  2. One last time..

Date: 02/19/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: ebay

I figured since I bugged y'all twice asking for advice on what I should do regarding a new computer that I should at least throw out there what I ended up with.

Plus it gives me a chance to thank y'all one more time.

I ended up getting a Dell through eBay.  I'm sure Dell will get a few groans, but I'm on a pretty strict budget and it fit that budget, so..

Here are a few of the specs of what I ended up with (and what I was going to order straight from Dell):

    AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+ (AMD Athlon 64 3200+)
2 GB ram (1 GB ram)
160 GB HD (80 GB HD)
Integrated nVidia 6150LE (256 MB nVidia GeForce 7300LE TurboCache)
2 yr warranty (1 yr warranty)
    Both have Vista Premium

So aside from the video card everything is an upgrade, and from what I've been able to gather that should be sufficient enough for what I'm planning to do, anyway.  If worst comes to worst I can look into upgrading it later on, also.

Price wise, the one I ended up getting wound up around $50 - $100 cheaper.

So again, thanks for all your help.

  9. ProStore vs Website Store

Date: 04/17/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: web, ebay

    HI,

I was wondering if anyone here on webdev has had experience with ProStore. A potential client of mine needs to know which option would be better, mostly in terms of "web visibility": Having an e-commerce store built into their pre-existing web site, or creating an Ebay ProStore that would be linked to from their web site.

I tend to think a custom store would look more professional than a ProStore, but what would be the better option in terms of people finding the store when looking for these items (architectural artifacts)? I'm not sure what to tell her and I am looking for advice.

    Thanks, mike ray

  10. Meta Tags, website rankings, etc.

Date: 04/27/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web, spam, google, ebay

    Greetings all!

It's been awhile since I was asked / contracted to work on a website, and as I'm brushing up on my skills I'm wondering if any new techniques had come about for improving website rankings.

I'm well aware of paying for a service to submit them, or the various spamming of your site or hiding hidden keywords on your pages to trick the engines. I know, for example, google has their own proprietary spidering system that is kept under wraps, so no one really knows how to optimize for it.

In the past, I simply had the basic meta keywords and meta description in the header of each page, then manually submitted the main site page to the search engines.

However, I'm finding some newer (larger) sites don't have any meta tags in their header at all!

For example, ebay.com has meta keyword tags, wikipedia.com does not.

I was curious what techniques you used to optimize and boost rankings.

    Thanks all!

  14. Opera Mini Beta 4

Date: 06/23/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: cms, browser, web, ebay

I am writing this from Opera Mini beta 4, and so far so good! There are a few things that can be worked on, I would love to see the feeds on here (and podcasting would be a dream) but the load time and render time are both faster, as well as the virtual mouse and zoomout providing a better overall web experience.

Already, with version 3, I could do eBay, my banking, and administer my cms, but now it seems to do even better. It seems to render margins in webpages now, and has visual effects on a BB, but no skinning on the beta makes my eyes hurt from too much light! I am glad that I can have my 3.1.7 (don't ask me how I got that version when only 3.1.2 is available for dl, even I am not sure...) alongside the beta 4, so no real loss having it, and I can get the best of both. For any wondering if they should try the beta, I say go for it:

    For the beta:

    For the stable:

Go to it on your phone, nextels need a data cable to grab it, if you have a tmo unlimited data, especially with a blackberry, it is invaluable. As for tech savvyness, what can be better than a real browser on your phone?

Of course, it cannot be used with verizon last I looked, but who would want to?

And last, to mention the price: free as in beer, from the fine people wo brought you Opera Browser!

Date: 09/15/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, ebay

I need to update my computer and I was wondering if I could get some suggestions on the best way to do that.

Basically, I just started editing videos on it, and it runs pretty slow during it.

Do I need to get additional RAM, or, what would be best? I don't need it super fast, but I want to give it a boost so that the editing software runs better and stops freezing up.

I don't have a whole lot of money to spend, but I plan to check eBay, etc.

This is what I have right now.

    AMD 64 Athlon Processor 3800+
    2.4GHz+ 448 MB RAM
60 GB free hard drive space

What would you suggest I upgrade to?

    Thanks!
