  5. Firefox on OSX - Stop it from using Desktop as a tempfile area?

    Date: 07/09/07     Keywords: no keywords

    I'm having issues with Firefox after I moved from Windows to OSX.

    I have set Firefox to "Always ask me where to save" - which works great - IF I'm saving a file. However, if I'm OPENING a file with another program (such as PDF files getting opened in Preview, or a .torrent file, etc), it just dumps a copy of the file ON THE DESKTOP as a temporary folder!

    Despite some people's beliefs, the desktop is not a dumping bin for anything and everything. How can I stop Firefox from doing this, and quit having to delete dozens of files on my desktop every day?

  6. help! extra instance of firefox. :(

    Date: 07/03/07     Keywords: browser

    Since upgrading to 2.0.0.4 from previous version:

    A. Upon launch, a small Firefox box - with the minimize, full screen, close buttons (and the 'fox logo) comes up and docks itself to the upper left corner of my screen. It does nothing. A second, real browser window opens after a few moments, and it is with this window that I can check email, etc.

    B. Whenever I click on a link from Thunderbird, another instance of Firefox is also launched. The link opens up in a tab on the (main/first) browser window, and the new instance does the same thing, hang out in that corner - as shown in the screencap.

    So: How can I get rid of this extra instance of Firefox? Thanks in advance for your help.

  7. Thunderbird's junk mail filtering, and cookies in FF

    Date: 06/30/07     Keywords: web, linux, spam

    I recently switched from XP to Ubuntu Linux, and with it switched from IE7 and Windows Live Mail Desktop to Firefox and Thunderbird. Firefox is fine, but I am not exactly impressed with Thunderbird so far.

    My main email accounts are a pop3 one and a Hotmail account, so I downloaded the Webmail extension for Thunderbird, and it appears to be working fine, even if actually getting the right version of Thunderbird for it was a complete pain in the neck. (To explain, Webmail uses TB version 2, and Ubuntu's repositories only had 1.5.12. If you download the new version from Mozilla, it doesn't overwrite the older version despite what Mozilla says - it will run alongside it, ignoring all of your settings and refusing to import mail, so I had to do that manually.) My biggest problem with it at the moment is the way it deals with spam emails. I've been training it by giving it plenty of junk daily for the last three or so weeks, but it's only catching perhaps 60% of it, and at the same time is catching some legitimate emails. These aren't clever spams it's missing; the one I just marked as spam and moved was entitled "Would you like to show your partner/s your sexual strength and power?". Additionally, when it does catch it, if it's sent to my pop3 account it doesn't move it to the Junk folder like it's set up to. It moves junk from Hotmail easily, though.

    Is there any way I can make it better, short of writing message filters myself to move things to Junk automatically? On Windows, WLM caught about 95% of spam and didn't keep putting real emails in Junk, and given how much praise there is for Thunderbird's spam filters I didn't expect them to be this unreliable. I've also found that I can't reply to Livejournal comments via Thunderbird, but seem to remember this was already a problem ages ago when I tried using Thunderbird for Windows, so I assume there isn't a workaround?

    Firefox has been a much easier switch, but there are two features I'm missing from IE7. Is there any way to do the following?
    - set it up to prompt you on a per-domain basis to accept/reject cookies - it seems as if I can't do it from a dialog when I visit new sites like I did with IE, and have to produce a list of either blocked or allowed sites manually. Or, can I import IE's list of domains to reject cookies from? I don't want to have to keep clearing cookies manually.
    - make new tabs open my homepage by default rather than a blank page.

    Thanks for any help you can give me :)

  8. Image Issues

    Date: 06/22/07     Keywords: web

    Hi, heres the issue. Mozilla 5.0 is incorrectly displaying some graphics on my web page. When pages loads only some of the images are showing as white boxes the rest are just fine. When I use IE 5 the graphics are showing just fine. I'm not having problems with user pictures but the themes and the information under the user pics are not showing. I have tried creating a new profile, followed the handy dandy FAQ for problems on there website and everything appears the be correct.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  9. puzzling problem

    Date: 06/15/07     Keywords: web

    I'm currently using Firefox ver. 2.0.0.4.

    I love FF and have never had any problems until now. I don't have any add-ons, and nothing that I know of has changed recently. I do recall a recent minor FF update, but I can't recall exactly when it was. Everything is running fine except for one webpage that I visit regularly. She recently changed it to a new location and at first I could see it fine, but suddenly (in the past several days) none of the graphics will show up, not even a placeholder for the graphics. I can view it fine in IE7.

    Any thoughts?

    Hey guys!

    Here's my situation: I opened a word document in firefox (I have the most recent version if that matters) yesterday, and I made some changes to it. I hit the save button, but now I can't seem to find it.

    I've checked my temp files, even did an extensive search, but nothing.

    Is my (edited) file gone for good?

  15. Nonsense in Firefox, Slackware 11 Xorg, and the scrolly mouse

    Date: 05/29/07     Keywords: web, microsoft

    This is sort of an embarassing problem, but I blame Microsoft for introducing something as stupid as a mouse clit with vertical and horizontal scrolling (circa 2003 or so) in the first place.

    I have the "standard" $12 microsoft optical mouse, the one that can be adapted to a USB port, connected to the PS/2 port.

    After changing the mouse detection to "Auto", the scroll wheel worked properly. It was previously set to PS/2 protocol. Fine.

    Imagine my horror when I started using firefox and really weird shit started happening with the scroll wheel. At first, it was the part where if you scroll down to the end of a webpage, it advances or retreats in history. WTF? Who thought that up?!? Why? Anyways, that was apparently a very common problem for all sorts of Firefox users. I wasted no time disabling that.

    Once I started scrolling with some vigor again, I noticed something odd: the mouse would scroll slower when I moved the scroll wheel fast. I thought nothing of it until I ended up at a page that didn't fit in the Firefox window horizontally or vertically.

    Scrolling fast actually scrolls diagonally thru the document.

    I went into about:config and changed all the settings for firefox horizontal scrolling with a mouse to zeros. The horrible horizontal scrolling stopped, but the paradoxical slow scrolling when moving the wheel quickly is still a hideous problem.

    I can't figure out if Firefox is just plain FUBAR (After the issue with Scrolling Thru History! function, I have zero faith in the ap's handling of mouse events) or if Xorg has decided that every genuine microsoft mouse ever made must have a joystick scroller - mine does not.

    HALP!

    Via KT400 with 1.833 Athlon, 768MB DDR333, nothing odd in /var/log/messages or dmesg. Never had this problem or anything like it with the previous install of RedHat 9 and Mozilla or SeaMonkey or anything else (tho in all fairness, the firefox package wouldn't even install in that OS, so who knows...)

  16. Autoromanization of Japanese?

    Date: 05/27/07     Keywords: no keywords

    Is there any Firefox, Mozilla, or XFree86 compatible solution that will automatically perform Romanization of Japanese character sets as described in the translation tables on Wikipedia?

    While there is no solution in sight for Chinese, such an option would make the experience of seeing Japanese characters much easier on the eyes in addition to giving American wax tadpole biters like me a chance to badly read Japanese out loud.

    I definitely think this should be an option, even if it results in occasional misinterpretation.

  17. Rich Text Cut/Copy/Paste on GoogleDocs and LJ

    Date: 05/13/07     Keywords: browser, java, security, web, google

    If you've ever edited a document in the word processor of docs.google.com and right clicked to select "copy" or "paste"; you've likely seen a message telling you that Firefox/Mozilla doesn't support the copy/cut/paste functionality. You can see a similar error message in LJ's post/comment web interface: copy and paste isn't allowed?

    Well, it just ain't true! Our preferred browser simply has some security settings that must be modified to allow clipboard functions from Javascript. Just add the following to your user.js file:

    user_pref("capability.policy.policynames", "allowclipboard");
    user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.sites", "http://docs.google.com");
    user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.Clipboard.cutcopy", "allAccess");
    user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.Clipboard.paste", "allAccess");

    The same technique can also be used to activate the copy/paste right click in the rich text editor on LJ, but I'll leave that as an exercise for the reader.

  18. Firefox Update 2.0.0.3 to 2.0.0.2???

    Date: 05/12/07     Keywords: no keywords

    Hi!

    I'm puzzling about an update notification I got just 10 minutes ago, that Firefox 2.0.0.2 is ready to install. Well, it would be finde with me... BUT (!) I have already installed Firefox 2.0.0.3 on my system! I have no idea what the f... is going on here?

    I made a screenshot of the about-box and the update notification HERE to show that this is really true. Has anyone an idea what this is? The "Details"-Buttons redirects to this address. And no, I didn't click on "Firefox jetzt neu starten" ("Restart Firefox now") yet and I don't know what happens then.

    Crossposted in '[info]'firefoxusers.

    UPDATE:
    The info on this site helped to fix the problem. The notification is gone and after a restart the current version is still 2.0.0.3.

  20. toolbar & window customizations don't save

    Date: 04/25/07     Keywords: browser

    Whenever I close firefox and re-open it, two settings are reset.  The first one is all the icons i've changed around in the toolbar, that's reset to the default icons.  The second thing that's reset is the browser's position and size.  I had it how I liked it and now whenever I try to change it back, the customization only lasts as long as I don't close firefox.

    I've tried un-install/re-install.  I've tried getting rid of key folders but apparently I haven't gotten close to resolving this.  Does anyone out there know what causes this and/or how to fix it?
