1. search.ini hacks

Date: 10/01/05 (Opera Browser) Keywords: browser, web, google

Hey all. I've got a few people in the office using Opera 8 now that it is ad-free, and to further sell the browser (though everyone is understandably impressed) I've made sure to have some cool search.ini tweaks available for them.

Latest one I came up with is for Google Maps. "map" is the key, so to get directions you'd enter (if you knew the addresses, of course):
map 151 Andover Street 01960 to 90 Pleasant Valley St 01844
(From one Borders bookstore to another, heh.)

[Search Engine ??]
Name=GoogleMaps
URL=http://maps.google.com/maps?q=%s

Has endseparator=0
Encoding=utf-8
Search Type=8
Verbtext=17063
Position=-1
Nameid=0

I also made sure dictionary.com, merriam-webster.com, and wikipedia were available as those are popular places for myself and I think others would find them useful.

I also have some LJ-specific searches. Use LJ * for a livejournal page (such as: lj login.bml or lj poll/create.bml), lju for a user's page (such as: lju erislover), and ljf for a friends page (such as: ljf erislover).

2. ASP script

Date: 10/01/05 (IT Professionals) Keywords: asp, java, web

Presently I work as the webadmin for the college that I attend. Presently my college is in the process of an IT overhaul and recently my boss came to me and asked me to create a webpage which may be set as everyone's background and run solely inhouse. This page needs to display the current date & time and the users NAT'd IP address. I noticed that Auditmypc using java would display your internal IP address. The reason for this page is so that when we go to VNC a persons computer we know what their IP address is and this will eliminate our need to sit there and guess which computer they are on. They could simply just read off their IP address. I searched all of my ASP books and ASP data access books and could find nothing about this. I also checked the MSDN developer network and still nothing. I also checked hotscripts.com and several other script locations and could find nothing on how to do this and if it would even be possible. If it cannot be set as the background we would just make a shortcut to the page. Presently we do not host our webpage internally so the script would need to be executed on a remote server however it is in an aera of the site that would be locked down unless you were on our LAN.
Is this kind of script legal? I could find nothing that would imply that it was or was not.
In addition how would I do this?
Any and all advice in regards to this would be greatly appreciated.
Forgive my ignorance, this is a unique resquest and something that I have never encoutered before and I would like to honor it.

Please advise.

4. Drawing Pen/Pad to computer?

Date: 10/03/05 (Computer Geeks) Keywords: software, web

Hi,
I've been looking for hardware, that probably comes with software, to create what you draw manually through a "pen/pad" interface into a computer program. I haven't had luck at search engines because I get all kinds of random results because I can't put into two words or less what I'm looking for. I went physically to a store & they were like:"Oh we just sold our last one the other week, check back later", but didn't give me any specifics, and I went to their online store & didn't find any. I've seen the Logitech® io2™ Digital Writing System, but even on the Curcuit City website it gets a over 3.4 overall rating.

I just feel like I need to open my eyes to what's out there before I start spending money, because I know there has to be more products out there than what I'm finding. My birthday is in two weeks and I may get it then...that is if I can find it! Please help me communicate clearer to the correct name of this product, and more importantly, if you know any products, please recommend them.

Thank you!
PS: My goal is to draw with it, not the "notetaking" part.

x-posted to '[info]'graphicdesign, '[info]'web_design, and '[info]'webdesign

I'm sorry if this isn't allowed here. I read the rules in the community info and didn't think that this would violate any of the rules, but if it does, I'll remove it.

My problem:
I've been getting pretty good at making headers for LiveJournal layouts as well as for websites (header/background package), but I know next to nothing about coding. I was hoping that someone who was good at coding these things could pair up with me and make layouts for people. It would also be great if that person would be willing to help me out with my web/LJ layouts when I have a problem or want to change anything.

Maybe we could start a layout community or just use my graphics site (which is getting redone soon), '[info]'devious_art. I would of course require credit for both of us if we went with the latter.

If you're interested, you can comment here, email me at deviant_queen@yahoo.com or IM me at galelvr66 (AIM), deviant_queen (YIM), or deviant_queen@hotmail.com (MSN) so we can work out the details.

Thank you,

9. session variable help?

Date: 10/04/05 (PHP Community) Keywords: php, mysql, sql, web, shopping

Context: I'm working on a bare-bones shopping cart system and am using a session variable $cart to store cart items. $cart is an associative array holding item_id => quantity. To add an item to the cart, I'm calling the page with a url variable ?new=xx where xx is the item id. If the item id exists in the array, am incrementing it. If it doesn't exist, I create it and set the quantity to 1. In theory, anyway.

Problem: Adding a new item to the cart produces the expected results, but if the page is called immediately after without the url variable, or with a url variable pointing to a different id, it increments the quantity of the item just added by one. It is also the case that when I call a separate checkout page with the display_cart($cart) function in it, the item quantity shows up incremented by one.

(the following code will look very familiar if you've ever used PHP and MySQL Web Development)

On the shopping cart page:

if($new)
{
if(!session_is_registered("cart"))
{
$cart = array();
session_register("cart");
}

if($cart[$new])
$cart[$new]++;
else
$cart[$new] = 1;
}

if($save) //have tried commenting out this part, makes no difference
{
foreach ($cart as $item_id => $qty)
{
if ($$item_id == "0")
unset($cart[$item_id]);
else
$cart[$item_id] = $$item_id;
}
}

if ($cart&&array_count_values($cart))
display_cart($cart);
else
echo "There are no items in your cart.";

Display cart function:

function display_cart($cart)
{
echo "

";
echo "";
echo "";
echo "";
echo "";

foreach($cart as $item_id => $qty)
{
$item = get_item_details($item_id);
echo "";
}

echo "";
echo "
< td align = center >
< input type = hidden name = save value = true >
< input type = image src = \"images/save_changes.jpg\" border = 0 alt = \"Save Changes\">

";
echo "
item nameqtyprice
";
echo $item['name'];
echo "
";
echo "";
echo "
";
echo $item['price'];
echo "

";
echo "
";
}

I've done a bit of reading on how sessions work, but am still pretty confused by it. Is this black magic or am I just not going about this right? Any suggestions, including debugging techniques, would be appreciated. In the meantime, I'm just going to take a whole different approach to this cart, but I'd like to solve the mystery eventually.

Thanks in advance.

10. HTML Help!

Date: 10/04/05 (HTML Help) Keywords: web

Okie, I've been designing websites for quite some time now (http://annmarieweinert.com/webdesign.htm) - and there's one thing that's always bothered me - how people can change the size of the fonts with their mouse scrolly thing and the CTRL key.

I'd like my font to lock into the size I set it at. I've seen websites that have this feature, but I don't recall which ones, otherwise I'd just view source.

Any suggestions?

12. More Support for Mozilla Firefox at eBay

Date: 10/04/05 (Mozilla) Keywords: browser, web, microsoft, ebay

Many e-Bay sellers are expressing their frustration at e-Bay's lopsided web design in favor of MS Internet Explorer. According to yesterday's mozillaZine post; AuctionBytes.com , an on-line news site, is reporting that some eBay sellers have started a petition to persuade the auction heavyweight to support Mozilla Firefox and other alternative browsers. According to the article, some features on the eBay Sell Your Item page are optimised for Microsoft Internet Explorer and do not work correctly in Firefox and other browsers. Furthermore, there is no Firefox version of eBay Toolbar, which is currently only available for Internet Explorer on Windows.

The petition, entitled eBay to provide alternative browser support, was created by Jared McAteer and has 1,189 signatures at the time of writing. Signers are required to provide a name and email address.

"It should be noted that sellers can use Firefox to auction items on eBay but the experience is not as smooth and refined as it is with Internet Explorer. Not all of the site is Mozilla-hostile: in May, eBay improved its Picture Manager tool to add support for Firefox. In addition, eBay is one of the default search engines in the Firefox Search Bar, which we presume raises revenue for the Mozilla Foundation."

If you feel e-Bay has a faulty business policy, kindly click here to sign a petition requesting e-Bay to provide further support to other web browsers besides IE.

13. help with redesign?

Date: 10/04/05 (WebDesign) Keywords: css, html, web

Hi all. I have this ugly website. It's here: http://liquid.rdpdesign.com

I'm redesigning it, trying to work on all the little details so it's not so ugly. The site runs on Wordpress which explains the large CSS file and such.

Here's what I have up so far: http://temp.rdpdesign.com/liquid/redesign.html

I need advice. What's better? What's worse? What else needs work?

The image at the bottom is a mock up of what I would like... a repeated image of something like the surface of the ocean. Or something water related like that.

The layout works great in FF and Opera, ideally it won't be changed... it still has some bugs in IE that I'm working on.

My dream would be to see this site make it into some kind of css gallery... even considering the restraints I have.

I just wanted to let people know about an open source project called Appleseed that I've been working on. It's an open source version of Friendster or Myspace, but the intention is to make it distributed, so that people on different websites can still interact with each other, and a true social network can be created that isn't tied to any one website.

It's still in early beta, but it's shaping up to be very solid, with support for photo albums, and comments already partly in place.

More information, screenshots and source code is available at http://appleseed.sourceforge.net. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
