1. Reinstall Windows???

    Date: 08/12/05     Keywords: web

I really need help with my Windows XP. It did work right for a bit of time (it's only one year old), but few months ago it started acting up and lately I can't do much without restarting it every five minutes. It get errors, it gets stuck, freezes all the time or stays busy for hours unless I restart it. It's maddening. I know I need to reinstall the Windows, but I have no clue how to do it (and I've heard stories that it's easy to mess up your computer if it's not done right). I asked my brother who has done it a couple of times, but he's too big of a jerk to help me out.

I would extremely appreciate if somebody gave me steps to complete Windows XP reinstalling, or give me a website address that has it.

    Please, help?

  2. Word and Printing

    Date: 08/10/05     Keywords: microsoft

At work, I tried to make a form using tables and Microsoft Word. They're going to be printed on label paper and applied to the front of our job folders as a checklist (we're an HVAC/Heating/Cooling company).

Anyways, when I view them on Print Layout and Print Preview, they look perfect, but when I hit print and they print out, only the first line is printed out. I've tried a lot of different things but I just can't get them to print out and I worked really hard on them, Word is such a messed up program with their tables (sometimes you hit enter and everything goes all scrambled for example). Any ideas? thanks guys.

  3. ethernet card? what are they talking about?

    Date: 08/10/05     Keywords: google

i was signing up for cable internet and one of the questions asked
"Will you need an ethernet card or adapter installed?"
so i am trying to figure out if I have an ethernet adapter on my computer.

i found instructions to locate whether or not i do by going to
    control panel...device manager...hardware....network adapters
now that i'm at network adapters i've found out we have a intel pro/100 ve

i googled it and found the intel page on it: http://support.intel.com/support/network/adapter/pro100/pro100ve/

but i still have no idea what it is or if it's an ethernet adapter

so my question is what is the intel pro/100 ve and is it what the cable internet company is asking me about. is it an ethernet adapter or what?

  4. dual vga monitors

    Date: 08/09/05     Keywords: technology

i bought a MSI MX4000-T128 graphics card, hoping to connect two VGA monitors to it. it supports "nVidia Multiview" technology, which is dual-display support. however, the only 2 ports on my card are 1 VGA and 1 S-Video. is it possible to connect two VGA monitors to this? are my only options 1 VGA monitor and 1 S-Video TV? i'm having trouble finding any information from MSI.

    thanks.

  5. USB drive issue

    Date: 08/08/05     Keywords: web

I run Windows 2000 SP4 on my Dell laptop. With no DVD burner and less than 10 gigabytes on my C drive, I managed to acquire an old (I think; it doesn't look like any of the images of current drives on the WDC site) Western Digital USB drive. It seems to be from the WD60 series.

It took some effort--originally by my father, who provided the drive--to get it working with my computer and recognized as the E drive. After that, it worked fine--until I shut it down to avoid overheating in the depths of summer. Once again, it took some effort by my father to get my computer to recognize it.

Just a few days ago, after being reassured that this time it would work after I reattached it, I unplugged everything (making sure to properly stop the USB drive before removing it). When I reattached the drive, it was once again not recognized. This time, my father claims whatever he did last time (he's kind of vague on what that was) failed to work, so he gives up.

Taking matters into my own hands, I repeatedly reinstalled drivers and downloaded new ones from the WDC website. I uninstalled and reinstalled a number of other USB devices. I restarted again and again.

The device shows up in Device Manager as a USB drive, and the drive itself shows up as a disk drive. It does not appear in either Disk Management or the My Computer window. Device Manager claims that it's working perfectly. In fact, the only thing there that it says isn't working perfectly is a PCI device, for which the proper drivers don't seem to be installed. I'm not sure if that's relevant to this problem or not.

  8. I have a very big problem

    Date: 08/08/05     Keywords: no keywords

So, my sister's computer is about 4 yrs old, its a Dell Inspiron 2500, running a Pentium III Processor. The computer came with Windows ME, which is really not such a good OS, so since my sister's computer has been having issues lately, I decided to reformat the hard drive and install Windows XP (using the CD taht came with my Inspiron 5150). All was going well until partway through the installation of XP. My computer then gave me some sort of screen saying it couldn't complete the installation, giving me teh error message "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR" and then it said "starting physical memory dump" and froze. when i later tried to reinstall XP, it took forever to get into the installation area, and when it finally did, it wouldn't let me delete the existing partition. When I tried reinstalling Windows ME, it told me that their was either no hard drive or teh hard drive was corrupt.

does anyone have any ideas about what might be wrong amd/or how to fix it?

    thanks so much!

  10. MP3 files now downloading as movies?

    Date: 08/07/05     Keywords: web

I recently downloaded an updated version of Windows media player. I don't remember exactly why, because I never use it, but ever since then, my PC seems to think it's funny to download MP3's as movie clips. Now, it works just fine for me to download an MP4 from iTunes, but when trying to download any MP3 from any website, I double check to make sure that it has an mp3 extension, download, and then nothing will open the file. It gives it an mpeg extension automatically. It saves as Windows media player as being the default system to open it with, so I'm pretty sure that's the problem, but I can't figure out what to do about it. Has anyone ever seen this? Can you tell me a way to fix it? :) Thanks!

  12. Puting together a computer system for an extended road trip

    Date: 08/07/05     Keywords: google

I'm 21, just about to get my class A license and do long haul trucking. I plan on setting up a computer system in the truck and I'd like your input.

    • A 12v power inverter (So I can hook 110v devices to the truck battery) and a power strip (of course)

    • A good laptop with a 17" screen. I would like to play new computer games on the coputer, is that possible on a laptop? Do some come with upgradable video cards?

    • USB 2.0 video in so I can play console games on my laptop screen.

    • Satellite Internet & Satellite TV (on the same dish)

    • External hard drive(s) or one 3.5" enclosure and multiple "internal" hard drives. Going with the enclosure would be more cost effective, I think.

    • I *plan* on downloading media while I'm driving, but I don't know how feasible this actually is. I've heard of people using satellite internet on a boat though, and I would think that would get a considerably poorer signal than driving. If anybody has some input on this point, I'd appreciate it.

    • High quality computer speakers and sub woofer to put on the dash, as the speakers the truck comes with will probably be poor quality (I won't own the truck so I don't to go to the trouble of puting in panel speakers).

    • I'd like to get satellite radio (Sirius or XM), which I'd like to run through the laptop and through the computer speakers, circumventing the truck's poor sound system altogether. Is this possible without additional hardware? If so, what would I need?

    • While I'm driving, I'll put my laptop as close to the dash as I can and run a trackball mouse to my lap so I can change playlists while driving (would be safer than leaning over to adjust a radio).

    • A cheap usb gps locator and google earth for directions and to keep a detailed map of where I've been.

    • I'll probably pick up a large tv/monitor (around 24", I'm thinking) that is HD ready for xbox 360 coming out this fall. Any input you have on a really good tv/monitor would be appreciated.

If there's anything else you can think of, let me know. Money isn't really an object as long hauls pay very well. Thanks :)

  13. Pop Up help!

    Date: 08/04/05     Keywords: web

I keep getting this box pop up that says "Information" and then says "Now it is Searching with Old Logic." It has a symbol that that is three blocks ontop of each other and they have the letters "A", "B", and "C" on them in light blue letters. I click ok and then it just pops up again, sometimes like, 20 times in a row. I am going to post a picture of it, so you can see. I went into "add/Change programs" or whatever it is, and removed the program that matches that program (called "D-Helper Web Driver"), and they still popped up and I restarted the computer, and it's reappeared in the "add/Change programs" area! What is this, and HOW do I get rid of it?!

I work from home (recent change) and my home office pays for my DSL and allows me to hook my personal computer up through a router so I don't have to pay for an additional internet connection. I've never had more than one computer hooked up before and wondered, since my home office gets into the work computer every night for database updates, can they could look inside my computer as well?

When I restart, and try to reopen my documents, a pop up warns me that "last time I opened this document, serious errors occured." I've got a lot of stuff on these documents that I need to get to ;/ I did a Virus Scan with Norton but nothing came up. Help! I don't want my boyfriend's dad to kill me!

  17. Just how worried should I be...

    Date: 08/01/05     Keywords: no keywords

My comp's been making a bit of noise recently, did sound like it was prolly a fan but hadn't noticed before and thought maybe I was just noticing it more recently... well now it's making a louder noise so I downloaded a program to check fam speeds from in windows and it tells me temps too. Not sure what the original fan speeds were though nor which is for the one on the cpu and which is for the one I bought myself and put on the case... any clue which is which with the following info or how vital it is I replace one/both and/or do something else?

    OS - Windows XP Pro
CPU - AMD Athlon XP 2200+ 1.81 ghz
    Ram - 1 gig

Cpu usage keeps hovering round 3-10% only.
    Fan 1 - 4327rpm
    Fan 2 - 2813 rpm
    Temp 1 47c
    temp 2 - -55c
temp 3 - -55c [this and temp 2 don't fluctuate so thinking they just don't work for showing anything on my system]
    local temp - 57c
    remote temp - 52c
    hd0 - 55c
    hd1 - 59c

    vcore1 - 1.70v
    vcore2 - 1.33v
    +3.3v - 3.3v
    +5v - 4.89v
    +12v - 13.06v
    -12v - -5.61v
    -5v - -3.25v
    +5v - 4.87v
    vbat - 0.00v

I am turning the comp off whilst not using it now of course, not dumb after all but should i be running out on tues and buying a new fan? I'm 99% certain it's one or both fans, though a hard drive can make noise... constant noise with that little cpu usage?

    comments? thoughts?

OK, I tried to mess with my settings to no avail.

The main problem is skipping when I try to play MP3s...the music is popping and such.

The next problem is the vocal, the main vocals are muffled/missing. It is as if they are not there.

I tried to set my settings to default, to no avail, as I have stated.

    Any solution?

  19. Stuff just...disappeared...

    Date: 07/30/05     Keywords: virus

I had posted something in '[info]'computersupport but no one could really help me. This x-posted to '[info]'computerhelp. This happened about a week ago and I just cut and pasted the following from the old entry.

    "OS is Windows XP.

Turned on my computer moments ago to discover that everything (i.e. music files, the entire "my pictures" folder, avatars, IE and Mozilla bookmarks, documents, other folders in my user account...thingy) is GONE. Only my user account was affected (other people use this computer). Did a few searches, looked in the recycling bin in the hopes something would turn up. Nothing. I'm running Norton right now, hoping it'll catch something. Sound like a virus anyone's heard of?

Yesterday afternoon all my IE bookmarks disappeared, and I thought it was something stupid on my part. Mozilla ones were still intact. Possibly related to this problem.

The only thing I can think of was I caught something while downloading something, and I'm hoping that (a) I'm wrong and (b) this is reversable. Is it even possible to attach a virus/other nasty to an .mp3/other audio files without changing the type of file it is?

Oh, and it should be added, incase it's help to anyone and somehow involved in this, that in the place of all my bookmarks in IE is something I did not have there before calling itself "VDM22.tmp". How it got there, I haven't the foggiest."

A friend of mine said he didn't know of anything that could entirely erase these folders off the compy and that perhaps they are hidden somewhere. I did a search for some of the stuff, nothing. Under another name? Gone forever? Anyone else seen anything like this before?
