  2. Weird Firefox javascript issues

    Date: 04/12/07     Keywords: java

Sometime last week out of nowhere (isn't that always how it is?), I noticed that there was some funky stuff going on whenever I try to open a hotlink that's encoded in javascript. Whenever I click the link, a popup error will show up saying: TypeError: url has no properties, and then I click ok and the new window will pop-up as it's supposed to. When I click to close the window, it gives me a wonderfully different error: Refrence Error: FirefoxInstance_closing is not defined.. Now, when I try to execute bookmarks from my bookmarks toolbar folder that involve javascript (like, Tiny URL, etc), they will open fine without an error message. Everything does work as it's supposed to... but just with that annoying error message each time. I'm a bit perplexed..

  5. Ad Noise!

    Date: 04/07/07     Keywords: no keywords

I apologize if this issue has already been addressed, but I couldn't seem to find anything right away.

Noises from Internet Ads have been really pissing me off, especially on on text-based game I play (Kings of Chaos), where there's this ad in which you're supposed to ZAP a fly to win something. Anyways, this fly makes the most obnoxiously loud and nervewracking buzz I've ever heard, and I don't know how to prevent the noise from playing on my computer without muting all noise entirely. I'd like to be able to listen to music while surfing the internet, free from ad noise, but this doesn't seem to be possible.

Is anyone aware of a way I can isolate noise made by anything within Internet Explorer and mute it without muting my iTunes?

  6. Code 42

    Date: 04/06/07     Keywords: no keywords

My computer is stuck in a horrible loop. It starts to start up, then the screen that asks you if you want to start in:
    Safe Mode
    Safe Mode with networking
    (a third option)

If a power failure or some such event caused the computer to shut down, start Windows normally.

I first tried starting the computer normally, because I manually shut the computer down. It didn't work, and looped back to that screen. I tried Safe Mode with networking. Didn't work. I tried Safe Mode. Didn't work. And now I can't use my keyboard.

Now, before I shut the computer down, I was defragging, and instead of telling the defrag to stop, then closing it, I just clicked on the X. It was only in the anazlying stage (5% through). I had decided to defrag over night, when I didn't need to use the computer (it was taking forever, and quite fragmented). Could this had caused the problem? No other program was running at the time.

Is there a way to resolve this without reinstalling Windows? I just transferred a bunch of photos over to it from my lappy, so I could burn them on to DVDs (my lappy can only do CDs). Luckily it won't be the end of the world if I don't save the photos, but I'd like to try.

  7. Dirty Computer

    Date: 04/04/07     Keywords: no keywords

I just called my computer repair people and asked what could be the causes of it loading slowly when I click on an application. He said it could be that it just needs to be cleaned. Does this sound like a reasonable answer, or do you think I am getting hood-winked into paying money if I take it in for no reason?

ETA: I don't know that I have ever cleaned it myself, or had it cleaned by someone ever since I have had it.

  8. UPS load/runtime calculations

    Date: 04/03/07     Keywords: no keywords

Hi all. based on my current googling, I have determined that to correctly calculate how long a UPS rated for a certain number of VA at a given load will run, it's (UPS-VA / VA_LOAD) *
multiplier * full-load-runtime. Does anyone know what the reason (s) are for using a multiplier of 1.3 if the load ratio is less than 3 (but greater than 1.3), and 1.5 if greater than 3? I
have been digging for an answer; however, haven't found one as of yet. Thanks.

the script itself seems kind of complicated and i'm trying to get it to only output the current condition's image code (i.e. 31.gif, 32.gif)

i've tried hacking at it myself but when i do the script itself doesn't seem to update. this mornign when i went to check it still had the nighttime/moon image on my server.

would anybody mind taking a look at the code? any ideas?

is there a better way to be able to get my weather updates and output the image in the standard format that most docks us as well? (1.gif 2.gif 3.gif etc)

I installed a program called Registry Booster and it found that I had over 1,000 registry errors on my computer. I cleaned them all, and now my computer runs a lot faster than what it did before. I am pretty computer illiterate, so I had no idea about it. Do registry errors cause computer slowdowns?

  15. RSS feed into personal LJ?

    Date: 03/29/07     Keywords: rss

Does anyone know of a solution whereby I can have an RSS feed of another blog I write automatically feed into my personal LJ?

I know how to create a syndicated LJ account, but what I'd really like is to have all posts on this other blog come into my personal LJ via the RSS feed. Even better would be if I could also have the import set a tag and/or apply a custom filter, but that might be asking too much.

I'm prepared to run an external tool to have this happen, if necessary.

    Anyone clueful?

EDIT: Yes, I know there are solutions for Wordpress. I am not running Wordpress. I'm running a custom blog system that exports as RSS 2.0 - I'd like something exactly like the Wordpress solutions that uses, instead, RSS as the input. I'll end up writing it myself if I have to, but if I want it, I suspect someone else has wanted it, too, and might have already done it.

  16. Fax software recommendation

    Date: 03/28/07     Keywords: software

Ok, for some reason Fax Services under XP will not install for me no matter what I try. Strangely enough the Internet has been most decidedly unhelpful in the matter (on the order of "Oh, just uninstall it and reinstall it" but it's never been installed and it won't install for the first time).

So I'm looking for recommendations for fax software to run under XP. I want to be able to replicate what MS Fax Service would have done which was mainly to receive a fax manually (or automatically sometimes, but manually is important since I share a line with someone else) or be able to send a fax from any program using the print function just like MSFS.

Or, if you happen to have a suggestion for fixing MSFS, that would be great, too. In that case, the service error logs read "Error=2 Update Service". When I attempt to add MSFS through the Add/Remove programs panel, It appears to add the Fax printer device and then suddenly removes it. The fax modem works just fine, I'm able to talk to it via Hyperterm. I've also tried deleting all the MSFS related files to reinstall but something keeps restoring them and I haven't figured out what.

Anyway, suggestions either way would be appreciated, thanks.
