  2. A question ...

    Date: 06/06/05     Keywords: linux

Not sure if this is allowed here, and if not, I apologize - feel free to delete this. I'm new here by the way but I have a question about training ...

My work is allowing me to take some classes, and my VP has shown me a book from CompuMaster also known as SkillPath. My question, have any of you ever taken classes through this company? If so, how were the classes? I'm looking at taking a Linux course through this company. At $995/class for two days, the topics are interesting (some will be new, some I know) but I'd like to have a more formal class rather than learn as you go ...

If this is a waste of my time, could you all recommend any training companies? Thanks in advance.

  4. laptop and SQL questions

Date: 05/18/05     Keywords: programming, software, database, sql, web

    Howdy all,

After 6 years in the trenches of application and network support I am calling it quits and returning to academia in social science. That is not to say that my IT days are entirely behind me. My area of research is going to be heavily reliant on Geographical Information systems and database design and analysis...

so I have a few questions for the group

    1. (this one is an easy one probably).. I am looking to purchase a laptop in the next few weeks. I am torn between going with a tablet (the toshiba, I have seen far to many problems with some of the others , especially the acer) and a cheaper basic laptop. Essentially I am not all that concerned with performance if I go cheap. The first couple of years it just needs to run word processing, statistical analysis software, GIS software (on a low level) and that sort of thing. If I go cheap I would buy another one when i started the dissertation.. The question is on the reliability of the toshiba tablet.. have any of you used it extensively, or deployed them? I just want to be sure it is gonna hold up if I am gonna spend a nice chunk o change on it.. if the view is negative, whose laptops do you like? No way in hell I am getting a sony, but is there anyone else i should avoid like the plague?

    2. For the SQL folks out there. It looks like the department uses MS SQL(I will have to stick with it for awhile because all the GIS programming courses are VB and i really won't have time to learn a real programming language). My question is, when I go to build my own SQL box what sort of spec should i be looking at? My databases will be the platform for my GIS mapping, and will be essentially legal databases with a relatively small amount of data (case name and number, disposition, appellate action, votes on appellate action and brief case summaries) Eventually it will all be set up with a read only web interface for sharing the data. How beefy am I going to need to go. I know MS SQL is a resource beast, so I probably can't get away with having it on a machine that does much else, but I am going to be on a grad student budget, so unless I get some major funding I will need to stay reasonably cheap

    Input greatly appreciated!

  5. Getting the latest Bluetooth for iPaq

    Date: 05/13/05     Keywords: no keywords

This entry is for everyone with a iPaq h5400 series.

If you have been wanting the latest Bluetooth Stack Support (1.6) but HP dont have it available for download there is something you can do. i found that the High Quality Audio update for the h5600 or something like that works perfectly on the h5400 (even enabling headset profile and audio profiles). No hacks are required and the intaller doesnt even check the iPaq model number. Just download and install.
Audio quality is slightly better then under the 1.4 drivers but still not that great (probably due to my crappy headset).

    Download link here.

It is meant for the h5500 series h5555 but works fine.

  6. Outlook 2000 and XP SP 2 Intranet Prompting

    Date: 05/11/05     Keywords: security, web

I have an Exchange 5.5 (Yes! We are upgrading within days) and Outlook 2000 environment at work.

Recently a few users including myself upgraded to XP Sp2. Suddenly, we are being prompted for a domain login/pass when we open emails that contain images on the intranet webserver. Prior, it automatically authenticated. IE does not currently prompt (for most people). I made sure the Intranet server was added to the Intranet Sites in the IE Security tab.

I've looked all around the web but can't even find anyone else that has this problem. Any of you have any insight?

  7. Backup Solutions

    Date: 05/10/05     Keywords: software

... what backup solutions do you implement at your workplace?

    Enterprise level stuff?

    Arcserve?
    Veritas?
    Netvault?
    Tivoli?
    CommVault?

What environment / how many servers do you have / backup - do you have a backup to hard drive option (Before offlining to tape)

And more to the point... Does it work / do you like it?

I've got (yet another) project - Implementing a Backup Solution for here...

I've got a budget, and just need to wonder about software now...
I'm thinking either Netvault of Veritas at the moment... (already knocked Tapeware out of the selection).

Or anyone seen any reviews on enterprise level backup solutions anywhere recently? (For an entirely Windows Server environment!)

    Date: 05/06/05     Keywords: web

my small company IT department is meeting with the MS exchange/sharepoint folks to implement.

we will be using a lot of the web based client

how accessible is the web based client in other browswers besides IE? is it still relatively functionable? does it take away from the experience by using firefox or netscape?

    any help would be appreciated.

  10. Conferences - where are you going?

    Date: 05/02/05     Keywords: linux

For those of us lucky enough to get company paid vacation^W^W^Weducation trip budgets, where are you planning on going in 2005?

Our company President just re-initiated conference budgets, but unfortunately he did it AFTER two of the ones I wanted to go to (Novell BrainShare and LinuxWorld/Boston) had already passed. I wouldn't mind LinuxWorld/SF or even MacWorld/SF.. but..

    So where are you going?

  11. SSL VPNs

    Date: 04/29/05     Keywords: html, web

    Any thoughts/experiences with SSL VPNs?

We have maybe max 25 users right now, but if it works well, we can envision up to maybe 100 users simultaneous (including customers).

    Recommendations or warnings?

We're a large-item, small-quantity-output manufacturing outfit, users are mostly salesmen, and customers.

Common needs inside web would be intranet websites, outlook, maybe some files, and optimally a seperate 'area/portal' for employees and customers.

    Thanks...

  14. rebates on preinstalled windows?

    Date: 04/24/05     Keywords: google

I seem to remember a mechanism in which you can get the cost of windows rebated from a system that came preinstalled with windows if you are using an alternate OS or prefer to use your preexisting liscensed stand alone copy of windows.. I think this was part of one of the anti trust settlements.. I just can't seem to find info on it... I am digging through google, but that may take a bit.. anyone remember the process on this?

    Date: 03/28/05     Keywords: microsoft

Does anyone here know if you can do an in-place migration of Exhcange 5.5 to Exchange 2003? Microsoft's site is a bit sparse on documentation for 2003. I know you can do one for 2000, but I'm upgrading to 2003. I really don't want to use ExMerge exclusively for this thing.

    thanks.

  16. RSA CIO talk in the Boston area

    Date: 03/20/05     Keywords: security, web

A friend of mine told me about a talk this coming Thursday, the 24th, by Gerry Wilson, the CIO of RSA. I think lunch is also going to be provided. It sounds like a good opportunity to talk to someone about authentication beyond just key tokens or passwords. RSA is also supposed to have a new product that replaces Windows XP logins with secuirID logins.

The talk is at a restaurant in Framingham from 11 to 1. I think it's sponsored by a local VAR, but AFAIK they're only there to buy lunch for everyone. I wish I could go, but I'm on the wrong coast. ;-)

  17. GPO Policy XP (Breaking your own computer)

    Date: 03/18/05     Keywords: security

So today, I was feeling experimental and decided to set my GPO to insane security mode on my desktop.
after rebooting any service running as 'localsystem' wouldn't start (access denied)
this led to a series of other funky problems... including explorer not loading...

I love GPO's to death... but this was ridiculous..
anyway, it was easy as hell to reset with a 'secedit /import' command of my default security script..
and i'm as good as new now, except now when people try to connect to my shares they get a user name Guest, and insert password prompt. I'm not posting to ask for help just thought I would share..
I'm sure i'll figure it out.

  18. Employee Stories

    Date: 03/17/05     Keywords: no keywords

About a year ago, a helpdesk lead position opened at my law firm. A guy applied for the position and though he rubbed a lot of us the wrong way, he got the job.

I work in another city so I wasn't able to meet him during the interview process but I met him the next day. He emitted an air of arrogance but I didn't want to judge. I smiled and shook his hand and OMG it was out of control. I know that firm handshakes generally signify confidence but this guy squeezed so hard that the handshake was extremely painful. After he didn't let go, I actually had to say aloud "Whoa there, partner. I get it. You are very confident. Please let go of my hand, it's in pain."

At that point, I didn't take his firm handshake as a vote of confidence, I took it as overcompensation. I also thought that he lacked the competency to understand that 1. I'm smaller than him and his handshake should compensate for that and 2. Just because you hold on to someone's hand after they attempt to pull away doesn't make you a "winner" in what turned out to be an apparent handshaking contest.

So anyway, that day, the guy strolled in late and then instead of being eager to learn the systems when there was downtime, he installed AIM and chatted! He then got so engrossed in chatting that he'd ignore the phone line. Now I'm a fan of AIM and all but not on the first day/month and not when it interferes with your job.

The guy was late again the second day and we called the temp agency to let them know he didn't have to come in..ever again.

I love stories like this. Got any to share?

  19. Usability

Date: 03/17/05     Keywords: software, web, spyware, microsoft, google

    Here's a challenge for you.

reviews.cnet.com may or may not have a section dedicated solely to reviewing spyware removal software. It seems that they would, but I can't find it. Can you? If so, what steps did you take to find it?

Many people can find the webpages they need instantly. I, on the other hand, find most sites hard to navigate. If I need something on Microsoft.com, for instance, I don't click around their site's built in navigation. I'll use google's site:microsoft.com functionality. If that fails, I'll try to look around their site. Worst case scenario, I ask someone else to look it up. Anyone else here do the same?
