1. Firefox search bar missing

    Date: 06/08/07     Keywords: no keywords

    I'm a little puzzled on this one (obviously). I installed Hyperwords, and then decided that I didn't like the optional search toolbar since it completely replaced the default one I'm used to. I couldn't find any sort of option to revert it, so I uninstalled it. Yeah, that wasn't too bright. Now, no search bar. How the heck do I restore it?

  2. Modem or Router

    Date: 06/08/07     Keywords: no keywords

    I'm having a problem with my wireless internet, whenever i try to download something it stops halfway through, or if i try to play a game like FF11 it d/c's frequently. My only guess is that the wireless is timing out on a regular basis, but it's only noticeable if you're downloading or playing a game that needs a constant connection. I use Verizon Dsl, Westell 6100 modem, Linksys BEF1164 ( i think thats the model). I'm not sure it's the modem or the router thats causing the problem though. When i plug the modem directly to the computer, the internet connection is somewhat slow, but i can download and play videgames without any trouble. I'm not sure if the router is causing the problem, i updated the firmware etc etc, as it was a suggestion in another community, but i'm still d/c.  Has this ever happened to anyone? Is it the router or the modem or something entirely different causing the d/c.

  5. WOL over wireless?

    Date: 06/04/07     Keywords: google

    Hi. Google has always been my friend, except on this issue where it has been no help whatsoever.

    My question:

    Is it possible to perform a wake-on-lan (WOL) call to a machine that is connected to a wireless network?

    Regularly, WOL "magic packet" would be received by a wired network card. Is there a PCI wireless network card that would have power reserved for magic packets when the computer's off, just like a regular non-wireless card?

    If you can't receive WOL over wireless then WOL is only for clunky wired routing.

    Thanks.

  6. Network Connection Problem

    Date: 06/02/07     Keywords: no keywords

    Ok this is a slightly long story. Ok i have two computers, one of them is the host and it is connected to the internet [we shall call this computer 1] the other computer [we shall call this computer 2] used to have a network connection to computer 1 so that it could share files and access the internet. however, a few days ago, computer 2 decided to stuff up so i went and installed windows again [it was my only option]. so now i'm trying to make the network connection between the two computers so that i will have internet access on computer 2. HOWEVER, i cannot make the connection since on the network setup it says "the wizard cannot find the network hardware". But on computer 1 it says it can find the hardware.

    This is very strange, since i have not moved any of the cables,etc. And i've tried removing and then plugging in the cord [im not sure what the technical term is =(] which connects both computers, but it still cannot find it.

    Please help. that computer needs internet .

  8. Large Hard Drive Support

    Date: 05/31/07     Keywords: google

    Alright I come with a problem that may have a fairly simple solution, but I can't figure out what it is.

    Background Info:
    I have an old computer with 1.2ghz AMD Athlon with 512mb RAM running (now) on Windows XP Pro (SP2) and before this it had no hard drive. So I decided that I would use it as a storage computer. I went and bought a ATA100 IDE hard drive with 500GB of storage. Previously this same computer had a 200GB drive that had absolutely no problem and it is now in my newer machine.

    Anyway the install went fine and I had no problems installing XP on it. It recognizes all of my hardware and there were no errors whatsoever.

    The problem comes from the fact that my system recognizes only 127GB of the very large hard drive. I Googled the problem and found that I had to enable the 48 bit LBA support from the operating system and from the BIOS. Okay so I did the first one and there was no problem on that end. Of course it's still not showing the rest of my hard drive still and I'm stumped.

    So my questions are thus:

    How can I find out if my BIOS supports 48 bit LBA? Is there something I need to do to enable it in the BIOS itself?

    If that's not possible on my BIOS, is the next step an ATA controller card? If it is, what am I looking for exactly if I purchase one? Any advice or suggestions on this would be great. Thanks!

  10. More Geek Stuff About Wireless Routers

    Visiting the folks this summer.
    We're traveling with laptop so we don't monopolise

    their broadband service. I'm going to purchase
    a wireless router for them so we can use the laptop.
    I'm looking at a Linksys WRT55AG A+G DualBand from the US.
    Is this overkill? Will it work with Comcast?
    I imagine this works like my home hub although its
    through the cable modem instead of the phone line, eh?

    I need to purchase (note the word need) a new Nintendo DS Lite for my daughter
    as her top screen is cracked. I have the option to buy it here at home, or
    I could order it from the states and pick it up when I'm visiting my folks just
    because the exchange rate is so wonky and it is about half the price.
    The question _is_, can you use a plug adaptor on Nintendo consoles like you do
    mobile phones,laptops,PDAs etc. and they charge properly? I can charge my mobile
    and Palm in the US by just using a plug adaptor. I have a voltage convertor that
    weighs a ton but its more trouble bringing it back here than paying extra for
    a Nintendo in GBP.
    I'm cross posting this to Brit-Americans and Live Journal UK just in case.
    I never did get a sarisfactory answer from the heads at Nintendo.

  13. Router woes

    Date: 05/27/07     Keywords: no keywords

    So I've got this Trendnet TEW-432BRP wireless router. I used it last year when I was living in a dorm, and then left it in a box for the summer and all of this school year. So it's been lying dormant for about a year.

    Anyhow, the need for a wireless network recently returned but it seems the router has developed a problem. I can plug all the connections in (including a hard cable to my PC) and turn it on but I can't connect to it and I do not see the name of the wireless network pop up on my PDA. An IP release/renew times out, but if I restart the computer and check winipconfig, it will say I have an ip address.

    Now, I did change the router's default IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.1 but neither work. I'm thinking I might just remember the new address wrong so I've been guessing at it for a while but I was wondering if there might be a faster way. A program that would somehow search for it, maybe?

    I've tried pushing the reset button, tried holding it, but no luck. I don't even know if pushing the reset button would reset the IP address to default. I don't think it does. And the instruction manual was of little help.

    Can anyone offer some suggestions as to what I should do now?

  15. Do you know PDAs??? Help me choose one!

    Date: 05/21/07     Keywords: no keywords

    I'm in the market for a PDA and want to throw my line out and see what others think.

    What I need it for:

    Work, mostly, during which I'll carry it with me throughout my day; I'm out and about 80% of my work day and need a way to organize my resources for quick reference and to gather information as I collect it, minute by minute, if necessary;
    An important feature I would use quite a bit is handwritten notes, graffiti, so it's important that whatever PDA I end up with be exceptional here;
    I'll also be accessing files (word office) several times a day and checking the calendar several times a day (but, as I understand it, the calendar is pretty basic across the board).

    I need it to be dependable (I don't have time to reboot and I definitely CANNOT afford to lose info if it freezes or dies);
    I need it to be easy to use (my work is very fast paced and I'm getting this PDA to speed things up, not slow me down);
    I need its battery to last 10 hours with moderate use;

    Anything else I'm forgetting?
    Currently, I'm leaning towards the Palm Tungsten E2.

    Thanks for any input or advice.

  16. Shopping for new DVD-RW

    Date: 05/20/07     Keywords: no keywords

    My DVD burner (an NEC 4x dual-layer DVD+/-RW) appears to have crapped out. It's more than two years old, and I tried burning several brand-new Fuji DVD-Rs with InfraBurner, Nero Ultra 7, and CDBurnerXP - every try failed.

    I know that burners are pretty cheap these days - I saw a bunch on Newegg for under $40 shipped.

    Soooo the question is, does anyone have any advice for what brand of burner I should get? I've used Lite-On drives before, and they're too loud to me (although that may be different now). Otherwise, I don't know what brand is better - Sony, Lite-On, NEC, Samsung, LG, etc. I don't need Blu-Ray or HD-DVD or DVD-RAM. I just need to burn the occasional backup DVD, DVD movies, and data and audio CDs.

    Advice is appreciated.

    [edit]
    I tried burning in Ubuntu 7.xx (whatever the latest beta was a few months ago), and K3b told me that the disc was unformatted. I tried a generic DVD-R that I bought at Aldi, and so far it's working.

    Does anyone know anything about Fuji DVD-Rs not working with NEC DL DVD+/-RW drives?

  17. I need this video... geek help?

    Date: 05/20/07     Keywords: html

    Crap. I need a copy of this clip of John McCain on Hannity & Colmes, but for the life of me, I can't decipher FOX's URL passing to get the root FLV. I must presume that Flash caches it somewhere on my hard drive, or that someone smarter than I could get the URL to the FLV suitable for passing to ZamZar (http://www.zamzar.com) for conversion to AVI.

    I'm making a parody, which is why I'm after this video. Can anyone help?

    The URL at Fox for their player is: http://www.foxnews.com/video2/player06.html?051507/051507_debate_mccain&Hannity_Colmes&Interview%3A%20Sen.%20John%20McCain&acc&Politics&-1&News&372&&&exp

    Please note that this blows chunks in my FireFox, and I had to use IE to get it to play in the first place.

    Scouring YouTube shows that nobody has grabbed it and put it there yet.

    If anyone can get me the path to the FLV or even slurp it and get it to me as an AVI, I'd be pleased to give you "Technical Assistance" credit in the video (yeah, I know, that and $2.50 and you can buy a latte, but I would be sincerely appreciative)

  18. eMachines T2882 motherboard upgrade

    Date: 05/19/07     Keywords: no keywords

        Heya computergeeks,
    it's summer break, and I'll soon have a few hundred bucks to spare to fix up my computer so that it'd play games better (yep, that's the only reason). My desktop is a eMachines T2882 desktop, and I'm interested in replacing the motherboard with something that supports AGP or PCIe since my current motherboard only supports PCI cards. (yep, there's no AGP slot!)

        Th ideal situation would be only replacing the motherboard and not have to invest in a new processor and a new case... but I'm not entirely closed to the idea of replacing motherboard and processor and getting a bigger case... or if it's just a wiser thing to do, build a new computer from scratch (the desktop is getting a few years old now).

        In case it is relevant, I've done this stuff to my computer so far:
    memory: 256MB RAM --> 1024MB RAM
    replaced original power supply with 650W ATX power supply
    replaced CD writer with CD&DVD writer
    PCI slot1: Geforce FX 5200
    PCI slot2: wireless network card
    PCI slot3: 5.1 sound card
    PCI slot4: dial up modem (not in use. I should remove it.. someday)
    [that's all the PCI slots!]

    You can watch my computer lag here (heh)
    I have no experience with installing processors onto motherboards..
    Please recommend me a motherboard or a motherboard & processor. Graphics card recommendations are welcome too.

  19. Ajax web apps and pipe dreams

    Date: 05/19/07     Keywords: no keywords

    Remember all those years ago when Larry Ellison from Oracle stated that PCs are going to die (yes, there are plenty of times when the PC's demise has been predicted or outright stated, but I'm talking about the time that Ellison did it) to make way for server-side computing? He pushed the idea that everyone would only own client machines that have pretty much no hard disks or at least no applications installed on them. Applications would be pushed to the clients on-demand.

    Needless to say the "vision" was quite ahead of its time, for a time that perhaps or perhaps would never arrive.

    Well, today I saw something that reminded me of that.

    Could there be a day in which no applications exist on anyone's personal computing apparatus anymore, or was Ellison's pipe dream really PIPE?

  20. Good word template tutorials

    Date: 05/17/07     Keywords: no keywords

    I have a copy of Word 2003 (and Word 2007, but its just a trial version) and I need to set up a template for our appraisal reports. Thing is I know little to nothing about template creation. I don't know if its easier to just go through some sort of template design within word, or if I should start working with VBA stuff instead. I haven't done VBA stuff in a long time, but I'm wondering if any of the following things are possible (or if anyone thinks it CAN be done):

    Prompt the user to say how many photos need to be inserted, and then based on that, create X number of photo slots that are all 3.5 X 5.5 inches big, and then it will automatically put in the photos at that size.

    Allow the user to create a table dynamically based on input information and then fill in certain information based on the particular field.

    Allow the user to EASILY update individual headers and footers based on the page. I don't necessarily mean the "Word" header and footers, but to be able to put text on top of the page in a header format. We currently have a template that has "headers" in it, but the person who created it did it in some weird table format, so images and stuff will basically expand the box that the header is in.

    I know this is an incredibly confusing and f-ed up question, and if it would help, I could post a copy (heavily edited of course) of a document that is in the current format, which I want to modify so that it can be more automated and user friendly. With these reports, basically 75% of the info in them is the same in nearly every report, so the main issue is being able to easily modify select sections of the document. I'm basically doing this for someone who is as computer literate as Al Sharpton is racially tolerant, so I need to give the user good control over select parts of the document. Thanks in advance.
