"Drive letter" Internet access (?)
Date: 06/21/05
(Software) Keywords: software
Hi folks,
I have several documents that I need to access from multiple workstations, at home and at work, where it would just be simpler if I could access them via an Internet file store somehow.
I'm not bothered if I need to install plug-in software to do it, or even (despite the subject) if it's not via drive letter access. Some other form of access is fine as long as the opening and saving is streamlined, and doesn't require FTP etc.
Is there such a thing available?
TIA

Slightly off-topic - MP3 Player Suggestions?
Date: 06/21/05
(Computer Help) Keywords: software
Sorry if this is slightly off topic...it's close to a computer question.
I am just wondering if anyone has a suggestion for an mp3 player.
Here are my very picky requirements:
1. built-in memory of some sort - no hard drive inside (size is the issue)
2. at least 1 GB storage
3. accessible like a plain old hard disk when plugged in - no software required
4. USB 1.1 and 2.0 compliant
5. small...as small as possible
6. single battery - probably 1xAAA - and decent battery life
7. an interface where I can scroll through folders (and see a list on a screen) and scroll through files (and see a list on a screen) - i.e. nothing like the iPod shuffle
8. Windows XP and 2000 compatibility
any ideas?

Secure online storage
Date: 06/22/05
(Web Development) Keywords: php, mysql, software, html, asp, sql, security, web, linux, hosting, yahoo
I have a group of users (100 or so) that need read/write access to a document (excel) of sensitive information. Since they are all over the place, they requested a web application to be able to access from anywhere whenever they need to modify or look at this document. I'm trying to figure out what is the best way to provide a secure way to only allow these specific users to access this document.
ideas have included:
Plone - complex, looking for simplicity
phpBB - requires me to set up a mysql linux box somewhere which might be possible
Yahoo groups - not very secure but basically what i want
any other ideas? Security of this information is the biggest priority. i currently have both linux/windows available to host.
i know some html, coldfusion, asp, but hosting coldfusion is a problem which is why i'm looking for preconfigured apps if possible.

More on software patents
Date: 06/22/05

Software patents are still in the news. The European patent directive continues to lumber forward, despite overwhelming opposition from groups on all corners -- excepting the big software companies that will win big if sofware patents become law in Europe as well as the U.S. Not surprisingly, Richard Stallman has no kind words for software [...]

Design of the Day : Abstract Factory Pattern
Date: 06/25/05
(Algorithms) Keywords: software
PREFACE:
By popular demand, here is the first of the Design of the Day series.
INTENT:
1) Much like "Word of the Day" only related to Algorithms, Advanced Datastructures, or Patterns.
2) Expand knowledge of useful design principles, much like expanding your vocabulary.
FINALLY:
I belive it would be mutually beneficial to evaluate wikipedia definitions and make corrections/additions when approved unanimously here in this community.
//---
Without further Ado: The Abstract Factory (wikipedia).
Summary:
"Abstract Factory Pattern provides a way to encapsulate a group of individual factories that have a common theme. In normal usage, the client software would create a concrete implementation of the abstract factory and then use the generic interfaces to create the concrete objects that are part of the theme. The client does not know (nor care) about which concrete objects it gets from each of these internal factories since it uses only the generic interfaces of their products. This pattern separates the details of implementation of a set of objects from its general usage"
Example:
"An example of this would be an abstract factory class documentCreator that provides interfaces to create a number of products (eg. createLetter() and createResume()). The system would have any number of derived concrete versions of the documentCreator class like fancyDocumentCreator or modernDocumentCreator, each with a different implementation of createLetter() and createResume() that would create a corresponding object like fancyLetter or modernResume."

Software synchronous detection
Date: 06/26/05
(Algorithms) Keywords: software, google
Well, without preludes :)
I need a software synchronous detection algorithm. I have been searching Google for already about a week but found nothing but mentions of using synchronous detection here and there; almost in all cases it was analog and implemented in hardware.
Please someone point me to the right place where to find any information about this!

IPOD HELP
Date: 07/02/05
(Computer Help) Keywords: software
Does anyone here know a lot about iPods? I am having trouble with mine and I'm getting frustrated. Because of problems I have with my C and D drives, I was hoping to be able to download the software for my new iPod mini on the internet. I went to the Apple site and downloaded the iPod update, which supposedly has the iPod mini software in it. However, the entire thing downloaded and at the end it said "Failed to install." Does anyone know why this is?
If not, where can I download the installer for iPod mini? Is it online anywhere? I downloaded iTunes and nothing happens when my mini is plugged in to my computer. I cannot transfer songs.
Please help me out, I would appreciate it so much! I just spend 200 bucks on this and my piece of crap computer is making it hard for it to work..
