  3. Tools to combat Spam

Date: 10/06/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: web, spam

Hi there. I'm hoping to get an idea about what recommendations I can get for stopping spam. Here's my idea:

Does anyone remember Earthlink's "verify" tool? An email is sent to an earthlink.net address, and the sender gets a response saying something to the effect of "thank you for your email, however we must verify your identity, please click here to enter your name and a message to send to the user. If you are approved, your email will be sent."

My hope is that I can find something that I can install on my web server, which currently has SpamAssassin, that will allow me to do this or something similar. I've surfed through and seen some info about certain tools that also help *filter* spam, but I'm hoping to find a way to, I guess, automate the administration of a whitelist of sorts.

Any advice? I'll be x-posting this in various communities and on my personal site.

    Thanks :)

  10. Wireless network problem

Date: 10/07/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web, ebay

I'm having a bit of difficulty with the wireless network I set up recently. I bought a new Netgear router on eBay last week and was able to set it up to my iMac and cable modem successfully -- until today, my laptop was picking up the signal and I was able to connect to the wireless network. However, I had reason to disconnect the router today, just for a couple of hours, and when I hooked everything up again, it wouldn't work. I have been trying to fix it for a couple of hours. The laptop is picking up the signal, and says it is connected, but it won't let me view any webpages or connect to MSN, etc. An MSN error message mentioned something about DNS servers (?) perhaps not being defined. I can't surf the internet on my iMac while the router is connected, either. I can only use the 'net if I disconnect the router and connect the modem directly to the computer.

Also, the router was visibly brand new in the box, unused, however there were no instructions. When I set it up at first, I just plugged it in and I was automatically taken to the Netgear webpage where it set everything up for me. I don't know how to get back to this page, though, if that's what I need to do. I'm getting very frustrated! Any help would be much appreciated.

  12. Mac IE glitch

Date: 10/07/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web

First of all, I've gotten a lot of help here, and I really appreciate it. I have yet another problem. The website I set up for a client has a glitch on the menu here: http://www.armetta.com/portfolio/work1.html

I realize that IE is much less popular than Safari, but I would like to fix this. I also know that I have the page set up in a bit of an unusual way. I'm tempted to recode it using just tables instead of the lists. But if there is a simpler adjustment I can make to the existing code, I'd love to know.

    Thanks again!!!

  15. Cell Network Vulnerable to attack

Date: 10/07/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: html, web

Theoretically, America's cellular network is extremely vulnerable to attack. If somebody wanted to bring down the cell service completely, they wouldn't need anything more than an approximage 400MBps bandwidth; easily accomplished with exploited computers. Even taking out a city wouldn't require much more than 2 or 3MBps. Since this vulnerability has been discovered, do you people think somebody might actually try it? What do you think the reprecussions would be for the affected areas? Since exploiting the system is merely using the system (just beyond it's capabilities), what kind of punishment do you think would be given if somebody got caught? Generally, what is your thoughts?

Here is some info on the exploit.

  18. Routers

Date: 10/07/05 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: web, spam

    Hi,

I'm in singapore, I'm wondering whether anyone has recommendations..

I've already seen smoothwall and is currently evaluating the gpl version, but I may go for a more mission critical commerical version, but there are tons of features not available yet..

    I've seen devices at www.firebrick.co.uk, www.fat-pipe.com etc

the linksys routers (RV042 etc) seem to have snat, upnp , and bonding but not the web proxy... but a dual option may be cheaper ..

if you have one with a reseller in singapore without a massive price tag, let me know..

    features i'm looking for

    -must have-
SNAT (ie: multiple wan ip support).
    UPNP (eg: msn voice/video call)
web proxy with active directory user integration
    anything absolutely essential.. (ids?)

    --optionals--
mail proxy/antispam (keyword, autowhitelist, rbls, etc)
    packet compression
    adsl/dsl/t1 etc BONDING..
maybe vpn, but we're using remote desktop now.
    anything else good to have..

  19. A quick question, again.

Date: 10/07/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: web

I own an Ipod Shuffle, a graduation gift from my brother.

I hate the fact that you need to use Itunes to load songs into the Ipod.

I hate it even more that the Shuffle can't support "drag and drop"

Now, I have used Foobar2000 + foopod as my alternative interface, since it can give me a semblance of "drag and drop"

Are there any other (better) alternatives in the web? I came across numerous other "hacks" out there, but I need something a bit more... user friendly/near idiocy.

I know this is "RTFM" type question, but I'm curious on the thoughts of the community.

And no, I can't afford another mp3 player, since I'm pretty broke right now.

  20. A beginner question from this new member

Date: 10/07/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: html, security, web

    Assume:

    1. I am beginning to learn HTML and Flash, and I have a semi-photographic memory and a learning curve that approaches infinity over a matter of a dozen hours or so.
    2. I've never put up an actual website before--I've stuck pretty much to LiveJournal.
    3. I want to start a website (I've already registered the domain name) with the following features:
    • an embedded Livejournal
    • A few nice, classy, low-graphic-content text pages, some photos, and a ton of links
    • the ability to handle up to a few million page views and click-throughs per day, once it gets going (yes, I'm extremely humble)
    • scalable so I can add graphics and more advanced content as I go
    • zero popups.
Where should I be looking for a service to host a site with these features?  What's the price range I should expect (I need to start cheap now, but if it explodes I can pump in cash later)?  I place a premium on security and stability, and would love to support Open Source folks wherever I can.

I know some of this might sound contradictory--like I know what I'm talking about, and then I'm a complete newbie the next sentence.  I'm just getting started and would love to hear whatever anyone has to offer.

Case (yes, I'm big on literary references)
