    This whole Content Management System thing is overwhelming, and I hope I can get some guidance from you folks.

    My new client wants to be able to change the look of the index page monthly. The client does not understand HTML.

    The ISP has the following CMS products available: Drupal, Geeklog, Joomla, Mambo Open Source, PHP-Nuke, phpWCMS, phpWebSite, Post-Nuke, Siteframe, TYPO3, and Xoops. These are all add-ons via Fantastico.

    What I think the client wants (subject to new revelations) is a way to change an image and maybe some text on one page, but they'll probably want to do something similar on other pages, too, eventually.

    Has anyone worked with these products? Any comments good or bad about them?

    Moderator, if this isn't allowed on this forum just let me know.

    I get a lot of emails daily for various web dev and programming positions available. I found a good job, but I keep my resume up. Ya never know.

    Just feel guilty constantly deleting them when I know someone may need them. Figured I'd at least post them for any coder friends that may be looking for something. I lj-cut it so it wouldn't be too obtrusive.

    If these are just found to be crap, let me know and I'll stop passing them on. But some of them at least appear to have potential. They're all fresh over the past 24 hours.

    To whoever is currently looking, hope these help! If it's ok, I'll send periodic digests of these if anyone finds them worthwhile.

    Problem you are having: I think there is an html issue going on. Anytime I try to post a comment in a community, personal journal, read an text only box or use the HTML pad for posting, it is absolutely illegible. Once posted, they read fine, so long as I keep hitting preview to actually see what I am typing.... This problem just started happening last night. I made no changes to my journal codes or to Mozilla. It is NOT happening in IE. Even my overrides box is showing up like this. I did not shrink the text box pictured, nor alter the text. The rest of the text in sidebars and such are fine; it's only in the typing areas of lj. What did I do?

  6. E-newsletter question

    Date: 04/19/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, html

    I'm creating the html code (and linked images) for an email e-newsletter. It contains 15 text links. I want these links to be black type with no underlines. I had thought I could do this using some CSS coding, but I'm not sure I could use that on code being sent via email.

    I've managed to make the text black using color="black" in the font tag. But I haven't been able to remove the blue underline. I'd even be happy just making the underline black.

    Thanks!

    Date: 04/23/07 (Open Source)    Keywords: css, html, technology, web

    Getting output from open source which is fully compliant with web standards like XHTML and CSS is a major challenge. Since the work of assuring such outputs is still hand-made, many projects are weak in this critical area. But shouldn't it be possible to identify the underlying code weaknesses using technology?

Instead of the light purple color I picked from the "System Color Picker," I get some default-looking blue. But only on the borders of pictures that were links, not on text. And not in all browsers. So I remake the page from scratch, thinking maybe it's a glitch, and choose some new colors that look similar. When I load the page, none of the colors come in right. They all look like defaults - text is black, links are blue, v-links are purple.

    Can someone tell me what's going on here?

    Thanks in advance.

  11. I need error correction help

    Date: 04/27/07 (HTML Help)    Keywords: html, web, google

    I checked my site at Weblint Gateway and I can't seem to get rid of the errors without making my page look bad.
    The problem is, I like the way my page looks now, but it won't load quickly until I fix the bugs.
    I don't know how to change the code so that I can keep the current look while omitting the errors.
    Can someone help me?
    The page address is

  12. Link colours

    Date: 04/28/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, html, web

    Good morning everyone!

    I still learning web, and am having a little trouble with my link colours.

    I'm working with a limited palette on my friend's website (initial pages can be seen at http://www.rgbcmyk.ca/pages/pf_imgrtch.html) and am having a little trouble getting the colour designated in my site-wide CSS stylesheet to stick. Each page also has it's own style sheet, for positioning page specific items. (yes, I'm going all out with the CSS - needed to handle some tight image and type placements on some pages that you don't see yet)

    It _should_ be 444444, 666666, 888888 and 000000, but it's reverting back to the default link colours (blue and purple)

    Any clues as to where I should be looking under the hood? Do I need to change anything in my CSS hierachy?

    Any help appreciated

  13. javascript assistance

    Date: 04/30/07 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: browser, html, web

    Hello, I joined because I need a little help with a website I'm working on as a part of an assignment for school.

    All I need to be explained is how to create a pop-up window for a HTML site.
    I'm going to to hyperlink the word "Pictures" on my site so that when they click it, the URL it was linking to doesn't open in the same browser window or a completely new one, but a pop-up that is 400 x 300px appears with the flash content I have premade for it. It should be simple to shut by just clicking the X in the corner.

    I'd be very grateful if anyone could give me the code to copy-paste, and some simple explanation :) thanks!

    Hi everyone!
    I'm new here,  but expect to come back soon enough with real insight and input.  In the meantime, I'm working on a tech report (whoever said going back to college would be easy needs to be shot on sight) and could use your help.

    I've developed a questionnaire for web designers/developers and would love your input.  It will be used for a feasibility report that will analyze and recommend a core set of web languages for training and hiring employees of, say, a small webdesign company.  I am willing to forward to anyone the completed report if requested and am also willing to provide copies of other assignments that have been part of this report.  After all, I look at unsolicited surveys like this with quite a bit of skepticism and usually want some background.

    If you frequent other webdesign forums/communities, please excuse the likelihood of verbatim cross posting, as I am desperately in need of responses (I need quantifiable results within two weeks, yikes!) and don't much have the time to rewrite an introduction six times.

    If you have additional input beyond what I'm asking in the survey, please feel free to give your opinions.  Thanks in advance for your time and help.

  18. CSS problem in Firefox?

    Date: 05/08/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, html

    I'm having an issue with the display of my div boxes, and I'm not sure what the problem is. The weird thing is that I've tested using the exact same browser as the client (Firefox v.2.0.0.3), but we are not seeing the same thing, so I can't even try to recreate the problem at my end.

    I have several divs stacked on top of each other, with a grey border and two columns of text. It should look something like this:

    and it looks fine in both IE and Firefox at my end. However, my client says that, while it looks fine in IE for her, in Firefox, it is looking like this:

    She says that the grey lines are not static. They drag around as she scrolls up and down the page. However, they appear to be contained within the div (ex. they are not moving up to the header area or across the page)

    Here is my CSS (.services is the container, .servicespic is the left column, and .servicesdesc is the right column):
    .services {
    width:90%;
    padding:10px;
    margin-left:30px;
    margin-bottom:20px;
    border:#CCCCCC solid thin;
    overflow:auto;
    }

    .servicespic {
    text-align:center;
    vertical-align:middle;
    }

    .servicesdesc {
    width:60%;
    float:right;
    font:0.9em Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    text-align:left;
    }

    and here is an example of the HTML for the divs:

  19. wow. just wow.

    Date: 05/08/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: css, html, database

        I've run into a bit of a problem at work. I thought I'd share as a good example of what not to do. We generate these e-signature contracts for clients. No biggie right? HA. They get the values and slap em in a bigass table, then they take all that HTML and put it in the database. In case you don't already know, this is a really bad idea. Today they wanted me to change up some of the layout and I said sure and went looking for the css, only to find HTML generated by Frontpage 4.0 stuck in a database table. I can't do anything with it. All they had to do was save the values in the db and print it out in an html page. Sorry if I'm ranting, but I want to stress that this is really stupid and nobody should even consider doing something this way.

  20. free web design software?

    Date: 05/10/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: software, html, web

    Hi, I'd like to design a simple web page for a branch of a nonprofit youth organization. Any suggestions on free software I can download? I've edited simple HTML in the past, but now I was hoping for a WYSIWYG kind of thing. I downloaded FreeSerifSoftware, but I'd like to know what else is out there. Thanks.
