Forms- meta question
Date: 01/10/08
(WebDesign) Keywords: php, mysql, sql, spam
I'm curious what people here see as the current best practice for email forms.
Lately it seems that the standard Form2Mail cgi (Matt's scripts) that I've had in place for years, has started generating a lot of empty messages, or messages from "nobody@isp.com"... i'm interpreting this to mean that they are getting more attempted attacks from spammers. Or they stop working periodically (!)
What is the current preferred method of sending secure email from a form, without the mailto address being visible to spambots? I've seen more php out there these days- But it's hard to decide at face value if any of the purported free php things out there are any good.
At one bulk host, i tried the wizard to set up a php-MySQL "php form generator" (phpformgen.sourceforge.net) but that proved really difficult to set up and i never did get it working.
Suggestions? I'm looking for free, or cheap license for a bunch of different sites.

SplogSpot is service that keeps track of spam blogs or Splogs. The splogspot spam database can be queried by using the SplogSpot API. A nice idea. Is the service appears to be dead since March 2007?
The recently updated splog dump from SplogSpot has the latest entry from 20th March 2007:

In close First Amendment case, Virginia court upholds spammer conviction

What do geeks hate more than free speech restrictions? Spammers! Thus, anti-spam laws are an interesting collision. Spamming is clearly speech -- albeit commercial speech. So are antispam laws constitutional? The Virginia Supreme Court took that matter up in the case of Jeremy Jaynes, a particularly obnoxious...

mail() is slow
Date: 03/23/08
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, spam
I have a script that regularly sends out lots of e-mails. Like, up to 500 at once. And since I don't want to use BCC or have everyone's address in the To: field, I've been calling up the e-mail list and looping through it, using one mail() command at a time. This has proven to be very slow. Is there a more correct way to do this? I checked out some other code I've messed with, like phpbb, and they just use Bcc and "undisclosed recipients" in the To: field. I don't want to do that, it'll make the e-mails more likely to get sent to people's spam folder.
Any other recommendations on the best way to deal with this?

i need to simplify my life
Date: 02/24/09
(Computer Help) Keywords: web, linux, spam
OK I'm really looking for two things here.
1. I have multiple email accounts that I would like to consolidate into one portable space. I don't know if there is a webmail program that I could install on my webspace or something that could use pop email (the one that my webhost uses sucks and i hate it). I have a lot of mailing lists and all kinds of crap saved into thunderbird, but whenever I want to send an email I have to use this computer and that's becoming more and more of a pain in the ass. I've tried zenbe and I don't like it. I don't want to use gmail's feature to import pop accounts because i'm not too crazy about gmail (or any other free webmail for that matter) having access to all these emails that i'm using for my other thing. I don't want to use like portable thunderbird because it's not cross-platform (i use linux, windows and mac osx all on a regular basis) and I would like it to be web-based so I don't have to fuck with my flash drive every time I want to check my email. Something like this has to exist, and I'm sure it's free, I just don't know where to look anymore.
2. I would like to know where I can send text messages from the internet. I don't know if just emailing a phone number works all the time. I send text messages to multiple people on a pretty regular basis (not spam but reminders about meetings and stuff) and I'm eating up all my text messages on my non-unlimited plan. This also must exist too, I just don't know where to find it.
Thanks for any help you can give me!

Background Images In HTML Email
Date: 02/25/09
(WebDesign) Keywords: css, html, spam
Hey, all... I know that HTML emails are kind of spammy, but you do what the boss wants, right?
I've made sure all my images are full direct paths to files up on a server, all of my CSS is done in-line, and when I test the email by sending it to my co-workers everything looks dandy, but when I send a test out to Gmail or Hotmail all of my background images are stripped out. Is there something wrong with my code?
The code for my main div with the background image is:
