1. Nonsense in Firefox, Slackware 11 Xorg, and the scrolly mouse

Date: 05/29/07 (Mozilla)    Keywords: web, microsoft

This is sort of an embarassing problem, but I blame Microsoft for introducing something as stupid as a mouse clit with vertical and horizontal scrolling (circa 2003 or so) in the first place.

I have the "standard" $12 microsoft optical mouse, the one that can be adapted to a USB port, connected to the PS/2 port.

After changing the mouse detection to "Auto", the scroll wheel worked properly. It was previously set to PS/2 protocol. Fine.

Imagine my horror when I started using firefox and really weird shit started happening with the scroll wheel. At first, it was the part where if you scroll down to the end of a webpage, it advances or retreats in history. WTF? Who thought that up?!? Why? Anyways, that was apparently a very common problem for all sorts of Firefox users. I wasted no time disabling that.

Once I started scrolling with some vigor again, I noticed something odd: the mouse would scroll slower when I moved the scroll wheel fast. I thought nothing of it until I ended up at a page that didn't fit in the Firefox window horizontally or vertically.

Scrolling fast actually scrolls diagonally thru the document.

I went into about:config and changed all the settings for firefox horizontal scrolling with a mouse to zeros. The horrible horizontal scrolling stopped, but the paradoxical slow scrolling when moving the wheel quickly is still a hideous problem.

I can't figure out if Firefox is just plain FUBAR (After the issue with Scrolling Thru History! function, I have zero faith in the ap's handling of mouse events) or if Xorg has decided that every genuine microsoft mouse ever made must have a joystick scroller - mine does not.

    HALP!

Via KT400 with 1.833 Athlon, 768MB DDR333, nothing odd in /var/log/messages or dmesg. Never had this problem or anything like it with the previous install of RedHat 9 and Mozilla or SeaMonkey or anything else (tho in all fairness, the firefox package wouldn't even install in that OS, so who knows...)

  2. Open Source Store

Date: 05/30/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: software, web, google

I wanted to ask for some recommendations for an Open Source online store webapp. Basically, I want to setup your standard site that allows me to sell some items and accept credit card transactions.

I've googled for different projects/merchants and found many options; there are a few I am already leaning towards (for example http://www.zen-cart.com/ and paypal for my merchant account seem to be an attractive option). I don't expect to have a high volume of sales (it is more of a hobby type of thing).

Any recommendations? I am not looking for something that "gets the job done", I am looking for a open source online store software that you actually loved using. To me, if I like it, it means I will also get involved with the project and contribute to it...

    Any suggestions?

  3. MySQL service craches after a connection

Date: 05/30/07 (MySQL Communtiy)    Keywords: php, mysql, sql, web

Howdy. I have a MySQL 5.0.41 (community) installed on my home computer under win32. When phpMyAdmin starts, I get a 2003 (server is not responding) error.

Judging from what the console tells me (was checked via "sq query mysql"), MySQL service starts successfully (state: 4 RUNNING) and runs. Until the moment any site from localhost tries to connect to MySQL - after that the service crashes (with win32 exit code 1067).

Didn't find an answer on the web (didn't search thoroughly enough, perhaps). Can someone point me to a solution for this problem, or some further diagnostics?

  4. Serious lagging issues

Date: 05/30/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: rss, software, html, java, security, virus, web, spyware, yahoo, microsoft

This may be a basic problem, but it's an extremely frustrating one.

There are times using my computer when it is just extremely lag-gy. One of the primary times is when I come back to it and wake it from the screen saver. Let me give you an example of a usual situation, as it happened just now.

I came in to the computer room to look up something on the computer. It came out of the screen saver, and was sitting on a FireFox screen. I went to file and New Window, and it took THIRTY-FIVE SECONDS to open a new FireFox window. Once it dragged itself through all that it's fine, but that's a terribly annoying problem to have.

Heh, I just went to the search function to find Hijack This, and it took 17 seconds for the Search window to come up! It hasn't always been this way, things used to pop right up! Now, I know that a reformat would probably fix it all but...wow that can be a headache. Could it be anything else?

I am running a Compaq Presario with a 3200+ AMD Athlon XP Processor and Windows XP. 512 MB SDRAM, 200GB HD.

  8. Starting background process from webpage

Date: 06/01/07 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: web

I have a requirement to take data from the user, send the data to external webservices, wait for a response and then update my system based on the response from the external webservice.

Waiting for a response from the external webservice could take a few minutes so I dont want the user to sit waiting.

I'd like to have a queue of items and then have a background process that picks the next item from the queue, talks to the webservice and updates the item in the queue when it gets a response.

Problem is I have no idea how to get the webpage to kick off the background process. How would you do it ? Are there any code examples you can recommend ?

I was wondering if anyone knows how to do this or if someone could refer me to a site that does this. For example, if I wanted to take a popular online game and put it on my website...but charge people to play it...are there any ways of doing that? Or would it have to be a game that I had someone design specifically for me?

    Thanks!

  11. DIY Framework v0.1 released

Date: 06/04/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, templates, mysql, html, xml, database, sql, web

xml.lt has announced the release of DIY Framework. It is an open–source web application framework based on MVC architecture, object–oriented PHP 5, MySQL, and XSLT.

The Model is database–backed and generated by Propel ORM tool, the Controller is inspired by REST and RDF, and the View is based on XSLT stylesheets as templates.

The framework allows clean and precise sever–side development with a fully object–oriented code, absolutely no mixing of PHP, (X)HTML and/or SQL code, resources that have nice meaningful URIs with no extra effort, and many other features. On the other hand, it is tiny, flexible, and not overloaded with buzzword things.

  13. long complicated question

Date: 06/06/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: technology, web

I'm designing a website for massage therapist. Is there a way to either program (or a free program) that allows customers to:
    1) See a calendar of availabilities
    2) Pick an available date and time
    3) Then the calendar would be updated with the newly scheduled appointments

Is is also possible to get them, should she accept credit cards, pay for the appointment before it is booked?

Any suggestions for tutorials, or inexpensive pre-written programs would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't designed pages in a long time so I'm rusty with the technology if I were just pointed in the right directions.

    The site is www.redthreadenergetics.com

    Thanks for your consideration.

  15. Freelance Rates?

Date: 06/06/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: asp, web

I'm relatively new to the community and had a question for any freelance designers out there.  I recently finished a web design program and have been approached by someone with a request to re-design their current website after they saw a site that I designed for a mutual friend.  I just have no idea what to charge.  I'm fairly new to the freelance aspect of design, though I've been designing for quite awhile through my day job.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a rate to charge for a 15-20 page re-design?  I'd like to give her a quote for the project  rather than an hourly quote because I honestly have no idea how long it will take me and I don't want her to have any surprises at the end.

    Thanks much!

  16. Red or blue?

    Date: 06/06/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

I've come to the point where my freelance business has gone beyond just doing websites for people, and because of that, I need to rebrand myself beyond the name of Heinsite to one that's more indicative of an overall creative entity. So I've decided on this concept, BUT I need your help - red or blue, people. Only you (and everyone else that I'm going to bother with this question) can help me decide!

For my business cards, I'm going to use "tidbit cards" - they'll be double-sided 2.5" by 2.5" on stiff thick cardstock. The logo on the front will be raised, and the color on the back most likely flat - I might put a varnish on my name & the site url, but other than that, the rest will be matte.

    Thanks guys!

  18. Laptop not charging

Date: 06/07/07 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: software, web

I have a Toshiba Satellite P35 laptop in my possession. I just blew the hard drive and threw XP SP2 on it. Everything works fine except for one critical detail - when Windows loads, it does not recognize that the laptop is charging. The P35 has three LED's on the front - a green AC LED that indicates the laptop is plugged in and running off the wall, a green power LED indicating the computer is on, and an amber charging light that indicates the battery is charging (not discharging). When Windows loads, the Charging LED flickers once, and about five seconds later shuts off completely, never to return. The AC light is still on, meaning the motherboard recognizes it's running on AC power, but the charging light is no longer on, and Windows thinks its running on batteries.

I reinstalled Windows, thinking that maybe I jarred the power cord loose during installation, and the same thing occurs. I went to Toshiba's website and downloaded the latest software and drivers. I loaded all of that onto a thumb drive, and booted into Safe Mode thinking I could conserve power - well, not only did it conserve power, the laptop charged quite happily, enabling me to install (mostly) everything.

The only way to charge it again is to shut down, pull out the cord, and plug it back in - it will not charge via normal operation through Windows XP. What could cause XP to go stupid with regards to power consumption like that? Is there a hotfix I should know about? Thank you.

    ~Elliot

Edit: The plot thickens: In order to install Windows updates, my 1AM crafty thinking reminded me that most modern laptops don't wire the battery into the power circuit, meaning you can run the computer solely on AC power without the battery installed. So, I yanked the battery out, booted it up, and low and behold I'm on essentially unlimited power from the wall. After my updates installed, I dropped the battery back in to see if that fixed the problem... and it didn't. Turning it on without the battery, then plugging it in after it boots to XP appears to work briefly, but Windows forgets it's plugged into the wall and switches to battery power again. If you pull the battery out, the system dies; it's like a kiss of death.

It's almost certainly an ACPI issue, which I've not had much experience with. Any ideas?

  20. Image Marquees

Date: 06/07/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, html, java, web

    Hi all,

I'm still working without Flash, though I'd like to learn it at some point. I am trying to incorporate all my animation with GIFs and HTML/CSS.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to do a marquee type effect on an image that is XHTML compliant. I understand that marquee tags are deprecated (though they seem to still be pretty well supported) and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a CSS equivalent?

Basically, what I actually want to do is have one long image rolling slowly by like a film strip across the bottom of the page (horizontally). What's the easiest way to accomplish this? I'm not afraid of JavaScript, but I'm also not brilliant with it yet, so spell things out for me. :)
