  2. "Secure" webhosting

    Date: 03/13/05 (Web Hosts)    Keywords: software, web

    I have a domain on Dream Host, and my friend wanted me to host some of his music.

    He wanted to know if I'd be able to host it "securely," that is, have it available on the web for certain people's private listening and unavailable to a random websurfer that could steal his music. I'm sure there's a simple enough way to make his files invisible on my server or secure from a random Internet user, but I'm very new to this.

    Could someone please let me know how I'd do this, or point me in a helpful direction? I use SmartFTP software.

  3. Global IME (Japanese)

    Date: 03/13/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web, microsoft

    Hi, all I want to do is just be able to type/print e-mails, word documents, etc. in Japanese.
    I went to download Office XP Tool: Global IME (Japanese) but it says I don't have Office XP.
    However, I was able to download Office XP Tool: Japanese Language Pack (even though I don't have Office XP? Or Office 2000?). With this program, I can now see Japanese characters on internet websites but I can't type any Japanese.
    I also tried to download Microsoft Global IME (Input Method Editor) 5.02 because it said it was for people who didn't have Office XP. BUT it said the program wasn't for my version of Windows.

    I have Windows XP. It was installed by some stranger who is now gone. So, I can't get him to give me the CD where I can download the Japanese language pack with IME. That would have been the easiest solution...
    Any help?

    I am looking for opinions on WHM systems.

    I have a very limited hosting base right now and I can manage to maintain it for the most part.

    I have used Webmin with restricted permissions to provide access in select cases, but I don't know if it is the most intuitive solution for non-technical folks.

    I went to cPanel's site and they want an arm and a leg for the software.

  5. Please Help

    Date: 03/14/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, virus, web, google

    Okay, I have gone to several computer help websites, googled til I've gone nuts, and asked all my computer smart friends, but nobody seems to be able to fix this problem. So I'm really hoping that someone here can help me.

    I recently got a new tower built by a man who seemed experienced enough. It comes with Windows XP Home Edition SP2, and so far I have had no trouble at all. Until recently when I discovered I'm unable to upload. I can't upload, transfer files over e-mails, or even send files through AIM. A friend of mine suggested I create a 1x1 pixeled size icon to just see if I couldn't upload period or something else. Well apparently it lets me upload that icon, so we figure something is limiting how much data I'm allowed to upload or send. We guess that limit is around 4096 kbs since thats about how much that icon was. I've turned off Windows XP firewall thinking that might be the issue but it wasn't. I've checked network connections, and made sure that I didn't have any anti-virus software that might be trying to prevent me from doing this. And so far there seems to be no reasonable explanation for why I'm having all this trouble. If you need to know more about my computer feel free to ask, since I'm willing to do anything to get this thing fixed since I'm going crazy trying to figure out whats wrong. I really appreciate any help given, since I know some of you are probably busy. Thanks.

  6. Nothing works anymore

    Date: 03/14/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web

    I've considered selling my (nothing fancy) digital camera and USB video capture card because nothing works on my computer anymore. I used to use all kinds of "external" things - webcam, jam cam, dazzle dvc, sony netMD, etc. Now all my stupid computer does is try to tell me that these devices aren't connected but they ARE!!!!! If you go into properties everything says it's working. It also won't play audio cd's because it thinks the CD drive isn't connected either!! OH REALLY!?!?! Because I can run programs and burn CD's without any problem!!! But nooooooooooooooo, nothing's connected..... The jam cam is never connected.... the video capture is never connected.... Piece of crap!!! :( What am I supposed to do???

    Date: 03/14/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, web

    People have always been praising the glory that is Firefox, and I have seen from screencaps that people have edited that blank bar (well mine is blank now anyway) under the address bar to have things in there, like programs bookmarks and even Mozilla options like deepest sender.   Since I am new to the world of Mozilla, could anyone tell me how?

    Also, sometimes whenever my browser (usually I.e5) cannot find a page it doesn’t come up with the usual standard I.e. “page cannot be found” page, but a website called “insta-finder” is there anyway I can block this site? It’s really annoying.

  11. Obscure comma problem

    Date: 03/14/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: asp, java, web

    Here is my obscure problem. I've got a page where a some checkboxes get added dynamically by javascript like so.

    [input type="checkbox" name="extra" value="uno" /] Uno
    [input type="checkbox" name="extra" value="dos" /] Dos
    [input type="checkbox" name="extra" value="tres" /] Tres
    I can then retrive them in my aspx.cs code like so:
    string extras = HttpContext.Current.Request.Form["extras"].Split(",");
    // extras[0] == "uno"
    // extras[1] == "dos"
    // extras[2] == "tres"
    This works as expected and desired unless the javascript winds up adding checkboxes like:
    [input type="checkbox" name="extra" value="first item" /]First Item
    [input type="checkbox" name="extra" value="Second item, with a comma" /]Second item, with a comma
    [input type="checkbox" name="extra" value="third item" /]third item
    In which case we get:
    string extras = HttpContext.Current.Request.Form["extras"].Split(",");
    // extras[0] == "first item"
    // extras[1] == "second item"
    // extras[2] == "with a comma"
    // extras[3] == "third item"
    Which is not what is desired. So my question is if there is a way to properly retrieve these values using ASP.NET or do I need to rewrite the javascript code so the name attributes are different and an another hidden control tells me what the names to look for are?
    Solution is here:

    public static ICollection FormVars(System.Web.HttpRequest request, string varName) {
    	StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(request.InputStream);
    	string post = sr.ReadToEnd();
    	sr.Close();
    	ArrayList values = new ArrayList();

    	string[] labelValues = post.Split('&');
    	foreach(string lv in labelValues) {
    		if (lv.StartsWith(varName)) {
    			string val = lv.Substring(varName.Length + 1); // varName=
    			values.Add(System.Web.HttpUtility.UrlDecode(val));
    		}
    	}
    	return values;
    }

    ICollection extras = Utils.FormVars(HttpContext.Current.Request, "extra");

    Date: 03/15/05 (Microsoft Windows)    Keywords: java, web, spam

    I'm currently running Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop (had it for about...two years), and there's been this really annoying problem for the past few months, and I've completely given up as to a solution. The problem I'm having is that I can't seem to open any new windows. For example, if I'm on a website and I click on someone that's supposed to come up on a popup, it won't. But I get the regular, annoying, spam-like popups just fine. At first I thought it was because of Javascript, like my computer was eating it or something...but it doesn't work with people who insert the " target='blank' >" code either. I've looked through all of my Internet Options and computer options, and I can't seem to find my way out. Any solutions?

    Date: 03/15/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, mysql, html, database, sql, java, web

    This is long so a cut tag...

    So recently I’ve been working on some new stuff. In recent versions of Mozilla (including Firefox) there is now a SOAP client. This means that a web application can access the server at any time, and not just when the page loads. This means a huge amount of flexibility is now available to the developer in a DHTML application. I have been playing with this for several months and realized that a large amount of the code is very repetitive.

    I am working on a application to build these applications. I have a DHTML page which lets you model your application. It pulls table and index definitions from a MySQL database, and then it lets you set up validation rules for each field, set up custom SQL queries (In addition to a number of automatically generated ones), set field labels, and change other things about the data model.

    So far I can auto generate
    * DHTML Forms
    * Javascript glue for the forms
    * Javascript to wrap the soap functions into simple javascript methods.
    * PHP classes to access a mysql database
    * A wrapper to serve the PHP classes up as SOAP.

    Still to do

    * Data validation
    * Unit test frameworks
    * Installer scripts for a generated application

    For more information see my wiki
    I plan to have the code on source forge (project “xulbuilder”) today or tomorrow

    IE7 Details Emerge
    Posted by timothy on Tuesday March 15, @06:38PM

    Varg Vikernes writes "Microsoft Watch has a story about new features we can expect in IE7 (code named 'Rincon') which they gathered through Microsoft's key partners. Apparently we can expect 32 bit PNG support, native IDN support, new functionality that will simplify printing from inside IE and, of course, tabbed browsing. The new browser also will likely include a built-in news aggregator. Apparently an important factor is security."

    And from the article:
    Partner sources say Microsoft is wavering on the extent to which it plans to support CSS2 with IE 7.0. Developers have been clamoring for Microsoft to update its CSS support to support the latest W3C standards for years. But Microsoft is leaning toward adding some additional CSS2 support to IE 7.0, but not embracing the standard in its entirety, partners say.

    What do you guys think? I won't trade my firefox for anything in the world, but it would be great to see css standards supported on IE7.

    I am having a bit of an issue with my webpage. I have images (in the galleries) that are supposed to pop up in a separate, sized window when clicked. It works perfectly in Firefox but something is obviously missing/wrong as I receive an error in IE and Safari.

    I swiped the popup code from another page and I know very little about javascript so I have not been able to sort it out yet. Here is one of the pages experiencing this issue: p22.html

    I have looked around a bit online and experimented with it but I am still puzzled. I know it must be something obvious but it is apparently over the head of a lowly art-brain person. If you notice any other incredibly stupid mistakes please feel free to point them out.
