1. Asp.net controls, rendered with a variable

    Date: 03/09/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: html, web

    This is probably something really stupid and simple I am doing wrong, but it has me stumped.

    in my code behind (c#) I have a variable:

    protected string dateRegex = "blah"; //lengthy regex with this weeks corp standard date expression (actually it is read from the web.config, but I have tried it as static for this example as well)

    now, we have a custom control, that was already in place when I got my hands on, that I don't have access to modify freely at this time... it is a TextBox with a regex validator attached to it. It has a default regex expression, that I want to override... so I am trying it like this:

    my problem is that this renders to html as a literal string, not as a server side variable:
    in the span for the validator control, I see:

    validationexpression="<%= dateRegex %>"
    if I use the databinding syntax instead of the rendering (<%# dateRegex %>) it evals it as null, and uses the default expression I am attempting to override. it works correctly (overrides) if I paste the new expression into the variable on the control, but this defeats the purpose of having the expression in my web.config file so that it could be changed in just a single place (there are between 20 and 60 Date Text Boxes on this screen, depending on the user's permission level).

    Ideas? (other than repairing the object itself so that it handles changes to the expression property correctly)?

  2. argh.. more text box issues

    Date: 03/09/05 (HTML Help)    Keywords: html

    ok, so i updated in here before & figured out how to do the textbox & how to change the font & the color & the bg color. i entered the code into my community's personal info ['[info]'mirage___], & somehow its got screwed up. i assumed i entered it wrong, so i tried it in my PERSONAL journal.& it works completely fine. here is exactly what i entered:

    thats an exerpt from what you'd see in the community info. can somebody please tell me why, no matter how many times i enter the code, erase it, & re-write it, that it never shows up correctly?

    i'll give you this, too:

  3. Thunderbird extensions problem

    Date: 03/10/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: php, html

    A friend of mine tried installing extensions on Thunderbird and told me he couldn't. Naturally, I thought he wasn't following the directions, so I was going to walk him through.

    The directions - on the official extensions site for Thunderbird - say this:

    Extension Install Instructions for Thunderbird Users:
    (1) Right-Click the link above and choose "Save Link As..." to Download and save the file to your hard disk.
    (2) In Mozilla Thunderbird, open the extension manager (Tools Menu/Extensions)
    (3) Click the Install button, and locate/select the file you downloaded and click "OK"

    However, when right clicking as directed, and choosing "Save Link As...", also as directed, it tries to download and save 'install.php.html', and not the extension! What's the proper method, and why the hell do they have instructions that don't work on the official site?

  10. Relevancy and Context in Web Pages with CSS2 and PHP

    Date: 03/12/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, browser, css, html, sql, web

    Hi all. This will be my first post to the community, so before anything I'd just like to say how educational its been reading your posts all this time. Now then, here's my contribution.

    I've recently been playing with what I think is an interesting technique for adding relevancy and context to my pages. Basically, I embed a small, invisible message within the HTML of a page or within the link to that page which is only visible to people who follow special links. This enables me to embed certain so-called "relevancy messages" on the destination page of a link that helps keep visitors oriented when browsing through my site. (This is exceptionally beneficial when back-linking to old blog posts!)

    A much more detailed explanation of what I'm talking about is on my site. A brief explanation of what I first did is this:

    1. When I write links that reference my old pages, I go back to those old pages and insert a named anchor (or tag the element with an id to reference in my link with a fragment identifier).

    2. I add a title to that element so I can hide it within the HTML for visitors who browse normally, but show it to visitors who follow links to that fragment.

    3. I've added a style rule in my pages to display that title text before the fragment only for visitors who follow the special links, specifically, *:target::before { content: attr(title); }

    (See an example in action on my test pages.)

    This means when visitors click on a link to a fragment within a page, they see a clear, short message explaining its relevance. Especially on long pages where my link only references a small part of it, this is an enormous enhancement to usability because it ensures a smooth transition of context between one page and the next. Coupled with helpful title text on the source link itself, it can help create an extremely smooth yet still unobtrusive browsing experience.

    As an extension and major enhancement, I've also been experimenting with "dynamic relevancy messages" as a sort of mini-API to allow anyone to include their own relevancy message into my pages when they link to me. The crux of this technique uses a variable within a GET query-string to plug into the above CSS content-before rule.

    So what do you think about this technique? Useless? Great? Superfluous? All feedback welcome.

    I'd be especially interested to hear from web accessibility gurus who can test the accessibility of this technique and PHP gurus who can help break my site by using XSS attacks for the dynamically generated CSS rule. As I'm somewhat of a novice in that area (that is XSS in the context of CSS, since it's usually an HTML/SQL thing), I'd appreciate it if you can help me fortify my defenses against what is potentially a very obvious attack vector on my site now.

    Thanks for your time. :)

    (Oh yeah, and, um, you gotta use Firefox or another CSS2-compliant browser such as Safari, or a recent version of Netscape, or Mozilla in order for the CSS to work, obviously. It won't work with any version of Internet Explorer or Opera. Sorry.)

    • disallow javascript

    • special tags (standard BBcode - [quote][url][img])

    so, i have achieved the first 3 points, but i was wondering which php functions would you recommend for filtering the comments text?

    plus, is there any way to garantee that the document keeps xhtml compliant?

  14. 3 Tier Web development and Code Generation

    Date: 03/15/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, mysql, html, database, sql, java, web

    This is long so a cut tag...

    So recently I’ve been working on some new stuff. In recent versions of Mozilla (including Firefox) there is now a SOAP client. This means that a web application can access the server at any time, and not just when the page loads. This means a huge amount of flexibility is now available to the developer in a DHTML application. I have been playing with this for several months and realized that a large amount of the code is very repetitive.

    I am working on a application to build these applications. I have a DHTML page which lets you model your application. It pulls table and index definitions from a MySQL database, and then it lets you set up validation rules for each field, set up custom SQL queries (In addition to a number of automatically generated ones), set field labels, and change other things about the data model.

    So far I can auto generate
    * DHTML Forms
    * Javascript glue for the forms
    * Javascript to wrap the soap functions into simple javascript methods.
    * PHP classes to access a mysql database
    * A wrapper to serve the PHP classes up as SOAP.

    Still to do

    * Data validation
    * Unit test frameworks
    * Installer scripts for a generated application

    For more information see my wiki
    I plan to have the code on source forge (project “xulbuilder”) today or tomorrow

    I am having a bit of an issue with my webpage. I have images (in the galleries) that are supposed to pop up in a separate, sized window when clicked. It works perfectly in Firefox but something is obviously missing/wrong as I receive an error in IE and Safari.

    I swiped the popup code from another page and I know very little about javascript so I have not been able to sort it out yet. Here is one of the pages experiencing this issue: p22.html

    I have looked around a bit online and experimented with it but I am still puzzled. I know it must be something obvious but it is apparently over the head of a lowly art-brain person. If you notice any other incredibly stupid mistakes please feel free to point them out.

  18. New AIM virus or whatever

    Date: 03/16/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: html, security, yahoo, google

    T_T I was reading away messages and my brother's was about new pictures or whatever, so him being far away I was interested in seeing them. I believe the link was http:// www.TravisArket. com/photos. pif or at least something similar to it. Whatever you do, don't click on it! I ended up downloading shit onto my computer and now it's infected (at least, more than before). I deleted the files I downloaded earlier, scanned my computer with PestPatrol, Ad-aware, and AVG.. The first two detected some junk and I deleted it, while AVG didn't detect anything. I searched through recently modified files and deleted what I believe was the AIM away message crap. However, even after deleting it I still have the problem (I think). Does anyone know what I'm talking about? This is aggravating. How do I get rid of this?

    Ooh ok, so now it's just randomly but frequently putting up away messages now. It says, "NEW PICS FROM THE BEACH http:// www.TravisArket .com/photos. pif !!!!!" =(

    Also, I've discovered that I now cannot view my processes, memory, and the other stuff alt ctrl del does. Every time I try to open it, it closes after about one or two seconds. I tried searching for more information about this on Yahoo and Google, but apparently my textboxes aren't working. I keep receiving the error message "Your current security settings do not allow you to send HTML forms." I know that I had not recently changed any settings whatsoever.. I do believe that my cookies have now been disabled, or at least on Yahoo, cuz I've just been logged out and cannot log back in due to "disabled cookies." =(

    Edit: New fake URL at the domain of softhue.com, same ending though.

  20. Some Questions...

    Date: 03/17/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, html, web

    Hi everyone. By reading through some posts here the past couple weeks, and some replys to my posts, I now have a few questions for everyone:

    1. Tables: Why should I stop using them? I've always though Tables were the bread & butter of web design. Part of the reason I think this is because I was pretty much taught to think that way when I was in school for my associates degree. I admit, the school was terrible, but anyway... that's what I was taught. I've seen people on here talk about CSS doing everything tables can... or using DIV tags to do it, and so on. I admit, I know nothing about DIV tags, or what they do... and I know very little CSS... only the fun stuff like link styles and scroll bar colors. Any light shed on this question would be helpful.

    2. CSS: Used for the entire website? Just wondering what the benefits are to using CSS for your entire site, instead of HTML.

    3. IFRAMES: Why are they so bad? I use them all the time, they are easy to use, and I like 'em. In a previous post someone replied that search engines can't search into them if they are on your site... so I recognize that problem... but what else is there? I'd like to hear some more downsides and upsides. Another person recommended I use DIV tags to do IFRAMES job. I don't know how to do this. Can anyone link me to a little DIV tutorial?

    Thats all for now I guess. Thanks in advance for replies!
