Web Counters/Trackers
Date: 09/16/05
(Web Development) Keywords: software, virus, web, tracker, google
Hi everyone,
I'm a total newbie, and I have a question about web counters/trackers. Is there any web counter software (particularly something free) that you would recommend? My boss wants something that will track not just individual hits, but individual users (who may or may not have repeat visits), repeat visits, etc. I've done a search on Google and found quite a few free ones, but I want to be sure there isn't a hidden cost to them (pop-ups, viruses, whatever).
Something free is best, but if you know of a company that sells a really good counter/tracker, I'd be happy to hear about that too.
And as a last resort, is it difficult for somebody who knows web design (not me!) to come up with one on their own?
I'm afraid this may be an elementary question; so I apologize in advance if it is, or if it's been discussed before (please provide the link!), or appears in a community FAQ (I couldn't find one -- if it exists, please let me know).

CNET Ranks Firefox in Top Ten Products
Date: 09/16/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: browser, html, web, google
Its nice to know that CNET, a highly-recognized-computer web site, has ranked Firefox among its top ten products for the last ten years. The list was produced as part of CNET's tenth anniversary celebrations. Earlier this year, Firefox made CNET's list of the top ten downloads of the past decade. Products were selected based on the most wide-ranging acceptance.
On Firefox, CNET says: "Sure, Mozilla has been around for many years, but Firefox 1.0 brought the open-source browser into the mainstream. Some never thought Mozilla could make it as anything more than a geek badge of pride. The light, secure, and efficient Firefox is legitimately challenging Internet Explorer's stranglehold on Web browsing."
TOP TEN PRODUCTS
1. iPod (2001)
2. TiVo (1999)
3. Google (1996)
4. Napster (1999)
5. Firefox (2004)
6. PalmPilot (1996)
7. Motorola Startac (1996)
8. Apple iMac (1998)
9. Sony Digital Mavica MVC-HDS (1997)
10. The Sims (2000)

Fair price for second hand hardware
Date: 09/18/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: google, ebay
Hi, I've been looking to sell my Samsung SyncMaster 700p Plus. I've googled around a bit and only found a few prices (presumably second or nth hand) that don't seem to match up. I found prices ranging from a few dollars (ebay) up through around 300 or 400 then right up to 800 (these are USD figure, I'm actually Australian. I can use currency conversion, though - go me!). It doesn't seem to be listed on the Samsung site, but I only checked the USA and Australian archives.
If anyone knows of a place to get a good (free) quote for old hardware, I'd love to know. If this isn't an appropriate place to ask, also let me know. Finally, if anyone is interested in buying then I'm sorry, but I've already got the buyer, I just need a good price - feel free to offer what you think you would be prepared to pay, though.
Thanks in advance

Scattered Questions
Date: 09/18/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: web, google
I have no experience in web design, but, I'd really like to consider getting into it. Where do I go, and what do I do? Sending myself back to college isn't feasible, right now (although a night course or two might be). Also, how is the market for this occupation? Before anyone tells me to Google/Monster it...I already have. The reason I'm asking here is that the answers I've gotten are reeeeally conflicting. I thought I'd ask here, and get some clearer answers from those who know first-hand.
Also, are any of you in IT? MIS? Are these occupations really as dead-end and yesterday's-news as I've heard?
How much calculus must I know to break into any of these areas?
Anyway, if you've read this, thanks for doing so. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

this isn't really php related, but is there any way to search the posts to a specific LJ community? i know you can google with "site:www.livejournal.com" but to search a specific community i think could be handy and could help cut down on repeated posts (such as this, if it is one)

My AVG has a scheduled scan to run at 8am every morning, it did that today and ding'ed to let me know that I had a virus. There was a trojan horse Dropper.Generic.AGX in C:/Program Files/AIM/backup/uninstall.exe
—i deleted the .exe (I can just re-dl AIM again if I need the uninstaller) and just wanted to know if a.) i definately got rid of the infection and b) if anyone knew of what the virus is. ive googled, came up dry, and this is rather odd since I never get virus'. not since the sasser when I installed back in June.
any help is appreciated.
eta; ive noticed notepad.exe is running slow, when that program never does. its too small to run slow. in any case, ive noticed that for two days and figured it'd stop once i stopped downloading a torrent. never did stop lagging. dont know if that has anything to do with it.

Google's New and Improved Firefox Toolbar
Date: 09/29/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: software, google
Annie Sullivan, Google's Software Engineer, has officially announced that after two months in beta, Google has released Firefox Toolbar with a couple of nifty Firefox-only features. One of these is the addition of Google Suggest, which shows useful query suggestions as you type in the Toolbar search box.
Attending the demand of many savvy Firefox users who wanted to be able to reorganize their Toolbar with Firefox’s Customize feature, in latest version of the Toolbar, you can go to the View--> Toolbars--> Customize menu to rearrange icons to your heart's content. You can even move the search box around! These goodies are not yet available for MS Internet Explorer.
Click here for more information about the new Google's Firefox Toolbar.
Note: The software requires Firefox 1.0.x and will not work with Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 (though it is expected that Google will make a version available for the final 1.5 release when it comes out later this year).

Boot sector repair tools?
Date: 09/29/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: linux, google
Google doesn't seem to be being very helpful, though I'm still looking.
The deal is: I have a drive where the boot sector seems to have gone bad. Attempting to access the only partition on the drive with Windows XP leads to the claim that the drive isn't formatted. According to the version of testdisk
provided with Knoppix 3.7, the partition data is intact, but the boot sector does not have the magic number 0xAA55. As far as I can discern from Google, this is a Bad Thing.
My plan right now is to get another drive, create the same sized partition on it, and then dd if=/dev/hdb1 of=/dev/hdd1
, which as far as I can tell should clone the contents of the partition onto the partition on the other drive, where that second drive ought to have a good boot sector (which that dd
wont include).
However, I'm thinking that if I can just dump a new boot sector onto the drive, and use Linux fdisk to put the partition size data back in place, I ought to be able to get away with it without spending a chunk of my afternoon waiting for data to copy.
I suspect there's also a way to do it with testdisk
, but I can't find simple instructions for that program -- yet. I will keep looking, though.
Any suggestions?

Since I have installed the Google-Toolbar (the latest version) Firefox 1.0.7 doesn't show me the Tooltips of graphics (of their ALT-Attributes) anymore. And this is really annoying when I'm browsing through DeviantArt. What could have caused this and what can I do fix this?

search.ini hacks

(Opera Browser) Keywords: browser, web, google
Hey all. I've got a few people in the office using Opera 8 now that it is ad-free, and to further sell the browser (though everyone is understandably impressed) I've made sure to have some cool search.ini tweaks available for them.
Latest one I came up with is for Google Maps. "map" is the key, so to get directions you'd enter (if you knew the addresses, of course):
map 151 Andover Street 01960 to 90 Pleasant Valley St 01844
(From one Borders bookstore to another, heh.)

I also made sure dictionary.com, merriam-webster.com, and wikipedia were available as those are popular places for myself and I think others would find them useful.
I also have some LJ-specific searches. Use LJ * for a livejournal page (such as: lj login.bml or lj poll/create.bml), lju for a user's page (such as: lju erislover), and ljf for a friends page (such as: ljf erislover).
