Date: 05/19/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: css, html, ebay

I've never had the need to develop many HTML emails, though lately they seem to the magic cure for all business ills at my full-time job.
I can complete them and they turn out OK using tables and making sure the images are absolutely referenced on a server.
How are these typically done by Amazon, ebay, Crate & Barrel, etc? Is it just down and dirty basic coding. Most of the sites I design utilize CSS layouts and styling extensively so whenever I do one of these emails I feel like I'm stepping back a bit.

  15. Lawn mower vs. Ford Tempo

Date: 09/09/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: ebay

Thanks for the advice that some of you gave me on my graphics card upgrade. I'm actually doing this out of amusement (people do worse things out of boredom than this- like bungee jumping a VW from a bridge), a "haha look at what I'm doing to my old computer" sort of thing. I installed ATI HDTV Wonder to the 1.8GHz P4, with some "interesting" results. It did one of those putt-putt jobs where the HDTV picture slows down and speeds up. After I slapped in more RAM to 1GB, the putt-putting got much better. It might even go away completely after I put in the Geforce 6800 that I just got from Fleabay eBay. It was going on a GeForce4 Ti4200 so constipation was a problem.

(I'm not rich. I didn't spend that much on the used 6800.)

Assuming that the card would arrive by UPS unmolested and in such great working condition (one should never assume these things, but I'm just making conversation) that it actually allows for pipe unlock, the 3DMark 03/05 shootout to determine which machine is slower than the other is going to look like this:

Machine 1: "Supercharged Lawnmower with NOS"

    HP Vectra VL420
    P4 Willamette 1.8GHz
    1GB RAM
eVGA Nvidia GeForce 6800 AGP 128mb, unlocked to 16 pipes / 6 vertex procs
    vanilla PATA 7400RPM Hard Disk

    Machine 2: "Ford Tempo"

    Dell Inspiron 9100
    P4 Prescott 3.0GHz HT
    512MB RAM
God-knows-what-brand ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 PCIe (roughly equates to desktop 9600 at most)
    wimpy notebook 5200RPM Hard Disk

It would be hilarious if the lawnmower loses... The drag race to the slowest and ends up being faster, that is. I don't think so, however.

  16. stoooobid Paypal, STOOOOOBID EBAY

Date: 09/11/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: ebay

I will now proceed to rant about the eBay auction I supposedly have won.

I logged into my email and found that my Paypal payment has been rejected.

    What in the world.

But anyways, I have just paid for a memory upgrade about oh, a few weeks ago. I'm pretty dern sure that I haven't bought anything that has pushed me over the Paypal limit (at least that's what my Paypal page said- I mean, who knows, green little ALIENS from ANDROMEDA could do all sorts of things without me knowing).

I have sent two messages to the eBay seller. The person is either busy being ticked off by my non-payment or... I don't know, something that is preventing me from getting my hard-won eBay bid (That was the GeForce 6800 card I was talking about). Needless to say that the planetary alignment is definitely off. [edit: I don't know whether the seller is indeed upset. That is just my guess, until I get a reply]

Anyways, as long as my eBay reputation doesn't go down I'm still ahead of the game. Everybody KNOWS that your eBay reputation is more important than your El Jay reputation, which is in turn more important than your real life reputation.

I think the Powers That Be simply took a look at my evil plans for the graphics card (i.e. upgrading a crappy computer and doing Stupid Computer Tricks[TM] with it) and just decided to strike me down. Feh.

But enough with the BS. Here's what I want to type:

    STUPID PAYPAL! STUPID EBAY! GRRRARRRRASGHASDGashfdoasuihfo;n

I am not ready to point fingers at the seller yet. Seriously doubt it's something on that side.

Now I will go and find some places to crosspost this thing. Maybe there are eBay and Paypal communities with lotsa ticked off people ranting in them...

  17. Selsyn C78249 needed

Date: 10/06/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: ebay

I've been volunteering lately at the Computer History Museum, which, if you are anywhere near Mountain View, CA, you should visit. You can play Spacewar on a completely restored PDP-1.  If not, there's great stuff on-line.  I recently encountered the NORDSIECK Differential Analyzer  (scroll down to find it) while helping move masses of historic machines from one location to another.  This draws on Babbage's work and has been restored by Tim, whose amazing Analytical engine and Differential Analyzer made of Meccanos can be seen here. But there's a Selsyn motor, model C78249, with one burned out winding that needs replacement.  Because of museum conservation practices, the existing one can't be rewound (don't ask me, I'm just repeating what I'm told).  So a replacement needs to be found for it to operate properly.

I wish there were a better picture:  it's row upon row of selsyn motors, but the most entertaining part is the bank of lightbulbs hanging down under the top - those are the overload fuses.  If there's a power problem, the lightbulbs blow.  Ah, engineering!

There are other model selsyns, but there are plenty of those around.  Apparently the C78249 is rare or at least hard to find. Searching eBay for about a year has not helped.  I gather these motors showed up in WW2 battleships and were popular with CBers who used them for rotating antennas.  Help us find a motor!  Please check your garage, your neighbor's garage, and the workshop of the weird guy down the street with the aluminum foil hat and see if you can find one.  Call ship dismantlers - whatever you can think of.  Please email me at mopalia at livejournal dot com if you succeed. And thanks for trying.

  18. language problem in XP

Date: 11/02/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: ebay

So I just bought a computer on ebay and want to enable Arabic and Hebrew on it. It has Windows XP (which theoretically comes with tons of languages), but these languages weren’t installed and the computer didn't come with the operating system CD for me to get the necessary files from (I know, I know, it was dumb to buy the machine without the CD). To clarify: I already tried going to “change language and regional options” in the control panel and selecting "Install files for complex and right-to-left languages (Including Thai)", and got a message that I needed to insert the XP CD. I also searched the Windows Update site and didn’t find anything useful (though maybe just didn’t have a good enough idea of what to search for). Given the current situation, any ideas for how can I get the files necessary to enable right-to-left text/Arabic/Hebrew without having to borrow someone else's XP CD? Thanks for your help!

Some people who bid on eBay are deranged.

I just saw someone jacked the price of an old and used processor so high that you can buy a NEW OEM CPU of the same exact spec from a regular shop plus a better CPU cooler, for less.

    What are these people on?

    Hey guys.

I was wondering if any of you guys know a reliable, non-ebay online reseller of Socket A processors (not wholesale please, but if need be, I can manage). I have a couple of scavenged computers sitting in my workshop, and some of them are missing their beloved Athlon XPs.

    Thanks for any advice/direction given.
