1. (IE 7 & Flash) & (Using javascript and XHTML transitional)

Date: 09/01/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: css, html, java, web, google

This is really an annoyance above and beyond my comprehension. I was having some issues with IE 6 with all updates installed.
The issue? My quick links in the tool bar were functioning strangly only *after... They were opening up a new window instead of using the current window.

*I installed XP Pro (genuine) over top of my Home edition for various reasons with my IT friend. But since then the IE 6 had this issue.

I fugured a solution would be to use this IE7 beta 3... It's awesome and quite faster than Opera and Firefox. Though, when browsing, any website that uses Flash will not load the flash. I have to visit adobe.com every time and install it. But it doesn't actually install on my PC... what the f...?

I've been working on my personal website (Family and friendly safe) for over a year. I have no previous education on how to code and it's been basically trial and error. I used to have a lot of time on my hands. Google had become a good friend.

I'm slowly working out errors in my code and trying to comply with XHTML transitional rules for now. My work with CSS is below average and I trust my Dreamweaver 8 for assistance but even this won't help me with xhtml.

How do I implement javascript in with xhtml? Or do I have to use other functions in my style sheet to do this?

  2. buying recommendation

Date: 09/03/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web

my nephew is planning on getting a laptop. he just needs something for WiFi, web design, file sharing, school, playing music and movies, nothing fancy

i gave him my recommendations, but I figured I would get your opinions. he wants an Alienware, but that's ridiculous and not necessary. he lives in LA-LA land and i know he's worried about status and what the other kiddies would think, but my wife and I told his parents that that crap isn't necessary, and Alienware is basically an overpriced Dell. he sent me an ad for an Area-51 m5550 Alienware, he doesn't need it. so, what would you recommend in place? he's a junior in HS and will hopefully be going away to college in a few years.

i told him to go for a 1.6GHz with 512MB RAM, Windows Office(unfortunately, but because it's necessary in today's educational world, but hopefully he'll be able to get it off someone without shelling out the dough), a long use battery, a 60GB hard drive and all the basic other stuff. a dual core processor is definitely not necessary. so, what say you? specific model recommendations would help. I haven't bought a laptop in a long time and I don't know what's reliable anymore.

  3. Swapping SD Card for Memory Stick?

Date: 09/04/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: web

My cousin mistakenly got me a 1 gig Sandisk SD card, and not the Memory Stick Duo I need for my new camera (Sony T9). She sent it from Colorado, with no packaging or receipt, so returning or exchanging it is not an option. And I'm leaving for Europe shortly, so time is running out.

So, any ideas of where/how I can exchange this for the card I need?

EDIT: I guess I shouldn't have used the word "exchange"....any ideas of where/how I can swap this card for the card I need? Perhaps a barter-type website, community or some such non-retail store environment?

  5. One apache server, one document root per virtual host, multiple/conditional PHP environments

Date: 09/05/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, html, web, apache

This is a very simple trick I came up with for my test environment at home.  It's used with Apache 2.* with the virtual host module loaded in httpd.conf and a virtualhost.conf file included at the end.

    The trick is this:

Say you have your virtual host sites in this directory structure.

    /websites/users/myDomain.com/public_html/

    At
    /websites/
    create two junctions/links to /websites/users/
    /websites/php4 -> /websites/users/
    /websites/php5 -> /websites/users/

Now use the following conf file.

    ScriptAlias /php4/ "d:/wamp/php4/"
    ScriptAlias /php5/ "d:/wamp/php5/"

        Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
        AllowOverride all
        Order Deny,Allow
        Deny from all
        Allow from 127.0.0.1
#Tell php where to find INI settings
        SetEnv PHPRC "d:/wamp/php4"
#Tell Apache to process this mime with this CGI parser
        Action application/x-httpd-php "/php4/php.exe"

     Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
     AllowOverride all
     Order Deny,Allow
     Deny from all
     Allow from 127.0.0.1
#Tell php where to find INI settings
        SetEnv PHPRC "d:/wamp/php5"
#Tell Apache to process this mime files with this CGI parser
        Action application/x-httpd-php "/php5/php-cgi.exe"

#Tell's apache files of this type are php mime type

    AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .phtml .php3
#if a broswer calls the server with http://php(4||5).myDomain.com it parses out to
    #d:/website/php(4||5)/myDomain.com/public_html/

    VirtualDocumentRoot "d:/website/%1/%2/public_html/"

So now when you setup your hosts or local DNS server, you can run the same website/application in either environment by
changing out the subdomain.  And further more, there is no way to mistake what environment your in or the need to have multiple copies of websites.
Best of all, you can make other junction/links and Directory statements in Apache so you could test your site on just about every version of PHP there is.

    So
http://php4.myWebsite.com/ would run the website with php4
http://php5.myWebsite.com/ would run the website with php5

I tested this out on XP 64, but because the idea is universal, it should work on *nix environments as well.  I made a project log of setting this up along with phpDocumentor and subversion, so if anyone is interested just contact me.

  6. would anyone know why this is happening?

Date: 09/05/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, web, spyware

    Ok.

I offically CAN'T take it anymore. I've tried to deal with it, it just keeps getting worse.

It's been happening more and more, when i'm trying to do normal, simple things online, like checking email, typing emails, surfing websites. Before, it only shut off while virus scanning and spyware checking, but it seems to happen more and more for what seems for no reason.

    What is it doing?

It CONSTANTLY keeps shutting itself off. And when it does, just pressing the on/off switch doesn't work, you need to go to the outlet and switch the plugs for the computer and the monitor into different sockets, and then it will turn back on when you press the button. I have to do this sometimes 2 or 3 times before it powers back on. Sometimes I give it time to rest, but I can't always do that when I have important things to do on it.

I have a 8-year old HP pavillion #6630. It's running windows 98 SE, and has 64mbs of RAM (it came with that much.) Usually it runs fine, but this has been happening more and more and really annoying me. I've opened the computer to suck dust out of the insides, my dad and I had to buy a new fan and install it because my dad thought it could be overheating .. and I even removed the power strip w/ mulitple sockets on it because I thought it was causing the problem. It wasn't, because even after I removed it, it still kept happening.

Also, one time, I thought reformatting would work. Even after reformatting, it still happened, so that makes me think it could be something internal rather then with the harddrive itself.

I can't virus scan, it shuts off before it finshes the scan. I also can't use spybot to scan for spyware, that makes it shut off too.

I don't have any unnessary or unknown programs running at startup, and I try not to have too much stuff open at one time to save memory .. but i'm a multi-tasker, so sometimes that's hard.

When i'm doing something small or the computer is left alone and is just idle, it's fine. It only seems to happen when i'm doing something important .. you know, typing up a big document (i've learned the art of saving VERY often), creating graphics in PSP, chatting, or surfing. Sometimes i'll merely click on a link, and -- kaboom. No warning message, it's just as if someone pulled the plug. Then I have to get up and try 2~3 times to get it to turn on again. It's really fustrating, since i've tried basically everything to fix it.

Yes, I KNOW I need a new computer right now .. but i'm a college student and cannot afford it, (this is my only computer) so i'm trying to do the best with what I have.

I don't know what it could be .. a bad power supply? even since I moved to a new place, it kept happening, so it's not with the main wall power supply .. I tried replacing the fan (I bought a new one and my dad installed it), and it seemed to be working fine, but either it stops or just doesn't work right anymore .. or memory? even though the computer has a low amount of memory compared to most computers, i've never had that problem before. I used to be able to open about 10 IE windows without a problem, and I used to be able to use spybot before too.

I think it's a over heating problem though .. it only seems to be when i'm doing something very intensive, which would make it overheat alot faster, I think.

Anyways, does anyone have any suggestions to fix it? I really need help, since I use this computer for school .. I can't keep having it shut off on me ;(

  8. cable management for the larger switch chassis

Date: 09/05/06 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: web

    To all:

I've been googling this for a while, and really haven't found anything other than a few demo pictures on panduit's website. I am trying to come up with a game plan for managing the cabling on the front of a Catalyst 6513 chassis. Right now, we have five 48 port blades on the chassis. We will be adding an additional five blades with PoE capability to push all of our VoIP phones in the near future.

that will bring me to a port density of 480 on the front of that chassis, most of which will be populated. I'm considering statically wiring every port on the 6513 to the back of a bunch of patch panels in the next rack over, but even this is a lot of work, and leaves another possible point of failure in a termination...

My question is: how is everyone managing cabling on their larger chassis?

I've been out of webdesign for years so I'm basically starting all over. I have a few questions I hope you guys can help me out with. I've been using Dreamweaver 8.

Is there somewhere I can be directed where I can learn how to add comments to my posts? I'm using blogger right now and I'm not very happy with it.

Also, how can I set it up so I can have multiple users update the site (news, etc) without them going in and messing up my code? Like I said I'm using blogger and some psycho template thing, but I rather not go on using these.

    Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone, I was thinking about starting a new web app to teach myself php. I was wondering if anyone had a good recommendation for a php IDE for Linux. Code completion, coloring, symbolic debugger are a must. I don't necessarily mind if I have to pay for one, as long as it is worth the money. I've googled and found many, but I wanted to ask the community for personal preferences...

  13. Possible job opening in DC area

Date: 09/07/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: cms, php, css, sql, java, postgresql, web

My employers are in the process of opening up a PHP position in the DC area. The position in question is on a team responsible for developing sites, a CMS and other web tools for several magazines, some of which are relatively high-profile.

At present, I don't have any details regarding salary, etc -- but as far as I can tell, this would be a permanent position, and they do pay well, treat their employees well, and they are growing at what I think is a sustainable clip.

Skills I know we'll be looking for:
PHP (5+, some OO preferred, Zend Framework a plus)
    PostgreSQL
    CSS
Javascript (we'll be using the jQuery library)
    DBA skills a big plus
    Red Hat skills a plus

This is just a heads-up for the moment -- I'll put the actual job-posting here when it is approved, but for now if you're in the area and are looking for an opportunity, now would be a good time to dust off the old resume and update it.

  17. web hosts that suck

Date: 09/08/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web, hosting

hello again, and onto the next topic:

i have a client who just got totally dicked over by his webhost, new global net (newglobalnet.com - not that it exists anymore). they completely disappeared from the city, and my client's site went down when they did.

so now apparently he can't transfer his domain to a new host until it expires next march. his domain registration was done through tucows, who sell wholesale webhosting/domain registration to the middlemen hosts. the contact info for the domain is an email address that no longer exists, so no one can approve the domain transfer.

so i'm pretty sure he can edit his domain contact info through tucows here: https://manage.opensrs.net/, but not without the domain username and password. which he does not have.

tucows has been zero help, and the new host can't do anything about it either.

can you think of anything else we could try to get this domain transferred? my client even went to new global net's supposed "office" which turned out to just be a mailbox. no one has the username and password anymore to edit the domain contact info, aside from the now nonexistant new global net.

we're using 1and1.com for the new host (which i'm really liking, btw) if that changes anything.

man if i could figure this out for him i would be an INTERNET GODDESS and maybe get a little more cash out of the project. any ideas?

  18. open source Email class/system

Date: 09/08/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: css, html, web, spam

Instead of trying to roll my own solution, anyone know of a reliable IMAP/POP mail reader to be used in the back end of a website.  What I am doing is dedicating a email account on the server to receiving incoming articles.  On the command of the web Admin or a crontab script, the email's would be parsed/validated, with emails not from another account on the website being ignored, and then checking for something like "@PASSWORD='password'" on the first line.  If thats passes, any embedded, attached img's would be parsed into jpg/png, the email body would be copied into a .htm file, and then authorized by the web admin.

The reason for doing this is that a lot of the content writers are clueless about HTML/CSS so I want to make it really easy for them to be able to publish articles onto the website using something simple like a email client as a WYSIWYG editor.   I am going to use a fairly long email account name to try and avoid random spam and put in filter to reject any email that doesn't originate from the same server.  Otherwise I am putting the KCEditor in the admin section as a another way of writing up articles.

Date: 09/10/06 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: html, web, microsoft

Hello =) I was wondering if anyone could help me out.
I'm using a WYSIWG Program to create my web site and then upload it directly to through ftp.
I'm having some issues with the program and uploading the html pages, it keeps editing things.
    Specially links and Japanese text.

    Links
    I have a script to pre-load a commenting pop-up link:

But the program keeps insisting in turning it to:

I realized it also does this for the images, which it uploads to the server, therefore it losing the whole link but the file name doesn't cause a problem. But with this link it is, it prevents from loading the Halo scan script.

    Japanese

Since it's a WYSIWG program i can just copy/paste the Japanese text from Microsoft into my preview section.
When i look at the source it's been turned into the &number; format.
However, if i click back to see the preview and then back to see the source (if i'm editing multiple things at once) - the &number;'s are changed into the characters in my sourse...which makes them unreadable when i upload the ftp.

These are two problems i have not found a way around, and that are beginning to seriously become time wasting. *sigh*

I've tried to look at the program settings, but nothing seems to be unclickable for it to just STOP doing that.

The program i use is: Nvu V1.0 (by Linspire)
    Thanks
