, the monitor is a black screen and says "Out of range."
How can I fix this? Or who could I contact?
The Monitor brand is NEC.
Looking forward to your reply!

help with wireless router ..
Date: 01/03/07
Keywords: no keywords
I just installed a new belkin wireless G router on my cable connection, and my sister's laptop is sharing the connection with a new belkin G wireless card. We both have newer dell model computers, and windows Xp home.
The connection works on both computers, except sometimes the connection on my computer is very slow or just non-operational at all. My sister has said it has kicked her off about once or twice. Either my sister is using most of the bandwidth, or the router is just slow .. setting up the connection was easy enough, but now it's just causing problems. Without the router, it works fine .. (but my sister depends on the router cause she has no other way to access the net on her laptop.)
When I check my network status, I see:
Connected
100.00mbps
There is no other way I can check or modify any settings .. it doesn't tell me my signal strength or anything, just how many packets are being sent and recieved. Most of the time, more packets are being sent then are being recieved. There is also no way to check how much bandwidth is being used by each user.
So, is there a way I can increase the bandwidth on my connection? it was hard just posting this post because the router makes my cable connection as slow as dial-up sometimes. It was even going slow when my sister said she wasn't using her computer or her connection, so I don't know what to do. It shouldn't be this slow .. my sister is only right above me and within the range ..
Thanks for any help.
;(

Web Calendar Software...does this exist?
Date: 01/02/07
Keywords: php, software, web, microsoft
Hi, I'm looking for some commercial software, more specifically, a calendar that can be hosted on a webserver, accessed and edited by multiple users, give the admin different control levels, and have a ton of room for customization. I'm doing web development for a non profit organization.
Here is the problem, everything that I've provided and shown my boss is either 1. not *pretty* or professional looking enough or 2. not what he needs (canned software that can't be customized enough to fit his organization's needs.
I've tried to tell him that other than having a small company develop the program entirely from scratch, there is not really anything else we can really do.
The closest thing I've come to his approval is the calendar available at http://www.mhsoftware.com, but he doesn't like the day view mode of the calendar.
I've told him instead of shelling out all kinds of cash for software to be developed specifically for him we instead could use certain elements of the calendar and the rest could be php scripts containing forms, tables, etc. Well he still has me looking so what I want to know is, has anyone seen a commercially available calendar application that can be hosted on the web and have a ton of room for customization?
Cost doesn't seem to be an issue either.
The example he gave me of what he wishes it to be like is his calender on...AOL. :(
The biggest problem is this is an exact copy of the email I get from this organizations office when I presented them with a letter similar to this.
"I THINK WE SHOULD GO WITH THE MICROSOFT - I FEEL SURE IT WOULD MEET OUR NEEDS FOR THE TIME BEING."
That was the email I got...wow. I'll call MS right up and have them get to work on the application...It's becoming a real problem trying to get them to understand anything.
Thanks for any help x-posted to a few other places.

good video editing software...
Date: 12/31/06
Keywords: software
i am in need of some good video editing software. i am sick of having to use like 4 programs to do what i want! i have a digital camera that takes video in .mov format. i need to edit that down (cut off the ends) and maybe lighten the gamma a little sometimes, and convert that into a usable .flv file that's relatively small, like youtube does. i have found that if i uploaded the .mov file directly to youtube, the sound and picture are off so i don't want that.
i installed a flash movie player on my site and i downloaded all the stuff i had previously uploaded to youtube and each file (about 3 minutes) was less than 10mb. whenever i try to use a program to convert to .flv (i have tried a number: riva, winmpgconvert, supersomething) it either doesn't let me edit the file (ie cut off the beginning and end) or the output is huge (50mb or more) or both. sooooooooooooo i would like software that can do all this for me!
sorry if this is confusing! thanks for your help in advance!

Freezing and crashing troubles

Help, please?
I have Windows ME. Over the last few weeks, when I'm online (with NetZero, but using Internet Explorer), usually when I have more than one window open, but not always, an IE window freezes up. When I do CTRL + ALT + DELETE, it usually says "IExplore" is not responding, but it never actually works to "End Now", the blue screen comes on, and I have to shut the whole computer down.
Is this too vague, or can you think of any tips or solutions?
Thanks ahead of time.

Be prepared for my lack of knowledge...

When I test my PC specs to see if it's compatible with a game I want, and it says
"CPU: Recommended: Pentium 4 or Athlon XP or better
You Have: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+"
What the hell is it talking about? My processor? Because it comes up with the speed and a different sub-heading underneath, but I'm sure that my Athlon is my processor! It comes up twice so I'm confused :( Like when someone keeps asking if you're sure... and you were to begin with but the more they ask, the less sure you are!
Also, two rather silly Q's
1. Does "Memory" = RAM? It does, right >>
2. Do I have to have a modem with my PC to connect to broadband Internet? Or is the modem the box-thing most ISPs give you? *confused* Or is Dell talking about a PCI card & if so, do I need that?!
Yes, I'm trying to build a Dell :P They fool you into thinking you can customise your PC properly but can you? HELLZ NO ;.; They forced a Vista upgrade on me :(
