    Date: 05/24/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

Thanks to everyone who gave me such good advice for my first foray into real web design. I made revisions to my website based on your comments, and now I'd like to see what you think. www.myLBags.com. (Again, this site is only meant for family and friends...these bags are not for sale to the general public.)

I will probably play around with some of the layout in the future, mainly on the "Predesigned Bags" and "Customize Your Own Bag" pages. Right now the only part unfinished is a portion of the options on the second order form page and the dimensions of the customizable bags.

I have my first web server up and running and have a lot of graphic content that I don't want people direct linking. I had found the following to put in my httpd.conf to combat this. My problem is that I need it allow requests with no referer through. So if I give a friend a link to a file they can actually look at it...heh. I can't think of a way to do this. Any ideas?

    SetEnvIfNoCase Referer "^http://.*\.vigilant20\.com/" local_ref=1
    SetEnvIfNoCase Referer "^http://lynn\.szwalkiewicz\.com/" local_ref=1
    <FilesMatch "\.(gif|jpg|png)">
       Order Allow,Deny
       Allow from env=local_ref
    </FilesMatch>

    Date: 05/25/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

I've been approached to design and maintain the official website for a small band. I've never made a professional website for anyone before, so I didn't even think about charging or anything when I made the original offer, but I know that it would be quite a bit of work so now I'm not sure how much I should be asking for in terms of payment. I'm thinking a lump sum for design and setup, then a flat monthly rate for maintenance. I've been told that general montly rates usually go around $60 US, is that a fair price? But I'm not at all sure how much to charge for the lump sum, especially since I'm not sure what the design and content will include. Can you give me some estimates?

Date: 05/26/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: web

    Hi,

been up all night trying to install an app for some uni work called YAKS (Yet Another Kephera Simulator)...

My problem is make - in the makefile it looks for the termio.h file and that just fucks everything up 'cos termio.h has been made obsolete by Apple ages ago. I looked on the Apple website and it said that it had been replaced by a termios.h file, but I can't find any such file.
Any ideas on how to work around this?

I'm also having some problems with variadic macros, but have found a temporary workaround re. this, although if anyone else have experienced problems with these VA_ARGS during make then any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Will be x-posted to several other mac/unix related journals, I apologise for this, but I don't really know where the right place for this question is.

    Thank you in advance.

  15. PHP help!

Date: 05/27/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, mysql, database, sql, web

I'm working away at this PHP + MySQL stuff...

Now I have two tables - links and linkcats. Links is a list of links that will be displayed on the Employee Resources page. Linkcats is a list of the categories under which these links will fall - Intranet Websites, Internet Websites, and Employee Resources. I would like to be able to dynamically display the link categories with the appropriate links from the links table under each category. I got it to work (kind of), but it loops through the SQL statement to display the actual links however many entries there are in the categories table.

You can see what I'm talking about here:

This is my code, along with the descriptions of the two tables:

  16. position:absolute a no no? Or am I misled?

Date: 05/26/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: css, web

I've read in a few CSS guides and in a spattering of places online that using position: absolute in any kind of stylesheet is in general a no-no, much to my dismay as it's ease of use for position has always been my favorite. I've discovered that when used it presents problems on Macs, specifically in IE 5, but this could just have been because of my z-index ordering.

    Two questions here:

    1. Is it actually not a good idea to use position: absolute, or is there a "safe" way to use it?

    2. If it isn't a good idea, what's an alternative that would enable me to place things absolutely at a location on a page?

PS: I know this isn't the webdev community, but for some reason, I couldn't post to it this morning when I did this.

  18. Advice and Opinions Needed For a Pal

    Date: 05/28/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

Hi Guys, I need a favor. My boyfriend Scott's been working with a designer on his new web site and I would like your honest feedback so we can incorporate it before he finalizes the design. Scott worked on this for hours and hours tonight and thought he was finally done. He was really hoping I would give it a big thumbs up, but I couldn't. I know how important this is to him, and I really want it to be representative of him; professional, attractive, and a good marketing tool that will help him sell his music and talent.

I have some complaints with the site, and I can't pretend that I don't -- not huge complaints -- I think it can be improved tremendously with a few changes. It kills me that in giving Scott my honest feedback I disappointed him and hurt his feelings. I love him so much, but I think he may have kind of cluttered it up and the designer, wanting to please his client, may have gone along with some ideas he might not have originally chosen. I had seen a simpler outline, a snapshot of what the site was going to look like, and I liked it. I mean I wouldn't choose these colors and style for myself, but for Scott it's cool. He needs to convey that a lot of the songs on the album are reggae so the colors make sense for this.

I respect your taste and opinions so much, and I just honestly want to know what you think. If you have the time, and feel like being generous and helpful to a fellow struggling artist, who really needs a good site to showcase his work, would you look over his site and give us some feedback? We won't hold it against you in any way, and would in fact be super appreciative. If you think it's fabulous as is, we want to know that. If you think it just needs a little work, then we want to know that. If you hate it, then hard as that might be for Scott to face, then we need to know that.

I'd like to know what you think of the bold strokes and the smaller ones. I'm particularly interested in what you think about the lion imagery and the photographs of Scott, are there some pictures that you do and some pictures that you do not like? If so what are they? Are there any graphic images on the site that appeal or do not appeal to you? What about the navigation? What about the text? I could just really use another eye here because without a second and a third opinion I can't convince Scott that there are some areas of this site that are kind of graphically unprofessional, if that makes any sense. I know I'm asking a lot, so I'll appreciate any feedback you'd be generous enough to give.

I wish I could just come out and say, "I don't like the image of the sad clowny face on page three, what do you think?" because that's what I'd do, but Scott thinks I am being hyper-critical and I don't want to direct your attention to the few things I don't like because maybe I am being too hard on this. I'd rather get your unbiased opinions.

Okay, now this isn't a great picture of Scott, but this is the idea, to remove an element of color leaving part of the image in black and white. I liked this effect.

One thing I'm realizing that we're missing here is what drew us to this designer in the first place; his use of color hilighted against parts of the image where he had removed the color, leaving these areas in black and white. I want to show you what I mean but I can't find the link, in the meantime here's a link to the web site Daniel, (the designer), designed for his sweet girlfriend, Jill Marie. I'm wondering why they chose not to do the cool black and white thing on Scott's site when this was the main thing we liked about his work to begin with... Oh and I'm also noticing that Scott's music isn't playing when you go to the site. I wonder why they chose not to do that. Hmm... Anyway, if you'd like to take a stab at this, we would be so grateful.

    Big loving hugs,
    Jacqui and Scott

  19. Ads345

Date: 05/29/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, web, spyware

I used to have a problem with Ads234, I thought I had fixed it... but then it mutated into Ads345. Frequently, when I click a link I get redirected to an Ads345 website. The URL will say "http://www.ads345.com/requesturl=where I wanted to go" and I can just cick "skip" to get past it... but this has gone on for months and months, I can't seem to get rid of it! I use virus/adware/spyware scanners religiously (Norton, AdAware, and Spybot). I've tried deleteing the "key" or whatever. But it's still there! And midAdle even showed up on my programs list, but it won't let me remove it. Help?

  20. Gadget Ideas

Date: 05/30/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: web

So lately I've been boring myself looking for some new handheld gadget to mess with. I've looked at the HP Jornadas and NEC Mobilepro handhelds, but feel they're just too outdated to be any fun. I'm looking for some small device that at least has WiFi for web browsing, and maybe a keyboard or support for one. Also I would  like to keep my price range close to $100. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
