1. Question

Date: 06/26/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web, google

Hey, I have two basic web questions. The first is, how can I have my site refresh everytime someone visits? Whenever I'm working on quick updates or fixing typo's, I want to make sure that they constantly get the latest. Second question, for my site, I use only the meta description which is posted on my dreamweaver template. Thus, on every site, it contains the same description. Googlebot or MSNbot is only crawling on the index.html -- nothing else. What gives?

Here's my site so you can look for yourself.

    Thanks

  2. In Need of Advice!

Date: 06/28/05 (HTML Help)    Keywords: css, html, asp, java

Hi guys, new person to the community.

I’m posting because I need some advice. I have a pretty good grasp of HTML and a book to help me with what I don’t know of CSS, Javascript, etc.

Here’s what I need help in:

This is what I want the main page to look like (it’s defiantly not exact, simply because I threw this together at work with Paint >.<) but I’ve inserted notes on what I’m trying to do.

What would accomplish what I’m trying to achieve? HTML? CSS? Flash? PHP? Frames? (Evil!)

Thanks for the help, and if this is at all unclear, just tell me, I’ll try to translate! ^.^

  3. Keeping news current

Date: 06/30/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: programming, css, html, web

    Hi everyone,

I guess i'll introduce myself. My name is Brent, and I am the webmaster of many websites (mostly political). I started in web page programming when I was about 11 years old, teaching myself basic html coding. It evolved from that into flash programming, css, and many other useful tools that I use today.

I have a question for whomever may be able to provide an answer:

I am developing a web page for the Androscoggin County Republicans. They want me to develop a web page so that users can become more involved with ranks of local, state, and federal government. I have done quite a bit of work on it already, but I am having one problem with the news portion of the site.

I have been instructed to find a way of keeping the web page updated with current news. I have no problem with grabbing a news js file for webmasters, but that would not include local and state news. Therefore, I'm looking to find a way of "grabbing" information off various web pages, and having it display automatically on my page.

Is anyone aware of how I might be able to accomplish this?

    Thanks a lot!

  4. Critique Please :)

    Date: 06/30/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html

I'm doing a site for a client that is going to sell body pillows (aka sex mats, lol). He will eventually sell more sex products as well. The models are those that will pose on the pillows eventually so the photo's will be along the same lines, but they will change.

  5. N-vue

Date: 06/30/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, html, web, linux, microsoft

Has anybody here heard of/used/poked & prodded This?

Finally! A complete Web Authoring System for Linux Desktop users as well as Microsoft Windows and Macintosh users to rival programs like FrontPage and Dreamweaver.

Nvu (pronounced N-view, for a "new view") makes managing a web site a snap. Now anyone can create web pages and manage a website with no technical expertise or knowledge of HTML.

I probably will check it out a little more when I have the chance but I must admit that when I was looking at Their demo css page and IE broke it, wasn't a good sign.

    Any thoughts?

ps. anybody who thinks people with no knowledge or expertise can make & manage a website obviously hasn't seen the crap out there that gets brought to me as a redesign!

  6. webiste price quote

Date: 07/01/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web

hello fellow designers! i would like to hear your opinions on price quoting for website jobs.

i've never really done freelance on websites before, but am about to do a small size "5-10 pages" site. i haven't had the official briefing with my client yet, so i don't have details upon the quality of work the company is looking for. ie: flash, html, other added on components, etc.

in your experience, how would you quote a job of this scale?
by pages? by hours? as a package price? by method (flash or html)? +extra $ on revisions?

any help would be lovely, thanx in advance! :)

  8. Hey! Help Needed..

Date: 07/02/05 (HTML Help)    Keywords: html

    Hello!
First of all I wanted to say that my html skills are far from decent, I'm honestly very surprised I even got this far, but I've run into a wall and I can't figure out how to fix it(!)

I've been making some alterations to my sidebar in my journal '[info]'kanawinkie and they look good except for spacing issues.. for one I'd like the profile area to stay in it's little box at the top (not span through the whole sidebar) and I'd like the "friends" "memories" and "to-do" icons in the profile to be in a line, now above each other.. I'd also like there to be no huge gap between the title bar and the actual tables of the two link-block thingies..

Let me know if you can help me out! I can post the code that I have if that'd help..
    thanks in advance!

  9. Iframe and new window

Date: 07/02/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: html, web

I've started a button exchange for my website and the question has come up as to how do I get the links to open a new window instead of opening in the same one. What the script does is create an iframe based on the user name and then it rotates buttons in the iframe which advertise other sites. I have tried putting the following into the iframe code: src="about:blank" target=_blank target='_blank' target=newwindow target="blank.html"
None of these have done a damn thing. Here is a sample of the code to look at. Any help is appreciated, I need an answer for my user asap :)

  10. dhtml thumbnail scroller vs. show/hide layers

    Date: 07/04/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html

    http://dicksonschneider.com/japan/
This is what I've been working on today. Thanks for the people with the font suggestions!

I am thinking for the thumbnails about a nice dhtml (?) or script for a scroller. Anyone know of anything that would work?

They way I have it set up now is just switching from a layer of four thumbnails to another layer of four.
For some reason, the script I stuck in there isn't working for show/hiding layers when the thumbnail is clicked. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

  11. Quick Question about validating:

Date: 07/04/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, html

I'm still very new to the whole validation thing. I always make sure my sites work in both IE and Firefox, but I'm currently trying expand my horizons and build on the basic knowledge I have of html, css, etc.

Anyway, point being. I'm building a site that has a flash movie in it. From what I've read in order to make it work in IE you need the < object ... > and in order for flash to show up in firefox or netscape it needs to also have < embed ...> Now that's all fine and dandy, but it seems that html 4.01 transitional spits it back at me saying embed is no good.

Is there a way around this? Personally I'd rather the flash actually show up in all browsers than having the page validate *L* but it's a little on the irritating side.

    ---

Edit: On another tangent, I was searching through other flash pages to see if I could find out how they deal with the problem. I went to coolhomepages.com and hit every page in the flash section for the first few pages. Only about 3 of them had a doctype, and out of those none of them validated.

Do people actually worry about validating their pages?

  12. I'm not sure how to post this: Spy Sheriff Problem

Date: 07/04/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: php, browser, html, asp, spyware, microsoft

Hello. I'm not big on computers, only knowing how to do some HTML and how to surf, use some typing programs.

I encountered Spy Sheriff about a day ago and still am having problems.

    Computer: Intell (R) Pentium
    Microsoft Windows 2000
    523,760 KB RAM
    Browser used: Mozilla

On my Admin account, I have this black box with these red letters: SYSTEM STOPPED

White Text: System has been stopped due to a serious malfunction. Spyware activity has been detected.

It is recommeded [sic!] to use spyware removal tool to prevent data loss. Do not use the computer before all spyware removed.

I have on my other account, SM (not real account name), Spybot: S&D. Everytime I try to start up that account, I encounter Symantec Email on the fritz. It shows alot of pop windows open for email.

I have tried to run Spybot: S&D and Regedit to kill all of the Spy Shreiff stuff, but it is like a zombie, it keeps on coming back and won't die!

I only use Hotmail email, so not Microsoft Outlook-esque stuff.

I'll admit that I am not the brightest in the world, and I feel that I would look stupid if the other computer_help community approached my problem. The only reason I sought this community after reading the information page, was that the community mentioned even "someone's monitor being on fire" or "just need help sending email."

My cousin used to pad this computer, it is custom-built with firewalls and such, so much that I felt inhibited, but now I feel like it should be that way, but then again, I am not majoring in computers... =(

{EDIT: On some other LJ community, someone spoke of a porn thing popping up. --I found it...ugg...it installed an icon of some woman, and the text: Free XXX (sighs)

Now I downloaded some Spyware BeGone thing and so far I have 101 infections found.... =(

The symantec thing has stopped something has to be right on the SM account. Still working on solution...

EDIT as of 3:16PM Indiana time: I uninstalled "Spybot: S&D"...but now the SM account won't work...)

    I've been reading stuff:

    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=37&t=37021
    http://forum.tweakxp.com/forum/Topic166292-29-1.aspx

I wonder if I can actually get (the porn site popped up again) coolsearch.biz or something) the Hijack This to work, but isn't it obly for Internet Explorer? (sighs, wants to throw computer out window)

  14. .htpasswd?

Date: 07/06/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: css, html, web

I recently stepped in to take over my company Web site. I have a design background and have been learning HTML and CSS over the past couple of months. So far, everything is working out well.

The problem is that I can't figure out how the previous guy did passwords on the site. He is reluctant to give me information (probably one of the reasons he's not working with us anymore), but does hand out tidbits a la Hannibal Lecter at times. Recently, he explained that in order to pass-protect a directory which has an ever-changing list of unique users (different login/passes), I have to access the .htpasswd file via Telnet and replace it with a tab deliminated .txt file (first portion is login; second portion is pass). Or something. I can write out the exact process if that helps. I don't have Telnet and am barely able to muddle around in Terminal on OS X.

So I have no idea what he's talking about, or where to go to find a tutorial on it. I'm not sure where .htpasswd is stored on the site -- is there a default location? I'm thinking about replacing the existing method via .htaccess (I've read how to do this) but without knowing the existing method, I don't know how much I'll muck things up.

Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing? Any advice or direction at all would be most appreciated! I will be happy to clarify; I know this is probably quite vague.

  16. new

Date: 07/09/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, programming, css, html, web, hosting

hello. i'm new here. kind of new with webdesign as well (been doing it for almost a year just as a hobby; mostly with css and html).

    1. i'm just curious as to how many of you actually have made webdesign/programming your career, and if so, what route did you take in college (certificate, associates, bachelors, etc). i'm a second year community college student, and i'm interested in persuing webdesign as a career, technical side and design side, so i guess im just confused as to what i should do in school to get where i'm wanting to be (job as a webdesigner for a company). any tips, suggestions?

2.also, i'm sure this has been asked a million times before, but in the userinfo, " Affordable & Reliable Webhosts" was left blank. so i'm going to ask you guys for some reccomendations on hosts. ive done godaddy, and 1and1.com before.. and neither have what i want for a low enough price. i'm looking for something that will allow me to have multiple ftp accounts, php, a decent amount of bandwidth, multiple domain hosting, etc. any suggestions?

    3. last but not least, i'm looking into using moveable type as a blog for my website. i would like to achieve something like this. does anyone have any experience with this? is it fairly easy? is there something better i should be using. as you can tell, i'm kind of a beginner, and i would love if you would point me in the right direction if i'm missing out on something better.

any help would be awesome. thanks!

  18. I want YOUR opinons

Date: 07/09/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: html

Well I've finally decided on a gadget. The HP Ipaq hx4705 pda. It has a 4" vga screen, 624mhz cpu, windows mobile 2003 SE (with a wm5 upgrade on the way) and many other great features. Read about it here: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11982_na/11982_na.HTML#Standard%20Features

I decided on this against the Dell Axim X50V because the battery life was terrible. The only drawback with this Ipaq is the "intuitive" touchpad- most reviewers were disgusted buy it. However I prefer touchpads on laptops and this one actually works the same way, cursor and all. Or you can use it as the standard 5 button pad, just without actual buttons (tapping).

Anyways after careful consideration and thought, I feel that this is the best bang for my buck and will keep me up to date for quite a while. Before taking the dive I want your opinions before finalizing my decision.

  20. Content Negotiation in Apache 2

Date: 07/10/05 (Apache)    Keywords: php, html, apache

I've set up content negotiation according to http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/content-negotiation.html (using Options MultiViews in my Directory sections), and it all sort of works. Kind of.

To test things, I've created a file in the root of my server called phpinfo.php. In it, I'm calling PHP's phpinfo() function. If I call the file with its extension, I get the expected results. However, if I call the file without its extension, I get a prompt to download a file of type appliation/x-httpd-php named phpinfo.

Here is the relevant section of /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default (which is a link to /etc/apache2/sites-available/default):

            DocumentRoot /var/www/

                    Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
                    AllowOverride None
                    Order allow,deny
                    allow from all
                    # This directive allows us to have apache2's default start page
                    # in /apache2-default/, but still have / go to the right place
                    RedirectMatch ^/$ /apache2-default/

I have the information for parsing PHP in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf (actually, it was already there; I merely had to uncomment it):
    AddCharset shift_jis .sjis

    AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
    AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

    AddType application/x-tar .tgz
The reasoning behind using MultiViews right now instead of type-maps is because I don't want to have to define type-maps for every single file/resource I'm going to provide. If a type-map doesn't exist for a resource, content negotiation will fall back to MultiViews.

Am I missing something? Obviously, I am. Why am I being prompted to download the file? Why isn't the file being parsed by the server, like I'm telling it to?

NOTE: I had content negotiation working with Apache 1.3. It was only when I upgraded to Apache 2 that it stopped working as expected.
