outlook/exchange enterprise wide email signatures.
Date: 01/19/07
Keywords: software, html
Hi,
anyone has any software on how to syncronise html email signatures across 100 users..
users are completely clueless/can't be bothered to import an htm/template to do it themselves, I need a software so that I can manage at my end.
thanks
I've looked at Symprex Mail Signature Manager, but its US625 for a 50 user license, sounds pricey for a utility.. (its like the price of exchange itself..)

symantec and xdbdown.cmd
Date: 01/18/07
Keywords: virus
EDIT: Temporary solution in comments
If anyone is using Symantec Corporate AV, and have the XDBdown.cmd script set to auto download defs - make sure you check your systems for updates. Mine stopped updating on 1/12.
After googling and checking symantec's site to no avail, I started taking apart the script to find out what was broken.
It looks like Symantec changed providers for their FTP site, and the version of FTP server on the new host does not function the same as the previous version, for which the script was written.
One particular troublesome line does
dir *.xdb chk.lst >>check.txt
On the previous version this would simply get a directory listing of everything named *.xdb, and send it off to a text file to be parsed (extract filename and size)
The new FTP server does not properly support "dir *.xdb" and returns the whole directory listing instead. - thus making the parse not work properly, and you end up downloading a text file instead of the virus defs.
Symantec has been impossible to contact about this, and I found 2 references to this problem in Symantec's newsgroup - which were DELETED (probably by symantec?)
So.. For the time being I'm just going to download the files manually. I'll give symantec a few days to work something out and if not I'll just modify the script to properly parse out the xdb file.
Just a heads up, normally this thing updates itself and I don't even bother looking at it - I'd hate to have someone be on ancient virus defs while all along thinking the machine was updating automagically.

Network & System Monitoring
Date: 01/11/07
Keywords: software, linux
What's your favorite Network and System monitoring Software/Solution?
We're looking for something that will log snmp information from Network Devices, Provide an 'overview' of system and network status, and maybe even log the 'logs' from servers. Something that can help our small IT department track and manage around 20+ servers in 7 remote office locations, and give us a 'window' into not only problems and alerts that need to be brought to our attention, but also an overview of performance (basically SNMP data from switches and routers, aggregated over time).
Something open source would be nice, but if it's good, we'd be willing to spend some money--but not anything as costly as the huge enterprise-class solutions from IBM or HP...
We're mostly a Windows Server shop, but we have some CentOS and RedHat servers as well. I'd like to see something linux based, but would be willing to put something on Windows if it's better. If you have a linux-based solution, what OSs would you recommend? As I said we have some CentOS boxes now, but aren't sure whats 'cool' or recommended for servers these days.

I have an aging AS/400 (iSeries as they call it now) machine, and it's come to light that I'm going to have to get rid of the console. Does anyone know if there is some way I can just use an old laptop as a console? I'm thinking there must be some emulation available?
Thanks

Weird Install issue
Date: 12/23/06
Keywords: no keywords
I am having a weird issue trying to re-install 2003 Server. I have a SATA hard disk that requires me to load drivers at install. Problem is that my computer doesn't have an internal floppy, so I grabbed a USB one. When I get to the "Specify additional device" section, I install the drivers no problem. However, when I get to the actual installation, windows decides it can no longer see my USB floppy. This occurs right after the "format drive" and right before the "copy files" sections of install.
Any ideas?
I have a I-Omega USB floppy drive.
(also, I tried this 3 weeks ago with a borrowed floppy drive and it wasn't an issue. so, wtf?)
-Andrew
---- Update
I went back and got the usb I borrowed from before and it is doing the same thing. This means that its not specific for that other floppy drive. I am totally lost.

I am trying to determine an easy way to backup a MS SharePoint Server. I am trying to do this on the cheap and have a MSSQL backup utility that is incorporated with my current backup solution.
Can I do backups of the MSSQL databases and that is all? And then when I have disaster, reinstall the OS, the Sharepoint, MSSQL and then restore the data in the database? Or will I need to use Stsadm.exe utility in conjunction with the above method?
Does anyone have any familiarity with Sharepoint and backups?

Ticket Tracking Software
Date: 11/28/06
Keywords: software
Hey guys and gal's!
Just looking for some reccomendations to ticket-tracking software.
Our company currently uses Numera's Track-It!, but it doesn't meet our needs, nor is it exceptionally intuitive or easy to use. The reason we had it in the first place was because of the people we contracted our IT positions to used it and licensed it through their company.
- 150-200 users in the company
- Only between 2-3 people will be entering/managing/completing tickets
- Not-for-Profit organization (Local historic monument/museum)
- Settings must be easily changeable and adaptable
- *must* be easy to use/figure out
- Does not need to contain asset tracking systems, but if it does, that's a bonus
- Able to receive ticket information from e-mail
Thanks so much for any reccomendations!

Server is Windows 2003, domain is Windows 2000 AD.

Batch file Conditionals
Date: 11/13/06
Keywords: security
Alright, so unlike my last question to this group, I doubt this question will illicit such an overwhelming number of responses (thank you for all your help with the security stuff, by the way), but I still have to ask.
I want to create a batch file that will a) check to see if an update (located in a central directory on a server) has been installed, and if it hasn't, b) install the file. At the very least, every one of the machines this batch file will be run on has SP1. They were all imaged that way. Unfortunately the machines weren't updated (EVER) in the last year or two or so due to worries about certain programs we have not working on SP2 (yet the people who had this job before me never ran any tests to see if it would work. Whatever), which has been since been resolved.
So, I'm trying to run over a year's worth of updates on these machines, a daunting task to say the least. The time I have to do this is extreemly limited to the early morning hours of Monday (ugh), so I don't exactly have all the time in the world to download excessively huge updates, like Service Packs.
Now, I've never scripted a batch file before, so I'm extreemly noobish at this.
Now, the batch file will have the server path to the files and not the mapped drive path (these computers wouldn't have that particular drive mapped anyway, although they do have access to it), so that's step one right there. I am also checking to see if the $NtUninstall folder on the local machine for the corresponding ID number has been created (thus telling me that the update has been installed), and if the folder exists, the file is skipped. That's not the problem (yet. I'm sure I'll run into problems when I try and run this. lol!).
The problem is checking to see if Service Packs have been installed (for both Windows and Office), because those KB numbers don't show up as the standard $NtUninstall folders.nd the installation of Service Packs takes up all my time, hence why I want to
It looks like there is 1 $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder, but that doesn't give me any way to distinguish between SP1 and SP2. I also see no folder for the Office Service Packs.
Any help figuring out what to put in my conditional statements would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I'm sorry if this seems a bit disjointed, I'm doing 10 different things at once here. LOL!
Will be cross posted all over the place.

Wan Load Balancing + NameCard scanner
Date: 11/08/06

I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions on wan load balancing devices.
I'm currently on a contract with ISP A (ADSL) which has bad latency issues with a game hosted on ISP B (cable) , I'm thinking of getting a supplementary cable connection with ISP B.
I would like to use a wan load balancing device :
Link DI-LB604 Dual-WAN Router with 4-ports Switch
NETGEAR FVS124G Dual WAN VPN Router + Gigabit SW
LinkSYS RV042 4-port VPN Dual-WAN/DMZ Router
LinkSYS RV082 8-port VPN Dual-WAN/DMZ Router
SMCBR24Q Barricadeā¢ 4-Port QoS Broadband Router
I wonder if anyone has first hand recommendations/review on these.. (as in what is crap and what is not...)
------------------------------
I'm also looking for a namecard scanner that can integrate with outlook and multiple users/computers. (Ie: scan to either public folder contacts or something like that.) very good support is a must I think...can't have a product that will die when vista comes out etc..
recommendations?
thanks all.

cpu fan speed problems
Date: 11/04/06
Keywords: no keywords
I'm working on a computer that is having a problem with overheating. The system would all of a sudden shut off and when you would turn it back on it would give me 4 little beeps with an overheating error message. I noticed that the CPU was very hot (58C) and that the fan was running at 1100 RPMs. sometimes at 900 RPMs. I changed the fan and heatsink, made sure it had lots of thermal grease, all the connections are secure, blew out any dust that was in the case that might be blocking anything, etc. I even drilled holes and installed a new case fan for more ventilation. The BIOS for this computer doesnt seem to have an area to see the CPU temperture like most BIOS show. So I used utilities like Motherboard Monitor, Sandra and Speedfan. Checked it with Sandra and the RPMs is still low. Same as before. And the computer is still running warm. It just drop a few degrees but not much. Speedfan is suppose to change the CPU fan speed but Speedfan doesnt seem to change it permanately. Could something be wrong with the power supply to cause the cpu fan to run slowly? b/c I did hook up the new cpu fan to one of my spare computers on the 3 pin connector on the motherboard and the fan speed was really fast on that particular computer. So I know it isnt the fan.
I'm thinking about buying a 3-Pin Fan to 4-Pin Pass-Thru Power Adapter Cable to see if that will give me more fan speed. But I've read that if I do that I will lose the ability to read the fan's rpm. And some mobo's will give me trouble starting up if they detect the CPU fan not spinning from the 3 pin connector versus the 4 pin. How could I get around that?

SQL Server 2000 -> 2005 Upgrade Costs
Date: 10/23/06
Keywords: database, sql, microsoft
x-posted all over
My division is looking at upgrading our SQL Servers from 2000 to 2005 within the next six months. The other day, my boss asked me if I could do some online research to try and find an "Upgrade Cost Estimate calculator" of some sort. From his business perspective, for any given number of factors such as # of database servers, database average size, # of objects, etc., could be punched into some kind of magical formula to output an estimated manhour cost. He figures that someone HAS to have done this sort of analysis already, and is hoping that I can find it.
Has anyone out there heard of or seen such a thing, whether it be an online estimator, a PowerPoint presentation, or even a speech from a Microsoft rep? Thanks in advance!
