1. Blue screen + reboot

Date: 01/25/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software, virus, spyware

My very new computer works fine, except sometimes it'll suddenly go blue screen for a second and then reboot itself for absolutely no reason I can fanthom (it doesn't happen when I do anything special, actually sometimes it happens when I'm not doing anything at all!). The blue screen that appears is this one.

My computer runs on Windows XP SP2, an AMD 64 CPU, 1 Go of RAM and 2.01 GHz. It's absolutely not a virus or spyware problem because I have softwares against both that I've run on the computer already, and anyway they were installed on the computer before it was connected to the internet for the first time. I believe it's a hardware or an XP problem.

For info, the pieces in my computer are (being French and being more used to solving comp problems in French, I hope I'm getting the vocabulary right - please correct me if something's said wrong):
    - Motherboard ASUS A8NE socket 939 (NVIDIA nForce4 SLI Series)
    - Sound card integrated to motherboard Realtek ALC850
    - CPU AMD 3200 64 bits socket 939
    - 2 RAM bars Kingston 512 pc 3200
    - Harddrive MAXTOR 200go SATA 7200
    - Video card Leadtek 6600-TD 128 PCI Express (WinFast PX6600 TD)

I've looked everywhere, asked every of my computer savvy friends, and we can't figure it out... Does anybody have any clue what might be wrong, or could they redirect me to a community that might be able to help?

    Thank you so much.

EDIT : It's not an overheating problem, and the store ran tests on the computer and assure me it's not a memory problem, either...

  6. Simple Database Display Tool

Date: 01/26/06 (PHP Development)    Keywords: php, mysql, software, database, sql, web

I spent a good long time cataloging my huge collection of movies and putting into databases. Now I've got to write some php code to display (and possibly administer) all of this information, which I am not looking forward to.
I keep hoping that there's something previously written than I can modify. The concept is simple enough: I need something to display large amounts of tabular data succinctly to end users on my website. I want users to be able to add or remove columns to what they are viewing. They should also be able to sort on any column they wish. All this needs to work seamlessly, as if the user were facing an Excel spreadsheet.
Do any of you have suggestions for me on softwares I might try, or have any of you written code to do this already? Thanks in advance for your help.

Date: 02/03/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software

I have no idea what happened (it used to work fine before), but I have a motorola AOL instant messenger IMFREE device (a portable IM messenger) .. and even though the base is plugged in and i've already registered the base, the software need to communicate with the IMFREE does not want to seem to load.

I tried uninstalling it and then re-installing it, it doesn't work. In the ctrl+aol+delete dialog box after I run it, I see "MX240a_UPDATE" there, but no program loads. It then gives me a pop-up box that goes:

    "Run_Time error '53':

    file not found

everything is there .. the program is installed, the base is installed, the IMfree is fully charged ..

does anyone know what happened? without the software working correctly, I cannot use the IMfree.

  12. Query takes longer to run

Date: 02/04/06 (SQL Server)    Keywords: software, database

I work for a software company and we have this huge query used for billing and it has not changed but in two weeks time this query takes a lot more time to run. It use to take 10-15 minutes and now it takes 3 hours to complete. Only a week or two worth of data has been added to this database which a customer has had for 2-3 years. I'm stumped on how this could happen. Is there a tool to test the data to see if the data is messing up the query (bad values in a column?) I've tried the execution plan but it wasn't much help in Query Analyzer. We are thinking about rewriting the query which would be good but if there is bad information in the database that would be good to find.

Thanks for any suggestions anyone may have.

  13. Is this a good deal?

Date: 02/06/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software

I’m in the market for a computer of my own so I can follow my dreams and get into digital art, photography, and music, but being computer illiterate doesn’t help. I’d hate to doubt them, but a friend of a friend is trying to sell me one of their home built machines for $700 and I want your opinion whether or not I should take it. This is the “estimated price sheet” they gave me…

    CPU- $80
    Video Card- $150
    1gb Ram- $104
    Mother Board- $88
    Hard Drive- $78
    XP License- $45
    Keyboard- $10
    Mouse- $25
Alienware(?) case / power supply / extra fans- $70
    CD Burner- $30
    Wireless card- (?)
    Monitor- $100 (needs replacing now)
*Total- $780, although they said it cost nearly $900 to build.

It already has a lot of useful software on it, and they claim that building is much cheaper than buying store brands, but I’m nervous. If I lose contact with this person and the computer starts acting up who do I turn to? Is PC really the way to go? I’m wondering if a Mac would be better for me cause I’ve heard they’re pretty indestructible, and those are words I like to hear (I also used them in Graphic Design at college). Any opinions?

  19. Printer Question

Date: 02/08/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software

I have a Lexmark X1100 Series printer/scanner/copier. It was given to me by my boyfriend about a year ago, who also gave me a disk to install so that it would work. During the installation process, it created a folder in My Documents labeled printer software.

A few weeks ago, I reformatted my computer and saved everything in My Documents to a disk so that after reformatting, I could put it back on my computer. I went to print something and realized I hadn't installed the printer software yet, but because the disk I saved my computer files on was in my CD drive, the printer took the folder printer software and installed it into my new My Documents so it could print.

I'm currently trying to use the scan feature, and I usually just hit the "scan" button on the machine and the program pops up, but today, it isn't. Of the five buttons on the machine {power; paper feed; scan; color copy; black copy}, the only buttons that work are the power and paper feed buttons.

I can't seem to find the disk that was given to me along with the printer, so I was wondering if anybody was familiar with this model and maybe knew of something I could do to make it scan? I'm not sure why it can print and not do any of the other features.

    Thanks for any suggestions!
