Firefox always crashes trying to DL a specific file?
Date: 08/06/05
Keywords: no keywords
I tried downloading 'iEx' from this page: http://www.oxygen-inc.com/premium/InsaniSoft/iEx.htm, and Firefox crashed. Okay, random, I thought. Tried again - it crashed again, as soon as I hit "save" on the dialogue box...
Any idea why?
(EDIT):
Okay, now it's doing it on other files... so maybe it isn't just the one file.... this is NOT GOOD. Anybody know what may be causing it to crash when I download? It wasn't doing this last night, and I haven't installed/reconfigured any extensions since then.

You Don't Know Jack About Firefox
Date: 08/06/05
Keywords: rss, browser, asp, web
In my last post in this journal, there was an positive and active discussion about the pros and cons of tweaking FX in an effort to increase its speed. Learning from the experience, I promised myself I would start researching FX characteristics and features.
Just by luck, I stumbled upon an article with the title, "You Don't Know Jack About Firefox" written by Cheah Chu Yeow. Chu Yeow is an aspiring J2EE developer and Web developer studying at the National University of Singapore. He wrote the book "FireFox Secrets", which lifts the lid on Firefox's lesser-known functionality.
In this book Chu Yeow wrote, "If you feel that the Web has lost its sparkle, that's probably because you're slogging across it in an old browser. I'm over here on the other side, and the grass is not only greener: there are none of those microscopic grass bugs that cause nasty rashes!"
"The title contains over 290 pages of Firefox tips, tricks and hacks, providing invaluable pointers to help you customize the browser to your specific preferences." Sounds good, doesn't it?
"It starts with some of the better-known tweaks, such as search customizations and favorites, password, and history management. But later chapters challenge even the most hardened Firefox devotee, revealing the inner workings of Web developer extensions, RSS feed subscription, and the little-known about:config interface."
For your convenience, in case you are interested in further exploring FX, the following URL will take you to the aforementioned article which consist of six pages:

6.0.1
Date: 08/06/05
Keywords: web
I just downloaded 6.0.1, and I'm having a spot of trouble. Since I downloaded it, I'm unable to access >any< web pages. My bookmarks ceased working, and typing in addresses does no better - every attempt is rewarded with a message box "example.website not found. Please check name and try again." I tried add/removing the version and downloading again, but that didn't help, and I tried creating a new profile, but that did nothing, either.
A point of interest: even after I "removed" my old version and downloaded a new copy, my old bookmarks and properties show up. Is this normal, or does it suggest that the old version might be the flawed one, and it's just not deleting when I tell it to?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
K

How About Boosting Firefox's Speed?
Date: 08/05/05
Keywords: software, browser, web
If you are interested in putting more pep into your Firefox browser, start tweaking your software as follows:
1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit Return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:
a. network.http.pipelining
b. network.http.proxy.pipelining
c. network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally the browser will make one request to to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.
2. Alter above entries as follows:
a. Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true" (clicking the entry twice)
b. Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true" (clicking the entry twice)
c. Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 8. This means it will make 8 requests at once. The default is 4. Do not exceed over 8, since this is the maximum allowed; a higher number will not make the browser any faster.
3. Lastly, right-click anywhere and select New->Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. If you are using a broadband connection you'll load pages much faster now. For those of you who are using a dial-up connection you will notice a slight speed increase.
Drive carefully,
Omar.-

Tbird backup help request

Keywords: no keywords
Hey, I'm having some issues with Thunderbird and am going to attempt a re-install. But, of course, I'd like to back up all of my mail first, and I'd like suggestions from the community as to the best way to do this. Should I just move my mail out of the folders it occupies and the move it back after the re-install? What's the best way to do this?
Thanks in advance.

Firefox 1.0.6 Problems?
Date: 08/04/05
Keywords: no keywords
I downloaded 1.0.6 last night and it's causing my machine to run very slowly and jerkily. I defragged overnight, whcih didn't help; I ran AdAware this afternoon and after that, speed was back to normal, but it went back to the problem state after a reboot.
Anybody else having problems? Any suggestions? Should I just uninstall and go back to an earlier version of Firefox? (I'm running Windows XP, FYI.)

Corporate Mozilla Receives Warm Welcome From IT Industry
Date: 08/04/05
Keywords: software, browser, html, web
c/n News.com reported yesterday August 3rd., that the IT industry has reacted positively to the Mozilla Foundation's decision to create a commercial subsidiary that will be responsible for the development and distribution of its open-source products.
James Governor, an analyst at RedMonk, praised this move and said it is likely to increase the use of Mozilla's open-source products, such as the Firefox browser, by businesses.
"I think it's a reasonably significant step. If Mozilla wants to do business with corporate entities, it needs to be a corporate entity--corporations want to do business with corporations," said Governor. "Almost all open-source organizations that are successful have some commercial organization around them."
However, everything is not a patch of roses. There are some worried faces among Firefox and Thunderbird users. David Hallowell, Mozilla contributor, was quick to say that any concerns that the organization may change the software's licences conditions are unfounded.
"I'm sure some people will be worried for the future of the Mozilla source code, but there is nothing to worry about in this case. The code is published under an open license with a huge number of contributors who would all have to give consent for the license to be changed," Hallowell said. Though some in the open-source community may have ideological issues with Mozilla's commercial move, RedMonk's Governor expects few will be critical. "I don't think many open-source geeks will hold up their hands in horror that Mozilla is going commercial," he said.
The Mozilla foundation has been fast to design a web page for Mozilla Corporation under the URL http://www.mozilla.com. To calm the choppy waters, Mozilla published yesterday a thorough explanation of the strategic move and a well written Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) concerning main issues.

The Corporate Face of Mozilla
Date: 08/04/05
Keywords: software, browser, html, web, google
Hi Folks:
Mozilla was born as a grass-roots organization to design a product using the brainpower by thousands of users around the globe. It was not organized as a profit-oriented organization. Ever since its appearance in the spotlight at the end of last year, its star product Firefox, has enjoyed a tremendous acceptance in the browser community. Every month, Firefox has gradually gaining ground at the browser behemoth Internet Explorer. To date, the free software has been downloaded more than 75 million times and its market share is estimated to be approaching 10 percent.
In an effort to attend a new wave of users and its recent relationship with Google, Mozilla has organized a subsidiary under the name of Mozilla Corp. Mozilla Corp. will work mainly on developing and delivering free software products such as the Firefox browser and Thunderbird e-mail program. The foundation will manage projects, set policies and organize relationships among developers.
The new business will be based in Mountain View, as is the foundation. It is expected to have about 30 employees, compared with three or four at the foundation, Baker said. Its software will remain free.
Frank Hecker, director of policy for the Mozilla Foundation, said the for-profit arm will give the project more options. Already, Google Inc. (GOOG) pays Mozilla an unspecified amount to ship Firefox with a version of Google's search engine as the default home page.
Is something sniffing in the air? Is Mozilla preparing itself to enter the commercial field based on its success with Firefox? Who knows? Let's keep our radars active.

Open Links in IE?
Date: 08/01/05
Keywords: browser
I'm wondering if there are any Firefox add-ons that allow you to right-click a link and select "Open in Internet Explorer" (or another browser) for those pages that are simply unwilling to work in the much-preferred Firefox. I'm not even sure that this is possible because it's involving another program, but it'd make those unfortunate times when Firefox just won't work a little more convienient.

Importing mail accounts from t bird into portable tbird
Date: 07/30/05
Keywords: no keywords
Hello boys and girls!
I was wondering if you could give me some pointers here...
I am attempting to import my mail accounts from thunderbird into thunderbird.
The Thunderbird I am importing from is a non installed run from the folder version, and I am importing it to the portable run from a thumb drive version.
I have copied and pasted my mail accounts (several pop and one IMAP) from profile to profile as instructed in the support area of tbird.
My portable is not seeing the accounts. Well, it is seeing them but they are not showing in the application. The reason I say this is I manually created an account and it named the account folder the next one in succession for that account (pop-server.isp.com5).
If I have to manually create the accounts and then go back in and repath them to point to the correct account folder I will as a last resort, but like I said I have several accounts (1 IMAP, 5 ISP, 3 gmail, and at least 3 domain accounts per and I own 3 domains) so this will be a bit time consuming.
My address books imported over correctly for all that is worth btw...
Thank you for any suggestions you may have.

Features I'd Like To See (Anyone know if they exist?)
Date: 07/27/05
Keywords: seo, apache
One easy, one hard.
1) Sounds for various Firefox events. You know, starting with the basics like a click when you select a link - ala IE. Perhaps a light tick when you mouseover a link, then a solid click when you select it. Possibly other sound events, user configurable of course. Is there an addon that I can use to add this?
Next, a bit harder. I was thinking - how can I visualize my frequently visited bookmarks in some other way than simply a toolbar? How can I combine this with the concept of a customised homepage? I run Apache on my local system to give myself a custom homepage, but that doesn't seem to give me a lot of options as I'm not an advanced programmer. So, feature 2:
2) Bookmark "Gallery View".... This would be sortof like the multi-surf on TV sets where you can see a 4x4 grid of channels, so you can see 16 at a time, see what's on all of them, either select one or go to the next 16. I'd love to see this in FireFox. I would see a grid of "thumbnails" of my most frequently visited bookmarks. Maybe 3x2 would work best. It could either be images of the page, or could actually be frames, but either way it would be a *live* thumbnail. That way I could see at a glance which one had updates. The pages would be scaled down so I could see more than just the top corner, and you'd click it (or a button below) for a full-sized version.
Anyone know of such addons/utilities?
(EDIT): Here's a link to a mockup a guy did that basically gives the idea of what I'm asking for: Bookmarks Gallery View. As far as I can tell, it's just a mockup. Plus, I'd like to see it take advantage of broadband and actually load the pages live for the thumbnail (only 4 at a time on-screen for example, to prevent slamming your whole list)...

Firefox file types - It no worky!
Date: 07/27/05
Keywords: browser
Ok, anyone has any ideas why a brand-new install of Firefox 1.0.6 would do this?
It's annoying as hell. And since Firefox does not allow you to manually add filetypes to the Download options, there's no way to fix this. I'm basically screwed, everytime I want to download a .exe the browser is going to freaking prompt me but NOT let me tell it to never prompt me again.
I've got the DownloadStatusBar extension installed too, though that's never given me trouble before...

Quicktime needed?
Date: 07/26/05
Keywords: no keywords
Ok, so I used to be able to watch certain things online without having the need for any plugin or any extension. But now I can't view anything that has sound/certain media, things like pages on www.ytmnd.com, it asks for a plugin and then it tells me to download and install quicktime and I have to install it manually. I never needed it before, why do I need it now?
Also on other sites that have media on them, like a media player with play buttons and such, they will not show up, the buttons, just the screen will play, but no buttons.
I'm on Mozilla Firefox 1.0.6
The only extensions that I have are the Tabbed one and the Accuweather one.

Problem with Update Arrow...thingy.
Date: 07/25/05
Keywords: browser
Hihi!
Forgive me if I’m being utterly stupid and missing something obvious here, but I’m having a slight problem with the Firefox updates.
A couple of days ago I got the notification that critical updates were available, so, as per usual I clicked on the little red arrow at the top of the browser to download and then install the update. All went well – or so I thought.
As expected it told me that my extensions were disabled, but I noticed that the critical update arrow was still present. So I clicked it again, thinking that perhaps it might have been updates for my extensions or themes. Anyway, it checked and said that there were some available, only when the box where they would usually be listed appeared, it was empty. I tried cancelling, but the update arrow was still there. So I did it again, this time choosing to download the updates, but it just did that thing were it seems to be downloading indefinitely (this is based on having it apparently downloading for over 3 hours on a 2.2 Mb connection and it still not being completed.)
Anyway, I uninstalled all my extensions and themes, just in case it was a problem with any of those, but still the arrow is there. So I downloaded and reinstalled the update again and it’s still there.
I don’t suppose it’s really a big issue, but I’d really like to get rid of that arrow as it is…somewhat annoying *grin* Plus I’m a little concerned that I’ll miss an actual real update as and when the next one is released.
So, any suggestions/advice etc would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Edit: Thanks for all the comments so far! At least it helps a little to know I'm not the only one this is happening to. I'd comment to you all individually but I'd only be repeating myself so I thought I'd thank you all for your comments here instead. :)

Gmail and firefox
Date: 07/23/05
Keywords: google
I am running mozilla firefox v. 1.05 with tabbed browsing and adblock installed on a computer running windows xp pro. The computer has multiple user accounts on it. Anyways under the admin account I cannot check gmail with firefox in the admin account however in all the limited account it runs fine and there is no problem. If I start up under firefox safe mode I can check gmail. I can log into gmail however once I log in all I get is a white screen and I never see the "loading tab" or anything else. Please advise, thank you.
::EDIT:: I fixed it. Someone added all content from gmail.google.com to adblock. I solved my own problem.

Profiles.
Date: 07/19/05
Keywords: web
I was using Firefox this morning when a message popped up asking me to choose a profile. I hadn't done anything (that I knew of) to prompt it, I was just on a web page. I tried to pick the default profile but it wouldn't let me so I created a new one thinking that I could change it back later. So Firefox opens again but looking different and with no bookmarks etc as it is a different profile. Since then I have spent ages trying to work out how to get my old profile back but have had no luck at all. I have gone through everything I can think of, searched the help menu and restarted my PC but nothing :(
Can someone here plz help me with this?

Spam Button...?
Date: 07/15/05
Keywords: no keywords
This has got to be easy (or already exists), but I really don't have the time to code it up myself...
The concept is this:
- Add a button to the button-bar in TB which would send the selected email to an address specified in the configuration for this plugin
- Target email should be specified in the configuration
- Option to "strip subject" should be in configuration (checkbox)
- Option on how the message should be sent (forward inline, forward attachment) should be in config
I'm really curious how this would be written though. For those of you out there who have written plugins for Mozilla/FF/TB before, what do you feel the complexity of this would be?
-- Cheers!
