1. Please help me!

Date: 08/27/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, web

I posted about my Web site in this community last week and I received a lot of helpful comments. I'm hoping that you can help me out again with answers to some more specific questions.

Let me preface all this by saying that I am not a professional Web designer by any means...everything I know was pretty much self-taught. My site was created almost exclusively in DreamWeaver and I don't have a working knowledge of CSS. I'm trying to tweak my Web site so it displays the same way in Firefox as it does in Internet Explorer. Here are the problems I'm having:

    • Tables do not display properly in Firefox. If you look at my homepage in I.E., you'll see that it has a pink double border around the main table of the site...in Firefox, the outer border of the table appears to be white and the inner border is a grayish color. Similarly, I use white tables on my photo pages that display properly in I.E., but they look all funky in Firefox. Instead of displaying a solid white border, the tables have white, gray, and black borders in Firefox.
    • I'm also having an issue with the color of borders around photos. If you look at my homepage in I.E., you'll see that all the photos are surrounded by black borders with a thickness of 2. Firefox depicts photo borders with a thickness of 2, but they all show up as white instead of black.
    • Finally, I have a hover-link command set up so that when you hover over a link in I.E., the text is green. The hover-link color doesn't show up in Firefox. Also, I have a customized scrollbar that shows up fine in I.E. but doesn't register in Firefox.

Are there any quick fixes that I can implement in my code to fix these problems? I tried using the W3C Markup Validation Service to figure out what the problems are, but most of the stuff is too far over my head and I can't understand it. I'd really appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks in advance!

  8. trouble with having my website email me if someone places an order

Date: 08/28/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, html, web

hi i am trying to update my boss's website for our small business. his brother set it up years ago, and i know enough html that generally i have been able to tweak whatever needs tweaking.

right now we had to change to a new email address, and so we want to make the site email our NEW email address if we get an order placed at the site.

I went into the html and changed the email address info, but it still doesn't email us. would someone be able to help me with this?

if so, i'll post the content of "mailform.php" into a comment on here so you can see if maybe that is it... (something is wrong in there), or i can post whatever else might need posting for your help.

    thank you very much!!

(one thing i should mention is that the website USED to (until i started tweaking it today) have people email an info@ email address which is redirected into our old AOL account (which is the one that caused the need to change email accounts.) so maybe that will give you an idea. thanks)

  10. Sigh

Date: 08/28/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: web

I am fixing it now, but I finally started testing various style layouts against IE7 and its breaking a lot of them.  Not to bad a effect, but  a good example is the work in progress that is my personnel website www.digitalairmen.org.  The major layout elements are staying where their supposed to be, but minor stuff like horizontal positioning with

    margin-left: auto;  margin-right: auto;

    doesn't appear to work anymore?

Anyone else discovered any new surprises with the IE 7 release?

  12. Weird internet connection error.

Date: 08/29/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, web, yahoo

Riddle me this, Batman, because it certainly confuses me, and I can't seem to get my cable company's tech support to understand what I'm trying to tell them.

At times-- most recently last night, after a minor brownout-- I selectively lose cable connectivity. I say "selectively" because what I lose is almost* everything having to do with a web browser. Other apps-- multiplayer games, instant messaging services, file sharing programs, etc.-- all work fine, but if it requires a browser, it's toast. This is true with AOL's built-in browser, versions of IE from 5-7, and Firefox, running Windows98 and XP (Home and Pro).

    * I can, occsionally, get part of a page to load-- e.g., I let a page load go for five and a half minutes and got the top text from www.yahoo.com, and a placeholder or two for images before it timed out.

The systems are connected to a Linksys cable router, with a Motorola Surfboard modem between it and the wall. The router and modem are obviously working correctly, because I'm getting throughput from everything but the browsers.

Anyone seen anything like this, and know how to fix it? I have power-cycled everything until I'm blue in the face, and I'm assuming that there's nothing wrong ont he cable company's end, since non-browser proggies are working.

    TIA.

  13. CSS Wrapper Issue

Date: 08/29/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: web

This was previously posted in webdesign and web_design, but I thought I'd give this one a shot as well.

The original issue has been fixed, but now the content div is resting beneath the entire wrapper. Does anyone see why the content div is being forced out of the wrapper?

    >>>>

    Hi,

Can someone give me a clue as to why the wrapper section of this page isn't displaying a solid white background? My original template was hacked by someone else and now I can't find the bug that is causing the wrapper div to display without a solid white bg so it doesn't break up the nested divs with the dark gray bg.

  17. Help?

Date: 08/30/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web, yahoo

Hello, I'm just hoping to get some help here!

I'm in no way a web designer, so please be patient. My buddy and I just wanted to start a silly website, and so I have been trying to put it together.

The only thing that I can't really figure out is how to get the blog on the website. I've gone the tutorial/faq route, and really I have no idea where to begin. If someone can help me get the blog running on the page, I would REALLY appreciate it and could paypal you $20 for your troubles. Obviously I can't afford a web designer, heh. This one small thing is the only thing to stump me!

To put it simple (the only way I know how!), here is what I need help with:

I just got this typepad account:

    http://wendywayrad.typepad.com/

I want the blog entries from that account to show up on the front page of my website. I already fixed up the template of the blog, making it how I want it to be on my website:

    http://wendywayrad.com/

So, where it reads: "Go away! I ain't done yet... come back in LATE September..." that is where I want my blog entries to show up. I was reading up on domain mapping, but I don't want the blog template to cover up the rest of the stuff I have on the front page of my website, I just want the blog to be placed UNDER the link boxes on my website. I quickly made this in paint, to show where I want the blog entries to be:

    Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Anyone care to help me out? I don't know what I'm doing, but I'm a quick learner! I just need someone to explain things to me in SIMPLE terms, the online tutorials have been a bit confusing/overwhelming for me as I don't even know where to begin. I'm holding up on putting the rest of my site together, until I can get the blog working.

Please comment or email me: morethanchaos@yahoo.com if you can help.

    Thanks much!

  18. copyright of website design

    Date: 08/31/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

I don't know if anyone has any advice on this score, but a few months ago I was approached to design a website for a firm of plumbers. They supplied me with the copy, a rough layout and a list of keywords that they wanted included in the meta-tags. Fairly specific stuff for a change, and I built the site pretty quickly. Then, a few weeks later, I get an email from a very angry web-designer, claiming I have 'ripped off' his design for another plumber's site. When I went and looked at the site, it was basically a carbon-copy of the rough I'd been given, pretty much IDENTICAL body text and even the same keywords in the tags.

I explained to the designer that I had been supplied the copy by a third party, but he was pretty livid (only to be expected). When I went back to the client to ask him to explain, he seemed completely unaware that he had been willfully infringing copyright by copying his rival's site. The end result was I took down his site and told him to re-write all the text and then submit it to the angry designer for his approval.

He has now re-written all his copy (admittedly parts of it are still similar, but, honestly how many terms are there for unblocking drains?) but the designer is still saying he doesn't accept it and that it is still 'too similar' to his design. Looking at the two sites side by side, I really can't see what he means any more and can't help feeling he's just being pedantic now because of the whole plagiarism issue.

My question is this: at what point should I feel as if I can say, look, we've made enough changes and we want to re-launch the site? My client isn't keen to pay for legal advice and I can't seem to find anywhere online where I can ask these questions.

  19. online surveys?

    Date: 08/31/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

Have any of you been asked to implement online surverys into a website? I'm applying for a job with a not-for-profit and the VP I interviewed with mentioned both SurveyMonkey and Zoomerang as possibilities to get user feedback. From the very (very) basic research I did, SurveyMonkey is cheaper even though Zoomerang has a not-for-profit package that knocks off a couple hundred bucks off their business package subscription. However, I thought I'd ask if anyone here as any opinions on either of these services, or have heard any good or bad press about them. Besides, comparison charts make my eyes bleed. Personally, I can't stand it when surveys pop up on a website, but it's probably worth looking into so I can discuss it with my hopefully-soon-to-be boss =)
    Thanks in advance.

  20. Hello and questions

Date: 08/31/06 (MySQL Communtiy)    Keywords: mysql, sql, web

Hello, I just found the MySQL community and figured this could be an educational group to watch.  I am predominately a web developer 1st, and a DB scheme designer by necessity.  Otherwise I learned SQL on Access in 1999 then it took me 3-4 years to unlearn the MS way and now prefer MySQL.  So yeah, that's me.

Now my fun filled question:   Is there some sort of way to join 'SHOW TABLES' and 'SHOW FIELDS FROM' in a SQL query?  Maybe a multi-line query or such that is dynamic.  I've been rummaging through the MySQL reference manual and found nothing so far... though I did try the crazy idea of DESCRIBE (show tables); which was a long shot that did nothing.

    Update:
    Got this from '[info]'beskov's comment.

    SELECT table_name, column_name
    FROM Information_Schema.columns;

And added WHERE to focus just on the DB I am interested in.

    SELECT table_name, column_name
    FROM Information_Schema.columns
    WHERE table_schema = 'myDbName';
