1. Banner links

    Date: 06/25/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html

A friend of mine wants to add some banners on her site that people can take and put on their own site for linking purposes. She likes the idea of offering the complete HTML so that it's a simple case of copy & paste the HTML.

What's the easiest way of offering this up? I know the solution is painfully easy and obvious and is staring me in the face but i can't see it... :/

  2. Help!

Date: 06/26/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, mysql, css, html, sql, java

Thanks to everyone who responded to my last post here - there really is nothing better than hearing someone talk about something they're enthusiastic about :)

Now I have another question for you. A small company would like me to do some work for them. It's a new feature to their intranet, requiring experienced knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and MySQL - very much a skilled task. I need to come up with a proposal for it, which means I need some idea of what to charge.

I'm going to suggest a fixed amount, and I've worked out how many hours it's likely to take me, but I need some idea of an hourly rate. I don't want to devalue my services, but I don't want to overcharge them either. So my question: for a job requiring those skills, what sort of hourly rate would you charge for something like this?

  3. probably an extraordinarily dumb question

Date: 06/26/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: html

What's the simplest way to do a search and replace across multiple files and multiple directories in order to change a character string unique to each file into a string consistent across all files?

Say I've got a bunch of directories like kittycats, goldfish, puppydogs, etc. I've got a bunch of index.html files in each of these directories, and each of these file has references to other files in the directory. For example, the kittycats one has references like this:

    /home/kittycats/pictures.html

    And the puppydogs one has

    /home/puppydogs/pictures.html

And the same sort of thing applies for the other directories.

What I want to do is search on everything between /home/ and /pictures.html across all the directories and change them all to just:

    /home/snugglywuggly/pictures.html

I'm thinking regular expressions, but I don't know enough about regular expressions to do it properly. Any suggestions/assistance will be greatly appreciated.

  5. Xanga layout...?

Date: 06/29/06 (HTML Help)    Keywords: html

I know next to nothing about HTML. I got a pre-made layout for my Xanga. There are three little modules on the left side that have things in them, and one is supposed to have three scrolling icons. BUT only a sliver of one shows and, needless to say, they don't scroll.

All <>'s have been replaced with ()'s....

    (/td)(/tr)(/table)(br)
    (table border="1" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="4" width="100%" class="module")(tr)(th valign="top" align="center" class="module")(font face=arial) (i)Don't Make Me Laugh(/i)(/a)(/th)(/tr)(tr)(td valign="top" class="module")
    (marquee)
    (img src="http://i4.tinypic.com/10cnr7c.jpg")(img src="http://i4.tinypic.com/10cntwn.gif")(img src="http://i4.tinypic.com/10cnub8.gif")(img src="http://i4.tinypic.com/10cnuo4.png")(img src="http://i4.tinypic.com/10cnv4o.gif")
    (/marquee)

Also, here is a link to the sample page, with the HTML on it. http://www.xanga.com/niblayout91

  6. More blocked windows issues

Date: 06/29/06 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: browser, html, java, security, yahoo, google

Last week I posted about a guy I work for is not getting popup windows on XP IE... we wrote it off for the meantime but I am back trying to figure out why he is not able to open windows via javascript.

One window is opening, but I also noticed while visiting my PM, that the JS to remove the location bars, menus, etc so that its just a simple window seem to fail. He is getting a full blown window.

Anyone have any idea why that would fail? Could it have anything to do with his browser security levels? He also has these toolbars: Google, Yahoo, MSN, LInkedin, Linkman.

[updated] OK - it looks like the two windows that are opening are forms that are submitted via Javascript or that the window is opening via HTML target=... So he's browser is definitely blocking the new window JS. Based on a suggestion from the last post I found this page

Date: 06/30/06 (HTML Help)    Keywords: html

it's probably something really simple, but i can't figure it out for the life of me...

on my lj, there is a box underneath the banner that is white. i want it to be the same color gray as the rest of the background colors (which is #999999). but i can't figure out how to change the background color of that one particular section.

let me know if you need to see the html for the part that controls that general area.

    thanks!!

  8. Internet Explorer textNode events

Date: 07/03/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: html, java

You people have been very helpful so far. The discussions we've had on here brought around more innovative ideas and new challenges (which is good). One of those is:

I am looking for a way to assign a click handler to a document (in Internet Explorer) in such a way that I would be able to distinguish what text node was clicked by the user if a parent element contains more than 1.

    Example:

    text1
    text2
    text3

Keeping in mind that I have no control over HTML (it will be provided by the user), I need to come up with a JavaScript function that will handle a user click. In the case above, Internet Explorer will consider the div to be the source of the click event, so there is no way to find out whether text1 or text3 was clicked.

Is there some IE object/method/function/property that I am not aware of that can perfom such a task? I cannot wrap any text in tags (like span) because I can't touch the HTML.

    Thanks for advice,
    -Daniel

  9. interview with the kid that started firefox

Date: 07/03/06 (Mozilla)    Keywords: software, html, web, spyware, microsoft

    http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/276185_software03.html

Q: Microsoft essentially allowed Internet Explorer to go dormant for several years, until Firefox started coming along and chipping away at its market share. What do you think about that, and what does that say about the state of competition?

Ross: That makes me furious, to be completely honest with you. That, more than anything, is why we really had to start Firefox in the first place.[...]

The truth is I think Microsoft is very directly responsible for spyware and adware and the pop-up ads in general that proliferated across the Web after they abandoned their product [Internet Explorer]. I mean, this is the world's most-used software application ever ... and I just think it's irresponsible for a company to abandon it simply because they can't find a financial incentive to continue development on it.

  10. Using Opera 9 to update my Website

Date: 07/04/06 (HTML Help)    Keywords: browser, html, web

I just tried to update my website using Opera 9 as my default browser. Whenever I try to close out and save all of the updates, I DO NOT get the confirmation notice that I am about to update my site and, consequently, the changes do not "take". Can you not update HTML with Opera as your default browser? Any help appreciated.

instead of making it bold and returns a resourse id

to print a file retaining formatting in this fashion
we are running on red hat linux servers with php 4.3

Alright, I know this community is usually used for customizing lj accounts, so if it doesn't follow the rules this post can be deleted.

I need some site help. At the moment I only know pretty basic html, so I was wondering if anyone could point me to anything that could help me out with things like php, javascripts, and anything else you think would help me out. I know of a few places (like htmlgoodies.com), but I figured the best thing was to ask people who might actually use the site.

    Here's the link:
    quicksketch.rydia.net

I know this really seems like a blatant way to get people to look at my site, but you know you don't have to. Just point me in the right direction for html help, so I won't feel like a complete html-looser.

First of all, please see this post which I made to another community...

Yeah, I got confused with the code which I thought was MySQL problems but it turned out that it's actually PHP problems.

Now, does anyone have any ideas what's wrong with the codes?

Hi, I'm new, and I'm not really sure if this has been asked, or if this is the place to ask it, but here goes. I'm usually pretty decent with HTML, but I have a problem with AOL. 16. Hope there's a solution...

Date: 07/08/06 (HTML Help)    Keywords: html, web

Hi, I hope someone can help me...I assume there's a way to do this in HTML, but I don't know how to even start searching.

I have a website with many html documents. Large numbers of these documents use similar blocks of code, and if I want to update these blocks, I have to go through each document one at a time, a tedious process.

Is there a way in HTML to have the block of code stored once somewhere, and then have in each document a reference to it, so when I want to alter it, I only have to do it once?

  17. how do you do this?

This is more like a question for a website. I'm trying to mimic what the links down the right of this site do- obviously with different images and colours and what not, but for the life of me can't figure it out. Maybe I'm just over looking a simple code- I mean i'm not the best at HTML/XHTML but i know enough to make a simple site. Any help is appreciated, thank you!

  18. Random HTML and Image Script

Date: 07/11/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, html

Does anyone know of a good script that randomly selects a block of HTML (including text and images) from a directory and can be output to another page (i.e., included via PHP and placed in a div on an index page)?

I've already tried a couple from ALA (Random Image Rotation and A Better Image Rotator), but I'm still looking for something a little better.

    Thanks in advance.

  20. css for emails?

Date: 07/12/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, html, web, yahoo

So the new project at work are emailed newsletters, and I basically want them to use the same layout for the website in these emails (so they know it's from us + I don't have to think up a whole new design).

Only issue is that the website uses a fair chunk of css. Since linking to an outside css file is out of the question (mainly because who knows if they read it online or not), I'll have to have all that stuff within the html itself. Only thing I want to make sure is that it's pretty standard for email systems (outlook, mail for osx, gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc) to be able to process that kind of stuff.

    so... this'll be okay, right?
