1. No Gmail

    Date: 08/28/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: security, virus, antivirus, yahoo, google

    I cannot check Gmail. When I try to get to the Gmail.com page, Firefox says "The connection was refused while trying to contact www.google.com . But I can get onto Google just fine, I can't get to Gmail. And I can't log onto Google Talk, either.

    I can get onto LJ just fine. I can get on AIM. I just can't check my Gmail.

    I was online last night and it worked fine, then my sister got online [which is something I say a lot because it's always after she's on that something goes wrong] and she couldn't get to Yahoo Mail because Norton Internet Security launched the Parental Controls and blocked Yahoo, saying "Norton Antivirus blocked the page http://mail.yahoo.com" or something like that. So I went around and reset the accounts to allow Yahoo Mail and it was fine, so I thought. But when I got back on, I couldn't access Gmail. I cleared my cache, cookies, passwords, history, and rebooted. I ran MSCONFIG and set my startup to run all the programs it ran when I bought the computer, because I'd set it yesterday to not run anything it didn't need to. I thought that would make it better, but I didn't notice a change at all. I tried using IE, Mozilla, and Netscape after that. They all said "The connection was refused while trying to contact www.google.com" except for IE which pulled up a "This page could not be displayed" page.

    When I got online this morning, my DSL box said that everything was connected and running, but Firefox would not load anything, AIM would not connect, and Google Talk still wasn't working. I restarted again and tried Firefox again and still no Gmail. LJ is fine, AIM is fine, GTalk is still not working.

    Scratch that, GTalk just started working right now and told me I have 7 emails. I tried to check them through a link GTalk, but it said "The page you requested is invalid."

    I'm completely stumped. I just bought this computer, a Compaq at Circuit City [I don't remember the model, but it was $374 which was all I had enough for] two weeks ago and have had problems with it since I bought it. I have an old eMachines that ran Win95 when I bought it, and even though it was on the fritz all the time, it is running better than this computer is, but it's not connected to the internet, so that might be what's making it go faster.

    Does anyone have any idea what could be blocking me from using Gmail?

    [Edit: It is now working, after trying for an hour. I've always had a problem on this computer with it not starting Gmail when I first connect. Is that a normal problem or is there any way to fix it?]

  5. Monitoring password expirations in NT 4

    Date: 09/01/05 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: google

    This is my first post to this community :)  I tried a quick google search but didn't come up with a lot of information, so I figured I would post here.  Perhaps some of you know or can search more effectively than me:

    There is an NT4 domain that has some password expiration policies set on accounts used for services, not people.  Is there a non-AD way of notifying via email when the user passwords are about to expire, or collect a list of accounts with # of days until their passwords expire?  I found a number of Active Directory examples / scripts, but that's not going to work for NT4.

    Please let me know if you need additional info, and thanks!

  10. Transparent Panel (C#, .net 2.0)

    Date: 09/07/05 (C Sharp)    Keywords: google

    Hi all,

    while trying to organize a transparent panel for one of the controls, faced another problem with Windows Forms Controls - can't make it transparent.

    I found a way around it (thank Google) to ovveride these two:

    protected override void OnPaint(PaintEventArgs e)
    {
    //
    }
    protected override CreateParams CreateParams
    {
    get {
    CreateParams cp = base.CreateParams;
    cp.ExStyle |= 0x20;
    return cp;
    }
    }

    It sort of help, but there are two issues with this:

    there is still a part of the panel that is NOT transparent (over one of the controls) and when the Panel is resized etc, it horribly blinks.

    Is there another way to organize proper transparency for Panel?

  13. Thoughts about Firefox and Aggregation

    Date: 09/09/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: rss, xml, google

    Talk about circular thinking...

    In the ever-burgeoning world of the Internet, the word "aggregation" is of the utmost importance, as everything else basically revolves around it. The provision of the content for it, the networkings by which such is provided to the end user, the needed improvements of the aforementioned: all 3 of those everlasting issues play a key role in the continuing expansion of the Internet, especially when it comes to periodically-updated content, as in news, editorials, and so forth.

    Which is why I'm eyeing the continual developments of "news feeds", particularly of the RSS, Atom, and Podcast type.

    For some odd reason, it seems as if those three formats are only residing within the reserve of bloggers (mostly in the English-speaking world), a few newspapers, a few email groups (provided by Google Groups for its classic Usenet newsgroups....which begs the question: does *anybody* use Usenet or newsgroups anymore?!), and not much else.

    I mean, yes, the Internet public is beginning to switch from the old newsgroups, from which some of today's best and brightest stars in the IT industry claim some of their personal roots, to the idea of viewing posts without having to fill up their own inboxes. Furthermore, the feed formats in question are beginning to expand as well: hopefully, they'll have Photo/Image and Email-List RSS feeds in the very near future, as they also have Media RSS (predominately audio, and most recently video) and so forth.

    Thus, to bring it home, Mozilla Firefox (here here!), in order to keep up with the development and expansion of RSS (which has basically become a synonym for "news feeds"), has to keep on its toes in this wise. What I'm hoping this time around (with Firefox 1.5 beta) is that they (at Mozilla), or some third-party XUL aficionado, will come up with a brand new feed aggregation extension which will be both simplified (unlike WizzRSS), declutsified (unlike InfoRSS), and unlimited in both functionality and feed access (unlike Sage, which is the only one doing much of anything for me at present). Same goes (probably more) for Mozilla Thunderbird and Mozilla Sunbird/Calendar.

    Furthermore, I'm hoping that newsgroups (of the classic news:// protocol) will convert to the .xml (the one responsible for RSS, OPML, Atom, and so forth) format in the future, insothat, again, people will be able to access the latest discussions and postings without filling up their inbox.

    Speaking of which, I just came up with an idea within the midst of this writing:

    Is there some sort of standalone RSS/newsgroup client which can handle feeds of all types?

    Or, furthermore....would it make sense to relegate RSS feeds to the news:// (newsgroup) protocol, since RSS feeds are basically the same exact thing as news feeds?

    Damn, I'm thinking in circles, lol.

    I am using Mozilla 1.7.11 and was wondering if there was a hack, extention, or config that I could do to show more information in the new mail alert. It would be nice if I knew who it was from, what account it was addressed to, subject, and possibly (more importantly) the first line or two of the message.

  15. the css battle wages on...

    Date: 09/11/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, html, google

    I am officially going out of my mind. This might be a little long, sorry folks. I'm just getting way to frustrated with this. When trial and error & google fail...

    I am trying to get a div to position at the bottom of a page. Sounds simple right?

    No matter what I try it's not doing what I want it to do. Simple example I have the bottom margin set to 0px. That should work.. shouldn't it?

    I've tried bottom: 0 (which gets it to the bottom of the browser window, ok in the simple example.. but the Real Page is longer than that, and makes the image float halfway down the page. (on there it is the copyright image I'm trying to get to the bottom.)

    .copyright {
    position: absolute;
    z-index: 2;
    padding: 7px;
    bottom: 0px;
    }

    I've even tried top: 100%, top: auto.. nothing works

    Real Page 2 position: absolute is supposed to make that element work independantly from the other elements on the page. If so why is it plopping down below the rest? ( and no matter where in the html I put it it's working around the other divs)

    .copyright2 {
    position: absolute;
    z-index: 2;
    padding: 7px;
    margin-bottom: 0px;
    }

    This is probably going to be one of those simple "Do this, dummy" kinda answers, but that's okay.

    I have been trying to write a custom error handler (or at least adapt the one used in O'Reilly's PHP and MySQL book) and I'm encountering an issue with the error_log() php function. I'm not sure whether this is a problem in my configuration files or whether the function is being used incorrectly - I haven't altered this part of the code from the book. The code being called is:

    error_log($error, 3, ERROR_FILE);

    And it produces the following error message (file paths removed):

    Warning: error_log(...filepath.../log/php_error_log.log): failed to open stream: Invalid argument in ...filepath.../phpincludes/customHandler.inc on line 89

    If anyone can help me (I've spent hours trawling Google with no luck) it would be much appreciated.

    Life is tough when you can't debug your debugger...
