    Unicode offers flipped versions of standard English characters. You can use a small javascript based utility to get flipped version of any word or phrase. The flipped text can be copy-pasted to any (unicode capable) editor, your web page or blog. View source to see the actual translations. ˙suoıʇɐlsuɐɹʇ lɐnʇɔɐ ǝɥʇ ǝǝs oʇ ǝɔɹnos ʍǝıʌ ˙ƃolq [...]

  2. IE messing everything up

    Date: 07/14/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web

    Sorry, I am almost done with the page now but I have one more (hopefully simple) question:

    Here is the page so you can see what I mean.

    I have been working with the latest Firefox on a PC to make this website. Now that I'm almost done and it's ready to go onto the actual classics department address I decided to check how it looks on every computer I could find. I checked on IE on another PC and a Mac, in Firefox in another PC and Mac, and on Safari on a Mac. It worked, for the most part, pretty well on all the browsers and different resolutions except one glaringly huge problem with IE (of course). The main links (with the drop-down menus) don't have enough space and the last link is going directly below the first one, and of course messing up the menus. Is there any simple way I can make this work on IE without having to make the entire site (table) wider? Or is that the easiest way?

    Thank you once again,
    Courtney

    No, it's not advanced web design, but it's kind of an experiment to see what it is about internet memes that makes them popular and gets them forwarded. I've made a few other ones too.

  4. Lightbox Solution

    Date: 07/15/07 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: php, html, sql, java, web

    I'm working on a new website, and for many of the functions, I really want to replace all the damned annoying popups with much more friendly code. Why even have popups? Well, for instance, in the message forum, you often get a popup when you get a new IM. In the Gallery, if you click on a single image, it is annoying to do a new pageload for that, and then go back and reload the old pack just to select another image.

    For many functions, Lightbox is a great solution, but it isn't everything I'm looking for. There are plenty of Lightbox variants. My favorite two are the following:

    http://www.justinbarkhuff.com/lab/lightbox_slideshow/ - This is based of Lightbox 2, but adds native slideshow support, more keyboard controls, etc.

    http://www.ryanjlowe.com/?p=9# - In many ways, head and shoulders above all Lightbox clones. The window can be dragged around, can include html, Flash, forms, whatever. You can have an event to pass information back and forth between the popup and original window, etc.

    I love the transition effect of Lightbox 2, and the opacity of the windows in Litbox. I love the prev/next/slideshow features of Lightbox 2, and the fact that you can drag the Litbox windows around. I like the keyboard controls of Lightbox 2, and the fact that you can include all kinds of content in the Litbox window.

    I know enough PHP and SQL to get myself in trouble, and enable myself to break/build a site to my liking. However, my javascript knowledge consists of copying and pasting. I have no clue what I'm doing. Is there some soul who like me, sees the benefit of a powerful Lightbox clone that combines many of the features from these two?

    I'd be extremely grateful if someone can help me out.

  7. CSS Drop Down Menus vs. Flash Object

    Date: 07/16/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, java, web

    Hello everyone! I just joined this community (I'm actually surprised I've never joined earlier). At any rate, I've been a web designer for several years but, as it goes, we all run into problems at some time or another. I had originally posted this problem in my personal journal and on MySpace, but got no bites. So, I thought I'd try here. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Here is the problem:

    I'm working on a project for my job in which I've created all CSS drop down menus (no javascript). Unfortunately, right below them, there is a flash slide show, which is an embedded object. It is a known thing that flash objects always appear on top of everything else, hence the drop downs get covered by the flash. I applied the 'name="wmode" value="transparent"' param to the flash object. I also added a negative z-index and position attribute to the object's styles. BUT, these solutions only seem to work in IE for windows. In Safari Firefox, and Opera the menus are covered while the flash slideshow is moving (when the picture is still, it is fine though).

    SO...my question to you people who may have had experience with this is... is there any other solution to fix this in the rest of the browsers that aren't IE? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks so much! :-)

  8. Equal divs & Firefox

    Date: 07/16/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, web

    I'm working on a layout and I've run into a rather annoying little snag when I was checking to see how it worked across three browsers (IE, FF, and Opera).

    That is, in Firefox, the divs don't line up.

    The idea is to have the gray background behind the content/sidebar line up equally and extend to the bottom of the page. The header that says "Navigation" above the links has also disappeared entirely.

    http://www.freewebs.com/celestial-trance/style.css

    This problem is isolated to Firefox, as it displays the same in both IE and Opera.

    How can I fix this problem so it will display correctly in FF?

  14. IE7 CSS styling Issue

    Date: 07/18/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: web

    I recently upgraded to IE7 so I could see what dreaded horrors it was doing to my websites.

    Well, my current portfolio has copped it.

    Just on pages where my content falls over the default page and you have to scroll it mucks up on IE7, the content falls underneath the footer ...

    this is what it should look like (and does in FF and in IE6)

    and this is what comes up in IE7

    You can have a look at it yourself - www.indidesigns.com.au specifically on the web design page

    My basic stylesheet goes as follows:

    body {
    	background-color: #400B35;
    	}
    #header {
    	width: 100%;
    	display: inline;
    }

    #main {
    	width: 100%;
    	background-image: url(images/indi_20.gif);
    }
    #wrapper {
    	text-align: left;
    	margin: 0px auto;
    	padding: 0px;
    	border:0;
    	width: 800px;
    }
    #footer {
    	width: 100%;
    	display: inline;
    	margin-right: auto;
    	margin-left: auto;
    }
    #contentstarts {
    	width: 100%;
    	background-image: url(images/images/indi_17.jpg);
    	background-repeat: no-repeat;
    	height: 343px;
    }
    #content {
    	width: 742px;
    	margin-left: 26px;
    	background-repeat: no-repeat;

    }
    #text {
    	width: 100%;
    }

    #fullcol {
    	float: left;
    	width: 700px;
    	margin-top: 0px;
    	padding-top: 0px;
    	padding-right: 0px;
    	padding-bottom: 0px;
    	padding-left: 10px;
    }

    and the basic layout is like this:

    <div id="wrapper">
        <div id="headerdiv>
        <div id="main">
          <div id="content">
            <div id="contentstarts">
    		  <div id="text">
    		  <div id="fullcol">
    CONTENT GOES HERE div> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
    		  <br />
    		  <br />
    		  <br />
    		  <br />
    		  div>
    		  <p>&nbsp;p>
            div>
          div>
    	  <div id="footer"><img src="images/indi_21.gif" width="800" height="45" alt="" />div>

        div>
    div>
    <div align="center" class="footer">:: Indi Web + Graphic Design :: div>
      body>

    Has anyone got any ideas? I'm so frustrated at the moment as I have potential clients looking at a very ugly site! ugh!

    Thanks :)

  17. Fiction Website Help Required

    Date: 07/18/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web

    Hey

    I'm helping a friend set up a website for her fanfiction. The problem is she knows no html at all so what I was thinking of doing was installing a programme for her that would allow her to have sections for her fanfiction and allow her to update easily. But at the same time allow her to put in graphics as header images etc... I have no idea where to start looking for that though! So the question is, does anyone know of anything I can use for this? Any recommendations?

    Thank you!

  18. Dynamic Detection?

    Date: 07/19/07 (C Sharp)    Keywords: browser, web

    I'm looking for a good article that will help me do the following:

    I have an application that has a toolbar. The toolbar contains a number of objects derived from ToolStrip.

    I would like to put each ToolStrip object into its own assembly and deploy them with the main application. At run time, I would like the main application to enumerate all of the DLL files and detect which of them contain one of my ToolStrip objects. To make this work, I suspect I'll have to have each object also implement a known interface that I can create that will positively identify it.

    I can then load the DLLs, instantiate the objects in them and use them. This will allow me to push updates with xcopy deployment and allow other developers to develop toolbars as well.

    So I have a general idea how to do this, but if anyone knows of a good article on this technique, that would be terribly helpful. I've scanned CodeProject already, but I might have missed it.

    PS: Thanks for the suggestions on the web browser code. I did find some example code that got me on my way (and this is part of that project, in fact).

  20. hosting issues

    Date: 07/19/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: web, hosting

    I have a problem that seems simple but I'm just totally confused about it.

    I bought a domain name with godaddy and have a web site hosted on awardspace.com. I want my hosting to be set up on awardspace but I don't understand how it's going to show up on my domain name. I changed the DNS names to awardspace's name servers but I'm still getting the godaddy "domain parked" page. Does it take a while for it change or should it be instant?

    I'd really appreciate some help with this question.
