Anyone know of a free way to get rid of the "blue screen of death"?

I was playing an online game (one I have played with no problems before), and everything was fine until I selected my character and clicked Start. Computer shut down and the infamous blue screen came up.

    Argh.

I've been having this problem with my Internet Explorer for a while. I cannot open a new window. Any one that may pop up will take over the only open window there is. I have been trying my hardest to fix it, but have run out of luck. I even just updated to IE 7.

Anyone know how to fix this?

  10. Cracking Windows Passwords

    Date: 02/25/06     Keywords: web

I recently posted a how-to on my webpage, detailing five easy steps to crack windows passwords. This isn't news - it's a widely known procedure.

However, one thing that bugged me was how quickly one can brute-force relatively secure passwords. Using the meathod described on that page, I was able to break the passwords “pr1ntm3!” and “c1g@r3tt3s@reb@d” in under 5 hours. I don’t even want to think about how fast one can crack passwords that don’t use symbols or numerals.

Does anyone have any thoughts about this? I’ve always accepted that physical access to a machine is the equivilant to compromising that machine; one can always boot into safe mode, or run a liveCD. However, actually figuring out passwords is a whole nother story: many people use similar, or identical passwords, for many different logins.

I’m just curious to hear what other people thing about this sort of thing.

  12. Excel Dropdowns...

    Date: 02/18/06     Keywords: no keywords

Is it possible to create a value list in Excel that allows the user to choose each value only once? Example: I have created a drop down list of 10 values, A through J. In the column, the user can choose any letter as many times as they want but only those letters. What I would like to do is take "A" off the list if the value "A" was already chosen.

    [EDIT]

Option two would be to mark an X or something similar in the column next to the drop down value list when the value is chosen.

  13. i hate trojans..

    Date: 02/18/06     Keywords: no keywords

    ..and virii, worms ----arrrrh!

i haven't been able to get online since 2/15... i'm actually posting from a borrowed computer.
    here's what happened:
-found a trojan in my sys files. it was unrepairable, so i deleted it. minutes later, my connection got really slow. i was still taking care of the trojan (running tests, etc). so i simply reset my modem.
usually this works, but not this time.
i lost my connection all together.

    i reboot. reset. no luck.

i have been on the phone with sprint and d-link for the past two days.
my computer goes through the router. the computer i'm typing on now is wireless-- no inet problems.
so, it has to be something messed up internally, right?
could a trojan screw up my newtwork card???

i hate talking to people in india who assume i've done something to knock my ethernet cables loose. and i hate reinstalling windows (another top notch recommendation- thanks sprint).

why do they need to include so much junk with windows by the way? there's no such thing as a clean install anymore.

also, this was my first reinstall w/o formatting first. i didn't back up like i should have (just grabbed a few things).
NOW i think my whole "my documents" whuch includes my videos, music, photos, work, etc.. has been overwritted by a new EMPTY "my docs".

i know my dsl is working, but it worn;t see 192.168.0.1
has anyone ever had this happen?

  14. win32reg.exe problem

Date: 02/16/06     Keywords: cms, php, software, html, java, virus, microsoft, google, ebay

Yesterday, my roomy's 'puter kept freezing up. AVG found 2 viruses but it closed out and she didn't know what they were or where they went.

I attempted to run Ad-Aware but everytime it starts running, the computer restarts. So, I deleted all of the programs in the Control Panel that she didn't need, deleted the cookies, deleted all of the internet files she didn't need, restarted, and the computer seemed to work fine.

However, today she said "Win32reg.exe" keeps popping up a screen. I had already installed Google's Toolbar and so that is the same pop up blocker she uses. I ran Hijack This and got this:

I've never had a problem watching movies on my computer until I installed Windows Media PLayer 10. Now, the movie plays but I can't hear it.

    No.Sound.At.All.

My speakers all work. I've tested them. I can play music files of any format in WMP but just not DVD's.

I can't find this problem online.

    Any suggestions?

    Date: 01/30/06     Keywords: microsoft

I have a question regarding Microsoft Word.

A few years ago, I wrote an essay for school using Microsoft Word. Unfortunately, my old computer crashed and all of my saved documents were gone. I found a printed copy of this essay. I have another assignment where in which I would like to use parts of the essay as it is relevant. I want to add/delete certain parts, however. If I were to scan the essay, would I be able to open it in Word to make adjustments? You may be wondering why I'm not just retyping the essay but it's 15 pages long. It just seems as though it'd be faster to scan it.

    Thank you.

  19. playing mp3s in DOS via telnet

    Date: 01/05/06     Keywords: linux

In my room, I have two computers. The main machine is a WinXP tower connected to pretty much my entire home media system. The second is an old IBM 760ED laptop with Win98. I usually sit on one side of the room and use that computer for writing and work and whatnot, to keep myself free of the distractions of games and the like. What I am wondering is this:

Is it possible to set up a command-line music player on the XP machine so that I can telnet to it from the 98 machine and play music on the main computer? I know it is fairly easy with Linux, but I no longer have my linux machine. My laptop has crappy speakers and is not connected to the main speakers, so I'd like to be able to pick and choose MP3s for the main computer without having to keep putting down the heavy laptop and crossing the room when I want to change the music.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.
