So how does this effect us?
Date: 09/30/05
Keywords: html, web, microsoft
Two years ago a jury awarded little Eolas $500,000,000 in damages for patent infringement by Microsoft. Microsoft danced the usual dance, first appealing to a higher court and then exhorting web-standards organization W3C to join them in asking the US patent office for a reconsideration of Eolas patent.Yesterday, the patent office ruled the patent valid. Microsoft is at the end of their games. Now, they have to pay Eolas and alter IE to avoid the Eolas patent.
So, why is the 'duck posting this to the Mozilla community?
Well, let's just say that the patent is fairly wide-ranging. Eolas' patent covers technologies such as ActiveX, but equally covers Mozilla plug-ins, the HTML Embed and Object tags, embedded object pop-up controls, and XBL (Mozilla's binding language). Microsoft has a half-billion to pay-up, what does the Mozilla Foundation have? For sure not enough money!
Maybe Eolas will license the Mozilla Foundation the patent in some way shape or form? If they do not; might not that effect Mozilla's third licensing option: the GPL, thereby preventing any further distribution of Firefox? could the patent possibly be expanded to include Firefox Extensions, one of our few advantages over IE?
I'm not thinking on the possible troubles too much. Until something bad happens, nothing real has happened and for all I know the owner of Eolas is a firefox user and wouldn't dream of hurting us... stranger things have happened.
Qvacks.

I'm having a bit of a problem...

I started having problems with my Mozilla Firefox a little while ago...
To start out, I downloaded 10-ish themes for Mozilla a while back. I was using one, got bored with it, then I changed it. I restarted Firefox so it would take effect, and this is what happened:
Click to make bigger...
The picture with the black box is my attempt to click on the tools menu. I have no idea how to fix it. I'm using Mozilla Firefox safe mode right now. It doesn't really do much for me, but I can deal with it for a bit longer.
Any help? Please and thanks. :)

No Tooltips anymore...

Hi!
Since I have installed the Google-Toolbar (the latest version) Firefox 1.0.7 doesn't show me the Tooltips of graphics (of their ALT-Attributes) anymore. And this is really annoying when I'm browsing through DeviantArt. What could have caused this and what can I do fix this?

Google's New and Improved Firefox Toolbar
Date: 09/29/05
Keywords: software, google
Annie Sullivan, Google's Software Engineer, has officially announced that after two months in beta, Google has released Firefox Toolbar with a couple of nifty Firefox-only features. One of these is the addition of Google Suggest, which shows useful query suggestions as you type in the Toolbar search box.
Attending the demand of many savvy Firefox users who wanted to be able to reorganize their Toolbar with Firefox’s Customize feature, in latest version of the Toolbar, you can go to the View--> Toolbars--> Customize menu to rearrange icons to your heart's content. You can even move the search box around! These goodies are not yet available for MS Internet Explorer.
Click here for more information about the new Google's Firefox Toolbar.
Note: The software requires Firefox 1.0.x and will not work with Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 (though it is expected that Google will make a version available for the final 1.5 release when it comes out later this year).

Mail getting downloaded twice, very aggravating.
Date: 09/29/05
Keywords: web
When I got home from work today, I turned on my computer and downloaded about 70 messages quite normally. A few hours later, I woke the computer back up to check email again, and noticed, to my extreme chagrin, that TB was trying to download over 1000 messages--I have TB set to leave mail on the server for a month, and it was trying to redownload the lot! I managed to stop it and delete the duplicate messages, and I deleted some of the backlog of messages using my webmail client, but what should I do to keep it from doing this again the next time I open TB? I like to keep a fair number of messages on the server because I use webmail at work for a big chunk of the day and it's annoying not to be able to find things. Could this be a TB problem or do I have something else to blame?

saved passwords question
Date: 09/25/05
Keywords: no keywords
Okay you know when you save your password to a site, and you go to that site, it loads your username is in the username field right away, but doesn't load your password until the whole page has finished loading? Is there a setting I can change in about:config or something so that my password comes up right away? I typed each of the following into the bar at the top in about:config: password, delay, and save, each seperately, but came up with nothing.
For the record, I'm running FF 1.0.7 on XP SP2, with a shitload of extensions/themes, but I don't think any of them are causing the problem.
Thanks in advance!

URGENT: Upgrade to Firefox 1.0.7 ASAP!
Date: 09/23/05
Keywords: security
As most of you should know, Firefox 1.0.7 (and Mozilla 1.7.12) were just released, with numerous security fixes...most notably, the IDN flaw. Apparently exploit code was just released for this flaw, which could allow an attacker to take control of your computer remotely. Therefore, ALL Firefox users should upgrade IMMEDIATELY to Firefox 1.0.7 (unless you're using one of the Deer Park Alphas, Firefox 1.5 Beta 1, or a nightly...then you should upgrade to the latest nightly). This is a very serious flaw...please patch!
Download Firefox here.

Opera Wants To Take a Bite Out of Firefox
Date: 09/22/05
Keywords: browser, web
Opera has now changed the rationale behind its future revenue generating sources. Instead of depending on revenue derived by the sale of its web browser, Opera will now be dependant on revenue derived from sources other than its browser sales. Opera is now betting on increasing its revenue from search and service partners.
Starting today, Opera's 8.5 version will be free and without any ad banner or licensing fee. The idea behind this new marketing buzz according to Jon von Tetzchner, the CEO and founder of Opera, is to become the second most used browser, bumping Firefox from that position. Tetzchner wants to lead the pack, but since, IE comes embedded in Windows, Opera is targeting instead at Firefox to increase its sagging web browser market share.
Free Opera....Soon To Be Number Two expands on Opera's new marketing strategy to weaken Firefox's mainstream preference.
Will the Fox surrender market share, or will it fight back?
Cheers,
Omar.-

Praises and Faults of Firefox From a MS Exec's Mind
Date: 09/15/05
Keywords: browser, web, microsoft
Mr. Scott used to work at Microsoft Corporation and was responsible for designing much of what is now Internet Explorer. Being at Microsoft from 1994 to 2003, he held several job titles such as: usability engineer, program manager, lead program manager, and training manager. He also worked as a lead program manager on Microsoft Windows and MSN. After using Firefox, Scott decided to abandon IE's camp and now only surfs the web with the blazing fox. In a fascinating blog, he expresses the reasons behind his decision to switch browsers. Based on his experience and expertise, he cleverly points out the pros and cons of Firefox compared to IE. I agree with some of them, others I totally disagree This is his exciting story written in Berkun Blog under the title, "Why I Switched to Firefox".
To read this story, kindly click the following link: http://www.scottberkun.com/blog/?p=115. I hope you will enjoy Scott's story as much as I did; as well as the thoughtful comments made by several readers of the blog.

Firefox is Back on the Rise
Date: 09/15/05
Keywords: browser, microsoft
After a slight South turn in July, Firefox is bouncing back in August. According to an article written by Judy Westcott in Spymac.com, Firefox is back on the rise; jumping up a quarter point in August 2005, while Netscape and Safari also enjoyed a modest bump in overall usage. Judy Westcott based her article on statistics released today by NetApplications.
In August 2005, Microsoft's Internet Explorer continued its slow, yet steady decline in browser usage market share. IE enjoyed 92.31% market share in October of 2004, but is currently at 86.31%. Firefox attempted to regain its momentum with a modest increase in share from the previous month, and Safari maintained its slow, yet steady gains, improving to 2.20%. Meanwhile, Netscape abruptly stopped its steady market share loss and posted the biggest share gain during August, up from 1.50% to 2.02%.
August Browser/Market Share:
Microsoft Internet Explorer: 86.31%
Firefox: 8.27%
Safari: 2.20%
Netscape: 2.02%
Opera: 0.62%
Mozilla: 0.51%
Other: 0.07%

Firefox isn't the only interesting story in August, with Safari and Netscape on the rise, Internet Explorer faced an offensive on three separate fronts.
NetApplications reported in a news release that in August 2005, Microsoft's Internet Explorer continued its slow, yet steady decline in browser usage market share.
Firefox isn't the only interesting story in August, with Safari and Netscape on the rise, Internet Explorer faced an offensive on three separate fronts, noted Phil Vizzaccaro, CEO of NetApplications. While Firefox rebounded after its small decline in July and Safari enjoyed a modest tenth of a percent gain, August was Netscape's month to shine earning just over a half percent. The Mozilla Foundation also recently announced the availability of its new Firefox 1.5 Beta.

It works!
Date: 09/13/05
Keywords: browser
roachfiend's How to update old extensions is cool, but as I've discovered: With 1.5B1 it's also possible to do it the old fashioned way.
Save the xpi to your desktop (or anywhere convenient) and just drag it into
restart the browser and voila! In some cases I had to restart the computer. Yeah, but that's just my machine being it's usually buggy self.
EDIT: If the install.rdf's maxversion reads 1.0+, replacing that with something specific like 1.9 makes the roachfiend tweak work.

Script question...
Date: 09/11/05
Keywords: php, java
I don't have a problem, so giving you all the information needed to troubleshoot is useless and a waste of space.
When you have an external script in a page, is there some way to view the code of that script? I've tried 'view source' on the URL of the script itself and it just gives me the source of the output.
If so, thanks for your input. If not, I can live without seeing the code in scripts.
When I say scripts, I mean like PHP and Javascript and CGI.
