Laptop screen flickers

Hello, I have a HP Pavilion [this one]. Just recently my screen has started to flicker. I've searched online and from what I can tell, I'm going to have to send it in to get serviced. However, I've sent this laptop in many times before [mainly because my disc drive would not work and they kept telling me nothing was wrong with it, then it magically came back fixed after the 6th time of sending it in to HP]. Anyways, I'm certainly not going to take it apart [it's still under HP's warranty].
Basically, I just want to know if there is anything I can do besides taking it apart or sending it in? I'm betting no, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway [I really don't want to wait the 2 months it takes for me to get it back every time I send it in].

laptop help

My laptop is having an issue. It no longer is able to charge itself by plugging it into the wall. It's now simply running off of the battery. One night I tripped over the power cord after setting it on the floor. There's no outward damage. What would be my first step in repairing this? I don't want to have to take it to somebody to get it fixed since I'm not rolling in money. Maybe purchase a new power cord? Could there be some internal damage?

Stupid Windows

I don't normally just ask for help, most of the time I'll dig throught he internet and find the answers to my questions on my own. After this week I'm so burnt out and tired, I don't have the energy and I just wanna go play WoW lol.
Couple weeks ago my monitor died and thanks to a very nice paycheck I was able to go out and get a new new crisp 21" wide screen LCD. I get home with it and i'm like a kid on christmas morning. I unwrap it, clean off my desk, set it up, plug it in, and turn on my computer in the first time in those several weeks. System check is great, everything loads, then the lovely screen pops up with do I want to boot into Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last Known Good COnfig, and Start normally. Ok, no biggie, windows is a ho.
All the safemodes start to load the files then the system hangs.
Last Known and Normally will either start to load then hang, or just reboot the machine on the spot.
I've tried other monitors and I get the same results. I'm guessing somehow something got corrupted in Windows, the lovely OS that it is, and that's what's put me at the state I'm at. I'm curious if there's anyway to get around this as far as any of you have encountered and get windows back to normal. Normally I'd just suck it up, reformat and go along my merry way, but I don't have the energy to do so right now. lol And if that's what I gotta do, I guess I will. heh

Another question

Sorry to post again, but I just have another question. I'm just burning my photos onto a dvd at the moment, but when I click to 'copy files to cd' it keeps coming up with an error for each filel. I've tried backing them up through Nero but that didn't work either. I usually have no problems doing this, especially through 'my computer' and was wondering if anyone has any idea of why it won't let me copy the files?

Slideshows

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question. But I want to make a slideshow with some photos with music etc but I'm not sure what kind of software I could use for this. I have Windows movie maker but it's just so difficult getting the slideshow onto a DVD.
I wanted to make a thing at the start and in between the photos, with a collage or something for each country that I visited. Does anyone know if any software would allow me to do that? I tried making a collage in powerpoint and transferring it over, but that didn't work :( I'd appreciate any help any of you have to offer :)
Also something that's free and that I can download now would be great, or you may know of a program I already have..or help using windows media player (transferring to dvd) :)

Black Desktop
Date: 12/05/06
Keywords: no keywords
Hi everyone, this is a great journal!
Anyway, I'm having a problem with one of my computers. My family just got me a new computer for Christmas, and we put our old one in my brother's room. I decided to take my graphics card out of the old one and put it in the new one. Well, now on the old computer, I can't see the desktop.
I have tried everything I know. All I know is that originally, the old computer had something called "Intel Advanced Graphics" or "Intel Extreme Graphics"(It's an onboard VGA slot). I tried putting my graphics card back into the machine, and I was able to get to the desktop...but my inexperience led me to uninstall the graphics card. So now, I'm guessing...my computer doesn't have drivers for both the original Intel onboard slot and my graphics card. I really don't know what to do.
The computer starts up fine, and I can see everything up until after the black Windows XP loading screen. My problem is I can't see the desktop to install the monitor drivers.
I also tried going into CMOS and changing my settings from Onboard to PCI and vice versa.
If someone could help me, I would really appreciate it. Again, I think it's great that there are still friendly people out there willing to help!
Thanks,
Austin

Need help with External Hard Drive
Date: 12/04/06
Keywords: no keywords
I have no idea what's going on with my external hard drive but it's suddenly decided not to work anymore. When I plug it into my laptop, the usual 'ding dong' sound comes up but it doesn't load or show up in My Computer. Another sound that pops up are three 'ding ding ding' if I plug the USB cord into the port again.
I hope this makes sense as I'm confused as to how this happened.
Thanks.
[Edit] Okay, I've just figured out that the three dings in quick succession mean that my laptop doesn't reconize my external anymore. I've also tried plugging the hard drive into the older desktop located in the living room and that's not working out too well. I would really like to fix this problem without me having to reformat my drive as I have important school files on it.

Viruses & adsl.

This sounds almost exactly like my problem:
The symptoms are:
- No web pages get displayed for any of the websites
- If we reboot the pc/xp then internet web page access
works fine for the first few minutes. After that
it will not work. Tried both IEand Mozilla. But every
thing in the setting seems to be fine. Checked the
Tools Options, etc/host etc.All the connection settings
are proper with DHCP enabled, Automatic IP address, DNS
address etc.
though:
- ping works fine
- nslookup also works fine.
it shows the correct ip address to hostname mapping
I tried MS Antispyware beta1 and AVG Free both found some viruses
and of course rebooted the machine. But no use. I still ended up
with the same problem.
Finally I started removing winsocks entries in the registry. After that
I could even use ipconfig and nslookup.
I tried system restore from the control panel. Wow. It worked.
I restored the system to the day where I had no problem to access internet.
After restore, the pc boots on its own and then finally, the problem is gone.
Since I restored the system to a backdate, all the visuses are also
got restored. Again used Antispyware beta1 to scan the pc to remove
all the
affected Drives. Also, used AVG Free to remove remaining viruses.
The solution:
Use system restore.
There,in case anyone can help me with this(pretty, pretty please!?)In my case System restore doesn't work,Windows re-installation(few times),didn't work either. Also, after I reboot,I still can't open pages in any browser,it just allows me to connect. Without rebooting my pc I can't connect at all. And sometimes even that doesn't help. My dial up works fine,as you can see.
I'm not a computer expert,I know only basics,so please bear with me. Tnx.
x-posted everywhere,because I'm desperate like that.

Any help would be appreciated :)
I can no longer burn CDs or DVDs using Nero. I could use another program, but I'm so used to what Nero that I'm hoping I could fix this problem...
I've tried:
Using different blank media (CDs and DVDs)
Burning different items onto said media
Uninstalling Nero. Rebooting. Reinstalling Nero.
I still get the same error message over and over and over.
Any ideas? Thanks!!!

Windows Media Player
Date: 12/02/06
Keywords: no keywords
I have some dvds which are different region coding.
When I put it in Windows Media Player it says it won't play cause it's Region 1 and I'm set on Region 4. But then when I try to change the settings, this message is written: 'You can change your region a limited number of times. After changes remaining reaches zero, you cannot change the region even if you reinstall Windows or move your DVD drive to different computer'.
God that's annoying. Any way to fix this to make it possible to have an unlimited amount of region changing or is there some program you can download which DOESN'T have a limit?
It seems very unfair about a limited number, but then, I've ALWAYS hated region codes. Evil.

Can't write to CDs anymore. =/
Date: 12/02/06
Keywords: virus, spyware, microsoft
Hi. My computer is a Compaq Presario SR1011NX, with Windows XP installed. After not having done so for a while (I know, bad thing for me to do), I decided to back-up my important files (text files like writing, artwork stuff, etc). Ever since I had this computer, the only way that I've backed up files was to use XP's built in deal to copy the files to CD-RWs. And that process has worked just fine and good.
But now, I'm having some serious problems with that.
I collected together said CD-RWs and go to clean the old files off of them... and they won't delete. So I look around a bit, and see that I'll just have to erase the whole CD-RW -- okay! Only, there's no option to do so. The option just isn't appearing. Puzzled, I do some more poking around, some more tests, and now I know what's wrong. Apparently, whatever writing ability my CD drive had is... gone. Doesn't work. Any attempt to delete or even add files onto the CD-RWs is met with this error message:
"Files on this CD-ROM drive are read-only. You cannot copy or move files over to this CD-ROM drive."
Any attempt to take off the read-only status on those files results in:
"An error occurred applying attributes to the file: E:\path\file Access is denied."
I tried a third-party CD-writing program (NTI CD-Maker 2000 Plus) installed on here, and tried to erase the CD-RW or tinker with files on there, the error message was:
"No supported CD-RW drive detected."
So I tried copying files over to both a fresh CD-RW and then a fresh CD-R. Both times, the wizard for copying files wouldn't open, and I instead got this lovely message:
"E:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function."
I then checked to see if things like games would run by popping in The Sims, and that ran fine, so... it just won't copy/write to CDs anymore, or let me mess with the files off of data CDs. It'll read the files and let me access them, but I can't delete or alter them. Any options involving writing to/copying to/deleting for CD-Rs and CD-RWs just don't appear at all anymore.
On the My Computer screen, the drive still reads as "CD-RW Drive (E:)". Oh, and for the type, it's a Sony CD-RW CRX25E5, and the Device Status reads that it's working properly... even though it's not.
Basically, I have no idea what's going on. I never messed with any drivers or such, and my computer is clear of any viruses, spyware, and the like. I've tried contacting both Compaq/HP and Microsoft, but those attempts aren't going well. Hopefully I've provided enough information, and if not, let me know and I'll post more. Thanks ahead of time for any help on this problem! I just want to back up my files, as many of them are too big to fit on floppy disks (and I don't have anything like one of those nifty flash drives).

Laptop trouble

I have a brand new Pro Star laptop. (Only had it for about four days) I tried to start it a minute ago, and all I got was a gray screen. It worked fine this morning. It rained on the way to school, but there is no evidence water got inside the backpack, plus it is the pack that came with the computer so I should hope it would be reasonably water proof. The computer has a burny smell about it. Help me please, I am going to be so pissed if the thing is broken already.

Help! I turned on my computer this morning and it wouldn't boot up at all. The light underneath the On button stayed yellow for a while, then stopped, it never turned green to boot up. I'm absolutely flabbergasted as to why. I shut it down correctly last night. The only problem I can think of is I uninstalled the IE 7 update and all of the extras that I added. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Question:
Just recently got a 500gb external HD. I don't want to leave it as one giant sector. But instead would like to have 2 250gb or 3 (160,170,170gb) partitions or compartments or whatever the proper term is. I've heard that there is a way to do so within windows but I don't know how. Is there a way to do so within windows or is the need of a software needed?
Thanks to any responses and guides.

Agh, my computer hates me!
Date: 11/28/06
Keywords: virus, antivirus
My computer has been quite jackassical lately. Last summer, it started shutting down right when Windows loaded, and even when I went into safe-mode it continued the behavior, showing that it was either a boot-sector virus or hardware problems. So, first I took it to my girlfriend's brother who she said could probably fix it, he 0-filled the drive, but I guess he couldn't install RAID so then I took it to a local computer shop, it was fixed and according to the person, the only problem was that it got out of RAID formation (which I'm not sure if that was actually what the problem was). Even before this, every once in a blue moon at startup it wouldn't recognize the RAID formation, but then just by restarting it, I got to Windows.
Now, it seems as if one of my HD's died (I now have it in RAID 1), which, wasn't TOO big of a problem, since I can just click "continue to boot" and I can still access the computer. But the last time I turned the computer on after the motherboard screen thing, at first it gave me a message "overclock failed" Then, once I restarted again I could get to Windows.
So, what the hell? Is my motherboard shot? Could BOTH of my harddrives be shitting out on me? Could it be anything else? I mean, I haven't cleaned out the case in awhile, but I kind of doubt that could lead to anything this bad. I have McAfee antivirus and firewall along with spybot and ad-aware, so I really doubt it is a virus. Help! I am seriously worried that one of these days it just won't start for me.

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered an error..
Date: 11/25/06
Keywords: no keywords
While converting a RM file to AVI using WinAvi, I got an error dialogue saying 'Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered an error and must close' or something along those lines, then my taskbar refreshed and that was that... I just ran Spybot & AVG and both came up with nothing.
I checked the event viewer and under Applications I found:
Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module netapi32.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x0000a3c0.
What could that of meant? It's kinda dodgy and now I'm abit worried about my system.
