1. Help!

Date: 08/20/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: database, web

I work at a little gift shop in Morro Bay, CA and I am trying to do my boss a favor and re-do her website to help her save money and to make it look much more professional. However, I do not have any knowledge or experience in creating databases or online ordering forms. Or really, even what I need to create an extensive online store for her shop. This is the link of the current online store and mine will be similar only much more extensive. If anyone could give me any pointers on how I can go about recreating this, let me know!

    HEATHER

P.S. The temporary site that I am making is located here. Feel free to leave me constructive criticism.

  4. A question..

Date: 08/21/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: java, virus, web, spyware, google

    Hi fellow geeks,

At every webpage I've visited recently, this line of code has been close to the top, if not at the top:

    < script language='javascript' src='http://127.0.0.1:1027/js.cgi?ca&r=32609'> < /script > (but without the spaces, and sometimes the R number changes)

I've done spyware scans with ad-aware, spybot, and ZoneAlarm Pro's Antispyware, and a virus scan with AVG Free, but they haven't found anything.

Is this proof that all the webmasters on the internet are out to get me? Or have I got some sort of virus/spyware/other that's doing this?

Windows XP SP2, with Firefox v1.5.06 and a handful of extensions (Google text, stumbleupon, a cookie editor, a 'l337 sp33k' converter, a page validation thingy, and adblock)

EDIT: If I view the source of the filey thing, it says this:
    'var blockedReferrer = 'blockedReferrer';
    NS_ActualWrite=document.write;
    document.ignore = new Object();'
    < / edit >

Thanks in advance for any help!

  6. Prettier Accessible Forms

Date: 08/22/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web

I just found this article over at A List Apart (a design/web usability blog) about making better looking accessible forms. I thought others may find it interesting. An example of what they're talking about is below:

    http://alistapart.com/articles/prettyaccessibleforms

"It can be time consuming to make web forms both pretty and accessible. In particular, laying out forms where the form label and input are horizontally adjacent, as in the image below, can be a real problem. We used to use tables, which worked well in this scenario—but forms don’t constitute tabular data, so it’s a semantic faux pas.

I’ve tried to create a form-styling solution that is both accessible and portable (in the sense that I can move the code from one project to the next). Floats have often provided a solution to my problem, but given the complexity of some layouts and the numerous float bugs associated with Internet Explorer, it’s not always easy to reuse a float solution. I wanted to create something that anyone could easily reuse on any project: a style sheet that, when applied to a correctly marked up HTML form, would produce the basis of the required layout. So here it is—my attempt at portable, accessible forms."

    Pretty Accessible Form example

They give you the full code on the web page. I hope this helps others.

  7. Anyone tried "On The Job" time billing/tracking software? If not, what do you use?

Date: 08/22/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: software, web

I was thinking of using On The Job as my time billing/tracking application. It's here: http://www.stuntsoftware.com/OnTheJob/

If you do not use this particular application, what do you use? I'm wondering because I'm still looking for a good one that's vaguely simple to use and tallys well. At one point I was testing iBiz and ProjectTimer but put them to rest for a while. Right now my solution is to manually track my time and invoice clients using the web app SideJobTrack: http://www.sidejobtrack.com. It's free and good.

On The Job seems like a balance between manual and the full blown invoicing/tracking of iBiz. Others have suggested using iRatchet. I'm trying to figure if I need the complexity right now.

I should add that almost all of my projects are billed as flat project fees. SideJobTrack allows a user to bill flat project fees as percentages (ex: 40%/30%/30%). I'm actualy now wondering how a time tracking/billing app would help me...at least it can also tally credits and expenses. But so can SideJobTrack. Maybe the app will let me notice how much time/money I'm burning on a particular section of project before moving to another part. It would put real numbers to your time or dawdling.

    Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

  10. HP hell

Date: 08/23/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web

    Hey y'all...need some help here.

My friend's computer crashed almost two weeks ago. I've got it right now and I'm trying to fix it, but it's an HP Pavilion (*eyeroll*) and it's got me completely flummoxed.

The deal is that when his computer ceased working, he ran HP System Recovery from the special partition, but that rendered his computer unbootable -- when he got to the part of the process at which it was "done" recovering and was ready to boot into Windows, it would simply freeze up. So I ended up having to transfer the hard drive into my computer to recover files, and then reformatting the hard drive and trying to reinstall Windoze. Here's the state of things, though: if I reinstall Windows from the recovery partition, I end up with a computer that won't boot because "the system is not fully installed". If I reinstall from a CD, I get a system that boots into Windows properly, but the graphics and sound don't work properly. But if I then try to recover drivers and such from the recovery partition through the "non-destructive" restore option, I get thrown right back to "the system is not fully installed".

    So, my questions are:
    (1) is there just some step I'm missing in the hard disk recovery that would get it working properly? Or is it really a waste of my time?
    (2) if the recovery partition isn't going to work, should I kill it, or will deleting it screw up his computer?
    (3) if I reinstall from a CD, what files do I need to download from the web to complete the installation, and where can I find them?
Hope somebody can help, because this has got me tearing my hair out...

  13. Attach class to a Session in ASP.NET

Date: 08/23/06 (C Sharp)    Keywords: asp, web

    Say, I have two classes:

    Buyer
    Seller

Say, I also have a class

    User

which can be either Buyer or Seller, or both, or anonymous. In fact, I want User to represent the current session, and have the following member variables:
    (i wrote self-explanatory members' names)

    User.the_page_Im_on_right_now

    User.the_page_I_wanned_to_visit_but_got_redirected_to_login

    User.class_seller_or_null_if_im_not_seller

    User.class_buyer_or_null_if_im_not_buyer

As you see, the User class only makes sense to keep during a session. How can I connect this kind of class with a session, so that the object of the User class gets created when a user goes to the website, it disappears when user leaves; and it stays available as the user goes from page to page?

Maybe there are built in functions for this whole thing, and I'm inventing a wheel?

  18. A Social Networking Site; how much to charge, what framework to use?

Date: 08/26/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, web

Hello all. This is my first post to the community. I was recently offered the opportunity to develop a social networking website. The site is already functioning, but the owners (a print shop) are interested in a complete revamp, which likely will be required since the current site was developed by less experienced programmers. I will likely use a framework such as Cake, or Zend.

The site will offer the users personal profiles, the ability to "friend" one another, upload photos, write blogs, send messages to one another, review restaurants and hotels, and plot travel itineraries with the intention of getting advice from fellow travelers and possibly meeting up. It currently services less than 3000 users, but due to a book tie-in to be released early next year, it has the potential to be very high traffic. It's a large project, and one that I'm excited to be a part of.

Now to my questions. If any of you were presented with this size of a project, what would your time estimate be? Also, given the amount of work to be done, and the four month timeframe, how much would you charge? Would you charge per project, or per hour? I'm in the San Francisco area if that has any influence on the outcome.

The second question is; which framework/libraries would you use? I'm leaning toward Cake because I am a fan of MVC and Design Patterns, but I'm also attracted to Zend and Prado because of their modularity meaning I could reuse components that other people have written to speed development. Does anyone have any thoughts on these?

Anyway, thanks in advance for your comments. I look forward to being an active part of this community as I transition into full-time php coding on this project.

  20. subdomain under password

Date: 08/27/06 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: web

    Hello.

So i was wondering. I have a website for an organization and i'd like to have a subdomain that is strictly viewable to the members.
There are two ways i'm thinking of this:

    a) each member uses their member code as username and a password of their choice.
    or,
    b) one main password and username i hand to the members. (obviously it can't be changed by anyone)

with option b) i am scared the info can get out and it can be easily accessed as opposed to a personalized system where each user uses their member code and personal password.

I am wondering on what my options are, how complicated it is, and what service/program do i need for it to work succefully and glitch-free.

    Thanks a bunch.
    ~K
