GeForce 8600 "Worthless"
Date: 05/02/07
Keywords: no keywords
Reasons why GeForce 8600 series is generally just Bad
-8800GTS price levels dropping to high-end 8600 series prices
-8600GT beaten soundly by cards from last generation
-8800 series prices to drop squarely on top of 8600's by the time DX10 games become mainstream, if not before
-Puts a really big n' ugly black smear on the brilliant 6600/7600 heritage
Unless you must have one of those for your burgeoning garage hardware collection, it's not a good idea to buy one.

The above is what I have for my computer now.... I am thinking of getting what my computer guy calls a "core 2". Now, keep in mind that I know NOTHING about the insides of a computer. Is a "core 2" better (faster) than what I have now?

3DMark 2007 to be DX10 only

3DMark 2007 will only run in Windows Vista using a DirectX 10 GFX card

"So there you have it. Unless you're in the cool boys club with a nice GeForce 8x00 or Radeon 2x00, you won't be able to run a pointless number-generating programme with no actual real-world worth. So you might want to cry a little."
Oh darn.
...but given that my computer has trouble even reaching 5000 points in 3DMark 2006 I don't think I'd be itching for a 3DMark 2007 slaughter anytime soon, even if it does run in DX9 (which it doesn't).

Would a new computer be faster?

I live in an area where I can't get DSL, or cable internet. I have a wireless connection at the moment. If I got a BRAND SPANKIN NEW computer with everything I have on this one, would it be noticeably faster?
ETA: This computer is probably about 8-10 years old.

VB.net Setting Up Outlook
Date: 04/25/07
Keywords: no keywords
Ok I know there are easier things to do but with the limitations I'm given by my boss who is the "Network Admin" so to speak I have to do stuff like this as a work-around.
I am setting up an app that can be run to setup intranet settings like home page and proxy. Already have that portion done. The second part is setting up outlook. I need to have it so it will setup an account for the first time automatically with minimal entry. Preferably the user name would be the most I'd like to have to have the user enter. I however can not figure out or find code on the intranet sites. Anyone could help I'd be highly appreciative.

Errrr... I wasn't aware of this. I wasn't given a free copy. What does this "beta scheme" mean, exactly? People who have obtained beta via their MSDN subscriptions, or just any John, Jane, and Joe who signed up via Microsoft's website?

a hypothetical ...

so what if someone were to knowingly set up an open wireless access point and have the traffic through that unit logged to a system to create nice neat logs with hostname, ip address and websites visited, as well as instant messages logged?
Is the person connected to the access point or the person amassing these logs more at fault?
just a hypothetical of course

Nero Woes
Date: 04/23/07
Keywords: software
I have a tech support request.
I purchased an LG DVD burner (the "super multi" drive, unsure of model number) about a year ago and haven't tried to burn a data DVD until recently. CD burning works just fine, but every time I've tried to burn a simple data disc of pictures (two-ish gigs in total), I get a frisbee.
I have the OEM version of Nero that doesn't have a specific data DVD option. I can create a data disc and it will prompt me to burn to DVD instead of CD since the amount of data exceeds 700MB. I've got the software set to auto-detect both disc speed and drive speed, to do a simulation before burn, and to verify all data after burning is complete. The greatest success I've had was getting all the pictures supposedly burned to the disc only to find out that each file was a band about 45 pixels tall of actual image at the top of the file and a blank grey field below that. Obviously, the whole file isn't being written to the disc but Nero thinks that it is.
My question is this: Is this a fault in the freebie version of Nero that came with my burner, or a fault in the burner itself? I've heard lots of good things about this drive and it came highly reccommended when I bought it, but illness prevented me from testing it out until recently and I hope I haven't been sitting on a lemon this whole time.

Quick Question...
Date: 04/22/07
Keywords: no keywords
In a freak accident a couple days ago, the "B" and "N" keys of my computer popped off. The "N" was easily fixed -- I just popped it back into place. The "B" however... It won't pop back into place. I've tried. I think a couple of the little latchy-didders came off.
So... Should I take my laptop into someone to have the key put back in, or would it be safe to glue it or something sketchy and cheap like that? My computer is a HP Pavilion, by the way.
Thanks, in advance.

...I'm going to ask anyhow.
I'm thinking about getting a new wireless mouse to replace my archaic Logitech MX700. I also have the cordless Elite keyboard - I bought them as the duo/set.
I LOVE my keyboard and have no interest in upgrading to a newer one; I don't like the buttons on the new ones compared to mine. If I get a new wireless mouse, can I sync the keyboard with the new mouse's RF station, or am I stuck buying a whole new set to get a new mouse?

i did that dumb thing of trying to flash a firmware to a wireless router via wireless connection, which manual said not to attempt. and to a great surprise i kinda killed it.
it still works as a router, but wireless doesn't work, and i can't access the set-up/admin page anymore.
anyone knows of any methods on flashing the firmware without access to the admin page?

windows version on crashed hdd
Date: 04/17/07
Keywords: no keywords
How can I tell what version of Windows is installed on a hard drive that will no longer boot, but I can read the files.
i.e. Is there a file I can read that might indicate whether the version of Windows XP on the drive is Home OEM, Home Upgrade, Retail, etc. etc.?
I work for a computer company and we are often reloading systems that customers bring in without an XP sticker on the box, leading me to believe they are some form of retail. We call them and they can sometimes provide us with a key, but dont know what version it is.
I know M$ would like us to sell a new copy in this instance, but if there is an easy way to search a non-booting hard drive for the version it would save us lots of time.

OE annoyance
Date: 04/13/07
Keywords: no keywords
After the client has opened a certain number of times Outlook Express will try and compress all stored email every time the client is closed, selecting cancel can bypass it but it will ask again until it's actually done - which is time consuming and generally grinds the PC in question to halt thereafter. Does anyone know of any way to override the compress option so that OE will never ask?
I'm well aware that Outlook Express is, in fact, evil. However for one machine I use it's the only option available.

Multiple DHCP
Date: 04/13/07
Keywords: web
I have a question.
My DSL provider says that I can set up 5 DHCP connections. Now, why would anyone want to set up 5 different connections to the same phone line? It's not like I could use it to download faster or something, so what do people use multiple DHCPs / IPs for? Maybe webserver? Firewall box? Extra addresses just in case they get banned from a site for sucking it down too quickly? What?
Okay so that was more than "a" question.

Secure email

I've been using Gmail for a while now. I know a lot of people are less than thrilled with their security. My email is slowly becoming a life line and more and more important information is going through my email so I figure this is the time to do some serious looking. My question is 2 fold.
1. What are some opinions on the security of Gmail and should I consider jumping?
2. If I should jump, where should I look to jump into? Pay for email? How much and where?
I tried doing some quick research on secure pay e-mail sites but didn't come up with a whole lot, so I thought I would look for suggestions and opinions.
Thanks.
While I'm at it, why not ask 2?
How good is AVG Free and is it worth paying to upgrade to something else? And if upgrading is suggest, what should I upgrade to? Whether it be just AV, an internet suite, spyware, etc. I've been looking pretty hard at Kaspersky, but I don't know..
I'm a safe browser and I don't run in to many, if any problems.
Just not sure how good a free AV can be, y'know?
Thanks..
