1. Making Premiere and YouTube get along!

    Date: 02/04/07     Keywords: no keywords

Using Windows XP and Adobe Premiere Pro v7.0.

We all know that YouTube is a great way to find videos. Using programs like Video Downloader can make it a great SOURCE for videos as well.

    OR CAN IT?!

I'm trying to make what should be a fairly simple video anthology, using clips from YouTube. The issue comes in converting the videos saved from YouTube into usable formats. They download in FLV format, and I've been converting them into MPEG. But, I just cannot make it reliably work in Premiere. Some of the videos have worked fine. Some get "Unsupported format or damaged file" errors.

I just tried a new method tonight. I had been converting them with the Riva Flash Converter. But tonight I found Vixy.net, and gave that a shot. I tried it with two files. One on, the video imports fine and plays fine in the monitor. But the sound does not transfer to the timeline. There are no audio peaks, like the clip has no sound. But it does, and it plays in the monitor window. When I try to import the other file, Premiere freezes. It also froze Windows Movie Maker.

So I don't know what to do here. Is there a way to covert FLV files that will allow me to import them to Premiere successfully? Please help!

  2. Providing download links?

    Date: 02/04/07     Keywords: no keywords

I'm wondering how to provide a download link that you can directly right click on to download. I usually just provide a link to my server and then everyone has to go to the site and find the folder/file they want to download and right click from there. I'm just hoping there's a more convenient way for me to do it so people don't have to browse the folders on my server. I use dreamhost if that matters.

    Thanks in advance :)

  3. Internet connection or laptop setting?

    Date: 02/01/07     Keywords: browser, web

Hello, I've been having problems connecting to www.fanfiction.net for almost three days already and I cannot find what might be the cause. I haven't altered my internet settings or anything so I'm really baffled by it. I tried checking the same site from other PCs (at our school) and it works just fine. I'm using Firefox as a browser and even if I launch my Internet Explorer, it still doesn't show up.

Firefox always shows this message to me:

    The connection has timed out

The server at www.fanfiction.net is taking too long to respond.

    * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
    moments.

    * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.

    * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Please help me, I'm starting to get frustrated over this.

I think I'm particularly having difficulties with fiction sites. I cannot connect to http://slash.boywholived.com also

  4. Logitech QuickCam for Notebooks - doesn't work with ANYTHING

    Date: 02/01/07     Keywords: software, web

Hey all, I'm about at my wit's end trying to get my webcam to work with ANY chat program. I purchased the Logitech QuickCam about four months ago and it works seemingly at random with MSN Messenger and AIM...but lately it hasn't worked with either. I installed the software as directed and am currently still able to record video and take photos with it on my computer, but whenever I try to connect to a friend's camera through MSN Messenger or AIM, it looks like it's trying to do something (the LED turns green), and the chat client SAYS it's connecting, but after 30 seconds, nothing happens and the chat just ends. Like I said, it was working about two months ago and I was even able to get the microphone to work (another issue I was having), but I have looked all over AIM's support page (wholly unhelpful) AND I've called Logitech, and have come up completely emptyhanded.

I don't know if it's a firewall issue because my friend turned off his firewall once and we tried connecting...nada. The webcam is also listed in my firewall's Allowed Exceptions, and selected as the default video and voice device for both my computer AND for AIM. I have no idea what's going on; please help!

I'm connected through a wireless network and the internet seems to be working fine on both my friend's end and mine...no idea what's going on.

Please help! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  5. tab completion lost, please help

    Date: 01/31/07     Keywords: linux

I am currently running gnome on debian linux 3.1 on a hp intel machine at work and the all the terminals seem to have stop recognising the tab key

The keyboard driver is Generic 105-key (Intl) PC

This happening after my machine lost my networked home directory and stopped functioning. In order to resurrect the machine my gnome settings gconf had to be deleted.

Once I was logged in I was able to return the desktop toolbar to looking how it did, turn off the system bell and start work again

Unfortunately now terminals (I have tried the standard terminal, gnome multi term and xterm) have stopped putting any character on stdout when the tab key is pressed. This means that tab completion no longer works which as you may appreciated is more than a little annoying, ctrl D still works, alt-tab to switch between windows still works and the tab key still produces a response in editors like Vi and XEmacs and also in firefox and thunderbird so it isn't as straight forward as the keyboard mapping is wrong (it still appears to be standard UK)

Any ideas as to what might of gone wrong?, Restarting the machine doesn't seem to of worked

I have made inquiries with my own systems team but they haven't answered yet presumably as at the end of the day this isn't the end of the world

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

edit:Sorry forgot to mention this is using tcsh shell not bash

edit: tab completion of environment variable name still works incase its relavant

    Date: 01/27/07     Keywords: html, microsoft

as posted to '[info]'computerhelp: my parents computer has started getting this dialog box constantly: whether you hit yes or no, nothing happends,, except it reappearing after a random ammount of time. i have run scans with avg, adaware, and spybot, and nothing they find appears related or affects it. i had the task manager tell me what process created the box, and it points me to explorer.exe. and also if i end task the box, i get this: makes no sence for it to be from microsoft since they have that entire automatic updating system.. and there was no priority updates anyway other than ie7. anyone know what this might be and how to get rid of it? (and something happened to lj's html formatting, sorry if this is hard to read)

  10. Identity/proxy troubles

Date: 01/24/07     Keywords: software, browser, java

Um… I need some help here.
There is this persistent hacker who has been hacking me for some time now. A friend of mine told me download a software which would veil my IP address so said hacker couldn’t find me anymore. Ok. I did that. (Steganos Internet Anonym 2006).
Now the thing with this software is … just about everything. If I turn on the IP-blocking, none of the pages in my browser open. O.o
None of the other blocking options (like cookies, Java Script, etc.) are switched on, so I think it might have to do with the IP-blocking itself.
I am a total loser when it comes to IP and identity, and I don’t have a clue as to how to use proxy servers.
Does anyone know this software? And if yes, what am I doing wrong? Any tips?
And would this even prevent hackers from finding me and hacking my real IP? I really don’t have a clue.

Well. I know the hacker’s IP, and have put it into the block-list of my firewall. (I have Norton 2005 on Windows XP right now, and last month I used Zone Alarm.)
Yeah. Sorry about the onslaught of questions, but I’m kind of … well. Desperate… and annoyed.

Tips and help would be greatly appreciated.

  11. Video camera to computer question....

    Date: 01/23/07     Keywords: software, web

I am using a Panasonic Mini-DV model: PV-GS9. It has the port to be hooked up to the computer and the computer recognizes it as a "web cam", but I can't find any software online that will work to be able to transfer video onto the computer/internet. I have baby videos and my husband's wrestling shows I wanted to put online, say, on youtube.com.

Is there any kind of program anyone might suggest? I can't find any that work and I don't have a working cd rom drive right now.

    Thanks! ^_^ ~Min

I'm using the FTP built into windows XP/Windows Explorer.

Only, my FTP "Network Place" login keeps getting deleted every couple of restarts. It's there upon one restart, but gone the next, and I have to keep re-creating it. It's not hard to re-create, but I wish it would stay there for convience sake. I don't have any programs that would remove/delete it, so i'm not aware of what's going on.

  15. Files Becoming Corrupt, Crashing Explorer

    Date: 01/20/07     Keywords: virus

Basic info: Windows XP Pro running on a computer I built from a barebones kit a couple years ago. Pentium 4 2.8 gHz, 512 MB RAM etc. I'm running a legal version of Norton Anti-Virus with up-to-date virus info and all of my virus scans have come back clean. I also tried Trend Micro House Call, same.

I have two hard drives. C is its own separate drive and just as Windows and my apps. The second hard drive is partitioned into D and E and has no OS. D contains all of my multimedia (large quantities of images), E is miscellaneous, unorganized back-ups.

Over the last month or so, I've started to have problems with still images stored on the D drive. A couple would just stop working and I suppose become corrupt. Windows Picture Viewer would say "No preview available" and the image would no longer open in Photoshop or whatever. At first I thought these were PNGs that had been saved with the wrong file extension but in the last week, the problem has gotten worse. JPEGs that worked fine that I have had backed up for several years are becoming corrupt and Windows Explorer started to crash when accessing a certain folder (the "humor" folder of images, ironically).

Upon restarting my computer, Windows would occasionally run some sort of file recovery for "orphaned files" and this would solve the problem but no longer. It seems like every time I move files from one folder to another (all on the D partition), more images are corrupted and more folders have started causing Explorer to crash.

Again, I have updated by virus definitions several times and run two different virus scans to no avail. I opened one e-mail 3-5 months ago that Norton notified me of containing a virus but it was caught and there weren't any problems after that (till recently).

I have tried defragmenting the drive but it always shows up as being a whopping 1-3% fragmented.

I am in the process of going through each subfolder with Bad Copy but it's a very slow process and in spite of Bad Copy's claims, it is not fixing my spontaneously corrupted images.

For whatever reason, the E partition of this same hard drive hasn't had any problems, but it only sees about 5% of the use that the D drive does.

I'm GUESSING my hard drive is failing but... is this the case? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to save the data that remains in tact? Why are image files slowly getting eaten? It's 15 GB for starters. I was going to copy everything over to my husband's back-up drive but every time Windows comes across a corrupt file, it halts the copying process. As of now, I'm using Nero Backup for the first time and... I have no idea what I'll do after that. Go through every subfolder with BadCopy, I guess.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Sorry for the long post and thanks for your time.

  16. Questions for the extremely savvy =)

    Date: 01/19/07     Keywords: no keywords

Alright, so I'm what you might call...semi-computer savvy. I mean, I know more about computers than most everyone else I know, but I come crawling to you begging for advice!
I'm looking to buy a laptop, somewhere around August or September of this year. I've been looking around, and I think I might have taken a liking to the HP Dv6000T notebook. But getting it with all the fancy gadgets I want, it'll presently cost around $1600.

I'm wondering, is HP a good choice? Should I splurge and get the best of everything I can for my laptop? How much memory is enough? Should I wait for the price to go down, or by then will it be useless and outdated?
I have a dell dimension 2350 desktop, and half the time I feel like throwing it out the window. It's slow, it freezes all the time and I can barely run Itunes and internet at the same time. Who wants to live with that? Anyhow, I'll mostly be using my notebook for Word, watching movies, downloading, and surfing the internet. Speed and multitasking capabilities are very important to me.

And, is anyone coming out with new, cutting-edge stuff that I might be interested in waiting on? Better processors, or something? I've heard rumors about something called a Quad core, but I haven't been able to find much on it. Are they going to have those for laptops any time soon?

Any advice at all you have would be greatly appreciated by me. =)

  17. Error: System Too Good For Your Paltry Games

    Date: 01/18/07     Keywords: no keywords

At least that's the general idea behind the reason (or so I'm told) I can't seem to get sound when installing my old games on my Windows XP.

Once many, many moons ago, I received this new and completely awesome game for Christmas called Wolfenstein 3D. Y'know, the one game that pretty much made first-person shooters as popular as they are today. Recently I rediscovered my beloved game and put it on my Windows XP Home lappy. It runs completely fine, but I can't get any of the music or the sound (save for that annoying PC sound effect option, which sounds more like my computer crashing than anything else) to run. In a nutshell, I was told by more computer saavy persons than myself that it's because today's computers are too advanced for it to run the unforgettable MIDI music score and the breathtaking sound effects. Some sort of reverse engineering from what I gather.

My question is this: if what I'm saying makes sense and this isn't just a personal phenomenom, is there some download somewhere that can fix this or something I can do to get mah music back? Because playing that game without the proper music/sound effects is a real downer and makes the experience far less stellar.

  18. merging

    Date: 01/17/07     Keywords: microsoft

I have two similar Microsoft Word documents that I never thought about tracking changes on. I want to merge them now and for Microsoft to tell me the differences between them. Is there a way to do this?

Prolly not but I thought I'd ask just in case

(Btw, these two docs are just my "address books" with a column for name, address, etc. It is now a 9 page document, each line a different person so I'd rather not go line by line to see the differences I made on the home one and the work one if I could)

    Many Thanks as Always!!

  19. Page cannot be displayed?

    Date: 01/17/07     Keywords: web

    Hello.(:

For the past five days or so, the ONE website that hasn't been loading on my computer is Deviantart. Now, I frequently use this site, and why it's suddenly shunning me, I have no idea. Everytime I attempt to visit this site, I get your average "this page cannot be displayed" error. I've had friends visit the site, and they all say it works perfectly for them.

I'm running on Internet Explorer 7.0(and Netscape, which it also won't work in), and I'm pretty sure I've tried everything. I've deleted cookies and temporary internet files. I've even tried resetting the brower. The site isn't blocked either as far as I can tell. I'm not sure, but is it possible that I've had my IP address banned for some reason? If so, is there any way to verify this?

    Help?XD Thanks very much.

  20. having a problem with 'save as' dialog boxes

    Date: 01/16/07     Keywords: no keywords

Hi, i'm Running Windows XP home.

The "Save as/Open File" Dialog box seems to stall/lag when saving files. It doesn't appear in just some programs, it appears in windows save as boxes too.

Anyone know how I can fix that? it never did that before (it used to save instantly) and it's definately not supposed to freeze like that. When I want to save a file, like for instance, in Editpad or notepad, when I press the 'Save' button, it takes 15 seconds or more to save the file, and after I press it, it appears to freeze, then it saves.

    I appreciate any help. ;)
