  7. Prefetching question

Date: 10/08/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: html, web, google

I downloaded an extension called FasterFox (http://fasterfox.mozdev.org/)... I find that it is a nice little tweak utility, however there's one feature they advertise that I'm not sure if it's 'safe' to use.

    Prefetch Links
Dynamic speed increases can be obtained with Firefox's unique prefetching mechanism, which recycles idle bandwidth by silently loading and caching all of the links on the page you are browsing.

My question is - does this only prefetch content marked somehow for prefetching? Or does it just randomly grab any HTML link it sees?

Because if it just grabs every link it sees, it could be extremely dangerous... lots of links are of the type "click on me and something serious happens, like your account is deleted"... or mail gets marked read on a webmail server, etc...

I had used Google Web Accellerator for a brief amount of time, and this kind of prefetching was one of its features.. I had to throw it away due to that kind of problems... webpages would act strange if you just randomly clicked on links... Static pages are okay, but dynamic content it is dangerous to just download every link willy-nilly..

So does this prefetch feature take that into consideration? They talk about it like it's built into FireFox, so I would hope it does have some mechanism to know when prefetching is safe.. the onjly way I can see that working is if webpages marked content safe to prefetch...

Anyone know some details on this?

  8. New Video Card?

Date: 10/08/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: google

I have a NVIDIA GeForce 6200 Video card in my PC. 3200+ AMD Athlon processor, 512 MB SDRAM, 200GB HD.

When I got the card, I told the person at Best Buy that I was looking for an affordable card that I could play Starcraft on. The card handles that OK. But I've started having problems besides that. I found another game I wanted to play, Star Trek Elite Force 2, and was unable to play for more than a few minutes without either a total system freeze or a crash.

And just now, I had a total system crash while using the program Google Earth. Windows XP pointed the finger of blame at the NVIDIA card.

Between wanting these issues to stop and realizing I may actually be into more advanced games than I was before, should I just give in and get a new and better card? I'm pretty sure I have the budget for it but don't want to do it if it's not necessary.

And if I do, should I avoid NVIDIA? In my research on the Elite Force problem, I found one or two that basically said that NVIDIA and Elite Force 2 just don't get along well.

Thanks for all your help! Cross posted about.

  9. Web 2.0 - Next Generation Internet or Hype?

Date: 10/11/05 (Java Web)    Keywords: blogging, web, google

Everyone today is talking about Web 2.0. In the post-dotcom era several concepts were re-defined, old ideas re-emerged with new variations. Does that make it Web 2.0 or is it yet another faux-meme and marketing hype? Let's explore… O'Reilly roughly defines Web 2.0 with the following transformations: Web 1.0   Web 2.0 DoubleClick –> Google AdSense Ofoto –> Flickr Akamai –> BitTorrent mp3.com –> Napster Britannica Online –> Wikipedia personal websites –> blogging evite –> upcoming.org and EVDB domain name [...]

  10. external hard drive - reliability?

Date: 10/11/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: web, google

I'd like to get an external hard drive for my G3 iMac; preferably one with 250-500 GB.

I've searched google, froogle, apple store, and various computer supply websites, and found many suitable options. The only problem is, every drive I've found has gotten really bad customer reviews. Usually, people who just bought the drive rave about it, but anyone who's had it 6 months to 2 years complains that the drive conked out at some point (frequently just after the warranty expired). Even when the company sent a replacement drive, these people still lost all their data.

I've found this same story told for LaCie, Maxtor, a couple of others.

Are any of you willing to stand behind an external hard drive? Any long-term success stories? Do I need to look at more expensive options in order to get reliability?

    Thank you for any help/recommendations.

  13. .flac file help

Date: 10/15/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: google

    Hi everyone,
I just downloaded a bootleg off of BitTorrent, and all of the files have the .flac extension. I have tried to make them play, but to no avail. I Googled this and found that there are several programs that you can somehow "use" on these files, but I don't understand how to use them and what they do, etc. I just want to convert these files so they'll play on my iTunes - is that so wrong? (I have Windows XP, if that matters.)
    Thanks so much.

  15. mod_rewrite

Date: 10/19/05 (Apache)    Keywords: php, database, web, google, apache

Ok, i am a little new to apache, so go easy on me.

I have an database based website that uses id's to call each page e.g http://www.somesite.co.uk/index.php?id=1

now this i all very nice, but i find that url a little long for me, so i would like to be able to make it into something like http://www.somesite.co.uk/1

now i know this would have implications like if i wanted to sent to a folder past the root, like http://www.somesite.co.uk/images/1.jpg so it would have to have exceptions setup to.

now i have been told that this can be done with a mod_rewrite, but i have spend days pouring over documentation, google hits etc and i have yet to manage to do this. is there anyone out there who has a any clue's?

    Thanks for any help

  16. Problem with fopen() and a URL

Date: 10/20/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: xml, google

    Hi
I'm attempting to retrieve Geopoints from Geocoder.us for use with a google maps app. The first point I'm trying to map is 58 West First Street Addieville, IL. The following link retrieves the desired XML results:

http://rpc.geocoder.us/service/rest?address=58 West First Street, Addieville, IL

However, when I plug that URL into the following statement

$gp = fopen ("http://rpc.geocoder.us/service/rest?address=58 West First Street, Addieville, IL", "r")
    ,

Geocoder sends back couldn't find this address! sorry. If the address is maligned any way into a bad address, this is the result it sends. Is there something wrong with this URL that gets lost or changed when fopen tries to open it?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

  17. Please help!

Date: 10/20/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, google

Ok...so here's my problem (and I tried searching google about it but wasn't able to find anything). When I first turn on my computer I can connect to the internet fine. (i use dial-up) But if my computer has been on awhile or if I have already disconnected from an earlier time I just can't connect. It will say dialing and everything and then at the very end where it would be connected a thing pops up that says "This action is not supported." (something like that...tell me if I need to check exactly what it says...i just can't right this second because I'd have to restart.)
Anyways if I restart my computer again I can connect again.

I'm pretty sure that I do have a virus or something on my computer. I do have numerous virus scans, etc. but none of them are picking up anything.

If you can help me in any way or give any ideas of what you think this may be it would be appreciated so much!

    Thank you. =/

    Apparently, I was wrong.

    The instructions are available here:

I thought I'd post this, because there are probably others of you who didn't realize this was possible.

Or, as '[info]'ernestsewell has helpfully pointed out, there's official instructions here:

I guess this is just to remind people that it's possible then ;).. I think I'd tried it before, and couldn't get it to work. The part I missed was the requirement for SSL.

  19. Disable Ctrl Arrow Key

Date: 10/22/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: asp, google

I've got a flash file and I don't want people to be able to hold the control key and press the arrow keys to advance the movie. How can I disable these keys or how can I make it so that the flash player cannot be advanced by the actual player and only by actionscript? Both the control key and the arrow keys are used seperately in the movie, so they can't be completely disabled, only the advancing aspect of it. Nothing good on google. What I could find anyways.

  20. mozilla to firefox...

Date: 10/22/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, asp, google

i've been a mozilla user for a while now. (before that i used netscape. (and of course before that i used ie.))
i thorougly enjoy the tabbed browsing aspect of the browser.

anyway, i'm trying to make the switch over to firefox, because support for mozilla is waning.

besides not having the composer, my main complaint with mozilla is that i cannot figure out how to make it load new links on tabs in the background. i have it set to load links on new tabs in the same window... but it makes the new page over top of what i'm doing. i want it to open a tab in the background.
i'm pretty sure it's not something having to do with the options because i have checked and double checked that, but it is possible i am missing something. if it is there, where is it?
if it isn't something in the options, is it something i can change some other way?

oh, and another complaint is that i can't search google just by entering stuff in the address bar and moving down to the search google option. but i've been trying to train myself to use the google search field instead, but i just don't like it.
is there any way i can set the address bar to do google searches like mozilla does?
