1. Shopping Site

Date: 08/01/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: web, yahoo, shopping

    Hey guys,

I'm building a shopping site for a small business that wants a marketplace (shopping cart, credit card payments, etc) integrated with its inventory system. The site needs to have order processing, shipping tools, and inventory management features. Kind of like Amazon.com on a micro scale.

I found a couple of companies that offer solutions to web developers with this focus. Yahoo Small Business (www.smallbusiness.yahoo.com) looks pretty convenient. It uses step-by-step guides to walk the new users through the sign up process and there are other visual tools to compare their services. I also checked out Paypal's site but found that site to be incredibly complicated, especially after seeing Yahoo's site.

All things being equal, I'm leaning towards using Yahoo when I'm setting up the shopping site. But I just thought I'd come here and ask if you know of any other companies out there that you found easy to work with and would recommend.

    THANKS!!

  2. Email/join form spam

Date: 08/02/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, web, spam

I'm working on one of my linkware scripts, a part of which allows people to join (it's a script for fanlistings, if you're aware of those). Of course, spammers have found their way to it, so I'm trying to make it as spam-proof as possible. I've been doing it the "usual" way—checking for fake email, bad strings, stripping tags and trimming et al, but it doesn't seem to be working as well as I'd like; there are still those who end up in the approval queue. :p I'd like to limit this, obviously. Are are any other ways? I don't want to use captchas or otherwise making the visitor who wants to join add more fields than necessary :/

I put up the source over somewhere (http://indisguise.org/temp/show_join.txt) where you guys could see it, and if anyone would be willing to give it a look and all, I would appreciate that immensely. Thanks!

i still need to get back on that post about php, but i'm going to china and things are nuts....sorry ^^'

this might seem really random and trivial, but i'm starting school in september and want to take classes in web design need-to-knows.

i wanted to ask for advice on which course to chose, since i do know html & css rather (if not almost) fluently.

    Here are the course options.
I'd really appriciate some advice on this, cuz i dont want to get head deep into something i end up dropping.
Or cruise easily threw a class...

Thanks. XD (Also, anyone go/went to Foothill? I noticed lots of Bay Area people here... maybe some of you have gone thrugh the classes, or know the teacher?)

  5. Jakob Nielsen on optimal screen res and page layout for website design

    Date: 08/02/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

    Yo homies,

This article may not contain "news" to you, but I thought I'd post it anyway as 411. Jakob Nielsen, for those unfamiliar with him, is an excellent website usability expertwho publishes a regular article on the topic called Alertbox. In his articles and research, he focuses on fairly nuts-and-bolts stuff with respect to page layout, content management and copywriting for the web. I've always found it an interesting read and quite informative. And he always backs up his research with sound data and analysis, too.

The article in question is linked here, with the following synopsis: Optimize Web pages for 1024x768, but use a liquid layout that stretches well for any resolution, from 800x600 to 1280x1024.

In a mainly unrelated vein, I've always thought this guy was very homely yet seemingly, curiously proud of it. He's the one on the left in my icon there, posing with co-author Hoa Loranger, and his bio page links to a hilarious set of high-res photos for download, where a note from probably circa 1998 reads, "Warning: most of the large photos are several hundred kilobytes to download." So cute... By the way, if anyone can hip me to how he developed that über-sophisticated website design he employs for his home page, I'd love to know...

(Okay, now I'm just being catty... His appearance really has nothing to do with how well he writes about and studies web usability. It's just that that photo page really cracks me up...)

  9. Stressed at what to do here

Date: 08/03/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, web, spyware, spam

Hi. A few weeks ago I was using Internet Explorer as my web browser and I noticed these popups kept showing up:

    http://s88.photobucket.com/albums/k193/AutumnRoseAngel/Popups/

So I removed IE and switched to Firefox, but I soon noticed that Firefox kept messing up on some of my pages, but no more popups.

So I'm reconsidering Firefox and moving to Netscape. I'll just try Netscape on here, I've used it at school and it works fine there.

What's the best way to remove spyware/spamware? What programs should I use?

  10. Passing values to a pop-up window

Date: 08/03/06 (PHP Development)    Keywords: php, web

I'm not sure if this is where I should post my problem, but I'll give it a shot.

I'm developing a php website and I need to pass some values to a pop-up window. The user enters their information like their name, age, and address into a form. When they press the submit I want that information to be displayed in a pop-up window. I can get a pop-up window to appear but using $_POST does not work. I've been doing some searching and have seen something about using $_GET and appending the values to the URL but I want to try and avoid that.

Any help would be great thanks :)

    Cheers!

  12. Mailing files?

Date: 08/03/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: web

    Hi all,

I can't figure out why this script to mail a file to someone won't work:

I didn't write the mail_attached function (my predecessor took it from a script site, I think) and I can't say I understand every line of it. If there are any alternatives, that would be awesome, or if you can see the problem with this, that would be cool too!

edit: A mail is received by the $mail_to user, message in tact, but no file attachment.

    Thanks!

Date: 08/03/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, web

    Hey,

I was wondering, is there anyway I can delete websites from my bowser memory? We're not supposed to use the internet for personal use where I work but, well, my job is boring and here I am. They set the computer up so that you can't clear the history, but I figured out how to do that. I have also deleted stuff from the 'temporary internet files', but still whenever i type L into the browser it rushes to suggest livejournal to me.

Just wondering if there was anything i could do?

  15. html server for Mac's?

Date: 08/03/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: html, web

I've been trying to teach my co-worker about web design, but I think it would help this person out a lot more if they had a local html server to test designs from instead of having to FTP everything to a remote server.  Plus the server can be setup in debug mode (all error messages, verbose logs, etc) to make things easier.   The problem is that she is on a Mac, I don't know Macs, except as those things I see other people with.  So is there a html server for Macs?  Even a simple one would do.

  19. Web Developers: How easy is it to set up Drupal for a site?

Date: 08/05/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: cms, php, mysql, database, sql, web, hosting, shopping

Sooo, I am 98% sure I'm taking on a client where I need to implement a CMS for him to make changes to the site if necessary. When I first wrote the quote a few months ago, I suggested Drupal as the CMS because it was free, looked rather customizable and somewhat easy to use. I have limited experience writing PHP and dealing with MySQL databases but understand the mechanics of it.

This particular client is offering subscriptions to a database of business industry contacts. There will be about 500 contacts on the pay list (including name, office, affiliation, etc) and he will add to the list about every three months or so. What he will change on a regular monthly basis will be the articles he writes. The subscription concept then requires a shopping cart/check out system as well as a password/username management system for each user.

Would Drupal be a good way to go for both my client and for me? Also, I'm switching web hosts and am considering becoming a reseller. Is there a web host that has it installed already? Door Host ( http://www.doorhost.net/ ) used to have it, but I don't think they do anymore. I'm considering going with Total Choice Hosting buying either their basic reseller plan or the regular Deluxe Plan.

Nonetheless, who has used this or other comparable CMSs and which do you prefer and why?

    Drupal: http://www.drupal.org/

    Sites built with Drupal:
    http://www.terminus1525.ca
    http://urlgreyhot.com/personal/
    http://www.spreadfirefox.com/
    http://www.theonion.com/
    http://www.echoditto.com/

Oh, I just found this Drupal web hosting company called Site Ground that has all of the major CMSs installed already and gives you 24,000 MB of space. Anyone heard of them? I also found these guys: Canaca.com.

  20. Paths and security

Date: 08/07/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: web

I have a website that has an admin application to add and delete files that the web application shows to users. I am not exactly sure where I should put the directory to store the files. My site is hosted on a virtual private server.

The path to the website's directory is:
    /home/vipservices/www/vipservices.net

The domain is not live at the moment so I can get to the site using:
    (myhost)/~vipservices/vipservices.net/

    The files directory is located:
    home/vipservices/www/uploaded_images

Once the domain goes live I will turn off access with the ~ (I think)

I am concerned the directory "uploaded_images" is going to be set to 777 so I can read and write to it, but it will be accessable to the world, which I obviously dont want.

What is the correct way to handle this?

    Thanks for any help offered.
