I have a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop connected wirelessly to my DSL network via a Belkin router. I get about 3 meg internet on my desktop (which is plugged directly into the router), but on my laptop, it takes upwards of 40 seconds to load any page. Bandwidth tests tell me I'm running at about the same speed, and there's no way it's right. I've messed with all of my network settings. When I get on the wireless network at other spots, I get the speed I should be. I can't stand it anymore. I want to throw my freaking laptop out the window. By the way, I'm running fully-updated Windows XP.

    Help me!!!

  2. A little more complicated than cntrl-alt-del

    Date: 12/27/06     Keywords: web

I consider myself to be pretty technically inclined, I can usually fix most problems myself, but this one has exhausted me. I built this computer myself a few years ago, but never really used it much until recently. The problem that I've noticed is my USB ports respond, but won't provide power out to any devices. For an example, when I plug my digital camera in (powered by batteries, therefore doesn't need any power from the USB ports) my computer recognizes and works with it just fine. But on the other hand, when I plug in a web cam (requires power from the USB port) the system doesn't even acknowledge it's connected. My web cam has a power light, which doesn't turn on when I connect it, and the web cam is not being listed in Device Manager. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for both the USB controller and the web cam several times, to no avail. I've checked all the motherboard jumpers and BIOS settings and can't find anything wrong there. I even did a complete clear of all my BIOS settings. Still nothing. Is there some reason Win XP would be keeping power from going out, or something else I'm not thinking of?

ASUS P4S8X-X motherboard, all setting restored to factory default, on board USB 2.0. Win XP with all updates. Everything else functioning normally.

Okay, so for Christmas my father built me a computer, he does this. haha.
And Everything on the computer is fine and all, but for some reason it keeps freezing up after I've been on it for awhile. Like it completely freezes and I have no choice but to press the on/off button to turn it off and I heard that's not good for the computer so it sucks that I keep having to do so.

My question to you guys is, what should I do? Should I let him restore it or something? This sucks so bad! :(

    thank-you so much in advance.

Unsurprisingly, the brands I've never heard of are cheaper. Can anyone here advise for or against "Fantom," "Beyond Micro," "US Modular," or "Cavalry"?

In addition, are there any major differences among the well-known brands in terms of reliability?

  5. Transferring files to a new computer

    Date: 12/23/06     Keywords: no keywords

Okay, so.. I'm getting a laptop for Christmas. The problem is, all my files - pictures, music (over 30gb, and that's all my ipod holds), documents for school, etc - are on the computer I'm using currently. I have no problem with simply re-downloading the programs like Limewire, Last.fm, AIM, and so on, but I don't want to spend the many many hours/days it would take to get all my music back, and I don't want to lose any pictures. My question is this: how can I transfer my files WITHOUT losing any of them? I know I can easily burn documents and stuff to CD, but I have entirely too much music to do that.

If it helps, my OS is Windows XP (for both the computer I'm using now and the new laptop). I know that the new laptop has wireless LAN built in, and we have a wireless connection on the computer I'm using now, so.. could I enable document sharing, put all my files in the shared documents folder, save them to another place on my laptop, and then delete them from the old computer and the shared documents folder?

I'm completely illiterate when it comes to transferring anything from computer to computer... I've never had to do it before. Thank you for any help you guys can offer! :)

Hi, my home computer crashed and I have some files on my C drive that need rescuing.

Basically I need to know what you guys would recommend as far as a CD Boot disk. I'd prefer something where I can drop to a command prompt - the more DOS-like the better.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

and I am wanting to be able to use them on another computer.
How can I do this? I'd like to transfer them there.

I usually have to get my friend to save them and then give them to me when I change computers, but I was thinking I could get them as files.

You know the bar at the bottom of a browser that displays URLs when you mouse over, and in Firefox it's where the forecast/music control addons sit? For some reason, it's disappeared on my Firefox. I tried updating it and removing the addons and restoring toolbar defaults, but as I'm not sure when it poofed, I don't know what could have triggered it. It's more of an annoyance than a problem, but does anyone have any ideas for getting it back?

  10. iTunes launch failure

    Date: 12/18/06     Keywords: no keywords

Hi, I'm new here and I'm hoping someone can help me out. I'd really appreciate it.

A few days ago I was moving my icons on my desktop and I accidently set my iTunes icon on top of my Firefox icon. A pop up came up, but I don't remember what it said (although I wish I could). Afterwards, I couldn't open iTunes. It'll appear in my taskbar for a splitsecond and then disappear. I can't even open my iTunes folder in My Music folder.

I tried following this: iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch failures. I created a new account and tried opening iTunes there and it worked. So I tried Remove iTunes Plug-in, Remove iTunes Preference files, and Check for content files with issues, but like I said I can't open my iTunes folder at all. When I moved my iTunes folder onto my desktop and opened iTunes, it still wouldn't open but a new iTunes folder appeared in My Music folder.

I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, but it still won't open.

I've also posted this at the Apple.com support discussion board and I haven't gotten an answer there. I'd really appreciate some help. This is quite distressing. I really don't want to have to delete my music and import all of them again :[

  11. Laptop beeping

    Date: 12/17/06     Keywords: asp

So I just got a new laptop on Tuesday. First laptop ever. It's an Acer aspire 3100. It beeps at me. It will just randomly beep. It's not coming from the speakers, its coming from inside the laptop. Also I don't think one of the bottom parts is screwed on properly but I don't have a screwdriver and am wayyy too afraid to try and take it apart. Could the thing on the bottom not being on properly be causing it to beep? or is it something else?
    Thanks

  12. Ugh!

Date: 12/16/06     Keywords: security, web, yahoo

At first I thought it was just LJ, now I have no idea what the problem is, and it's driving me freaking crazy! I don't think I've ever been so freaking frustrated in my entire LIFE.

The first day that I got a livejournal, I changed my viewing options to dystopia, I had the website remember my password. I went to get onto livejournal today, and my password is no longer saved. I went to log in, and clicked "remember me" but it will NOT log me in if the box is checked. If I type in a random username to bring me to the other login screen, it tells me my password security secure, and I want standard. But when I click standard it doesn't remember it. I log in, ask it to remember me, do whatever, I have to go into the management, change my viewing options to what I want them to be, I'm done, I close the window. I come back, and I have to do the same thing OVER, and OVER and OVER again. It won't even remember my VIEWING OPTIONS, for God's sake! I just went to check my Yahoo! mail, and is what it looks like. WHAT IS THE ISSUE? HOW CAN I FIX THIS? I am going completely bonkers, and I'm on the verge of punching a hole in my wall. Obviously my temper isn't the greatest, but this is the most irritating thing EVER.

    Thanks for any help.

Ok. In the bottom right corner of the screen there's a flashing icon next to the date that is either an exclamation mark in a yellow triangle or switches to a bomb(ball with spikes). I can't right click to try to bring up a roll window to click exit because like a left click it sends me to this friggin website virusbusters.com. I don't have their software, never downloaded it. I cleaned my internet history, cookies, saved text, etc etc. I've also run Mcafee virus scan, spy hunter spyware scanner, and spybot scanner. None of them can pick this up and I don't know where to look for whatever's causing it on my computer beyond add/remove programs and searching my hard drive with *virusbuster*.

    Any suggestions? : /

Does anyone know how to download streaming flash videos on Jumpcut?

I was trying to make a video, and both Premiere and Windows Movie Maker were giving me issues. So I finally found Jumpcut and got my movie made. But now it's stuck there!

It's a flash file, but using Video Downloader with FireFox isn't working. I get three different things to download, one an HTML file and two "jump.swf" files that don't play anything.

I want to have a copy of the video on my computer and upload it to YouTube as well, so can anybody help?

So I pretty much know nothing about computers other than how to go to websites and talk on AIM. So I thought I'd come ask the people who know best.

For the past few months when I try putting in a disc it doesn't automatically start. So I go to my computer and try to open it and it says there's no disc in there. I go to run and it still doesn't read the disc. hHw can I fix this?

I have an 'e machines' computer and Windows XP. I read all the information in the userinfo that I SHOULD state but I have no idea how to find out most of them. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

  19. My poor laptop

    Date: 12/12/06     Keywords: no keywords

I posted the other day about my laptop monitor flashing. Now it has another problem. The right 1/3 of the screen is messed up. The only way I can describe it is to say it "pixelates" images. Little dots form around words, people faces, etc. I'm taking it in to get looked at tomorrow morning, but it will take them about 2 weeks to even look at it.

My question is this, is it possible that the monitor flashing and pixelating is caused by the same issue?

Also, another problem with the same laptop is the system tray time. It's wrong a lot of the time. I'll set it and a few days later it will be off by hours. What could be the cause of that?

And, just to make another point, this is far from the first problems I've had with this computer. Before it was under warranty though, so I wasn't that upset [though for the first 6 months, it was getting fixed by HP for a greater amount of time than I had it in my possession]. And there is actually another problem with it aside from those three [the right arrow key doesn't work most of the time - I've taken it off, cleaned it, tried it without the key, etc but the result is the same]. *sigh*

    I've got computer woes.

Thanks in advance for any help/info you can give me.

  20. Well, that was weird...

    Date: 12/11/06     Keywords: no keywords

I've just been installing some machinery in our CAD facility, and I had one machine that would not load into XP. I got the grey bar of pre-boot, but it died at that point. Rebooting got you the "boot menu" choices, and ANY of those would give you the grey bar, and then die before even loading the splash screen.

I brought it up to my desk here and connected it to my KVM, and it worked. Got it back down there, and it died again.

I put it down to second hand machinery, and dragged a replacement unit from the store. That had Win2K on it, and it BSOD'd on first boot. I swore at that point. Then I decided to try a swap of keyboard/mouse/power leads/network leads to narrow down the scope of what may cause the same issue on 2 PCs. No go. One static grey bar, one BSOD even with different peripherals.

In a fit of irritation, I connected the grey bar rig in place of an operational unit with the intent of eyeballing it until I was calm enough not to reshape it..and it booted fine!

Tried moving the BSOD 2000 rig to there, and that worked too. Hmm. Weird. What had I NOT swapped out before? Um...nothing obvious...well, the CRT, but that's of no relevance..is it? It displays fine in DOS/BIOS/Ghost...

I plugged the CRT from the BSOD/Lockup desk into the machines that were previously there, and...they locked up/BSOD'd again. Changed to another CRT - both worked fine. I then tried this CRT on several other machines (ATI Rage/Radeon/Intel), and they all, without fail, died at boot.

It's a new one on me that a CRT can cause problems this severe, on different chipsets, different drivers etc. Anyone else run across this? I've now pulled and marked the CRT as FUBAR, but it's got my curiousity piqued..
