Date: 11/01/05 (HTML Help)    Keywords: html, web, microsoft

Does anyone here use Textwrangler for making websites? Is there a way to download one for a PC (because I think this program is for Mac)? I am trying to finish an assignment at home, but I don't have Textwrangler. All I need are the tags which Textwrangler gives you when you create a new document. These tags are html beginning and end tags, head tags, as well as meta and something else, I think. I need these tags for my website to be validated by http://validator.w3.org

Whenever I try to use Notepad or Microsoft Frontpage to make a website, it never validates. There is always something wrong with the meta tags or encoding tags--things like that.

  3. Running out of options

Date: 11/01/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, database, java, web, apache

Hey, I may not have said this, or I don't say it enough, but I wanted to thank everyone in this community for their continued support and efforts. I would be the first to admit that when I find myself with any questions or in need of an honest (most of the time) professional opinion, this is where I tend to stop first.

I work for a higher education provider who has recently put a new state wide internet campaign together. This meant that all regions throughout the state came together and had to adhere to a standard format for all web publications. To me, this was a great move, however, we are still very limited to the type of tools we can utilize for creating web documents. For example, right now we are needing to publish our college bookstore book list online. The bookstore is currently using a very large and extensive Access database to handle all bookstore events. Each semester, or when a new book is added/deleted/edited to the book list, we publish an excel version of this book list and push that to our website, as is. We are now finding that this method is difficult to track, manage and keep current. It's a waste of time, really.

Here's what they are asking me, if we are able to update the database and have it also update the web at the same time?

Well my answer was yes, then no, and here's why.

Our network group has restricted all scripting except for Javascript and CGI/Perl. I'm pretty sure we are running Apache on a Unix box, with nothing like PHP installed. I really don't think Javascript could be used for this, however, I don't know it enough to really make anything happen. The same goes for me when it comes to CGI/Perl.

I do, however, know that I could accomplish this utilizing the Access database and PHP. Somethings I do know. But since I don't have the tools available to me that I know best, what other options could I use? Any suggestions?

To those who had been following '[info]'sunbird_news, the blogging is now in a new blog at MozillaZine under the title Calendar Weblog, available at '[info]'mozine_cal_blog.

While at MozillaZine getting the new URL, I looked over the other blogs to find a good one to add as a feed.  It ultimately came down to Blogzilla, a blog of tips and news for the Mozilla line.  I entered the URL on the syndication page, and found it already had readers.  So I'm just getting the word out there about '[info]'blogzilla_feed.

    Happy Wednesday!

  7. PHP AIM knockoff

Date: 11/02/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, web

    Hi,
I would like to add a chat program to my company's website. I would like a user to be able to click a button and then a chat window pops up on my bosses/customer service's computer and the user's computer. They can then converse about sales and so on. Each user should have a unique window, not like a chat room full of people.

Can anyone recommend a free PHP program to handle this or a licensed program. Thanks in advance.

  9. For the record, I'm not a designer. :)

    Date: 11/03/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

I'm working on a website to showcase the findings for one of my final grad school projects. I'm open to any and all criticisms so I can try to make this look better / more appealing. Is the font choice for the navigation/title too much of an eyesore? Would you want to sit and look at this thing for a while?

Don't mind the pages 1-20 thing on the bottom of the screen. That's going to disappear.

Please look. You don't have to go easy on me.. I'd really appreciate the feedback! Since I'm not a designer my feelings won't be hurt. :)

I'm leaning more towards this one:

This was my initial design. Do the colors work better? I'm mainly concerned with the colors in this one as I know the nav looks horrible in this one. :)

  10. Resolutions, and not the new year type.

Date: 11/04/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, java, web

    Hey all,

Got a question which to some of you knowledgeable peeps out there might seem silly and foolish, then again it may not.

As there are always the punters out there who continue to set their computers to lower resolutions than those considered "acceptable", is there a script (be it HTML, Java etc) which detects the resolution of the viewers PC and "suggests" or auto-loads the most specific one from a collection of differently rendered web pages?

Thanks and apologies if this is a silly question.

    Cheers

Alright, I've been doing freelance Graphic Design for about 4 years now. All the websites I've made have been for friends, so when I finish them I give them the files on a disc and they then upload them themselves. My question is, if I do a site for a client how would "give it to them" ?

  12. Domain Transferring. . .

    Date: 11/04/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

Could anyone explain to me how I would go about transferring my domain name from GoDaddy to Dreamhost? Domain registration confuses the hell out of me, and unsurprisingly, I couldn't find anything on GoDaddy that tells me how to transfer out of their service and into someone else's. And would the process be the same for my other domain registered at iPowerWeb?

    Thanks for the help.

  13. Need a really good form validator script

Date: 11/04/05 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: php, java, web

    Hi guys,

I've spent the last two days sourcing the web for a javascript form validator. I'm pretty decent with php, which is why I've avoided using js for so long (I just did all my validation server-side), but I find myself in need now.

As you might guess, I've found heaps and heaps of js form validators, but none of them are quite right. In a nutshell, I'm looking for a single function that I can use <form ... onSubmit="return validate(this);"> to validate ANY form across my site. I want to check

    • presence of any data (for required fields)

    • valid date format (dd/mm/yyyy OR mm/yyyy)

    • check that an "EndDate" field is greater than a "StartDate" field

    • valid time format (h:mm or hh:mm or HH:MM)

    • valid currency format ($DD or $DD.cc)

    • valid number format (no alpha characters)

    • valid state (QLD OR NSW OR ACT OR VIC OR TAS OR NT OR SA OR WA)

    • valid 4-digit post code (exactly four numbers)

    • valid email address format
