1. Overlapping text in Firefox 2.0.x

    Date: 07/01/07     Keywords: html, web

Recently I have notices a rather annoying "feature" of Firefox 2. When going to certain websites the text that is around a link or title is overlapping and rendered quite unreadable. For example, when I go to Wikipedia normally I see this but when I log into my profile, which is using the "Nostalgia" skin, I see this. If memory serves me, I remember something similar to this happening in the earlier versions of Firefox that I had used (ver 1.0.x), but that was a problem with tables if I remember right, not with links/titles. I have found some information about this here, which appears to be similar, but that problem appears to be with displaying things in tables. This does not happen when I log into IE7. This only happens on certain pages, which taking the Wikipedia example, makes me think it is with some sort of html coding (though I'm not sure as to what plus if it is improper coding, Wikipedia seems to be a rather popular page to have bad coding). If anyone has any suggestions/fixes, I'll be happy to hear it. I almost forgot as well, some pages have text that you can't display because it is off the end of the page. Even making the screen bigger of maximizing doesn't help.

Oh yes, i'm running Firefox 2.0.4 now, which I just upgraded from 2.0.2. After the upgrade it did the same thing. I also tried turning off the "linkification" plug-in, and turning off Greasemonkey. Neither worked.

P.S. This problem also crops up when I view a preview of this entry.

  2. .gif to .jpg?

    Date: 07/01/07     Keywords: google

I've got a bunch of images that I want to convert from .gif to .jpg. (My jigsaw puzzle program doesn't work on .gifs.) Oddly, I don't seem to be able to do this in Photoshop - when I do "save as", it doesn't give me the .jpg option in the drop down menu. Does anyone use a free converter download that they recommend? Google brings up a bunch of them, but I'd like to have a recommendation. TIA.

  3. Help! Computer not turning on!

    Date: 06/30/07     Keywords: no keywords

If anyone can help me... I'd appreciate it.

6 months ago was given a new PSU which has been working like a dream.. until last night.

It started buzzing... and now won't turn on.

    I have no power whatsoever.

Is there any easy test I can do to make sure it is just the PSU which is dead, and not the motherboard?

    Thanks.

  4. 8600GT somewhat underwhelms, 8500GT not worth bothering

    3DMark06 8500GT and 8600GT scores
    http://nvnews.net/reviews/inno3d_8600gt_8500gt/page_2.shtml

My Radeon X1900GT score (non-overclocked, everything stock. 4816 3D Marks, if the link doesn't work)
    http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=2315942

When I saw it, I was surprised. Considering how high 8800 cards scores, the 8600GT scores are pretty horrid. It'd have to overclock to beat out my X1900GT. This is not to mention that my CPU was running slower than the test rig on the review site (2.66GHz versus 3GHz overclock on theirs)

Man. It's like an 8600GT would be a downgrade for me.

Even for the 8600GTS, it looks like I might be able to live without it too since the difference isn't quantum leap:
    http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/msi_geforce_nx8600gts/index.shtml

This leaves the 8800GTS, which costs a whole lot more.

Things just don't look heart-attack exciting from where I am right now.

    I won't even talk about the 8500GT.

  5. HTML newsletter problem

Date: 06/26/07     Keywords: html, web, google

This is driving me nuts, and I hope someone can help me. I've designed an HTML email newsletter. It's not overly image-laden, and all the images are optimized GIFs stored on a server and called by URL. I didn't get fancy with formatting - just used a background color in one of the td's, and some color and font stuff to differentiate between two levels of headlines.

The problem is, it's still 159K when it hits the inbox, and I can't understand why it's so large. I've streamlined as much as I know how. Now, here's the really weird part, I think. There's a newsletter I subscribe to that has a fairly similar design, but with a ton of images... and it regularly hits only about 40K in my inbox. So, as a test, I copied the source code from the latest edition of that newsletter, put it into a file on my computer, and sent the newsletter to myself. It showed up at 679K!

So apparently, there's some kind of compression happening somewhere when they send it out (or else Outlook Express is fattening when used as the sender).

What the heck am I missing here?

ETA: I have done exhaustive Google searches trying to find the answer to this question and have pored over every email newsletter design site I can find. All my efforts have come to naught.

  9. Opera Mini Beta 4

Date: 06/23/07     Keywords: cms, browser, web, ebay

I am writing this from Opera Mini beta 4, and so far so good! There are a few things that can be worked on, I would love to see the feeds on here (and podcasting would be a dream) but the load time and render time are both faster, as well as the virtual mouse and zoomout providing a better overall web experience.

Already, with version 3, I could do eBay, my banking, and administer my cms, but now it seems to do even better. It seems to render margins in webpages now, and has visual effects on a BB, but no skinning on the beta makes my eyes hurt from too much light! I am glad that I can have my 3.1.7 (don't ask me how I got that version when only 3.1.2 is available for dl, even I am not sure...) alongside the beta 4, so no real loss having it, and I can get the best of both. For any wondering if they should try the beta, I say go for it:

    For the beta:
    http://mini.opera.com/beta

    For the stable:
    http://mini.opera.com/

Go to it on your phone, nextels need a data cable to grab it, if you have a tmo unlimited data, especially with a blackberry, it is invaluable. As for tech savvyness, what can be better than a real browser on your phone?

Of course, it cannot be used with verizon last I looked, but who would want to?

And last, to mention the price: free as in beer, from the fine people wo brought you Opera Browser!

  11. NTFS Corrupted, Free Recovery Software?

    Date: 06/21/07     Keywords: software, html

    Hey everyone,

Here's what happened. I was getting ready to make an image of my (XP Pro) workstation with Novell's Zenworks 7 in order to re-partition my hard drive so I can install and play with Vista in a dual-boot environment, without actually having to count on vista as my main OS.

I have two 80gb SATA drives (not running RAID, IDE Emulation) in my workstation, I Copied all my personal information to the second hard drive, then pushed an image of the workstation up to the network (no need to sysprep if it's coming back down on the same workstation), re-partitioned my main drive into two 40gb partitions, and pulled the image back down on one of them.

The workstation booted up just peachy with XP booting just fine and all my programs in tact, however, the second drive that I had moved all the information to was no longer available. In the disk manager it said the data was 'unallocated' so I made it active (without formatting it) and it is being recognized as a raw partition right now, but keeps asking me to format it when ever I try to access it.

Now here's the question: did some googling and found this http://www.safe-install.com/programs/undelete-ntfs-partition-data.html which after running, will detect the files on the drive, HOWEVER, it is a trial version and I cannot actually restore the files without buying the software. Does anyone know of any Freeware that will allow me to restore NTFS files from a corrupted drive?

  12. oh crap. hard drive..

    Date: 06/21/07     Keywords: linux

Ok, so I'm in XP minding my business. Then boom, I get the nice BSOD. So I reboot, it gets into windows, same thing. I track it to my printer. Unplug it and it's fine. I decide to deal with it later. Then I reboot it into Linux to do some work. I want to go back to Windows so I reboot it again, but this time GRUB freaks out and gives me error 17, unrecognised filetype. I got a live cd for Ubuntu and tried to load it up but that didn't work either. It worked the first time but then all of a sudden I couldn't do anything so I went to restart and now it won't even go into the live cd. it keeps giving me these strange messages; "I/o eror on drive dm-3, logical block 0" and then counts up to 15 or 16 and then starts back at 0 and does this over and over.

The next step was to load up Gnome partition editor and have a look, and two of my partitions (the ntfs one for Windows and the ext3 one) are bad. Gparted suggests that if I am in Windows, to try to run chkdsk.

I am at a total loss here. I tried the recovery cd that came with the computer and it didn't work. I really, really don't want to have to resort to reformatting it either. My question is can anyone recommend somewhere to get chkdsk on a live cd (if that's even possible..) or even just what I should try next? I've been looking for ideas and somewhere to get something else I can burn to a live cd with my wife's computer that would help, but so far nothing.

    Thanks.

  13. Can't remember the name...

    Date: 06/19/07     Keywords: no keywords

I recently saw something posted in a tech blog, and I can't remember the name of it. It's a printer (geared toward the elderly) that hooks up to the home phone and enables people to receive letters, pictures, etc. that another person sends from a regular email address.

My grandmother lives far away and does not own a computer. I'd love to use this system to keep in better contact with her.

Does anyone know the name/company? Thanks!

Anyone know if there is an extension/plugin for Firefox to do macros?

More specifically, I'd like buttons on a toolbar that allow me to have each button spew text. A commonly-used quote, an img-tag that I use all the time, even a stupid lol-cat macro img-tag.

Perhaps I'm missing it, but I can't find such an extension, and I'd have thought someone would have written one by now!

  19. Venice Chronicles

    Date: 06/14/07     Keywords: no keywords

Hey Compuheads (I used to work for CompuSmart... anything turns into 'Compu____ now)

Online there's an interesting Masquerade that's happening. It's called the 'Venice Chronicles'. It takes place in Venice, in no real time frame. There's an entire lore that surrounds the Venice Chronicles as well, and real actors that help guide the story.

It's a Flash based system, that incorporates a AI called Valentina inside. You can use the site to do regular chat, voice chat, and video chat. If you go into the "VIP clubs" you can have up to 5 people Video Chatting. Also it has an ability to do anonymous text messages, and phone calls through a system called JahJa.

Best way to describe it is a SubCulture - Social Network - RPG - with a romantic twist (Venice without a Romantic Twist wouldn't be Venice).

You start by creating a profile within the Masquerade. You can either choose to be yourself, or a complete alter-ego.

In the masquerade you're represented by an image with a mask. They integrated a system where they take your own photo that you upload, and you choose a mask from the site to place upon your photo.

You can change the scale, rotation, and if the mask should be facing the left, right or center. Basically whatever suits the photo of you best.
If you want to be very incognito, there are even full faced masks that cover your entire identity.

You also choose a family. Each family is represented by a sin (in Venice everything is driven by the "Great Sin" or Fortuna). It's kinda like choosing a race in World of Warcraft. Each family that you can choose is one of the "Ruling Families in Venice".
The Giovanni Family is represented by the sin of Pride.
The Casanova Family is represented by the sin of Lust.
The Medici Family is represented by the sin of Greed.
The Vivaldi Family is represented by the sin of Sloth.
The Cortesi Family is represented by the sin of Gluttony.
The Dalle Rosa Family is represented by the sin Envy.
and The Contasntini Family is represented by the sin of Wrath.

Once inside the Masquerade there is so much to do and see. You can update your profile with more images and videos, talk to the entertainers, add your own bit of Venican Lore in the Library, or join on of the VIP clubs where you can video chat with up to 5 different people. The VIP clubs are called Inferno and Paradiso. Inferno leans towards the more Lusty side of sins, and Pardiso focus' more on Romance and issues of the Heart.

But the easiest way to experience the Venice Chronicles is to check it out yourself. VeniceChronicles.com. Hope to see you guys there!

  20. Switching to Ubuntu

    Date: 06/13/07     Keywords: linux

Okay, I think I want to make the switch from WinXP to Ubuntu. I do, however, have some questions that I need to find the answers to before I make the jump.

    1) I'd like to keep one hard drive with Windows installed on it, just in case I need it for something. How exactly does one set up a dual boot to multiple hard drives?

    2) Speaking of hard drives, I've got three of them, all with lots and lots of data on them, all formatted NTFS. I would imagine that Ubuntu won't work with NTFS, is this true? If so, would I be converting them to Fat32? If so, how would I do that without losing a metric ton of stuff in the process?

    3) Programs. Most of the programs I use are available. OpenOffice, Firefox/Thunderbird, UT2004, etc. But a couple aren't. What would a good alternative for MSN Messenger be?

    4) MediaMonkey. This is the (excellent) program I use to manage my music. I've got a paid lifetime license for all future updates, etc. I really enjoy this program, and the community I'm so involved with. The problem is, there are no plans any time soon for a Linux version of MediaMonkey. So... how can I use this program, or can I at all?

    5) Hardware. I know my ATI video card should be fine. Not so sure about, say, my memory card reader, my usb wireless internet dongle thing, other things like that. What do I do about this?

    6) General nervousness. I don't know how to install programs, I don't know the folder structures, I don't know what file types it handles, I don't know almost ANYTHING about Ubuntu, or Linux in general, in specific sorts of ways. Any sort of guide or stuff like that would be awesome.

    Thanks in advance.
